Did Ahmad Really Build a DIY Clock, Or Did He Just Take a Commonly-Available Radio Shack Alarm Clock Out of Its Case and Stick It In a Pencil-Box?

And if so, in what sense is this an "invention," let alone one worth showing of to anybody?

You know what bothered me? That he kept calling this 'his invention." Anyone with any kind of science knowledge would know he had not made "an invention." He would say "my experiment" or "my DIY clock." He wouldn't keep claiming that he "invented" something that has been on the market for like 50 years.

23 The one left/lib comment that made me go "hmmmm .." was that nobody in a position of authority or responsibility ACTED like they thought there was a bomb.

The kid waited .. with the supposed bomb .. in the school.

The other kids remained in school, despite the claim that there was also a bomb colocated there.

The cops put the kid in the car with the presumptive bomb ...

I'd give more credence to Public Safety rather than Racial Grievance Trolling if the principal evacuated the school and the bomb tech rolled an EOD robot up to the 'clock' and blew its shit up.

That being said, the cops said they arrested the kid because he could not explain what it was they were looking at. "It's a disassembled clock" only came out later.

Because it's literally a digital clock with the case taken off.

Like, kid went to walmart, bought a clock, a screw driver, a pencil case, and some tape, then took the clock apart and taped the parts together inside the pencil case.

92 What nobody has yet addressed is that putting the guts of that clock into a pencil case is an exceedingly dumb thing to do. I mean, what is the purpose of a clock? It's an appliance that you look at so you tell what time it is, right? And in acknowledgement of that fact, clock manufacturers generally make them such that they can be placed on a desk or table, or hung on the wall, so that the display, be it analog or digital, can be readily seen, right? Putting a clock into a case that can be closed up, obscuring the display is just dumb.

And if the object of his stunt was to teach "how a digital clock works", then mounting the components neatly on a piece of board, with little descriptive labels, would have been much more to the point.

Really, Occam's Razor tells me that the reason this piece of junk looks like a hoax bomb is that it was intended to look like a hoax bomb. Trolling, full stop.

Say I take an old clock radio out of its case, reassemble it in a suitcase, and leave it outside an Islamic Community Center.

(A STRICT HYPOTHETICAL, of course.)

What would the reaction be? Who would they immediately call, and how fast? Would their reaction be ANY different than the school's?

these are the facts

he "made" it

be showed his 1st period Tec Teacher, who said pit that away

instead he brought it to 3rd period English and turned it on, and it made distracting sounds

which pissed the English teacher off

she sent him to the principal, who saw the "device", said oh shot better safe than sorry, and called the police

Police came, and said the little shit was "evasive" and wouldnt directly answered their questions

they arrested him not for a real bomb but a "hoax" bomb. The public policy reason for the laws against hoax bombs are the same for fake bomb threats and yelling "fire" in a crowded theater.

and I think he and his father meant it to look like a device I think they meant for him to be the face of a victim of Islamaphobia, a Muslim Rosa Parks

I dont think they thought he would get arrested but I am sure they are delighted he did

who took juniors picture?

who disseminated it?

he is a minor, his name and picture were not distributed by the school or the police

this was a stunt.

But I think the school handled it, well, how they had to handle it.

Unfortunately, we have silly "zero tolerance" laws wherein kids get suspended for eating pop tarts in to the shape of guns, or going "pow pow" and making gun-like motions with their fingers.

The kid had what can only be described as a "hoax bomb" that he did not even identify as a "taken apart clock" until AFTER he was booked by the police for the crime of "making a hoax bomb".

I mean, I agree that the zero tolerance stuff should be changed, but that's the law. The administrators had no choice. The police had SOME leeway, but I also understand why they arrested him.

Boys a little older than he tinker with cars to make them go faster or look cooler.

In Junior High, one kid converted his dad's old lawnmower to run on alcohol instead of gasoline. It worked, too.

If this was a science fair project, I would tell the kid nice job and move on to something more worthy.

C'mon, there was nothing of a "did it myself" nature in that "invention".

It was akin to him skinning a squirrel and sticking the carcass in the same case -- "Yowsa, I created a squirrel!"

