RNC: On Second Thought, We Need At Least One More Debate

I'm so old I remember when the RNC thought too many debates was part of the problem. Now it seems not enough debates are. So mark January 14th on your calendars for another debate on Fox Business.

This is an interesting development to say the least. Earlier this year the RNC had a very different feeling about the number of debates.

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said in an interview Thursday that he regarded the 2012 debates as “an embarrassment and ridiculous” for the party.

“It was like a dog-and-pony show,” he said. “I think debates are important, but just because you’re a good debater doesn’t mean you’re going to be a good president. It’s just too much of an importance on debating.”

...

“I’m trying to limit the opportunity we have to kill each other,” he said. “I’ve always tried to be a person that sells what I control. I don’t like to sell things I don’t control. I don’t control people’s mouths, that’s for sure, but what I do control is the length of time we have to kill each other.”

Huh.

Whatever could have changed the Chairman's mind?

Ohhhhhh right.

If you look at the Real Clear Politics national and early state polling averages and compare them to the dates of the four debates so far, you'll see there's some correlation between debates and the movement in polling. After benefiting greatly from first debate Trump has taken a hit after the last two (before rebounding) so this may not make much difference to him. What you really see is Marco Rubio tends to benefit from these events.

I wonder if the GOP has any interest in continuing that trend. Some seem to think so.

Another top campaign staffer, speaking on the condition of anonymity, accused the RNC of pandering to the establishment.

"My opinion is that this is panic in reaction to the unintended consequences of their decision to try and narrow the debates to begin with," he said.

"When they reduced the number of debates at the time, the thought was there would be an establishment leader. But now that the election's been turned on its head, with [Donald] Trump and [Ted] Cruz leading, now the establishment is panicking," he added.

Have you noticed the really odd thing about these debates is that Rubio hasn't been asked about his support for amnesty. Of course now that he's developed a plan for answering this topic, pretend he and Ted Cruz are two peas in a pod when it comes to amnesty, I'm sure he'll get a nice softball about it.

This is a risky move by the RNC. They are essentially now betting that it's better to try and take Trump down than worry he'll feel he's been treated unfairly and run as an independent.

The other gamble is that Rubio does much better than Cruz. Cruz certainly has benefited from the debates as well so he might manage to keep pace with any gains Rubio makes. And what if the next few debates devolve into a nasty Cruz-Rubio battle that Trump is able to stay out of and potentially benefit from ("look at these two politicians fighting over scraps. I'm focused on doing what I do...winning and winning for you!")?

So far the RNC's efforts to fight the last war by shortening the primary season and limiting debates (until they expanded them) have led to Trump. I'm not sure why they or anyone should think they suddenly have the right answer (from their perspective). But the fact that they are changing the rules in the middle of the game is telling.

They are scared and not just of Trump.

Added thought: They have announced the criteria for making the cut for this debate. Want to bet it's the most stringent yet? They will do whatever they have to make sure Rubio gets the maximum amount of time.

19 Agree with Pappy - Trump is steering the ship, and he could have a lot of fun with this. Live tweet the debate or something.

Interesting thought...Trump floated the third party run balloon the other day, and this extra debate is just more evidence that he isn't being treated fairly by the GOPe...so are we seeing something happen here?

Posted by: YesThatBlackOrchid at December 09, 2015 09:29 AM (Vz7fy)

21 So I'm guessing either they want an additional debate for after Trump has dropped out/gone 3rd party?

Or, they need one more debate in which they coordinate w/the moderators to take out Trump?

For some reason, I can't think of any *positive* reason the RNC would do this.

23 Good analysis, Drew. I've talked to way too many normally intelligent people who see Rubio in a debate and are won over because he is cute, cuddly, and glib. But ultimately I don't think he's a threat to Cruz or Trump. His record on amnesty really is terrible.

83 53 I'm starting to suspect (and yes, hope) that Trump is playing Bernie to Cruz's Hilary. That is to say, it has become increasingly obvious that the Bernie Sanders campaign's primary goal is getting Hilary Clinton the nomination, and I'm getting a feeling Trump and Cruz are playing a similar game.

