The Mask Falls: Left Calling for "Gun-Free Society"

They had previously lied about their goals, claiming to be in favor of "sensible gun safety measures" or other rot.

But now they're becoming more honest: a Washington Post editor just explicitly called for a "gun free society.

A Gun Free Society.

By Fred Hiatt
Washington Post Editor

Maybe it's time to start using the words that the NRA has turned into unmentionables.

Prohibition.

Mass buyback.

A gun-free society.

Let’s say that one again: A gun-free society.

Doesn’t it sound logical? Doesn’t it sound safe? Wouldn’t it make sense to learn from other developed nations, which believe that only the military and law enforcers, when necessary, should be armed -- and which as a result lose far, far fewer innocent people than die every year in the United States?

Yes, even saying these words makes the NRA happy. It fuels the slippery-slope argument the gun lobby uses to oppose even the most modest, common-sense reforms. You see? Background checks today, confiscation tomorrow.

And yes, I understand how difficult it would be. This is a matter of changing the culture and norms of an entire society. It would take time.

Note that he claims that using these words is dangerous, because the NRA would interpret them as a slippery slope argument to claim that the left wants a gun free society.

But that is precisely what Hiatt wants.

He's accusing the NRA of being right, but in an unhelpful way.

Ezra's Folly, I mean Vox, jumps on the idea and pushes it.

Harry Reid claimed to be pro-Second Amendment for his whole career -- but now that he's retiring, there's no more reason to maintain that fiction:

Hillary Clinton is announcing she'll start using extra-constitutional means to declare by executive fiat that the non-existent gun show loophole should no longer exist, and maybe that's what Obama has in mind when he promises more executive action on gun control:

The White House confirmed that President Obama was preparing a series of executive actions on gun control to match his recent passion on the issue after the latest mass shooting in Oregon.

"It's a high priority and will continue to be until we start to see more progress on this issue in this town," White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters today at the press briefing.

Earnest said he would "quibble" with anyone who criticized the president for not voicing any specific gun control proposals during his press conference, asserting that the White House was working behind the scenes for more executive actions on guns.

"I can tell you that they're not stumped, they’re continuing to review the law that’s on the books and continuing to consult with legal authorities but also others who may have ideas about what steps that can be taken to keep guns out of the hands of criminals," Earnest said.

Glenn Reynolds predicts the Democrats will pay a price for this, and further speculates that Obama is pushing gun control because his foreign and economic policies are in tatters.

Obama would just as soon we didn't talk about any of these debacles. The gun issue may not be a winner for him, but it's an ideologically divided issue where most Democrats will take his side, and it’s a hot-button issue that lets him inflame debate just by bringing it up.

These other stories, meanwhile, raise questions about Obama’s presidency that even Democrats are finding hard to ignore. Is it any wonder that Obama would rather talk about guns?

Maybe just more Stray Voltage. But maybe not.

33 Watch the back door.... this is slight of hand, and battle prep space, for the real attack.

That attack will come through TREATIES. It will have gun control buried in it... because we will have to be able to tell other countries where our guns are at...

And of course, the Surrender monkeys of the GOP have given fast track authority to anything Obama calls a Trade Agreement... even if it has Gun Control, or Environmental Law... impacts.

Note, we have no idea what is in the Trans Pacific Trade Pact ... it has been done in secret... but we DO know it has major impacts on things such as Patent Laws... which are EXPLICTLY controlled by Congress... not jus the Senate through a Ratification process.

The GOPe will give Obama what he wants, so they can later RUN AGAINST IT... just like they did with Obamacare.

Spoiler ridden example linked in my nic. A taste:

"The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead send the message to a society in the throes of endless war, openly nativist and racist politics, and mass gun psychosis that the only way to ensure the survival of you and your loved ones is to act with maximum brutality at all times. It's not that I'm saying these shows are turning people into killers; on the contrary, everyone involved knows damn well that this is decadent nonsense since virtually no one watching will ever be in the personal position to do anything like what Travis Manawa and Madison Clark are made to do. But the same is true of the NRA or Donald Trump or Ben Carson, who for political and financial profit fuel the paranoid, masturbatory murder fantasies of a country full of gunfucking shut-ins terrified of the unwashed, undead masses flowing over the border, out of the ghettoes, and into Main Street USA. Ideologically, Rick Grimes and George Zimmerman are just a zombie apart."

