Quote of the Day I

Farghadani is one of millions of women whose basic rights are being ruthlessly violated. In countries like Iran, Yemen, Egypt, and Cambodia, women are struggling for freedoms most women in the West take for granted.

But American feminists are relatively silent about these injustices - especially feminists on campus. During the 1980s, there were massive demonstrations on American college campuses against racial apartheid in South Africa. There is no remotely comparable movement on today's campuses against the gender apartheid prevalent in large parts of the world. Why not?

Today's young feminist activists are far too preoccupied with their own supposed victimhood to make common cause with women like Farghadani.

-- Christina Hoff Sommers

Quote of the Day II

Blasphemy laws are ridiculous, outdated, historical anachronisms. But what's interesting is, in Britain, for example, we no longer have blasphemy laws - that was seen as being a great step forward... - but what they did was introduce hate speech laws instead.

So we...no longer have old-fashioned religious blasphemy laws, we have a kind of secular blasphemy laws: there are new [rules] you are allowed not to break, there are new groups you are not allowed not to offend ...and in many ways, more insidious and pervasive than blasphemy ever was - which was a dead law on the statute books for most of the last 100 years.

The Other American Hero During the French Train Attack

He was one of the first to rush the gunman - unfortunately before his guns jammed - and got shot in the neck. He was commended by French President Francois Hollande for his courage but alas wasn't awarded a Legion of Honor.

Mark Moogalian, who is reportedly a 51-year-old academic originally from Midlothian, Virginia, spotted a suspicious passenger while traveling on the Amsterdam to Paris train Friday.

"My husband told me that he had seen someone strange because he had entered the toilets with his suitcase and it lasted a long time," Moogalian's wife Isabelle told Europe1 radio Monday. "A little while later the guy came out and that's when he saw that the guy was carrying a gun."

Isabelle Moogalian, who was also aboard the train, said her husband spotted the gunman "being grabbed from behind by a different person" - thought to be a 29-year-old French banker who has chosen to stay anonymous.

Mark Moogalian told his wife to "go" and then "rushed towards the gunman to remove...the Kalashnikov."

She added: "I did not see my husband get shot, it happened too quickly and I was pretty much hiding behind seats. But I look at my husband through the seats at an angle and he looked straight at me and said, 'I'm hit!' . There was blood everywhere. I ran towards him and I could see that he a wound on his back, I then saw another wound by his neck."

Moogalian is still in the hospital recovering from his neck wound and three broken ribs along with other unspecified injuries. Spencer Stone, the 23-year-old U.S. airman, saved Moogalian's life by stopping the hemorrhaging from his gunshot wound in the neck until paramedics arrived.

Arthur Brooks on What Your Vacation Says About You

There's a surprising amount of research on vacations, and what aspects are satisfying. To begin with, vacation planning tends to bring happiness. Research in the journal Applied Research in Quality of Life shows that people actually derive most of the happiness from their vacations in the planning phase. On its own, this finding would seem to recommend lots of planning time and the creation of a complex itinerary, rather than a spontaneous getaway.

But if byzantine, hyper-planned trips bring great joy in the planning, they risk yielding almost no happiness in the taking. Research cited by the Harvard Business Review shows that people derive little to no happiness boost from vacations they perceive as stressful. Jam-packed itineraries and tight connections may look exciting on paper, but they could end up meaning you return no happier than when you left.

Only people with simple, relaxed trips seem to get a happiness boost. Think of this as the Vacation Paradox: You have to choose between being happy beforehand, or happy afterward. Sorry.
Vacations also say a thing or two about one's country of origin. In America, the icebreaker conversation topic with a stranger is usually, "What do you do for a living?" In Europe, this would be about as interesting and relevant as, "Do you floss every day?" No, for Europeans, the fallback topic is always, "Where are you going on vacation this year?" Everyone has an answer, usually involving weeks and weeks at the beach or mountains.

The data on vacation provide support for the aphorism that Americans live to work, and Europeans work to live. The average private sector American worker is offered just 16 days of paid holiday and vacation each year and has no legal guarantee to any time off. Compare this to Italy (31 days), Spain (34 days), and Portugal (35 days).

You might be rolling your American eyes at these statistics, noting, for instance, Spain's 23 percent unemployment rate. But having lived in Spain for years, I can assure you that calling attention to the relationship between mandated voluntary idleness and involuntary idleness, or unemployment, elicits reactions that run from confusion to contempt. So just keep it to yourself, and get back to work.