Derivative and uninventive, just like every other scientific "accomplishment" out of the muslim world for centuries now.

If he'd been a blond kid named Thoresen, would cops have been involved? Because I think maybe not. It suddenly became sinister because he's a muslim geek, and not the regular kind. And that kind of stupid should be called out, even if it was started by a kid doing something kinda dumb.
Posted by: Joel at September 18, 2015 07:16 PM (9m5f+)

Yeah, I agree that as a 14 year old I tinkered with stuff and was also stupid. And when I was 14, I probably would not have got arrested if I had brought that clock in a pencil case to school.

But in 2015 America, anyone of any religion or background would have gotten the same treatment. How do I know that? Because it happens ALL THE TIME. If you follow the news, you will know that in the last 2 years alone, there have been dozens of cases making national news, and hundreds if not thousands NOT making national news of kids getting suspended (and many times arrested) for pointing their finger in the shape of a gun, for eating pastries in to the shape of guns, for possessing cap guns and other clearly toy guns on school buses and in school, for having plastic toy replica guns on their key chain, and even for wearing NRA t-shirts with guns on them.

All of those things have happened in the last 2 years, and all have made national news.

So I'm sure there are several Jimmy Smiths from the WASPyest families imaginable who got arrested for "hoax bombs" and "hoax guns" in the last month alone (since school has started).

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at September 18, 2015 07:26 PM (39g3+)

198 Yeah it's pretty definitive that it was just an old clock radio removed from its case and running off of a battery. So Ahmed isn't really the oppressed inventor genius he's been made out to be. But given his apparent interest in electronics it's possible he had some vague idea about modifying it to do something.

But then 14 year old boys are dumbasses so he may have thought it would be cool for the alarm to go off in class from a pencil box or even that a semi-kinda fake bomb-ish thing in a briefcase would be a fun prank. But one thing 14 year old boys are not known for are well thought out false flag hoaxes. Their talents lie elsewhere.

No, they do run the clock.

At least mine does. It's a 9 Volt battery, not a little watch battery (which would be all that was needed to keep the time).

I know it works because I use my clock radio as a radio running off the 9V pretty regularly when I'm working outside.

Posted by: Pappy O'Daniel at September 18, 2015 07:35 PM (oVJmc)

I'm not sure about that. The alarm might still work. It's the display that's mains-powered, and is the big power drain. After all, you can buy battery-powered digital alarm clocks that beep on battery power. Looks like the "beeper" in that clock is a Sonalert (tm) or something similar, and those do indeed sound off on 9 volts, quite loudly.

After all, if you think about the purpose of an alarm clock; it's to wake you up at the appointed hour, right? Even if there was a power failure overnight, still ongoing at 0700. Making it so the alarm, at least, would still sound in the event of a power failure would be a design plus, in my book.

Depends on the clock (usually meaning how much it cost).

Right, it's an uphill battle against the liberal gun grabbers trying to remove the entire concept of guns from society, but that's where the law stands in most states.

The school must alert authorities about any weapon, or anything that looks like a weapon, or anything that may even slightly look like a weapon.

It's beyond stupid, but that is how the laws are written in most states. It all happened post- columbine, and was pushed by the brady campaign against gun violence (or whatever theyre calling themselves these days) and democrat politicians.

So now to act OUTRAGED that this school followed the law is... disingenuous.

361 My android phone does, not sure what Apple's architecture does. But it's broadcast signal, so no data.
It wants earbuds/headphones attached, because it uses the wire as an antenna, but you can switch to speaker even with them attached.
You might check Apple's store.
Posted by: Pappy O'Daniel at September 18, 2015 07:54 PM (oVJmc)

A lot of the RF chips in smart phones have the capability to demodulate broadcast FM signals as well. Of course they're not usually optimized for this and don't have a decent antenna so the output will be crappy but they do work. Some of the carriers have enabled FM functionality in their Android phones. Apple though will probably never do this in their iphones unless it's explicitly designed in as a new feature with good quality i.e. the iFM receiver.

