The nutria around here were brought by people raising them for fur. The bottom dropped out of the market, the farmers couldn't earn enough by skinning them, and a lot of them just walked down the rows of cages and popped the latches and let them run off.

My brother worked at a roadside zoo for awhile. He has this hilarious story about the first time he had to work in the rattlesnake pit and do the demonstration milking. (He picks the one old rattlesnake that's never had it done to them, with predictable results).

The nutria around here were brought by people
raising them for fur. The bottom dropped out of the market, the farmers
couldn't earn enough by skinning them, and a lot of them just walked
down the rows of cages and popped the latches and let them run off.

It was a weekly newspaper. I cut the ad out of a comic book and mailed it in. Got started that way. I sold it for a year...I was 12 at the time. A lot of Dads bought the paper from me solely because they too had sold it in their youth.

I think so. Real Masonite, aka "tempered hardboard" was very dense, and had a hard semi-shiny finish on the good side. Back side looked like it had been imprinted with fly screen. The stuff I used for shims was some kind of ersatz Masonite, kind of weak, but OK for that purpose.
I remember seeing rec rooms paneled in Masonite. It was not unattractive.

I know one of my son's buddy's killed himself at home on Father's Day in CA. The other buddy (who our son was most close to) killed himself a few days later.
My son refuses to talk about the suicides. At. All. He wears a black wrist band of the buddy he was closest to.
Heartbreaking. Their entire unite made it back from A-Stan with no deaths. And these kids are killing themselves at home. No words.

Got the first rain here, today, since early July...probably about a quarter of an inch.
The mosquitos are fierce tonight. I guess they must have been dehydrated (add rain to reanimate).
Our big helping of the storm isn't due here until tomorrow night into Sunday as it moves east out of TX.
The first four inches of rain will just fill the cracks in the clay. The rest may run off...

When I was 6 or 7, I was leaning into a footlocker/toybox to find a toy I wanted. Found it, leaned back and then WHAMMO. The lid dropped down as I was admiring said toy.

Sort of, I suppose. Most people that get referred to as "Axis II" types are miserable to be around, but they usually don't cause too much violence. Obviously some do. Probably a very small percentage, and the vast majority, if they have a presence on the internet, get a perverse rush from the abuse they get.

During a 14-month period from January 1965 to March 1966, he recorded three legendary albums in a row. Not just three great Dylan albums, but three albums that rank high on anybody's list of the greatest rock albums of all time. Nobody has ever matched that creative outburst since. "The Cutting Edge" is an apt title for this new set.

No store run. Still 2 cans of beer in the fridge, if it comes to that. But once this rum and coke is gone, I go to bed. Speaking of beer, and fridges, I scored a sweet find the other day. Hotel in town is doing a major renovation; gravel parking lot out back is full of old lumber, busted sheetrock, discarded furniture. Well, amongst all this crap was a cafeteria milk cooler. You know, the kind that holds two 5-gallon "bag in a box" containers with weighted handles to close the tubes off. I asked the gal tending bar if I could take it (it had been sitting out there for 2 weeks at least). She said it didn't matter to her. So I dragged it home, and plugged it in yesterday. Within half an hour, I could see a pattern of frost on the inside back where the cooling coils are, and it was right cold inside. Can you say "beer cooler"? I can. Couple of wire racks, and it will hold at least 4 dozen beer cans.

There was a time, long past, when car AM radios actually had decent audio quality, in that they could reproduce all that the AM stations could put out. Then they went solid state, and that pretty much killed the audio quality for 20 years or more.

I had a '51 Studebaker. And the radio in it was far older, mid 1930's probably, because it had the old fat-pin tubes in it; the ones that predated octal tubes. but that radio played, and sounded fine. The radio guts lived in a large box screwed to the firewall above the passenger's feet, and the control panel on the dash was linked to it by flexible cables.

I just realized that my '92 F-150 (that year range was some of the best trucks they ever made, IMO) is now older than that '55 Chevy (it's still around, not running, but his son keeps it in a barn and threatens to restore it). Chevy's used to have a "garage" position on their ignition locks. And the lock had a sort of flange around the key hole, so you could turn it without the key being there. Turn it to the "locked" position, and remove the key, and it could not be turned without the key. Simply turn it to "off" and remove the key, and the lock could be operated repeatedly without the key. I had a '64 Vauxhall Victor (made by GM in England) which had that feature. I went weeks on end without using the key. Because who would steal a Vauxhall? It was a tough little car, actually.

They were chrome plated, and pretty popular for a few years, until full-flow filters became standard equipment. But you can still buy new cartridges for the filters on '55 Champions. It has a wide application on industrial engines, too.

And, as far as I know, the TP oil filters worked fine, although I would be a little concerned about what might happen if water got in the oil. Some TP turns to mush when exposed to water for any length of time. Don't want that going through the bearings, no how.

