Blue ringed octopus. Gun Safety This must be funnier in the original NeckRed. In the 50's, Idaho's Department of Fish and Game air dropped beavers to relocate them. I think someone's been Onioned. Costumes At some point, it's not the costume. The domestication of dogs may have originated in Central Asia. Interesting. I thought the ancestors of whippets/hounds were the original domesticated species. Posted by: weft cut-loop at October 23, 2015 10:50 PM (JmGFJ) 21

Believing that one's body does not reflect who they "really" are is not limited to those with gender dysphasia, but extends to those who feel like they are at heart disabled, despite being perfectly healthy. The dog in the leaves chasing a rock - we had a big male lab that would retrieve rocks out of the lake if they weren't too deep. He had one rock that must have weighed 10 pounds. He could barely pick it up in his jaws, and busted a tooth doing it.
He would bring it back to you and drop it on your feet so you could throw it in the water again. He taught himself to use his feet to pull the rock back toward shore where the water was shallow enough he could pick it up. He would work until he got it. We've talked about fraudulent govt. economic statistics before, and ZH just has an article up showing how the BLS misses inflation. I can't really believe it, if it's true.
The example they used was a "Soda Stream" syrup bottle. New version is diluted, for 29 servings per bottle, vs the old version, which was 50 servings per bottle. Same price. According to that, the BLS's CPI will register that 72% increase in price per serving as 0% inflation. If they're truly missing the shrinkage game, then they are indeed a bunch of frauds, even more than I thought. BLS does indeed equal Bureau of Lies and Statistics. Got a U-boat approaching the passenger ship carrying Sister Mary Claire, Sister Miriam, and their special charge. What will happen next? Speaking of U-boats. On this day in 1943, the commander of U-505 committed suicide while the boat was suffering a heavy depth charge attack. U-505 would later be captured by an American Hunter-Killer force under Dan Gallery's command. U-505 is presently on display in Chicago. Posted by: Anna Puma at October 23, 2015 10:57 PM (4aTyy) 40

Gambling on baseball earns a lifetime ban. End of story. It's been an effective deterrent. The more Pete Rose begs, lies, and changes his story (his current version is version #3 or #4) the less sympathetic I am. His worst enemy has always been Pete Rose.

I used to think Rose should be in the Hall, but over these past few years when he's been kind of pushing to be in the Hall I keep thinking yeah, he does seem like the kind of guy who would bet against his own team. Can't point to anything specific, just seems like a guy who wouldn't be above making a few bucks at his teams expense.

I got my shelving unit project all finished early this afternoon. Chained it to the loader bucket, and picked it up, which in itself is a pretty good torture test for the welds, since the racking forces on it would be substantial, and trundled it into the shop through the bay door. Had to put my shoulder to it and skid it the last couple of yards to its resting place. Already have one shelf loaded with stuff. Turns out one leg came up a quarter-inch short. Couple of masonite shims fixed that. Nice to get that done.