430 I'm an electrical engineer. I second the author. The kid didn't make anything. That's plainly obvious and had exact same first impression when I saw the pics of the "invention." If the kid were to develop a clock from scratch it wouldn't look anything like this. The teacher would provide a microcontroller development kit that would be the basis for the circuit, like TI or Arduino. And even then the kid wouldn't be "inventing" shit, he's just doing very typical embedded programming exercises. Clocks, stopwatches, etc., this is all very typical "hello world" type applications that people work on to familiarize themselves with a particular microcontroller or development environment. Nothing special about it at all. Not to harp on the kid of course, nothing wrong with taking stuff apart. Embedded development is pretty advanced stuff, so I wouldn't expect him to be doing it. But there certainly are kids his age who are. But yes, for sure, this whole thing is highly suspicious. If he was doing this "for school" I'd expect him to be using a proper development kit. Hoax makes sense. And isn't his dad also involve with CAIR? He is a politician from Sudan or something? And recently we had the business with the Pam Gellar event in Dallas? Maybe a whole lot of coincidence and there's no connection here, but clearly things are being blown way out of proportion and it seems to be intentional. Something stinks. Either way, teachers were right to be suspicious and respond accordingly. I think they went overboard with putting the kid in hand cuffs (I mean rrrreally?), but certainly appropriate to sit him down and grill him. Imagine if he (or anybody) had rolled into the white house as part of a guided tour and they found that in his backpack. And he's like, "oh, I'm just a visiting student with a school group here to tour DC, this is my science project." It still looks suspicious. You damn right they are going to interrogate that kid. What if he had been a white kid who liked to dress all goth?

If taking apart a Radio Shack clock, and taping its innards into a pencil case represents the kind of thinking that gets one into MIT, then an MIT degree is almost good enough to get you a job in which you ask "Do you want fries with that?"

This stunt is about at the tech level of a reasonably bright 8-year old. A 14-year old who has any tech interest at all should at least be capable of building a digital clock from a kit, if not from scratch.

448 387 I hear that the Islamic 'refugees' are now trying to get to Hungary via Serbia. Some people have very very short memories of what the Serbs did to Muslims in the 1990s.

All the euro countries are backstabbing the living hell out of each other, and posturing as liberal saints while they do it. Serbia is letting them all through because they know they don't want to stay in Serbia.

This started when Merkel thought she could preen for the domestic market, kicks off a migrant invasion in the hundreds of thousands, possibly millions, by inviting them all. Then she calls Hungary racist for trying to stop them and tells it to let them through. Then when the first wave gets through, she panics, closes the border.

Croatia called Hungary racist, said Hungary was violating EU treaty laws by closing the Hungarian-Serbian border, said it will let them through and invited them to come. 15,000 showed up out of Serbia in 2 days. Croatia panics, closes the Croat-Serbian border. Slovenia complains Croatia is violating EU treat laws.

Croatia tries to send all the migrants into Hungary, sends 19 packed buses through. Hungary deploys the military and decides to build a fence on the Croat-Hungarian border too. Slovenia, the only other country besides Hungary bordering Croatia to the north , closes the Slovenian-Croatian border in violation of EU treaty laws.

And this has been like what, 1 week?

Pretty much any digital clock with an alarm can used as a timer for a bomb. When the first VCRs came out the IRA was quick to start using their timers to set off bombs since they were accurate and could be set to go off at a precise time up to a week later.

458 Since it doesn't seem to have been mentioned yet, here is a further bit of _res ipsa_ regarding little Mohammed the genius inventor:

Mini-Mo and his father, the vocal CAIR activist, allege all kinds of awful, terrible, no-good, Islamophobic and racist things were said by the local police as the cops questioned Mini-Mo.

The police strenuously dispute all of this, but, they are prevented from releasing the transcripts (and recordings) of what went on at the police station unless the Mo family sign a release, because of privacy laws.

The family are flatly refusing to sign that release.

That not only speaks, it speaks VOLUMES about what's really going on here. This is planned Astroturf agitprop, exactly as the Muslim woman who claimed to have been denied a can of soda pop on her airline flight, and instantly was all over Twatter and Farcebook with her claims, was planned agitprop.

565 Never forget that the whole Rosa Parks incident was dreamt up by white lawyers in New York City months ahead of time.