I can remember two mass murders early in my lifetime: Richard Speck in Chicago and the UT Tower shooter. IIRC, at UT students ran to their cars, returned with rifles, and held the shooter in the tower until the cops finally ran up the steps to kill him. A tough tactical approach.

Now, they cower at a statue of Jefferson Davis...oh yeah, that's progress.

Yep, I feel exactly the same way. I have maybe 25 decent years left -- not enough to make it worth living on my knees.

But here's the thing: They'll approach this incrementally. Suppose one of their first moves is a confiscatory tax on ammo -- a tax that, say, doubles the price.

Is that enough for anyone to take the path of the "constitutional remedy"? Probably not.

So then they'll double it again. And they'll declare anything more modern than a flintlock to be a class 3 device.

All we can do, realistically, is roll this shit back, with a vengeance, by electing the right people.

Teaching young men that they are responsible for defending their communities and that they have to do their part and can't freeload off the sacrifices of others would pay dividends IMHO.

against the world forces of this darkness,

Registration, licensed dealers, gun-free zones, all of them are doomed to failure and will require stricter measures until you inevitably reach confiscation. "Slippery slope" isn't an accusation of intentional deceit (though it's that for many gun control proponents) but the logical prediction of the sequence of events, each one determined by the conditions that caused the preceding one remaining unchanged.

Not that confiscation will work, either -- just look at how safe Mexico is.

187 Couple nights ago, I'd asked if it was wrong to be impressed with how the Italians dealt with Mussolini and his mistress, after his fascism had wrought such destruction in Italy.

Frankly, I don't care that the Communists killed him because he "betrayed" communism in favor of his home-brewed local version thereof.

I give it to 'em on style. From the lampposts, by the heels, well, it had a certain flair.

Our current house-brand(s) of fascists ought to take heed. We can't just let the Italians win on style, here!

All they have to do is cut off the power, food, and water that they send to the "Blue" states.

Day 1, send out 100 officers to get guns, 90 return.
Day 2, send out the 80 officers that show up to get guns, 70 return
Day 3, send out the 50 officers that show up to get guns, 40 return
Day 4, send out the 25 officers that show up to get guns, 15 return
Day 5, send out the 5 officers that show up to get guns, post an ad on Craigslist for more officers when none come back.

Start looking for and finding ways to avoid taxes, pay as little into the system as possible as long as you can, support nothing Federal.

Attack big business with boycotts, bad press and protests. Conservatives/Christians should be able to put a 10% dent or more in just about any company. Given how bad they want to grow earnings, that should get their attention.

And as far as Christians submitting to the rulers and authorities, you're gonna have to decide: am I going to submit, or am I going to resist the devil? Those are mutually exclusive items when relating to the Feds not, because the US government is now the most evil institution in this country.

Our greatest enemy isn't al-Qaeda, or ISIS, or Putin. It's the US government, starting with that sub-human mongrel currently occupying the White House.

Can I ask a super duper dumb question? Has any of the guns used in a single mass shooting ever originated at a gun show? I mean, if that "loophole" is the source of the guns, well, then, fine. But I suspect that gun shows have exactly zero correlation with mass shootings.

This is the classic leftist way of arguing - find something, anything really, and demand changes to something else that they want changed, despite there being zero cause and effect between the two.

314 I doubt they could rely solely on the po po. Even in NY there were departments who publicly stated they would not be enforcing the SAFE act. They'd have to get the military involved and it would tear the country apart.

The better route is to regulate it to death. Make buying a box of ammo an NFA issue. $200 tax stamp, six month wait, and God knows how much the actual ammo would cost in that situation.

