If It's a Holiday, It Must Be Time for Flood of Articles from Leftwing Blogs on How to "Survive" a Routine Visit to One's Family

Well, I keep answering the question, but Ed Driscoll rounds up the latest weirdness from your Totally Not Weird and Psychologically Damaged Progressive Friends.

I have to steal this tweet from him:

By the way, the "How to Survive Thanksgiving With Your Awful, Terrible Family That Caused You to Self-Harm When You Were 14" type article has leapt from its usual perch at hardcore leftwing blogs -- the HuffPo, Salon, Vox, Slate, etc. -- to the allegedly "mainstream" media, at the Washington Post.

The Post's article is not that bad -- it is mostly about conflict mediation and perspective, rather than, as most leftwing blogs would have it, "How to DESTROY your Rush Limbaugh-Loving Uncle at Thanksgiving."

Still, it's interesting, if inevitable, that the "mainstream" media shows once again from whom it takes its cues.

As the "mainstream" media can't resist this trend, neither can I; I'm preparing my own How to Survive Thanksgiving article. Should have it up later today.

27 I disagree with a lot of the punditry who say that the holidays are not the time for this. Wrong. If a progressive relative is going to bring this up at the holiday mean, why should I not indulge. As someone moderately important once said, push back twice as hard. Holidays are a perfect time to expose the shallow thinking of our relatives. Markers need to be placed. Besides if you are confident that you have the winning side of the argument, why shouldn't you have some fun at the holidays, particularly at your weak-minded relatives' expense.

57 The last time I spent Thanksgiving with my whacko liberal relatives, I was informed by my darling niece that I was a homophobe because I didn't think that gay marriage was anything other than an oxymoron, even though she brought up the topic and it had no bearing on anything other than establishing how very open minded (and idiotic) she is. Then my cousin told me that she didn't want to live in a country where there wasn't clear separation between church and state, so I challenged her to find one. She was positively shocked to be called on it. Then I had to inform her basterbaby children that the turkey was really a vegetarian, so it would be okay for them to eat it. She was not amused.

Generally, it is the libs who stir the shit, and then don't understand why it gets flung back in their faces. I am perfectly content to ignore politics all together, but they never are.

Give it a rest already. Why do they feel the need to display their idiocy so publicly?

98 My liberal relatives are either dead, we don't talk (not because we had any roaring fights but just because we drifted out of each other's lives) or we don't see them at TG. Actually, I would be glad to have a mother who was alive and well even if if was liberal and a sister who wasn't thousands of miles abroad. I don't engage my sister too much in politics because she can't really comment very much. She's been out of the country too long to know what's going on here, and anyway-I love her.

I could be not remembering very well, but I don't recall talking about politics all that much at holidays even if we all agreed.

(The only politics at our table is how to get Uncle to calm down about how evil Obama is and how great that thing Rush said was. Like, just calm enough for the Secret Service to not knock on the door).

Anyway, you take some big portabella mushroom caps. Cook some spinach; add pinenuts, garlic, mozzarella, ricotta, sundried tomato, and garlic. Put the stuff in the mushroom caps (after you've bathed them in olive oil). Bake the shit out of it.

Result: one happy vegetarian cousin whom the whole family can mock.

197 Generally, it is the libs who stir the shit, and then don't understand why it gets flung back in their faces. I am perfectly content to ignore politics all together, but they never are.

Give it a rest already. Why do they feel the need to display their idiocy so publicly?

^^^^^

Lord, yes.

At the in-laws, hubby and I are the conservatives. Rest of them are mushy middle LIVs with the exception of the youngest BIL and his mentally unstable Scot wife. Flaming libtards, heavy emphasis on the tard. But simultaneously incredibly ignorant about just about everything, and yet they insist on sharing their opinions. It's made worse because they know we're conservatives and Christians, both things they hate and, both if them being absolute failures at life and it's everyone else's fault because they're special snowflakes that deserve the sun, moon, and stars, they will make passive-aggressive little sniping comments about things pertaining to politics or religion to try and bait us. When it doesn't work, one will openly start trying to talk to everyone about politics (ie, they talk and we all roll our eyes) in order to start and argument. The point of the attempted argument, I think, is to give them something else to claim they're so mistreated and misunderstood over.

Whatever.

The plus is that, being libtards, they're also inconsiderate assholes so 99% of the time they show hours late, so actual time in contact is limited.

Thanking God that hubby agreed to go to see my folks this year. It will be nice to be around reasonable people without worrying about accidentally initiating familial nuclear war.

267 I'm fortunate. Thanksgiving is to be myself, pater familias, eldest brother and his daughter (and perhaps his lady love). And a corgi and possibly other assorted canines, depending. Niece has lib tendencies, but she's 27 and shows signs of learning and maturing. Besides, she behaves.

We get to concentrate on good family time, great food, and the occasional decent football game.

268 Forgive me if this was already brought up, but I can't figure out what is up with some commentators and this Trump story of people celebrating in New Jersey.