She was basically an actress/activist selected beforehand to sit on a specific seat on a specific bus, as media was notified.

The whole thing was a staged incident.

The whole clock thing is self-evidently in that category.

Crusades start in 1095.

460 years after the first Christian city was overrun by Muslim armies.
457 years after Jerusalem was conquered by Muslims.
453 years after Muslims plundered Italy.
427 years after the fall of Constantinople to the Muslims.
380 years after France was attacked by Muslims.
249 years after Rome itself, the capital of the Catholic world was sacked by Muslim armies.

By the time the crusades started, two thirds of the Christian world had fallen to the Muslims.

Just saying.

Kid took a working clock apart and put it in the case. Teacher thought it was suspicious when it beeped in class, principle called cops as prob legislated to do.

COPS said he was being evasive as to what it was for and THATS why they arrested him. (For bomb HOAX, thus no lockdwn)

Behind the scenes, Dad is in CAIR and an agitator. Prob told kid to whip this event up, and thats why kid was evasive.

602 Oh, for cryin' out loud!!!

The kid is a KID!!! He probably got hold of some kit or something, and put it together. Maybe there was a smidgeon of originality to it. I suppose it was some ridiculous media type that built this kid up by calling him an "inventor", or maybe they decided to simply believe some dopey kid who doesn't know better when the kid claims to have an "invention". It makes the story more outrageous if you make the kid out to be the next Bill Gates.

And c'mon! Kids like to bring special stuff they've done into school for Show and Tell. What's so mysterious here?

The thing is, it makes perfect sense to be alarmed if some Muslin kid has an unusual electronic gizmo that goes "beep", and the administration of the school isn't going to be able to tell whether it's a bomb or not. But it still seems like handcuffing the kid and stuff should have been avoided.

606 Yes, he just re-packaged a clock. What difference does it make? In fact, the more was obviously a commercial repackaging, the more ridiculous is the argument that people confused it for a bomb.

And was it a plot by CAIR or his father to trap the school and police in a web of their own ignorance, arrogance, and prejudice? Again, what difference does it make? It was the government official's choice to play the part of the villain in the hypothetical plot.

Seriously, guys, I've been building electronics stuff since grammar school and a lot of it looks more bomb-like than Ahmed's clock. I'm having a hard time going along with the proposition that it's perfectly reasonable that I be handcuffed and arrested for it.

611 To be fair, the little tyke wouldn't have ever heard of Muslims inventing anything, because he's not 650 years old.

612 Well, yeah, I suppose it's possible that this is some kind of plot to get us to disarm ourselves, or drum up sympathy.

So it's one of those cases where the cops are perfectly justified in arresting a kid for threatening the school with a fake bomb - and then the kid changes his story for the media, who are only too glad to brand him a "victim"?

I guess that sounds reasonable. Sometimes the cops and school authorities AREN'T being complete idiots, I guess.

Posted by: Optimizer at September 18, 2015 09:29 PM (/q6+P)

613 So, again, it's a KID. Sometimes kids do stuff to stir up trouble and test boundaries. And a kid doesn't even really know what an inventor really is. Why is anybody wasting their time on this kid, and on the grown-ups getting themselves worked up over it?

Posted by: Optimizer at September 18, 2015 09:21 PM (/q6+P)

His pro-jihad daddy put him up to it, if he (daddy) didn't build the hoax bomb itself. And kid clearly did not cooperate with the cops, who had to investigate under the zero-tolerance rules in place in schools.

If you were going to build a hoax time bomb, what would you do different? Other than the absence of fake explosives, this thing is the very image of a Hollywood prop guy's idea of a suitcase bomb. Had there been fake explosives included in the "clock", a conviction on a hoax bomb charge would have been a slam-dunk. Which is probably why Ahmed or his daddy didn't include any. An attempt to bait the school authorities and/or cops into a hoax bomb prosecution that would likely fail. Plausible deniability. It's agitprop all the way, baby.

615 according to WFAA the first report on the story they did:

"Officers said Ahmed was being "passive aggressive" in his answers to their questions, and didn't have a "reasonable answer" as to what he was doing with the case. Investigators said the student told them that it was just a clock that he was messing around with.