Also - how exactly are we going to achieve this magical gun-free society? I mean, just wondering, but how are you legally and physically going to get guns away from people? Door to door? Buy backs? Legally it would seem the second amendment has themstumped. Physically - there are a LOT of people that would resist any imaginable confiscation scheme, perhaps violently. People would hide them. There would be a robust trade in illegal weapons. Hell, people can and would make their own guns. (look up the term "zip gun" sometime).
The desire is questionable, the legality dubious, but the physical ability to confiscate 300 million or so private firearms is ridiculous.
I'm sure Vox has some method, like hanging a giant electro magnet from a blimp, and just sweeping it over the land to collect guns.

328 Storytime!

When I was in fourth grade, our private school put up one of those dumb Gun-Free Zone signs in the front lawn. I think some law or regulation was passed making them do it because I can remember the entire school staff grousing about it. My best friend even made up a hilarious "We are a drug-free-gun-free school zoooone" song about it.

When I was in sixth grade, we had to check weather stations around the school for a meteorology unit every morning, and one morning my best friend found a handgun hidden in the bushes. Because he went hunting with his dad, he know this was not something to mess around with, so he herded his partner into the school, ran to the secretary's office and told her to call the police. He then ran back to the guard the door to make sure no little kids got near the bush (we were a K-8 school and it wasn't uncommon for little ones to use the door by the seventh grade classroom). The police came, took the gun, interviewed all of us, and that was it. We never heard why the gun was there or who dropped it, but this was in the days before school shootings, so we really thought nothing of it.

And where was the bush that he found the gun in? About 15-20 yards from the Gun-Free Zone sign.

This is one among many reasons that I severed ties with the NRA.

They gave Reid their imprimatur, and he proceeded to quietly work against gun rights, behind the scenes and via indirect methods. For decades.

Similarly: Kirsten Gillibrand. She posed as a supporter of gun rights and got NRA's endorsement, even though it was plain as a pikestaff that she would cynically dump the pose the instant she moved from her upstate House seat to a statewide Senate run.

Also, every damn time I buy one, a one-a-billion freak accident happens which destroys/loses the gun beyond any hope of finding. Boating accidents. Sometimes the earth just opens up and swallows 'em right then and there.

I tell what they will do. They know they can't confiscate anywhere near all the guns out there. Ammunition, however, is a consumable. That's where they'll put the squeeze on us. Make it illegal to buy ammunition, effectively (10,000% tax, etc, etc).

Rifles like very soft pure lead, smoothbores often do fine with a lead alloy, such as found in wheel-weights.

It's a similar tact to what they tried in New Jersey with 50 cal rifles after Newtown.

A 50 cal rifle has never been used in the commission of a crime in New Jersey or the rest of America for that matter but the Donks wanted to ban it just because they could but Chrisite vetoed it.

Which is one of the few things hes done a good job on, keeping the Donks from passing useless gun laws.

Sadly the next governor is going to be a Donk and they've been pent up for the last eight years so I have unrelenting and draconian gun laws to look forward to.

449 How many cops (and National Guard/military) do you suppose you could really trust.

They give out the confiscation order. Maybe not nationwide, just the most progressive states. Any cop who refuses will have to quit/be fired. They lose all their pension and benefits. And I think the leftists have succeeded in indoctrinating a many of the young punks. They don't liberty and independence like we do.

This has been their plan for years. With the current generation, we're seeing the fruits of their planning.

frantically texting my friend. As a result of a few minutes exposure,

Any alarm I buy will have to have that feature too.

I was in laundry room and could see a human's shadow under door pilfering through freezer. Wail, it was my dear husband, returning from a grocery shopping trip. I did not hear garage door open and when doorknob rattled I had a really big, almost full gallon of liquid detergent in one hand ready to hit the freezer thief in the head. I came very close to beaning husband whose immediate statement, post shock, was "This is why you do not have a handgun." pfft

I think they only people with any resistance left in 'em are mostly out in the country, and vastly outnumbered. Of course, the pussies all crowded in don't know too much about that country, and how to live in it, so we've got that.

Under the laws of nature he has the right to stand and fight, and if he is a man he would rather die fighting than to cringe like a coward, and that is what he did...." -- Clarence Darrow, closing arguments, People v Ossian Sweet.