Short version: Trump claims that "thousands" of Arabs/Muslims were celebrating in NJ as the Twin Towers came down. It increasingly seems that two things are true;
-First, that there were almost certainly not that many people celebrating in NJ,
-Second, that there really were people celebrating. Contemporary articles cite police 'detaining and questioning' people in NJ that had been reported to be partying, and there were indeed thousands of Palestinians holding parties in the Middle East.

Some people are going hammer and tongs at Trump because he has conflated the throngs of partiers in the ME with the reports from NJ. Jim Geraghty, who I normally find pretty enjoyable to read, spends many paragraphss at http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/427556/why-facts-american-muslims-and-911-matter-jim-geraghty going after Trump.

I just can't figure out why THIS, of all the things going on, deserves such focus.

270 200 I've always thought it was strange that the ultra-leftist (gay especially) family members spend the entire year disrespecting the family, doing things "their own way," blah, blah, but yet they seem to always be the ones most insistent on having holidays with all of the traditional trappings like a Norman Rockwell painting. It's like they're missing something where their soul should be.
Posted by: Naes at November 24, 2015 03:52 PM (Ypc8j)

They are trying like crazy to fill that hole that was left when they yanked out the love and grace of Our Lord, and then pissed on everyone around them to show what great atheists they are.

Pretty simple. When you reject Love, who is the source and summit of all love, then you become that bitter, brittle husk that cannot give or receive, but only lash out.

And here I am, left to pray for their deranged souls. A losing battle, but one I cannot forego.

Maybe they have to change the name because they're not giving thanks? Think about it. It's a holiday about feeling gratitude for this country, for family and for the good things in your life. (And who exactly where those Christian Pilgrims thanking for their bounty? )

Leftism is about being an envious ingrate. They don't give thanks because they're dissatisfied with what they have. Those college crybullies don't thank the Lord that they are among the most privileged people on earth - no they whine about everything.

So I can see why the name "Thanksgiving" could make a Leftist feel "unsafe."

276 Thanksgiving has gotten a bad rap about in family fighting for decades.

They made these same jokes back in the '60's.

I never understood them as we managed to keep any friction amongst the relatives smothered in food and fun.

The worst it got was arguments over the after dinner pinochle game (double) and football.

Me, I always dreaded Thanksgiving because I had/have soft teeth and my family shot it's Thanksgiving fare. No buying some fat frozen wrecking ball down at the grocers. That meant watching out for the lead shot that got missed by gramma when she dressed the birds. *crunch* OW!

I didn't know for years that other people BOUGHT their ducks and geese and turkeys at the store!!11!!11!!1

You know the rules.

Oh! I meant to tell the leftovers story. So. Whenever the 'rents host Thanksgiving, Mommy has my brother bring along a few poor forlorn souls. She then sends them home with a shit ton of leftovers. Mommy is a fantastic cook and people began jockeying for position to be invited.

Anyway, one year Mommy and I planned ahead and got out all the containers to pack up for people and as soon as the meal was over we divided everything up and packed everything up in nice bags and we were so proud of ourselves.

We were so proud until a couple of hours later when my dad went to the fridge to make a turkey sammich and was all "Where is everything?"

Yeah. Yeah, we didn't save any leftovers for us. Oh the wailing. Oh the gnashing of teeth. Oh the sucking suckage of suck.

326 I guess I never got the whole "How to survive your family at Thanksgiving" thing. Maybe after my grandmother dies it will be different but she will not suffer any fools at holiday get togethers and although politics can be discussed it is frowned upon. There's been more than one occasion when family has excused themselves to another table (myself included) when I'm not really interested in some politcal discussion that may start up. Political discussions are usually reserved for the room away from the rest of the family when dessert and coffee are served.

We have pretty much the entire spectrum of political views at the table, but I guess since we barely get a chance to spend real quality time together anymore nobody really bothers with political battles.

I hope as my kids get older we will have the same civility around the holidays. Family no matter how screwed up is worth a hell of a lot more than the media and politicians that help whip up the political fights.

Unnoticeable? I dunno.

I'm hoping they're there.

16 years now. Another 4 years and I will have stopped as long as the last length of time I smoked.

(I stopped once for 2 years after smoking for 17 years and then started back up 36 years ago.)

You will always be a smoker (at least for another 10 years), so don't ever think you can have just one.

I tend to steer clear of refurbed machines.

But that's one of the most popular lines of business-grade desktops out there.

The only issue you run in to is reliability. Look at it this way: a business-class machine is designed to be run 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 4-5 years.

That machine is probably at the end of that life cycle (time wise), and depending on where it came from could have been on 24x7 for 5 years.

Also depends on what software comes with it. Will whoever refurbed it give you an OEM OS? (Windows 7, 8 or 10?)

But... yeah, rolling the dice.

Great line of machines new.... For $200 and change, youre not out a ton of money if youre wrong... specs look good...

We always do a whole tenderloin along with the turkey, just to have something different for the non-turkey lovers.

Pro Tip - The tenderloins you can buy at Sam's Club or Costco are really good. It takes about a half an hour to properly trim it, then use big griddle to sear on all sides. Use lots of salt & pepper when prepping for the sear.

When cooking, set the oven at 250 and use a digital internal thermometer to 124 degrees. Pull out and wrap in aluminum foil and rest for at least 15 minutes. Perfect medium rare.