Gun control is NOT a solution to terror in any way shape or form. Terror even with guns keeps happening in places with strict gun control laws. The public may be overly polite about our muslim neighbors and so on and so forth, but they aren't truly stupid. They realize gun control doesn't work in this, even if they don't want to admit it.

Well, yes. Adams is saying that there is an "acceptable level of violence" as the Brits used to say about the IRA.

Life does not exist without risk.

And at least Adams is noting that. The current non-Trump political class is saying, hey, let's keep doing what we are doing. In the face of Paris and San Bernardino, people see them saying "hey, let's keep doing what we are doing THAT DOESN'T WORK."

So Trump is offering an alternative. And as long as our political class offers "don't worry, it's okay" he is going to win the argument even at the risk of sounding like Hitler (or more accurately, FDR).

Our existing political class is why Trump exists as a candidate.

That, and - they're hoping that !Jeb or the Cuban Combover or one of the kneepad media will finally, finally do their dirty work for them and put the knife in Teh Donald's back.

And if it is the media, so much the better - nickelfuckers like Preibus can complain, "we tried so hard, but we just can't beat the media bias!" while fapping to the thought of all that sweet, sweet CoC money that will flow their way now that the irritating blowhard is gone.

Cruz wouldn't show for a separate Trump event. Bad optics: it would makeCruz look like a second fiddle.Cruz doesn't strike me as anyone's second fiddle.

Insofar as more debates being an Establishment conspiracy to hamstring Donald Trump: maybe, probably. Should be pointed out, though (for the nth time), that Donald Trump is emphatically not a conservative. For example, Trump came out for single-payer healthcare (or a variation thereof)in this election cycle, whichputs him on the same ideological plane as Bernie Sanders, at least on that issue.

Should also be pointed out that it isn't only the Establishment which detests Donald Trump. So do I, and I'm guessing lots of others who know an opportunistic, unprincipled,say-anything demagogue when they see one.

All they have is the same reason they've trotted out to vote R for the last 15 years--"But, but!! The Democrats are worse!!"

No, they're not. Not at this time.

They haven't advanced a single conservative policy at the federal level in over 10 years. Hell, they've gotten so fucking scared of actually saying anything conservative that a guy like Trump is able to out-conservative them--that's pathetic.

169 Adams is at least being honest and saying there is a risk, and he is saying what in his opinion the acceptable risk is. Basically, he is accepting the post 9/11 state of things. His 1000 in 10 years rules out a 9/11 type attack - by his formulation, if a 9/11 event is likely in the next ten years, then we need to do something different.

If, instead, we get a handful of people killed here, and a double handful there - which is where we are now, that is, to him, an acceptable level of violence.

This is at least different than our current political class that says "you are racist if you think that anyone would get killed."

GOPe could accept a Trump presidency less than a Dim whipping, but they would swallow it.
However the biggest funders are starting to say they won't give money if Trump is the candidate and that must have them scared green that money won't go to their pockets.
I am suspicious of anyone who only does fundraising. After a while only the money is important, and policies are only things that facilitate or block fundraising.

196 I'm still considering the implications of what Adams wrote. He's "offering" 1000 in 10 years, which comes to around 1 Paris attack a year. Ummm, no. But I do have to admit that doesn't even equal a Chicago or Detroit.

I guess, by offering that as a starting bid, it clarifies where you wind up, in bodies-on-the-floor terms. 1 SB a year would equal roughly 150 people in 10 years, for example.

The biggest unknowns, the ones you can't quantify so easily, are the effects of having such committed a-holes in the US to begin with. Do they recruit others? Do the ones who do not kill wind up voting in a bloc to extend inimical laws? What if they go "off-script" and set off a WMD? Do those umbers take into account the aiding and abetting they would do for foreign nationals, to include smuggling in WMDs and extending conflicts in other regions? How much of that would you put up with?