Massacre Averted at a...Pokemon Convention

OMG!!

Boston police arrested James Austin Stumbo, 27, and Kevin Norton, 18, on Saturday "because of threats of violence made over social media." When police searched Stumbo and Norton's vehicle parked in a garage several blocks from the Pokemon event, they found a shotgun, an AR-15 assault rifle, a hunting knife, and 250 rounds of ammunition.

Stumbo and Norton are charged with several firearm charges including unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.

Or maybe not so much. The 'threats' issued by the men seem rather lame and out-of-contexty.

Just how serious was this? The Daily Beast (linked above) captures some of the Facebook chatter, including a remark about "killing the competition, while the Washington Post gives a little more context to the remarks. A July 30th Facebook post said, ""Boys an girls this is going to be a guns and stripper weekend!!!" after Stumbo won $1000 at an earlier Pokemon event, which he apparently meant as an explanation for where the money would go.

Their biggest mistake seems to have been attending a Pokemon convention publicly followed by bringing guns into Massachusetts.

Frisky Declares "Call Me Caitlyn" Halloween Costume Transphobic and #Problematic

It's only August and this year's crop of offensive and #problematic Halloween costumes are already starting to roll in. AnytimeCostumes.com is selling this "Call Me Caitlyn" costume in its men's section, offering dudes (well, the costume is "unisex" but let's be real) the chance to "dress as the softer side of the popular Olympian," aka Caitlyn Jenner, in an outfit based on her Vanity Fair cover look. The description for the costume tries to disguise its transphobia by couching it in compliments about Jenner's "picture perfect look," but the fact remains that Caitlyn is a whole human being, and a woman specifically, not the "softer side" of the former Bruce Jenner.

While dressing up as a celebrity in an iconic look is generally totally acceptable for Halloween, it is NOT okay to turn a marginalized person's identity into a costume "to get a few laughs out of your friends."

Eh. Either way it's a guy in a one piece with a sash. But apparently one is super special and protected while the other is a bad, bad person and even worse, #problematic.

Black Lawmakers Attack Core Component of Democratic Coalition

Asian-Americans may vote reliably Democratic but now they're also a key target of Democratic lawmakers who are calling for 'diversity' in 'mostly white' tech companies like Yahoo.

Yahoo's workforce is half-white. That's not "mostly," unless you take "mostly" to mean "the highest single percentage."* But that's a semantic point: the headline/lede are misleading because they want you to think that Yahoo has an abnormally or disproportionately high number of white employees. This is-and I can't stress this enough-total poppycock. Indeed, if we look at the population as a whole, whites are actually underrepresented at Yahoo. Massively so. Non-hispanic whites make up 63 percent of the American population, well more than the 50 percent at Yahoo. Asians, meanwhile, make up about five percent of the general population but 39 percent of Yahoo's workforce.

Meanwhile 2/3 of black respondents to a Rasmussen poll say that 'All lives matter'.

28 Actually Spencer being nominated for the Airman's Medal is a very Big thing. It is an award designed to recognize uncommon bravery in a NON-Combat situation.

About a decade ago, one was awarded posthumously for an airman who was off-duty and saved someone from drowning.

Or how about this example: Early 1942. Seven Mile Airdrome, New Guinea. A 22nd Med. Bombardment Grp B-26A Marauder crashes on take-off. Plane is full of fuel, bombs, and ammunition. Now it's on fire. The co-pilot is trapped in a burning cockpit. The pilot struggles to save his friend, badly burning himself in the process. The co-pilot died in the fire but the pilot, though badly burned survived. That pilot was awarded, since it was still the USAAF, the Soldier's Medal which the Airman's Medal is modeled on.

Both cases were non-combat.

105 For all this talk about the horror and impossibility of a "mass deportation of illegals" and how all the poor anchor baby citizens can't be thrown out, and this just isn't the country we live in, yada, yada.

We did it before. Back in '54. Operation W**back it was called. No PC nonsense back then, that was the official codename. Even back then, you had the forerunners of the open borders crowd who were benefiting from them. Hell, I think LBJ was one at the time.

At any rate Ike did some deft political maneuvering (including purging the INS shops in the southwest of those who might balk), put in a general in charge, and launched it.

