Rumblings: Turkey Has Shot Down a Russian Jet Violating Its Airspace

Turkey threatened this just a couple of days ago:

As Russian warplanes fly over Syria, neighboring NATO member Turkey says its fighter jets could open fire on them if they stray into Turkish airspace. The threat is serious and highlights the danger of a direct military confrontation between Russia and its old Cold War adversaries, including not just Turkey but the United States.

Tensions between Ankara and Moscow over Russia's stepped-up military involvement in the Syrian war escalated sharply on Monday when Turkey revealed two of its F-16 fighters intercepted a Russian jet that had crossed into Turkish airspace over the town of Yayladagi in the border province Hatay.

Now, bear in mind, Turkey is a NATO ally, and NATO has already declared it would defend Turkey in a conflict against Russia.

NATO has said it was prepared to send troops to Turkey to defend its ally after violations of Turkish airspace by Russian jets bombing Syria and Britain scolded Moscow for escalating a civil war that has already killed 250,000 people.

Officials at the U.S.-led alliance are still smarting from Russia’s weekend incursions into Turkey's airspace near northern Syria and NATO defense ministers are meeting in Brussels with the agenda likely to be dominated by the Syria crisis.

"NATO is ready and able to defend all allies, including Turkey against any threats," NATO’s Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters as he arrived for the meeting. ..

And now come rumors that Turkey (which Geraghty notes is very nationalistic, unlike the post-patriotic nation that is Obama's America) has shot down a Russian jet:

The problem isn't just that we're obviously not going to defend Turkey. The problem is that this sissy bitch allowed -- or even instructed -- this NATO commander to go out there and claim that there's a Red Line here, when of course there is not.

In fact, that was the whole reason Turkey chose to join NATO in the first place 70 years ago -- as a way to strengthen its position against is old rival Russia.

2 Russo-Turkish War (1676–81) Treaty of Bakhchisarai[3]
3 Russo-Turkish War (1686–1700) Russia gains possession of Azov
fortress of Taganrog
Pavlovsk and Mius[4]
4 Russo-Turkish War (1710–11) Ottoman victory[5]
5 Austro-Russian–Turkish War (1735–39) Treaty of Nis (1739)[6]
6 Russo-Turkish War (1768–74) Russian victory
7 Russo-Turkish War (1787–92) Russian victory
8 Russo-Turkish War (1806–12) Russian victory

NATO generals have shown more sense in the past.

Just going to quote one more time what General Sir Mike Jackson said back in the 1990s when Weaselly Clark ordered him to forcibly seize the airfield at Pristina, even though Russian airborne forces had already done that, infuriating Clark by making him look slow and tentative as a commander.

Jackson's on the record reply to Clark was, "Sorry, but I'm not going to start World War Three for you."

From Aug 17 2015 Defense News:

Turkey and United States said that Washington would withdraw its Patriot missile batteries from the country in October after bolstering Ankara's air defenses against threats from Syria's civil war.

The NATO mandate for the two-year mission will run out in October and will not be renewed, but the US is prepared to return Patriot assets and personnel to Turkey within one week if needed, a joint Turkish-US statement said.

They will be redeployed to the US for critical modernization upgrades that will ensure the US missile defense force remains capable of countering evolving global threats and protecting Allies and partners, including Turkey, the statement said.

So, looks like a preplanned move. Of course, you'd think someone would have revised that plan given the current sitrep.

224 Time to throw out the theory I've been pushing here for years. This is about control of middle east oil and gas and which route it will take.

There have been competing pipeline proposals that break down along Sunni/Shia lines for the most part for years. One route, was Qatar, Saudi, Iraq, Syria and then to Turkey. This is the Sunni pipeline. The other was Iran, Iraq, Syria and then by ship or through a proposed pipeline to Greece.

Russia is on team Shia. We used to be with the Sunnis. Seems more likely and less like a conspiracy theory everyday.

Depends upon which ground troops.