I am going to be boring and repeat myself.

death and losses is less important than admitting your philosophy and worldview is wrong.
The feeling is that death and destruction, loosing wars and losing buildings and planes and embassies are less important than finding out that your beliefs are false.

Remember the line, "I would rather go down in defeat than stoop to such tactics"? Yep. Don't say that to head-choppers and the Gestapo.

I'm guessing Bill Clinton's conversation with Trump the night before Trump announced consisted of Bill begging Trump not to run, a Slick Willie 'Don't throw us in the briar patch' kind of reverse psychology that would be just like Clinton, who--for all of his faults--can read peopleat a glance and--according to all who know him--has an uncanny feel for the political terrain. After all, look what the Ross Perot candidacy did for Bill Clinton in his run for the presidency. You'd better believe the Clintons would want that lightning to strike twice.

But yeah, sure, while I don't consider myself a 'nattering naysayer', if Trump wins the Presidency, I'll never post here again. I'd be the odd man out in Trump Fan Club Central, and who would want that?

290 A Trump third party candidacy may be the GOP's best hope now. Obviously, Trump is unelectable, and will only grow more so as time goes on and he continues to open his mouth. Trump as a third party candidate allows Republicans to distance themselves from Trump's inflammatory, toxic, thoughtless rhetoric, and having a reasonable GOP candidate gives "I don't like Hillary, but I fucking HATE Trump" voters (easily 50% of the nation) another option. It's a long shot -- I think Hillary pretty much has this in the bag now -- but at least there's a chance.

323 Here's an interesting post from Scott Adams regarding Trump's moratorium on muslim immigration:

http://blog.dilbert.com/post/134791529391/risk-

management-trump-persuasion-series

It's a pretty good analysis on what the real issue (for the most part is)-

and that is:

How many American deaths from muslim jihadist terrorism are you willing to accept -

to be able to admit muslims into this country?

Scott Adams places the number, for him, at 1000 American deaths every ten years.

He is quite honest about the fact that given the odds it is highly unlikely that one of the 1000 dead will be him.

So, he is willing to condemn to death 1000 other American people, so he can feel good about letting muslims into this country for frankly fuzzy reasons.

I keep hearing that a moratorium on muslim immigration is a "bad thing" but I have yet to hear a coherent reason as to why.

"Because religious freedom", doesnt really apply because they aren't American citizens.

So, what else do you have?

What is it that's so necessary to American society about muslim immigrants that we must risk American lives?

For me, my number of American deaths acceptable to allow me to pat myself on the back and be on the "right side of history" and admit potential muslim jihadist terrorists along with Obama is zero, zip, nada, the big goose egg.

So, for those of you who think we must admit muslims and are anti-moratorium,

belly on up to the bar and tell us how many other people, tell us how many deaths of your fellow citizens from muslim jihadist terrorism , that you are willing to accept to feel all nice and self-righteous and fuzzy?

An Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the Associated Press that a Trump-Netanyahu meeting was scheduled two weeks ago, before Trump's proposal to shut down Muslim immigration to the U.S. until the vetting process is investigated. -breitbart

Heads explode.

Republican presidential candidate Sen. Marco Rubio missed a Senate vote that advanced the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), a conference bill that is poised to replace the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law. The legislation was advanced in the Senate by a vote of 84-12. The GOP 2016 contenders who voted against advancing the bill are Sens. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY). -breitbart

There was a story yesterday that the GOP was considering "disqualifying" Trump from the race over his call for shutting down Muslim immigration. He responded with a poll that 68% of his voters would follow him to a third party. I think that's a low estimate. If the party did that, the entire base would revolt.

408 CBS was interesting this morning. They had the talking heads giving the usual line that Trump's idea is unconstitutional. And then they chatted around about how this means that all Republicans support this idea if he wins the nomination.

Then they had a focus group. And the focus group said, even if I disagree with him, this is something that needs to be said. We need to be able to talk about it. You had blacks, whites, all coming together to say that we need a discussion on whether we can continue to allow these folks into our country, if we don't have a way to screen out those that are a danger. The only person that truly disagreed seemed to be a Hillary supporter

It looks like most of the country is aware that we have targeted 80 year old grandmas for strip searches and let in young Muslim men without so much as a second glance in the name of political correctness.