As I had noted in a previous thread, Workers' Comp doesn't run under the same rules as employee/1099. It's actually designed as a parallel healthcare/liability system so that employers can have workplaces and employees that are not wrapped in bubblewrap. At its heart is a massive tradeoff -- the w/c claimant agrees not to sue the w/c insurance holder for the liability of wildly unsafe workplaces -- and, in return, the claimant gets fast, easy, low-paperwork treatment.
Seeing that the building owner's practice of hiding skylights nearly took out TWO very experienced roofers in one incident, you have the requisite wildly unsafe workplace. It is very possible that the building owners and their insurance agents would love to have you successfully on the w/c track.
Be advised, however, that it is a tradeoff -- people in similar situations who decided to sue may have seen big paydays. But if you're just looking for an MRI and a potential quick patch-me-up surgery, it may be worth exploring.

Also, if you draw on a sheet of paper q, d, p, in lower case, it actually looks a tiny bit like the ears and nose of a face; all you have to add is the two dots for eyes and a line for the mouth/smile.

For design work, I've found Photoshop Elements has a lot of good features, you just have to be willing to work around PE's quirks.
And MS Publisher isn't too bad. It does what it's supposed to for a classic desktop publishing program.

I've noticed on stations here in SoCal, when they play Adele's song "Rolling In The Deep," there's a line they (if you listen closely) have muffled. They think she's using the s-word.
But what she's actually singing is, "I'll lay your *ship* bare." Cracks me up that most of today's radio personnel are so young, they have no idea that turn of phrase exists. So they got complaints, and just assumed the people calling in were right, that Adele's singing "shit."

I do remember QuarkXPress, which IMHO was a far better desktop publishing program than PageMaker. My plan was to do typing, printing, document design, those kinds of things for local business, for instance designing a menu, a logo, et cetera. I was also willing to do copying, distributing, mail, courier and other kinds of work.
I also remember there was actually an upstart desktop publishing program called... PublishIt. Ooo boy. You can guess what its detractors called it.

And, of course, there was Ventura Publisher.
Aldus PageMaker got bought by Adobe. They, then, decided to mass-market it -- which meant their tech support had to be reduced to "script-monkeys" instead of the hand-holding and problem-solving the users had become accustomed to....which meant that QuarkXpress and FrameMaker could come in and poach their customer base.
So, naturally, Adobe bought Frame.

I've had that for a decade now. Have an old crystallographic program that creates images in either HPLG or PS files. HPLG I loved as it was a nice vector file, but I can't get it to be imported into any modern software. Illunstrator will at least turn PS files into usable image files.
I miss HPLG...

My mothers grandparents came from Prussia. They would not let their children speak Prussian. They learned English. They assimilated. They were farmers and didn't get food assistance, heating assistance.
How can you grant entery to people who are illiterate in their own tongue let alone English. Most of them don't want to assimilate. Record numbers of Americans are not employed and they want to flood the employment market with these type of immigrants.

The modern welfare state is a Ponzi scheme designed around the "fact" that populations will continue to expand -- thus, you will always have more new suckers buying in than old suckers to pay off. Unfortunately, after the sexual revolution of the 1960's, every modern country saw a decline in birth-rates to the point where the old Ponzi couldn't work.
A lot of this unrestricted immigration bullshit is an attempt to end-run the social security crisis -- either get enough immigrants paying FICA taxes to float the boat another couple of years, or get enough immigrants to outvote the old farts when they get cranky about having to eat cat food.

If anyone here has a copy of Yes' album from 1983, "90125", read the tiny print in the liner notes about how they created, edited and printed the then-cutting-edge graphic on the cover.
They made it sound like a NASA mission. Today you could draw up the whole thing in 15 minutes in Illustrator, and print it on your desktop inkjet printer.

I resisted for a long time upgrading to InDesign, but when I finally did, I kicked myself for not doing it earlier.
I still hate Quark, though. It seems like everything that's easy to do with InDesign is difficult and complicated to do with Quark.

GIMP is more affordable than Photoship (it's free), is less prone to malware, is supported under more operating systems -- and, if you want to change any part of its operation, you can download the source code, alter to your heart's delight, recompile, and run it.

MH, I don't listen to Medved, apart from snippets in the car, whenever. Unlistenable, in multiple ways. Arrogant tone without the intellect, wit, or other gravitas to back it up (think his background is movie reviewer, and his depth about matches that sort ofbackground).

There are some similar notes in Boston's third album, where Tom Scholz, supposedly an MIT engineering graduate, couldn't get MIDI stuff working to his satisfaction and went on about how complex the audio editing was. I recall listening to that album at a friend's house and thinking, "Really? This doesn't hold a candle to stuff Zappa was doing in the 70s."
IIRC, those liner notes also supplied an address to write to for information on becoming a vegetarian. I couldn't help but believe there was a connection there.

Then there was GEOS, which did amazing things on a 286 system but completely blew the market opportunity by having no development tools accessible to the class of developers most interested. You needed a SUN workstation to run the dev package and it was awful, never refined to the point of being usable by people who hadn't been involved in creating GEOS itself. A big part of the problem was that getting that level of performance out of a 286 required keeping abstraction to a minimum, at a time when abstraction was a critical part of making GUI app development mainstream.