They started in CA, and began sweeping. Let's see your green card, buddy. Don't have one? Too bad, so sad, into the bus you go right now. Children didn't matter, they went with their parents. They hit 1000 illegals rounded up per day.

Planes, ships, and buses and trucks were used to haul 'em back to Mexico and further south.

Here's the deal. Once the crackdown started, many times more as caught "self-deported", slipping back across the border. All told, about 2 million illegals got the boot and went home.

Now, was Ike a Nazi? Were we some evil country back then? Nope, we had sense back then and there wasn't any objection other from those who profited from it.

Moo moo was mentioned, need to note that he made a correct and actually important observation today in the unseat-Boehner-resolution thread.

House is so gerrymandered by party that what we have is about 400 "safe" seats out of 435 (or something on that order - somebody may have the current turn-over numbers).

Eric Cantor upsets are ultra-rare - not just the Majority Leader part, the being-upset-as-an-incumbent part.

This is pretty key. With a death-grip two-party structure to most state election laws and procedures, and a mostly gerrymandered House, a mostly complaisant and lazy and uninformed electorate there's very little responsiveness to .... well, anything.

Oscar-winning actress Julianne Moore is campaigning that her high school, JEB Stuart High School in Fairfax Virginia, change its name. Moore and her high school friend-turned-producer Bruce Cohen are demanding that the school rename itself, and started a Change.org petition that had already amassed more than 28,000 signatures as of Monday night.

Daily Mail

Well, isn't that lovely. How does the academic achievement at that school compare to other schools? And after they change the name, how exactly will that improve ANYTHING for the minority students? Other than making Juliane Moore feel better about the fact that she's being obscenely over-paid for playing let's pretend in front of movie cameras.

This is just like the confederate flag bullshit. They can take down every confederate flag in the country and black people will have exactly the same problems that they have now.

publius, the hallucinogenic idiocy that is the quick default position even of many non-idiots when it comes to the mechanics of immigration enforcement is a thing to behold (and despair over). Right here in these comments recently we had three regulars claiming that barriers can't possibly work. Oh, and one of our oldest regulars (hint hint) not only pooh-poohing feasibility, but affordability.

Uh huh. Which is why barriers, uh, work, and have since man invented them.

A couple were actually even pretending to believe that the barrier in the San Diego sector hadn't worked. Well, I guess except for completely changing the whole regional dynamic, and ending casual crossings, and channeling all the low-grade human trafficking to other sectors (which are, criminally, not barriered and under-staffed, natch), yeah, except for that, it hasn't worked.

And yes publius just in Op Wetback - again, obviously - a demonstration of will and a little enforcement produces a hugely outsized impact. AZ's short-lived experience with its own immigration enforcement statute, absurdly over-turned by a drooling gauleiter, er, "federal judge", once again showed that. And of course a barrier (which would vary greatly and exploit the impassability of much of the terrain in large sectors), PLUS enforcement at work sites against employers - that combo would have people's heads spinning at the rate of repatriation (the proper term, not "self-deportation").

It's more than that. The guy on the left isn't even trying. Let's forget about the 5 o'clock shadow for a second. There are many subtle differences between male and female faces that must be changed to make one convincingly female:
* brow bossing reduction. The male brow protrudes more than the femake's and must be ground down.
* Eyebrow lift. The space between the eyebrow and upper eyelid is usually greater in females than with males.
* Rhinoplasty. The female nose is thinner and does not protrude as much.
* Cheek implants. Fat distribution is different in female and male faces, which can be mimicked with implants.
* Liplift. The space between the nose and the upper lip is less in females than in males.
* Mandible contouring. Women have less prominent jawlines.
*body contouring and fat distribution. Some of this is addressed by hormone therapy, but implants and fat transplantation may be required.

235 No. Seriously. There is more atmospheric nitrogen in
rainwater. And apparently lightning fuses nitrogen into N2 that

Posted by: ObjectionSustained at August 24, 2015 11:46 PM (+AaKx)

Nope. Lightning produces NOx (x = 1,2) which produces nitrous and nitric acid, i.e., fixes nitrogen gas into forms that plants can use. Bacteria reduce nitrogen oxides to ammonia, which is then incorporated into amino acids. The first half of the nitrogen cycle, bitchez!