Not a "blank slate." Trump says what he thinks, and doesn't mince words.

If what you want is an end to sloppy immigration "enforcement," no more illegals and sane defense/economic policies, Trump has talked about those things. He hasn't been ambiguous.

Yes, he has wet the beaks of some Democrat political hacks. Which is what anyone who wants to do business at his level does. To me, that's more understandable and excusable than sucking up to Choom Boy's policies as the other Republican wannabes do. Trump didn't support nukes for Iran, for example. Nor, IIRC, did he do anything to let TPP come to pass.

Trump is a blank slate for his detractors, who can accuse him of anything and find a happy home for their nutball pronouncements with people like the Witches of Salem. And, sometimes, at the HQ.

456 You are not kidding. Go on DUNG or KOS and they call folks like us
Teahadists, terrorists, etc. They say we are just as bad as ISIS.

THAT is what we are up against.

That's another thing I'm struggling to grok: how so many people all
of a sudden are choosing to live in a fantasy world full of lies.

Note all the crazy stuff a disturbingly large number of folk are
buying into: campus rape epidemics, white privilege, "hands up, don't
shoot," war on women, islam is the religion of peace, the list goes on.

What is it about lies that attracts so many people? I just don't get
it. How can they not plainly see what's right in front of them?
===============
I mentioned it yesterday, the blog post "Point Deer, Makes Horse."

"Zhao Gao was contemplating treason but was afraid the other officials
would not heed his commands, so he decided to test them first. He
brought a deer and presented it to the Emperor but called it a horse.
The Emperor laughed and said, "Is the chancellor perhaps mistaken,
calling a deer a horse?" Then the emperor questioned those around him.
Some remained silent, while some, hoping to ingratiate themselves with
Zhao Gao, said it was a horse, and others said it was a deer. Zhao Gao
secretly arranged for all those who said it was a deer to be brought
before the law and had them executed instantly."

That's what this is all about, why facts don't matter: All that matters to the left now is showing their loyalty to the group. And what better sign of loyalty than to repeat and say you believe obvious lies?

I admit that bothered me too. For a while. I really, really wanted a candidate who stood strong for the principles I believe in.

And then the "conservatives" at the GOPe gave me a bunch of opportunistic hacks. The pimped one because his daddy and brother had been presidents, so It Is His Turn. They added others who are tired, burned-out retreads who have never accomplished anything in their pathetic, public-teat-sucking lives. And then they added a dose of Identity Politics candidates whom no one can oppose 'cause they're Minorities!.

So, instead, I decided I'd go for the guy who has a job and is an unashamedly patriotic American.

So if someone personally benefits from aiding and abetting the most liberal Democrats, even to the point of showering them with campaign cash, it's totally okay. In fact, it's super awesome.

I guess when Mitch McConnell crafts some bill with Democrats that gives his home state some big government project, he also benefits from this treason, so it totally makes sense and is also super awesome. After all, he's acting in his own self-interest, what could possibly be wrong with selfishness like that!

But how is it a CEO like Carly Fiorina who ran a MUCH larger operation than Trump is able to NOT give Democrats a penny.

Oh, and Hillary being at Trump's wedding and Trumps daughter being besties with Chelsea Clinton, it's all about some real estate deal. Every businessman HAS to do these things.

It's not so much that they like lies as that the particular false narrative they've been taught has several points of appeal. Hence they desperately want it to be true. They'll cling to it no matter what, like someone with a terminal illness going to a Benny Hinn rally.

The narrative allows them to feel special. Compared with their first world peers that they grew up with, they were losers, outcasts. When they support jihadi filth and BLM, they get to feel special, like Jake Sully in Avatar. They can rationalize their hatred and envy of the milieu they grew up in. They get to feel morally superior, by feeling bad about things they never did, and berating their fellow citizens for things they never did. Imagine how humble Bill Ayers must think he is, admitting that his very own country is evil and stomping on the flag. What a virtuous man he must be. etc.