Ossian Sweet was an African-American physician in Detroit who, in 1925, dared to buy a home in an all white neighborhood. Soon after, a mob appeared, determined to burn Sweet and his family out. Sweet and several others defended Sweet's home with their own firearms, killing one in the mob. They were charged with murder, defended by Clarence Darrow, and acquitted.

Restrictions on ammo storage and "hoarding", restrictions on lead ammo, restrictions on powder, requiring registration of firearms, restriction on storage, followed by licensing, followed by outlawing ARSENALS, limits on licenses allowed to be issued, squeal on your parent/neighbor days, open searches of houses if you ever bought a firearm on paper and might own a non-registered one, night-time raids on dangerous ARSENAL owners, daytime warrant searches while they know you are away...
And if they find something else that isn't right - say mis-labled pesticide products, or left over vicodin, you are going down for a DEQ penalty or a drug rap instead.

'Western societies are producing more and more Lost Boys, the fail-to-launch young men who carry dangerous social grudges.'

Most excellent article.

Teaser:
"This is not a novel observation, but it’s worth remembering the important role sex and masculine identity—or the lack of one—play in the life of dysfunctional young men. In many cases, these man-boys are confused about their sexuality and frustrated by their own social awkwardness, and seek to compensate for it. They turn into what German writer Hans Enzensberger called “the radicalized losers,” the unsuccessful males who channel their blunted male social impulses toward destruction."

Wright's explanation was similar. It's a Pharisee's stolen pride driving them, and sanctimony is the only thing that can drown out the shame of being liars that also deceive themselves. It's like crack cocaine, they, no matter how much of a fuckup or failure they are, can look down their noses at the most accomplished of people.

Their philosophy starts with an idea that there is no truth, and from there, it can embrace only error. If there is no truth, life is a roulette wheel, and anything that works repeatedly and consistently is cheating and must be punished. IE, Western Civilization. This is why they hate us and everything we stand for.

They are insane and evil.

629 There is no such thing as a gun-free society. There are only societies where law-abiding citizens are forbidden to own firearms.

Those societies fall into two broad categories:

dictatorships (North Korea, China, Cuba, Russia until very recently), where governments and security forces retain a monopoly on firearms so as to keep the masses under control.

social hellholes, where criminals (and police) are well armed and ordinary citizens are helpless. Most of these have gun homicide rates way higher than the US (Jamaica, Mexico, Venezuela). Venezuela banned private gun ownership in 2012. Since then its gun homicide rate has increased more than 15 per cent. So that really worked.

In any case, eliminating the US's 350 million privately owned firearms is impossible. But the anti-gun bleaters don't really want to do that. In their world, action is not the point--posturing and talk are enough.

Cut off bank accounts, and demand the guns be turned over.

Doesn't work? Get people fired because companies don't want to employee "terrorist nuts".

And just keep tightening the screw: Utilities, taking of off-house assets, &c.

Finally children's welfare agencies will get involved.

They can do this without firing a shot, and would mean that a family either has to give in, or become revolutionaries. Most people are not in the position where they could become full time revolutionaries and still keep their families feed, clothed, sheltered, and safe.

Yes, there are quite a few who will stand up. But I doubt that it'll all come down to police forces being whitled away by a few up-frond SWAT raids and political elites being picked off by assassination. Target a fe of the more outspoken gunners, make it look like they are X-tian militia monsters, and then get the MSM to convinve the public that the surrendering of their rights is necissary to protect them from these terrorist boogie-man. Throw in some urban thugs and things will get messy... and that protrayal will be determined by the gun-grabbing left.

The Cold Civil War has been going on for about 15 years now. It's only a matter of time until it turns hot.

That it will turn hot, I have no doubt. I've known that since 2008. When you have 52% of the population trying to forcibly ram Communism down the throats of the other 48%, it can only end in bloodshed.

You're imagine a possible scenario out of a virtually infinite number of positive scenarios. There were a (very) few prior to the Civil War--such as Sherman--who saw right away what the war would be like, how long it would last, how fierce and bloody it would be. People thought he was crazy.

I'm no prophet, so like Sherman I can only guess, but I'm guessing the Left will fold fairly quickly when confronted. I mean, look at their vision of the ideal man, The Modern Man. Does that Modern Man look like someone ready to do or die for his cause?