306 There's word that this fall's *new* Bond flick, SPECTRE, will actually turn out to be a remake of "On Her Majesty's Secret Service."

One interesting coincidence: if you look at the teaser poster of SPECTRE, the pic of the bullets... is the exact same pattern of windshield bullets you see at the very end of OHMSS from 1969.

307 Otho, yeah, *not* one of the best, but AVTAK is fun as a leftover MTV-incluenced 1980s curio. Plus I personally think Duran Duran's song is one of the all-time best Bond themes; if I ever got to direct a Bond film I'd try to reuse it.

Posted by: qdpsteve at August 25, 2015 12:09 AM

I've always thought it a pity that Walken did his bond villain during that period... he was terrific in an otherwise not to stellar flick. Yeah, the duran duran theme song is one of the all time best ones.

320 Hey, MH! This is going to sound like bragging, but it's true...

You might remember the story about the stunning brunette who kept stopping by the karaoke bar where I DJ, just to hear me sing. We never did get that date -- she kept cancelling at the last minute. I decided I was done caring if I ever dated again.

So...in the last month, I've had three women ask ME if I'm interested in dinner and/or a movie with them...including Stunning Brunette, who had, it turns out, a totally legit reason for her behavior (mutual friends confirmed it). She's wanting to make it up to me (just a date, you pervs), so we're doing a lunch date this weekend.

A good friend said that women are only interested in you when you're either already taken or you just don't care. Danged if he seems to be right...

228 Moo/HUCK is consistently one of the most positive and productive commenters here. Even when I disagree with him wholeheartedly (which is more than seldom) he is unfailingly civil and polite.
Umnfortunately he is the current Emmanuel Goldstein here (jimi ray etc... left). All the wannabes who wish to show that they're in the in crowd are so busy talking endless shit about him that you'll notice most of them never say a damn thing that has any real value or creates any insight.
Many of them you'll notice never post ANYTHING that isn't talking shit about or creating a needless conflict with someone.
This has the fortuitous effect of allowing the blog assholes to self-identify by thinking they're cool demonstrating to the clique that they don't like him either.
Ace has called this behavior "tribal signaling" and spoke out against it, but that doesn't seem to faze people whose main contribution to the discourse here seems to be the talking of shit behind the back of absent people.
The real contributors, the backbone of this place, seem to have in common no interest in this sort of activity. They're too busy making genuine contributions and honoring the host's clearly-expressed wishes. I'm sure you could already identify a few of that sort here and recognize that their comments are the ones you really look forward to reading when you come here.

421 Near Graytown, Ohio is Lickert-Harder Road. You never forget it.

Of course rainwater is better on the lawn than tapwater. It's cheaper.

Alberta Oil, that thermal mass will be on your side once you cool it off. I know you know that; just try to keep it in mind until the suffering stops. My house is masonry, originally marginally insulated on the inside. I put a coating of insulation inside new sheathing on the outside, and cut the heat/cool bill in half. Recently due to a "fusebox" (if you can remember those) I had to go a few days, the only muggy days so far this year, without my hi-v central AC. So I hauled out the antique Chrysler Airtemp casement unit, and its 7500 BTU's cooled a 3600 sq foot house, eventually. Took about a day and a half to catch up, though.

In re JEB Stuart High School, there was an obituary I almost mentioned in regard to another issue. A black gentleman passed on hereabouts, a mechanic, pretty well thought of, native Alabamian. His given name was Stonewall. Just imagine that.

Jay, "civil court" is often used as the term for napoleonic courts, as opposed to those based on English common law or the US system with jury trials. It encompasses criminal proceedings as well.

The civil court system I am very familiar with had presumption of innocence, and I think that was the norm.

444 Yeah, like I said above, Jihad Jockey is having a little fun according to some ex-spurts. He likely did "find" the AK and the magazines, maybe even really under a bush in a park somewhere close to where he boarded the train.

Said bush and park where a dead drop point, where the guns and ammo were placed by some terror cell. He couldn't have likely traveled all over the place with 'em.

THey hope the French police can beat enough out of him to get a line on that cell.

368 That's interesting. When you have high combustion temperatures the NOx that is created is NO3 and NO4 and they're incredibly harmful pollutants that a horrible emissions control system was installed to reduce (EGR).
Why is that???
Posted by: MAx at August 25, 2015 12:35 AM (LAliD)

Nope. No NO3 or NO4, which don't exist. The nitrogen oxides are NO and NO2, which react with water to produce HNO2 and HNO3 (nitrous and nitric acids, respectively).