Thirty years ago, there wasn't an "internet" hardly worth mentioning. Certainly, not in comparison to what we have now.
Thirty years ago, the troll would be yammering inanities on an CB base station with an illegal linear amplifier, stompening his signal across three to five channels of the spectrum. Same mental defect, same sense of vast inadequacy being amplified by all electronic means, and self-demonstrably true in the very act of the deed. I've seen his ilk dragged into many a Federal Courtroom for violating the FCC rules. Without exception, every single one of them was once species of loser or another, and not a one of them bore the slightest resemblance to a Man or Moron of Teh Horde. Well, the FCC isn't chasing trolls. And we don't want the FCC all up in our bidness, either. But if Blackwater (nee, Xe) were to open a Troll Busters division, deployed in Bubba'd up old Cadillac Whambulances? We'd have some very interesting "projects" for their initial projects here, wouldn't we? Got the first rain here, today, since early July...probably about a quarter of an inch. The mosquitos are fierce tonight. I guess they must have been dehydrated (add rain to reanimate). Our big helping of the storm isn't due here until tomorrow night into Sunday as it moves east out of TX. The first four inches of rain will just fill the cracks in the clay. The rest may run off... Most people that get referred to as "Axis II" types are miserable to be around, but they usually don't cause too much violence. Obviously some do. Probably a very small percentage, and the vast majority, if they have a presence on the internet, get a perverse rush from the abuse they get. It's common. It's bland. It's boring. Well, well, I read that sources inside the GOPe say they don't have the votes to raise the debt ceiling. The accounting tricks run out Nov. 3, and Treasury delayed a 2-yr T-note auction on that day.
If you want to see a real "balanced budget" we'll get one if they don't raise it. You'll hear talk about "default" if we don't. Nope, that's their choice. They could keep rolling existing debt (but they'd have to be sure to pay the interest with tax revenue coming in). If you really are in the "Let it Burn" camp, you'll get it come then, if they let it slip. Me, I think it's just more Kabuki theater and they already have the deal done. Posted by: qdpsteve at October 24, 2015 12:11 AM (ntObR) No, I saw it. I dozed off for awhile, then woke up about the time the game restarted. Sounds like a good idea to me. There are still some albums I have on vinyl that I never got around to buying on CD. I bought the mono box set a couple of years ago, containing his first eight albums in the original mono mix. They sound terrific. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnJwBwGCll0 Then there are the "Bootleg Series" releases, featuring unreleased recordings, studio outtakes, and live performances. Buy them all. There isn't a weak moment among them. I've been buying box sets of specific periods, like the "Another Self Portrait" set covering the 1970 time frame, and the "Basement Tapes" from 1967. Now I'm looking forward to the "Cutting Edge" set featuring the studio recordings from 1965-66, which I should be getting in a couple of weeks. During a 14-month period from January 1965 to March 1966, he recorded three legendary albums in a row. Not just three great Dylan albums, but three albums that rank high on anybody's list of the greatest rock albums of all time. Nobody has ever matched that creative outburst since. "The Cutting Edge" is an apt title for this new set. Posted by: rickl at October 24, 2015 12:46 AM (sdi6R) 467

Oil Peon, gak you have to make a store run?
Posted by: willow at October 24, 2015 01:09 AM (jOumW) No store run. Still 2 cans of beer in the fridge, if it comes to that. But once this rum and coke is gone, I go to bed. Speaking of beer, and fridges, I scored a sweet find the other day. Hotel in town is doing a major renovation; gravel parking lot out back is full of old lumber, busted sheetrock, discarded furniture. Well, amongst all this crap was a cafeteria milk cooler. You know, the kind that holds two 5-gallon "bag in a box" containers with weighted handles to close the tubes off. I asked the gal tending bar if I could take it (it had been sitting out there for 2 weeks at least). She said it didn't matter to her. So I dragged it home, and plugged it in yesterday. Within half an hour, I could see a pattern of frost on the inside back where the cooling coils are, and it was right cold inside. Can you say "beer cooler"? I can. Couple of wire racks, and it will hold at least 4 dozen beer cans. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at October 24, 2015 01:16 AM (0yhH4) 539
I desperately want/need to go to bed. However, thanks to the ONT, I've missed the critical time period to beat my husband to bed, so I can fall asleep first. I can hear his snoring waaaay down the long hall to where I am sitting.
I took two 5 mg. melatonin earlier, and my only choice now is to crawl into bed and seethe myself to sleep. P.S. Husband sleeps with earplugs every night so he won't hear his own snores. I just realized that my '92 F-150 (that year range was some of the best trucks they ever made, IMO) is now older than that '55 Chevy (it's still around, not running, but his son keeps it in a barn and threatens to restore it). One thing I remember is that for at least one of them, the car would keep going/operating long after the ignition key was removed.
Posted by: qdpsteve at October 24, 2015 01:45 AM (ntObR) Chevy's used to have a "garage" position on their ignition locks. And the lock had a sort of flange around the key hole, so you could turn it without the key being there. Turn it to the "locked" position, and remove the key, and it could not be turned without the key. Simply turn it to "off" and remove the key, and the lock could be operated repeatedly without the key. I had a '64 Vauxhall Victor (made by GM in England) which had that feature. I went weeks on end without using the key. Because who would steal a Vauxhall? It was a tough little car, actually. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at October 24, 2015 01:51 AM (0yhH4) 609

Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at October 24, 2015 01:45 AM (McRlu) As I had noted in a previous thread, Workers' Comp doesn't run under the same rules as employee/1099. It's actually designed as a parallel healthcare/liability system so that employers can have workplaces and employees that are not wrapped in bubblewrap. At its heart is a massive tradeoff -- the w/c claimant agrees not to sue the w/c insurance holder for the liability of wildly unsafe workplaces -- and, in return, the claimant gets fast, easy, low-paperwork treatment. Seeing that the building owner's practice of hiding skylights nearly took out TWO very experienced roofers in one incident, you have the requisite wildly unsafe workplace. It is very possible that the building owners and their insurance agents would love to have you successfully on the w/c track. Be advised, however, that it is a tradeoff -- people in similar situations who decided to sue may have seen big paydays. But if you're just looking for an MRI and a potential quick patch-me-up surgery, it may be worth exploring. Posted by: cthulhu at October 24, 2015 02:09 AM (EzgxV) 645

I like that Adobe's made their stuff more affordable by going almost exclusively to the subscription model.
But... do I want to have to send them $40 a month for the rest of my life? A little bit scary to think about IMHO. It's probably a godsend if you're making major money doing that kind of work however. Posted by: qdpsteve at October 24, 2015 02:49 AM (ntObR) 671
Aldus PageMaker got bought by Adobe. They, then, decided to mass-market it -- which meant their tech support had to be reduced to "script-monkeys" instead of the hand-holding and problem-solving the users had become accustomed to....which meant that QuarkXpress and FrameMaker could come in and poach their customer base.
So, naturally, Adobe bought Frame. Posted by: cthulhu at October 24, 2015 02:45 AM (EzgxV) Anyone remember Harvard Graphics? Posted by: The DOS Hat at October 24, 2015 02:49 AM (vBeA5) 672

I can not and will not listen to Medved. Props to you for listening. My mothers grandparents came from Prussia. They would not let their children speak Prussian. They learned English. They assimilated. They were farmers and didn't get food assistance, heating assistance. How can you grant entery to people who are illiterate in their own tongue let alone English. Most of them don't want to assimilate. Record numbers of Americans are not employed and they want to flood the employment market with these type of immigrants. Eventually math will slap them up along side the head. By then it will be too late. Pandora box POOF Posted by: Misanthropic Humanitarian, Model Citizen at October 24, 2015 02:55 AM (MwNIp) 674

Thanks MH. Yeah I read about the US and the Israel/Iran nukes thing - details about what most assumed was the case. Didn't see the Cantor stuff. Though I can imagine. Yesterday I caught 5 min. of Medved (more than usual) and he is quadrupling down on his hilarious nonsense about illegals being *less* like tobe involved with criminal activity than citizens. I'm not kidding. There is something very weird aboutthe stupid, economically illiterate, factually challengedjihad of these GOPlimitless immigration freaks. It goes waybeyond the putative (but also not quite logical) CoC obsession with destroying national sovereignty (at least of the US). Posted by: rhomboid at October 24, 2015 02:46 AM (QDnY+) The modern welfare state is a Ponzi scheme designed around the "fact" that populations will continue to expand -- thus, you will always have more new suckers buying in than old suckers to pay off. Unfortunately, after the sexual revolution of the 1960's, every modern country saw a decline in birth-rates to the point where the old Ponzi couldn't work. A lot of this unrestricted immigration bullshit is an attempt to end-run the social security crisis -- either get enough immigrants paying FICA taxes to float the boat another couple of years, or get enough immigrants to outvote the old farts when they get cranky about having to eat cat food. Another funny story:
If anyone here has a copy of Yes' album from 1983, "90125", read the tiny print in the liner notes about how they created, edited and printed the then-cutting-edge graphic on the cover. They made it sound like a NASA mission. Today you could draw up the whole thing in 15 minutes in Illustrator, and print it on your desktop inkjet printer. I started using PageMaker back in the 90's. I always hated Quark. I know that some people swear by it, but I mostly sweared at it.
I resisted for a long time upgrading to InDesign, but when I finally did, I kicked myself for not doing it earlier. I still hate Quark, though. It seems like everything that's easy to do with InDesign is difficult and complicated to do with Quark. Posted by: rickl at October 24, 2015 03:00 AM (sdi6R) 680