The Russian ground troops in Syria have extremely capable triple-digit SAM systems as an organic part of their units' tables of organization and equipment. They can do quite a lot to protect against aerial bombardment, aerial surveillance, aerial resupply, or anything else involving flying hardware.

Yes ma'am. I don't think it's a surprise that Putin is saving Assad in Syria and partnering with the Mullahs in Tehran. In WWII, Iran became a focal point for the Allies and Germany because of the need for oil. It's never really changed and countries continue to jockey for position. Iran has been positioning with Iran ever since the overthrow of the Shah.

And he sure as hell isn't operating out of a position of weakness with no strategy. A Russian doesn't take a dump without a plan as the saying goes.

Just a thought.

But OTOH, the "shia pipeline" (I like that term) has been a pipe dream for... I mean since the '90s at least.

Remember, the 9/11 truthers have been claiming that cheney wanted to invade Afghanistan so that he could give Enron and Halliburton pipeline through the hindu kush to emerging-nation-india as part of their larger pipeline plan for the middle east / central asia since, well, 9/11

Funny you should mention a Bear.

When the Russians probe into Alaskan airspace, they almost always do so via a brace of Tu-95 Bears. The Bear being a Soviet-era intercontinental strategic bomber, i.e., a nuclear weapon delivery platform.

One Tu-95 can lug enough cruise missile warheads far enough from home that if it got to optimal firing position, it could lay waste to every major population center on the U.S. west coast.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at October 09, 2015 06:52 PM (GERXL)

One thing that perplexes me about the Netherlands is that you need a government permit to move into an apartment or house in the cities.

Which means every apartment has a waiting list. When you move out or die, the next person on the list gets first dibs, no matter who they are. The landlord has pretty much no say in the matter. The next person on the list could be a gaunt, filthy heroin addict with track marks on his arms and swastikas tattooed on his face, and you can't even THINK about denying him the opportunity to strip all the copper plumbing out of your building, smear feces on the walls and have overdosing miscreants walking in and out of your apartment building.

446 The real question is should we defend Turkey if they get into a war with Russia? Turkey has become rather Islamist in the last decade. They are the ones who helped the Muslim Brotherhood out in Egypt. The ones who done the most to stand by and allow ISIS to develop. Most important of all they did everything they could to NOT help the US war effort in Iraq.

This has nothing to do with Obama's ineptitude, but we need to ask the question...should we side with a Turkey that is not the same Turkey that was a military secular ruled state when they joined NATO. If we side with Turkey we are helping Islam...make that clear.

What worries me is Obama will blunder us into a war with Russia not because he take resolute action one way or the other, but instead will dither about and talking big and bad, and put enough forces to get us into a war with Russia, but not enough to win it.

For me we need to kick Turkey out of NATO and let Finland join...but that is me.

Posted by: William Eaton at October 09, 2015 07:52 PM (q52Ma)

447 Obama won't defend Turkey. He won't even defend us. I'm convinced, were a terrorist nuke to go off in an American city, Obama/Hillary/Reid/Kerry etc. would flee the country with the nuke codes. They could set up an internationally pleasing mock government in Brussels or someplace and lecture all the raving hordes they left behind in the rubble.

448 "For me we need to kick Turkey out of NATO and let Finland join...but that is me."

Why would Finland join? NATO has no interest in defending them and they would become a target.

In reminds back in the 90's when the only 2 countries not to sign the anti-landmine treaty was Finland and the US (no worries, Obama took care of that). When a Swedish diplomant harngueed the Finnish one, he simply retorted, "for Sweden, Finland is the landmine." Everyone in the room understood the retort.

I have a personal fondness for Finland.

450 IMO Putin is trying to crack NATO. When Turkey asks its NATO allies for aid, those allies (led by the US) will diss it.

I'd expected that, eventually, Putin would crack NATO by going after one of the Baltic States. Perhaps Turkey will be the straw that breaks the NATO back.