"We attempted to question the juvenile about what it was and he would simply only say it was a clock. He didn't offer any explanation as to what it was for, why he created this device, why he brought it to school," said James McLellan, Irving Police."

Sounds reasonable to me.

bringing a clock that looks like a bomb to a place filled with kids in a state where terror has occurred? Our fault for caring!

Posted by: JarvisW at September 18, 2015 09:39 PM (3+E+K)

618 I guess the reason I can't get worked up over this story is that I'm perfectly happy if some foreign-born born or 1st-gen Muslim gets extra scrutiny, so the only REAL problem here is that popular culture is against that.

If Saudi Arabia had a problem with middle-aged white guys blowing crap up in their country, it would be perfectly fair for them to give ME extra scrutiny if I went to live THERE, too.

It's just rational, and to be otherwise is a fantastic waste of resources that unfairly puts scrutiny on EVERYBODY, and endangers us besides.

619 silk screening a circuit board would be pretty rare, to begin with. normally you'd just use a breadboard and probably a barrel jack for DC power-- so there wouldn't be a transformer sitting semi-loose. No shortage of good looking displays that could be had, but that is probably the most interesting to build. If it was built, it wouldn't normally conveniently attach via a ribbon cable. Guess it COULD. Was wondering why it had a transformer and a 9V power supply inside the case from the beginning.. Redundant power is an added complexity you wouldn't normally employ for a demonstration project... Rather, you'd normally start with DC power and add AC if you had to. Wire it wrong and any number of terribles could happen. Answers that question. A con. so the question is why... but then, wasn't it only a few months ago the media was conned by the genius high school investor? Turns out the media aren't experts on anything. And it shows.

620 A kid builds (or reassembles it, whatever) a clock and brings it to school and sizable number of the commenters here think he was making a trial run or it was a setup by the father? It's moronic.

Maybe the kid has an interest in electronics. He did show the clock to his engineering teacher earlier in the day because, presumably, he was proud of it. He never claimed it was a bomb, he claimed it was a clock which it is.

And he got arrested for having a Goddamn clock. Call the cops? Sure. Then give the kid a good talking to when it's determined it isn't a bomb, which, again, it wasn't nor was it ever claimed to be, and call it a day. Anyone who doesn't think this was an overreach has lost it.

628 Is there something more to the story?
Maybe, don't care.

Did his dad try to set this up?
Maybe don't care.

Was CAIR involved?
Maybe, don't care.

What do you care about then Gekko, anything?
I care about one thing.
The cops decided it was appropriate to interrogate a minor without parent, guardian, or adult present on the child's behalf.
And they did this AFTER they admit they KNEW it wasn't a bomb.

A minor isn't assumed to know their rights; so there is to be an adult (parent/guardian, or as a last case a State appointed somebody) there to advise the MINOR on his rights.
That's why minors can't sign contracts (or as another example, waive their right to have an attorney present during questioning).

So that part CAN'T have been "staged" because you'd need the COPS in on it to "stage" it and agree THEY are going to be so stupid as to violate the rights of a minor.

I don't only defend civil rights of kids when it's politically viable for "my side".
If you do, maybe re-evaluate what you're doing.

630 This is a poor analysis, I think. He likes messing with electronics, so he likes taking things apart, putting them back together, and calling them his inventions. There's no law saying a kid has to be 100% accurate in describing his hobbies.

631 From having had more dealings with Muslims than I would actually care for, here is my take. Many of them have the IQ that you would expect from generations of cousins breeding with each other. They also tend to have egos and self esteem that is all out of proportion to their actual abilities and accomplishments. Their families also tend to praise them, at least the sons, for even the most minor and trivial achievement. Think of those people to whom Simon Cowell would give the bad news that they had no talent even though their families had been telling them they were great for years. It is an entire culture built on the Dunning-Kruger effect. They are too stupid to know that they are stupid and they get murderously furious when anybody points it out to them. If you want to understand why Muslims hate Israel so much, it has little to do with religion and everything to do with somebody transforming some of their third world shit hole territory into a first world country.

633 Once again obama acted stupidly. He is either inserting himself in a local story for political gain or he truly believes that the muslims invented electricity.