MH, I don't listen to Medved, apart from snippets in the car, whenever. Unlistenable, in multiple ways. Arrogant tone without the intellect, wit, or other gravitas to back it up (think his background is movie reviewer, and his depth about matches that sort ofbackground). Has the stupidest callers in radio (that's saying something), mostly NPR-dumb libs, 90% of whose childish crap he stipulates while disputing the tertiary point (he's "conservative", you see). He also manages quite a bit of crude know-nothing anti-Muslim bigotry (yeah, that's fairly popular around here, but it's not radio), which is entirely superfluous if your (valid) point is to support Israel. Used to listen to Hewitt (meaning it's on in background while I'm doing paperwork, reading, digging a trench, reloading, pruning a tree), not much for a while now. Also unlistenable, too often. Good interviews with certain subjects. Posted by: rhomboid at October 24, 2015 03:07 AM (QDnY+) 687

Adjourn, you stupid dumbfucks -- adjourn!!! Pass all the acceptable funding to keep things rolling and LEAVE!!!! Make it so that vetoing your bill nukes the Federal government, and be elsewhere if/when it happens. And make it abundantly clear that the secret service is NOT "emergency personnel", and neither is the White House Staff or Air Force One.
Let the narcissist-in-chief light it off and try to blame it on you -- then wait him out for the six months it'll take for the country to realize that the Constitution makes the Federal government unnecessary 98% of the time. In case anyone's wondering why I'm having a ragestroke, they might take a look at the National Review's Corner article regarding Krauthammer's comment that Obama is "openly holding hostage" America's military funding.
Last I checked, Article I of the Constitution didn't have a President, and gave the bicameral legislature over to representatives of the People and the States -- with first dibs on what moneys should be spent to the people. Holding this fundamental principle hostage is a perversion and an abomination. Posted by: cthulhu at October 24, 2015 04:25 AM (EzgxV) 706

Can really only estimate since we have a 6 inch rain gauge, but I'd say 8 inches here in ETEX since Friday. Nothing like ETEX had in the spring (over 50 inches), or the flood S.C. had a couple weeks ago, but really appreciate some moisture. The burn ban is surely gone so we can safely light off our haloween turkeyworks. So, now I'm off to work in order to support those with ADHD and suchlike disabilities can stay home and smoke crack, and watch the weather channel and ellen.

There are some similar notes in Boston's third album, where Tom Scholz, supposedly an MIT engineering graduate, couldn't get MIDI stuff working to his satisfaction and went on about how complex the audio editing was. I recall listening to that album at a friend's house and thinking, "Really? This doesn't hold a candle to stuff Zappa was doing in the 70s." IIRC, those liner notes also supplied an address to write to for information on becoming a vegetarian. I couldn't help but believe there was a connection there. The thing I remember most about Ventura was that you got GEM, Digital Research's GUI for DOS (also the basis of the Atari ST UI) thrown in. Later, after GEM had died off, buying Ventura or a handful of big box apps was how you got Windows before 3.0 took it mainstream. The GUI wasn't a seller on its own and nearly any time you saw it on a PC you knew something else had to be on the hard drive that brought Windows along.
Then there was GEOS, which did amazing things on a 286 system but completely blew the market opportunity by having no development tools accessible to the class of developers most interested. You needed a SUN workstation to run the dev package and it was awful, never refined to the point of being usable by people who hadn't been involved in creating GEOS itself. A big part of the problem was that getting that level of performance out of a 286 required keeping abstraction to a minimum, at a time when abstraction was a critical part of making GUI app development mainstream.