Every time the Left takes a forward step on their path to socialist Utopia, they do it on tiptoes and stop from time to time to pause and listen, hoping they don't wake the bear.

653 How many of Obama or Hillary's goons are willing to get shot taking my guns? None? How about Obama or Hillary themselves? No? That's why i sleep pretty well at night. My gun's still loaded and close, though.

654 Lets see them get all those easily confiscated illegal guns from the homies in Chicago and Baltimore first, where they are already illegal.

I suspect after they bury their dead and lick their wounds they might have second thoughts about coming after the legally owned guns from citizens waiting to see their patrols to give them an education in sniper and ambush training.

I will be proactive if they indeed do want to ignore the Bill of Rights, I do not want to live in a slave society and I'm at that age where I don't give a shit about dying.

655 481 This may sound awful, but I've identified a brother that, when the time comes, is on his own. He can stay in his suburban Detroit shithole and rot.

Same here. Went completely Daily Show on the NRA and is posting really stupid, long debunked crap on FB. I slaughtered him with fact, shut him up completely and I doubt I'll ever talk to him, face to face, ever again.

Doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Last few days I have been telling everyone who espouses the gun control line that if they want to do it, do it. Get your Senator/Rep to introduce an amendment to repeal the 2nd, and then get the states to ratify it. Their answers are always teh sadz stories.

656 Does anyone remember a link from some months ago about how the left was trying to stifle dissent and how it lead to the whole lot of them being "taken care of".

I used to have it bookmarked, but I had to do a reinstall a few months ago and lost all my links.

657 Yes! We need the government controlling guns. Look at the shining success Fast & Furious was!

658 Prezprissy seeks to make all gun owners criminals, negating the need for house to house confiscation. If he does, we will be notified, lose the right to vote, and face jail time if we do not comply...I'm just sayin'

659 They don't really want a gun free society, they want OUR guns. They fully intend that their enforcers would remain armed.

Besides if their side didn't keep their weapons, HTF do they think they could ever disarm us?

661 <i>"Harry Reid claimed to be pro-Second Amendment for his whole career --
but now that he's retiring, there's no more reason to maintain that
fiction"</i>

I can deal with the NRA being a single-issue organization, even when it galls me to see them support scum like Reid. Organizations that scatter their lobbying across a variety of causes, even good ones, are less effective.

But if the NRA has any dirt on Harry saved up, now is the time to see that it gets out, <i>pour encourager les autres</i>.

662 @653
The ways of modern tyranny are more subtle and effective.
They will make detailed disclosure of gun ownership mandatory in all healthcare, routine DMV registrations, etc so there will be de facto registration of all guns, under criminal penalty.

Then you willl have to fill out your semi-weekly 30 page Federal Form XYZ-4677(i) detailing the current disposition, location, state of repair, serial number, magazine capacity, grip type etc of all firearms, along with the filing fee, and companion Federal Form ZZJ-1212 for all ammo.

And of course you will need certification from your physician that you have never sought mental health counseling, are under no physical or mental disability, and certification from your State that you are engaged in no marital law proceedings, and have never been convicted of anything other than a parking fine (because we can't have "crazy criminals running around the children with guns" of course).

Failing to file any of the forms on time, or required fees, or insurance surcharges will of course result in the immediate revocation of your "privilege" of gun ownership because "common sense regulation" of course, along with cancellation of your health insurance and revocation of your drivers license, and suspension of your car registration. Of course anyone attempting to go through a toll booth with a Federal Firearms suspended registation is guilty of a felony, which of course will debar you from firearm ownership for life, because common sense.

Get the picture?

663 I hadn't read much up thread before posting, and I wish it weren't so, though I see many others (e.g. Half cocked hat) have reached similar conclusions

664 I'm thinking we should tie the Second Amendment to the First. Start imprisoning the advocates of gun confiscation. Or just hang them.

I gotta laugh at the glowing reports of countries that ban guns. In fact, the US is a very safe country in comparison, so long as one excludes a few cities, all of which are gun-free.
