He thinks attitudes are changing, and welcomes the introduction of same-sex marriage in California in 2008. "I think it must be really hard for actors to be out publicly," he continues. "But in terms of actors, I think you’re a better actor the less people know about you period. And sexuality is a huge part of that. Whether you’re straight or gay, people shouldn’t know anything about your sexuality because that’s one of the mysteries that you should be able to play." Actually, Everything's a Problem (a parody of an SJW tumbr site run by Sonny Bunch) is trying to hint, while staying "in character," that Damon may mostly be talking about his own choice to keep his private life private, or about the general annoyance of having to deny gay rumors about himself. That is to say, faced with an area of questioning he found to be uncomfortable, he just sort of mumbled something off the cuff that was intended to be incoherently deflective and which doesn't necessarily reflect his well-thought out beliefs (if such a thing exists). But of course the Social Justice Media pounced, as you can see from the thirty six million denunciations of Matt Damon that any "matt damon gay" google search will disclose. A group of Democratic lawmakers called on Monday for the U.S. State Department's internal watchdog to investigate the removal of Malaysia from a list of worst offenders in human trafficking following concerns that politics may have played a role in the decision.
The State Department's annual Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report, issued in July, upgraded Malaysia from the lowest tier, potentially smoothing the way for a landmark free-trade deal with the Southeast Asian nation and 11 other countries. Hmm, redefined marriage was "introduced" in CA in 2008. Wasn't that the year that, for the 3rd time, the voters of that state rejected the attempt to redefine marriage? Yes, yes it was (Prop . Fortunately, the CA state constitution was de facto repealed/amended by 5 or 6 people after that to nullify yet again the popular/cultural verdict, so a few hundred people could feel better about themselves for a few days, or something. And I have an improvement on Damon's formula. I know nothing about the actors, and don't see almost any of their work. Nothing is spoiled. Oppression is everywhere.
Emma Watson has never been shy in expressing her support for women's equality, especially when it comes to fighting back against the rampant sexism in Hollywood. In a recent interview with The Guardian, the actress used straightforward numerical facts to explain the inequality of gender representation in the film industry. "I have experienced sexism in that I have been directed by male directors 17 times and only twice by women," Watson said. "Of the producers I've worked with 13 have been male and only one has been a woman." Ace, sadly, has terrible taste in movies and music. It's ridiculous. He overthinks movies and over analyzes them like the last Bond flick, Skyfall. His tastes in music is just weird. I remember him saying he loved the song from Nightshift. It was terrible. I lost respect for him because of it. He likes the same music as JeffB

Shaky cam is a retarded gimmick in almost every application. It's not how the eye views things, no matter how "shook up" one is or how much movement you are engaged in from the viewers perspective. There's a reason film makers who knew what they were doing adopted the steadicam for such sequences (viewers perspective). Quick pans, tilts., tracking shots etc do the job and don't give you a headache. Even if you are shaking your head like an epileptic, you eyes naturally focus on a steady point. Shaky cam replicates the viwer wildly 'shaking" one's eyeballs, for no good reason. Of course adopting the old cinematic techniques means working harder and setting up shots properly.

Lorraine Bracco is one of the worst actresses of all time, she's so awful its distracting and ruins the entire film.
Except in Goodfellas she's so good I didn't even notice it was her. Which just goes to show, with a good director and the rest of the cast having talent, even trash can be made pretty good. Writing helps, too. Compare her "work" in Medicine Man with Goodfellas. Its like two different people. Posted by: Christopher Taylor at September 28, 2015 09:31 PM (39g3+) 339

The one place it makes sense is if the camera itself is a plot point, like the found-footage films. In the opening of Saving Private Ryan it's meant to remind the viewer of the perspective of a Robert Capa-type combat photographer. Everything else is just hackery.
Posted by: IllTemperedCur at September 28, 2015 09:19 PM Yeah, if it's "actual" footage, it at least makes sense. It may not make it watchable, though. With SPR... I don't know. It's been a long time since I've seen it and I don't remember how much it's used at the beginning. In very, very small doses, a second or two every now and then... ok, maybe. But to simulate a combat photograper, there should actually be a combat photographer in the sequence and the footage should be cut in to the scene expicitly as in camera work. Meteorites were viewed as bits of the divine. Descending from the skies in a fiery streak and with a boom sometimes. Best part though were the nickel-iron ones that could be made into weapons. And because of their origin, considered magical.
But yeah, most human tribes grew past that. Islam parades around a meteorite that was claimed to be pure white but has become black due to the iniquities of Man. But I doubt the Soviet Justice Wankers will raise an outcry over the implicit racism for fear of losing their heads. Posted by: Anna Puma at September 28, 2015 09:58 PM (1Q//P) 421

