RNC: On Second Thought, We Need At Least One More Debate

I'm so old I remember when the RNC thought too many debates was part of the problem. Now it seems not enough debates are. So mark January 14th on your calendars for another debate on Fox Business.

This is an interesting development to say the least. Earlier this year the RNC had a very different feeling about the number of debates.

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said in an interview Thursday that he regarded the 2012 debates as “an embarrassment and ridiculous” for the party.
“It was like a dog-and-pony show,” he said. “I think debates are important, but just because you’re a good debater doesn’t mean you’re going to be a good president. It’s just too much of an importance on debating.”

“I’m trying to limit the opportunity we have to kill each other,” he said. “I’ve always tried to be a person that sells what I control. I don’t like to sell things I don’t control. I don’t control people’s mouths, that’s for sure, but what I do control is the length of time we have to kill each other.”

Huh.

Whatever could have changed the Chairman's mind?

Ohhhhhh right.

If you look at the Real Clear Politics national and early state polling averages and compare them to the dates of the four debates so far, you'll see there's some correlation between debates and the movement in polling. After benefiting greatly from first debate Trump has taken a hit after the last two (before rebounding) so this may not make much difference to him. What you really see is Marco Rubio tends to benefit from these events.

I wonder if the GOP has any interest in continuing that trend. Some seem to think so.

Another top campaign staffer, speaking on the condition of anonymity, accused the RNC of pandering to the establishment.
"My opinion is that this is panic in reaction to the unintended consequences of their decision to try and narrow the debates to begin with," he said.
"When they reduced the number of debates at the time, the thought was there would be an establishment leader. But now that the election's been turned on its head, with [Donald] Trump and [Ted] Cruz leading, now the establishment is panicking," he added.

Have you noticed the really odd thing about these debates is that Rubio hasn't been asked about his support for amnesty. Of course now that he's developed a plan for answering this topic, pretend he and Ted Cruz are two peas in a pod when it comes to amnesty, I'm sure he'll get a nice softball about it.

This is a risky move by the RNC. They are essentially now betting that it's better to try and take Trump down than worry he'll feel he's been treated unfairly and run as an independent.

The other gamble is that Rubio does much better than Cruz. Cruz certainly has benefited from the debates as well so he might manage to keep pace with any gains Rubio makes. And what if the next few debates devolve into a nasty Cruz-Rubio battle that Trump is able to stay out of and potentially benefit from ("look at these two politicians fighting over scraps. I'm focused on doing what I do...winning and winning for you!")?

So far the RNC's efforts to fight the last war by shortening the primary season and limiting debates (until they expanded them) have led to Trump. I'm not sure why they or anyone should think they suddenly have the right answer (from their perspective). But the fact that they are changing the rules in the middle of the game is telling.

They are scared and not just of Trump.

Added thought: They have announced the criteria for making the cut for this debate. Want to bet it's the most stringent yet? They will do whatever they have to make sure Rubio gets the maximum amount of time.

His 1000 in 10 years rules out a 9/11 type attack - by his formulation, if a 9/11 event is likely in the next ten years, then we need to do something different.

If, instead, we get a handful of people killed here, and a double handful there - which is where we are now, that is, to him, an acceptable level of violence.

This is at least different than our current political class that says "you are racist if you think that anyone would get killed."

I think that might be the reason.

GOPe could accept a Trump presidency less than a Dim whipping, but they would swallow it.
However the biggest funders are starting to say they won't give money if Trump is the candidate and that must have them scared green that money won't go to their pockets.
I am suspicious of anyone who only does fundraising. After a while only the money is important, and policies are only things that facilitate or block fundraising.

If Rubio campaigns on amnesty and wins, it will likely pass. If he does not campaign on it and wins, it will likely not pass. If he does pass it, he will likely be a one-termer. But it is an open possibility that if he were to win and then win again, that it would be on his 2nd term agenda.

I certainly understand why some people will never forgive Rubio on it. For me, I could look past it for now, but it will depend on what else he says about it.

Host picks one, maybe two and flips a coin and winner gets 10 minutes to introduce, loser gets 10 minutes to rebut, repeat for follow up, and then closing statements.
Repeat next week with new candidates.

The odds are high that in a public government union office like that, if one person gets a baby shower all expectant mother/father employees get a baby shower. It is probably an all or none rule. So they had to give him one (I hope they gave cheap shitty stuff) so that other employees could have them. Probably fell on the office recreation committee or something who didn't have a choice.

530 That is the whole point. To make people who like to spout the good feelies put a number (cost/benefit) on death and misery to get their endorphin fix. How many dead or maimed men and women with children just showing up for work to make a living are worth your self satisfied back patting. Wouldn't an anti-depressant be more cost-effective and maybe others people's lives would not have to be forfeit so "that's not who we are" can be spouted by some defective git. are the rules (the written ones anyway). If Trump had the most but not a
majority, not sure why he should win then. But I don't really know
what the rules state. I would assume that if you have a majority of the
delegates you win, but if you don't then you have to someone get those
delegates.

I got into this with Vic about a week or so ago. The candidate who gets a majority of delegates gets the nomination. Period. If Art of the Deal can't wheel and deal his way into getting a majority of delegates if he comes into the convention with the lead, then he shouldn't be President anyway. (Indeed, one would think he or some of the Best Minds in the World who are working for him would be counting noses and doing the wheeling and dealing before the convention, so the convention is a coronation -- they have a pro forma first ballot at 3 in the morning where everyone votes for who they were committed to on the first ballot, then in the second ballot in prime time he's nominated.) What the Trump supporters implicitly want is to have special rules where their guy gets to be the nominee without a majority of delegates, based on polls, I guess. It's not clear to me how that would work.
