The problem was not the helicopter. The helicopter failure was the symptom of a gutted military and how incompetent leadership had degraded its capabilities over the years.
Good leadership could have made it happen with the given resources. Carter did not have that leadership.
IIRC, inter-branch squabbling transformed the rescue plan into a super Joint op with too many moving parts.

Audi issued several recalls despite finding nothing was wrong - extensive investigation determined drivers were pushing the wrong pedal when their cars "accelerated unintentionally."
But that's why newer cars have their poor pedals scattered all over the footwell so you can't heel-and-toe properly.
I suspect much of the list is researched that poorly.

Similarly, 1980s Audis did NOT suffer from "sudden acceleration syndrom". Where to start? First, a failure to engage in contingency planning. A good leader would not let success depend on all the planets being in perfect alignment.
Second, a good leader would kick ass among the services to make fucking sure they worked together. In Carter's position, I'd make clear that anyone evincing one scintilla of inter-service rivalry would be cashiered tomorrow morning, and that if the mission failed, they'd ALL be out on the street the next day. Then I'd look around the room, and ask for questions. But I wouldn't make threats verbally or explicitly; long before this, I'd have made each of these positions crystal clear subliminally.
Third, don't micromanage from Washington. Delegate responsibility AND authority in equal measure, then leave it to those to whom you delagated the task. While you hope to God they pull it off.

It occurred to me later, though, that if Trump had a single illegal working at any of his companies, given the way he's talked about Obama these past several years, his companies would've already been shut down. Look at how all those Republican-owned Chrysler and GM dealerships were shut down in the big car company bailout, and the IRS targeting of conservative groups for added scrutiny (and the illegal collusion between Lois Lerner and the DoJ to try to get those groups' founders prosecuted for merely being conservative)...
Yeah, I think if any of Trump's businesses employed any illegals, he'd have already been prosecuted for it.

Hiring Corey Laudner in Iowa and now bringing Clovis on board (clovis was previously with perry) has me convinced. These are THE two guys in Iowa. Barring any major f up, I think Trump will sweep IA, NH, and SC. Depending on any gope machinations or candidates dropping out, etc.
Every time I visit this blog, I see a Trump ad. He builds billion dollar buildings and knows that the midleman must always be taken care of. See his olive branch to weekly standard guys. NRO has gone off the rails on him so he might be forever done with them. Federalist is more of a blip. I think the very smart set, such as Ace, realize that pretty much nothing aside from throwing a kitty off the roof or some crazy gaffe derails Trump.
Even Rich Lowry I think is trying to set a different tone at NRO by embracing Trump's immigration policy full stop.

He maintained until his dying day that the brakes had failed, but bystanders, myself among them, checked out the car immediately after the incident, and found the brakes to be in perfect working order. Brake lights, too.
And '61 Studebaker Cruisers didn't have any fancy-ass computer-controlled anything on them. When those single-circuit hydraulic brakes failed, they stayed failed.

So, if I have this straight clovis is on board with perry, perry issues marching orders to his people to attack Trump viciously, clovis does so and then his private emails are publicized by perry people to fuck up his relationship with new boss?

Having seen a very little bit of the hugely complicated traveling circus required to support Blackbird ops away from home base, ummmmmmmm no. That jet is about the furthest thing imaginable from a kick-the-tire, light-the-fire, away-we-go aircraft that there is.
You could land the SR in a pinch in many surprising places, and fly it back out of those places, and that happened a few times. But there's no way to have the "fly it back out" part happen without also bringing along the traveling circus. Without that, the jet just won't fly.

I'm 3/4 of the way through installing a new fill valve in our toilet. I'm at the point where I'm supposed to reattach the water supply connector, but when I try to screw it on and tighten it enough to engage the washer, the silly fill valve starts twisting around as well! And even though I have petite hands and arms, I can't reach between parts to get a good grip on the fill valve to keep it from rotating while I screw on the water supply connector.
Plus, my elbows don't bend backwards so I can work between the toilet and wall, and my head is in the way!
Anybody know the secret to getting these parts to cooperate?

Might be a hand strength thing. I just did a fill/flush valve replacement, and you hand tighten the fill valve to the tank before adding the supply and nut.
What do the instructions for your unit say? Consider using tools to add an extra quarter/half turn, being very careful not to overtighten it.

Well, I kid you not, I just watched the KTVU news out of Oakland a couple minutes ago, which had a special report about Flanagan because he grew up in the Bay Area (in Oakland and Vallejo), and they interviewed one of his former neighbors who said, yep, "I can't believe he did this -- he was a gentle giant," triggering the Gentle Giant Siren above.