It is too long. A hallmark of Costner movies from the early-mid 90s. But, to date, it probably the most realistic Earp pic ever done. I guess Ace isn't here, but I was thinking that instead of a weekend book club thread (which requires advance preparation, and I notice we haven't had one for over a month) a weekend MOVIE thread would be fun. Not a discussion of one movie, like Ace's movie reviews. But a broader topic, like movie genres, certain actors, directors, etc. People like to talk about what they enjoy, and it would probably be low on swearing and personal abuse. Just off the top of my head, you could have topics like: Favourite Christmas movies Humphrey Bogart Westerns Red Scare movies Comedies of the 1950s, 60s, 70s, etc. Novels into film etc. etc. Posted by: Dr. Mabuse at September 28, 2015 10:11 PM (VBbCO) Posted by: t-bird at September 28, 2015 10:11 PM (FcR7P) 463
Doc was rather suspect.
Louis L'Amour points out that the only time there's any record that Doc Holliday shot anyone was at the OK Corral event. Gambler, and people were scared of him apparently (probably because he had no real desire to live) but not the death dealing gunslinger he's depicted as often in movies. The rock at Mecca predates Islam. Yeah, its part of the old Arabic religion that Muhammad co-opted when he built an Arabic version of Judeo-Christianity. Culturally, I understand why Islam does well in places like Saudi Arabia. But elsewhere its just oddly out of place. Posted by: Christopher Taylor at September 28, 2015 10:12 PM (39g3+) 464

one of the oddest phenomena in tv is "frasier". i never saw it during its original airing but i've taken to watching it on late nite reruns/
anyways, all of the actors except the lead, kelsey grammar, are gay apparently, tho they play straight. but they're so obviously gay that it's like an inside joke that they're gay playing straight playing straight playing gay... or something. the most obvious and just simply obnoxious is a guy named david pierce who thinks he's a comic genius but is simply irritating. bizarre figure who's so obviously gay that his romantic story lines have no credibility. in any case, he's really better cast as a serial killer in his many manic episodes. in a freeze frame he often looks like a psychotic killer. really. very bizarre actor and show. but well produced, professional and smoothly done. so there. You kids and your disgust with Jon Gruden.
Why, when I was youngster, we had Dandy Don Meredith, Howard Cosell, and the worlds most boring man, Frank Gifford. Frank tried to do the game, while Don and Howard put on a show. Howard made his reputation by hyping and befriending Mohammed Ali early in his career. I think even Ali got sick of him after a while. Howard used to make up things about knowing ballplayers and being their confidant. I remember one game where he said he had spoken to Gary Burley, who was a defensive end for the Bengals. The next day, Burley said he had never met Cosell. It was that kind of constant bullshit that made the show insanely unwatchable sometimes. I think Gifford said one time that Cosell was drunk in the booth one night and threw up on his shoes. Every time I think Gruden is getting weird, I just remember a Frank Caliendo impression of him, and it all gets better. It's all make believe anyways. When I was a wee little lad, I had a yellow jacket pop me right on my little you-know-what when I was taking a pee. I was down at my grandmothers house and took a leak behind an old shed. I don't know if I happened to hit the opening of a nest in the ground or what, but one just dive bombed and popped me.
It was all my grandmother could do not to laugh. Years afterward, she'd tell that to everybody, embarrassing the hell out me. She'd just bust out laughing thinking of this little boy running to her, with his little you-know-what hanging out, screaming.... Yeah, it's funny. I still have a little mark, don't know if you'd call it a scar. It's a "distinguishing characteristic", I suppose. Francesca Annis as Lady Jessica, she just exuded presence on the screen. Her Lady Jessica not only looked like royalty, but she carried herself as a queen with great dignity. The SyFy version is closer to the book but not as visually memorable in many ways nor are the actors as memorable.

The Lynch Dune in it's overly Baroque style just exudes how really thin the culture overlay is. Simmering underneath are Italian city-state feuds over goods that keep them propped up but incapable of producing on their own. Then toss in the Fremen/OPEC sitting on Boehner's supply of orange tint.
Posted by: Anna Puma at September 28, 2015 10:30 PM (1Q//P) I just saw some weirdly fascinating documentary called something like "BLahbamov's Dune". I can't remember the guy's name but it was slavic, though he was, apparently, Spanish. He started putting together his version of Dune back in the 70s, I think, and it was the story of how great his Dune was and how all the later sci-fi movies ripped him off (even though he never got to actually shoot his movie). The gang he put together to work on the movie ended up working for lucas and spielberg and the rest. And David Carradine was going to star in it. It was an interesting documentary. The impression I got from Jodorowsky's Dune was that it would have been a fascinating project to work on, but, it appears to have been unfilmable. Too many scattershot ideas and an overemphasis on the avant garde. It would have been trippy, but incoherent and impenetrable.