Coolio, he is a real estate developer in NYC. I'm not sure if you understand what that means, so I'll break it down for you. You cannot get a permit to re-tar a roof in NYC without bribing somebody. If you want to buy old buildings in NYC, fix them up, slap a gaudy "TRUMP!" sign on them, and turn them in to valuable real estate, you need to have a lot of "ins" with politicians.

He literally would not be able to do his job without donating money to politicians all over the place.

Everyone who does any kind of business in NYC does the same. Literally anyone. Think of any company you do business with that is in NYC, and you will find they donate to pols out the ass.

Arrogant assholes, each and every one, who'd do whatever they could to fvck over the company and their fellow employees. It didn't take much to realize their crappy attitudes would extend to larger things too, such as our whole country.

A couple of them flew from North Alabama to LA to protest the Shah of Iran. On a restaurant cook's pay.

Not nearly as bad, but what about the Christian woman, persecuted in Iran by muslims after the Islamic fundamentalists (assisted by Jimmy Carter) seized power, who escaped to the USA.

Killed by an admirer of ISIS (ignored by Barack Obama) here in the USA.

Last time I checked the gofundme set up on her accout was near $100, 000.

Smiling at you and discussing sports doesn't say much about whether they'd be ok with, say, restricting free speech or setting up sharia courts if they found themselves to be in the majority in a particular town. I'd still prefer we bring in Christians from other countries if we need to bring in immigrants. I don't get why people feel such a strong need to import the Muzz. I don't get the attraction.

>>>I'm on board with an overall immigration moratorium, but I don't really like the idea of saying "we'll keep allowing millions and millions of immigrants -- just not Muslims"
I don't know. I mean I get the argument for it. It just isn't my first choice of policy.
Posted by: Harry Paratestes

I think an overall moratorium would be great. But is anyone really arguing for one only for Muslims? It seems Dems/RINOs want to keep the policy exactly as is, and conservatives want immigration/border controls and deporting all illegals, regardless of whether or not they are Muzz.

The odds are high that in a public government union office like that, if one person gets a baby shower all expectant mother/father employees get a baby shower. It is probably an all or none rule. So they had to give him one (I hope they gave cheap shitty stuff) so that other employees could have them. Probably fell on the office recreation committee or something who didn't have a choice.

530 That is the whole point. To make people who like to spout the good feelies put a number (cost/benefit) on death and misery to get their endorphin fix. How many dead or maimed men and women with children just showing up for work to make a living are worth your self satisfied back patting. Wouldn't an anti-depressant be more cost-effective and maybe others people's lives would not have to be forfeit so "that's not who we are" can be spouted by some defective git. It is a great question for people serious enough to think about it honestly.

I'm not really expecting him to have the most delegates, but what
are the rules (the written ones anyway). If Trump had the most but not a
majority, not sure why he should win then. But I don't really know
what the rules state. I would assume that if you have a majority of the
delegates you win, but if you don't then you have to someone get those
delegates.

Posted by: SH at December 09, 2015 11:23 AM (gmeXX)

***********************
I got into this with Vic about a week or so ago. The candidate who gets a majority of delegates gets the nomination. Period. If Art of the Deal can't wheel and deal his way into getting a majority of delegates if he comes into the convention with the lead, then he shouldn't be President anyway. (Indeed, one would think he or some of the Best Minds in the World who are working for him would be counting noses and doing the wheeling and dealing before the convention, so the convention is a coronation -- they have a pro forma first ballot at 3 in the morning where everyone votes for who they were committed to on the first ballot, then in the second ballot in prime time he's nominated.) What the Trump supporters implicitly want is to have special rules where their guy gets to be the nominee without a majority of delegates, based on polls, I guess. It's not clear to me how that would work.

Trump or Cruz have nothing to be afraid of from another debate. Trump won't be boycotting it, either. These constant paranoia plays are tiresome.