Sure, just about everyone there wanted sovereignty over the canal, but they did NOT want the US to cede the canal during the dictatorship of Omar Torrijos. ALL of the democratic opposition, from right to left, desperately tried to get Carter to continue Gerald Ford's policy of holding out negotiating as a carrot while demanding free speech and elections.

I've never met a Panamanian, left, right, or center, who liked Carter one bit. They still look upon him with contempt. Bush the Elder, OTOH, the mean invader who got rid of Noriega, is loved by many and respected by nearly all.

A coating of silicone caulk where the fill valve assembly seats at the base of the tank. Let it cure for two hours or so and it'll hold the valve in place as the threaded connector is spun up on the lower part of the assembly.

Cheap insurance. Those things, even the allegedly "burst proof" braided stainless jacketed supply lines, get fragile with age and can end up causing major water damage.
Or for a quick fix, if you have some CLR under the sink -- a household must-have -- soak the connector and the crust should be able to be brushed away in a short while.

Secret information is kept completely apart from the regular world. Much of it is on paper ONLY and can only be reviewed in special secure facilities with specified standards for locks, etc. Some of it can be reviewed on a special network COMPLETELY separate from the internet -- as in, a computer can be in the secret world or in the regular world, but never in both....and once in one, it can't be moved to the other.
Every man or woman who has dealt with secret information has been informed about the rules and the protocols involved in maintaining this wall. It's much like the protocols for treating Ebola patients -- you put the gowns on in a particular order, you disinfect at these steps, you use these tools to put on protection and these other tools to take it off.
The secret data on Hillary's servers is essentially the same as finding a bloodstained surgical towel that tests positive for Ebola in the Director of an Ebola clinic's personal laundry. You can argue about it being not very much, or that it would have been laundered with bleach, or that it was caught in time, or that it never got out into the real world, or any other excuse you might want to use....but the fact that secret information was found on the other side of the wall means that protocols were blown.
If the Ebola clinic's Director wanted to do the right thing, he'd go into 42-day quarantine, he'd spill all of his contacts, people in hazmat suits would be all over his house, his car, his office, his clinic....every employee would be interviewed extensively as to their knowledge of the protocols and their execution -- and rightly so, because people's lives depended on getting this stuff right. Just like leaking lists of dissidents in despotic regimes, identifying a US mole in a foreign government, or revealing interception and decryption capabilities might.
That's why the law has significant penalties for those who bridge that gap, or sit silent when they know that gap has been bridged, or try to cover-up the method by which the bridge occurred. David Petraeus got nailed for breaching the designated protocols even though nothing was leaked. Nobody caught Ebola when Petraeus left some sample vials in his home fridge submerged in bleach -- it was possibly more safe than if he'd left them at the clinic -- but it left them outside the wall if a tornado hit, or burglars, or the housecleaners threw them out, or his wife threw them at his girlfriend.
The protocols may seem nonsensical, they may seem petty, the information may seem inconsequential, it may seem like a smear....but the protocols have clearly been violated, and they were seriously and professionally engineered to compartmentalize and minimize risk (better than the CDC's Ebola protocols).

I had a situation about 25 years ago where I left my employer under honorable (but strained) circumstances and their office was across the street from the courthouse. I got a jury-duty summons and I wrote a letter back saying that it probably wouldn't be good if I encountered my ex-coworkers or management when I went out to lunch during a trial.
Even though I could have been called to serve at a couple of other local courts at the time, and I've since moved twice into different jurisdictions, I just don't get called. I think I've gotten the coveted "intelligent psychotic ramblings" classification.

If you don't already have one and you have been thinking about it, this is probably the time to buy an AR-15. A lot of companies made a lot of them during the panic and they are probably going to go up in price when the surplus clears the market. You might also want to stock up on .223 ammunition for them since that also seems to be available at bargain prices. They are loads of fun for the whole family and there might come a time when you are very happy to have bought it.

I also wonder about the rate of cancer of survivors versus a control group. Plus the "dust lady" was said to have developed a "substance abuse" problem. If it was alcohol, that is said to be a factor in stomach cancer which is what got her.
In related news any Vietnam Vet with prostate cancer is considered by the Gov. to have gotten it from agent orange. Never mind that they are all of the right age now to get prostate cancer.

It had the "anti-blow-up" modification to the gas tank, which was just a large piece of blow-molded plastic.
The floor boards rotted out, so I bought the hood off an old Ford Maverick and did some tin-snipping, pop-riveting, and caulking. voila, new floor boards... Covered them with lime green shag carpeting.
A real "babe magnet," that car was.
It was a mess, but it was my first car... so I adored it.
And, yes, I put an AM/FM/Cassette player AND 6X9" JENSENS on the first day.