The NOx compounds ARE nasty, but the difference is that those produced in lightning strikes are presumably converted to the acids by the rain accompanying the thunderstorm that produced the lightning. NOx compounds produced by autos, OTOH, are generally produced in the absence of rain (and probably in substantially greater quantities) and just go into the atmosphere in, e.g., LA and Denver, and produce smog.

So EGR is probably worthwhile, IMO. In any case, there's nothing we can do about lightning strikes anyway.

460 I think French Courts have a 'Reconciliation' rather than an 'Oppositional' system.

Everybody's point of view contributes to "the story" so you saying, 'that's not what happened' is discounted more by 2 other people saying, 'yes it did', than say, physical or forensic evidence ...

But all of this came from Talking Heads during the Princess Di tragedy and why, for example they didn't transport her immediately to the hospital or have EMTs start first aid, before say, the police could investigate what happened ...

oh who cares, correct - prosecution is part of the court, not a separate entity. Judge or panel of judges are the expert body in place of our lay jury, so rules of evidence are few (even hearsay is weighed). Not a perfect system - but if I were forced to choose, I'd say civil court when I'm innocent, US jury trial when I'm guilty. That would give me the best odds, respectively, of walking free, all things being equal.

Yeah I try to ascertain who is the crew chief -- at the back end I assume it's the driver. It's not always easy, though, and often it seems as though there's an extra face or two who appear late in the game but don't really seem to do much.

I figure we're in for about $160 to the packers (2 days, $40 per guy per day), maybe $100 for the loaders, and then $200 for the driver/unloaders. Plus the hookup guys. I can't remember if they'll be different.

Yes it does. I managed a truck leasing company that was connected to a commercial moving company parent. My store was just me and the guy who worked for me and on a few occasions the big boss had a big residential/corporate moving thing and I gave the store to his SIL and did the job. We usually paid the packers (and tipped them ourselves), hired the loaders and unloaders and if all went well, a tip was given to me to do with as I saw fit. I usually just spread it around though I remember one kid who destroyed an ultra expensive multi-thousand dollar inlaid wood conference table by shoving it off the blankets and across the back of the truck. It hit every metal rivet and splinter on its way to the end. The client's company had gone bankrupt though and he didn't even care and waved away my talk about our insurance---we were unloading into a storage facility. Gave me a tip for myself and the crew. But no tip for the kid from me and no repeat work.

But I'm not that interested in the cyber shenanigans, and the people who pull them are boring, obviously. Not understanding the mechanics of it that well helps me not get drawn in.

Hey, AOP, what say ye? Those who've been hanging around waiting for a time to nibble in the oil patch - is nibbling time here?

If you want to meet for a beer or coffee, I will be here for a few days. Phoenixgirl has my e-mail and cell number. I am in AJ. We may be having a get-together at a pizza joint in the 'tuke on Wednesday evening. Not finalized yet.

Might be a good time to buy, if stock prices are depressed. Just make sure you buy in to a company that has some cash in the bank; enough to keep a drill or two turning. Nobody's drilling on borrowed money right now.

Thanks AOP. I'm thinking for fairly long term in any case. Definitely outfits with enough resources to to deal with the situation. Cyclical stocks are what they are, but not all dips are equal, nor are all sectors.

Oh - and it's a shame that the commenter with the brief cryptic nonsensical contributions keeps getting zapped. Or maybe it isn't.

Can you read this pal? Go play a video game or something (relatively) productive.

That may just work.

You can drop me line in the yahoo group, although I'm not sure if this name shows up there, or if it's an even sillier one.

If you're not in the yahoo group, try (literally) anything@traveltrash.33mail.com. It forwards to another account that I check.

552 So, my sister and my niece were emailing me in haiku about current familial events, and I responded that haiku were like spam -- if they were looking to be taken seriously, they should employ sestina ..... whereupon my sister said she was going to compose one.

Considering that it's a complete pain-in-the-ass of a verse-form ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sestina ), I'm expecting that she'll bail before actually does one (which is why I mentioned it in the first place).

I'd settle for a flying car. We were told those were happening back in the 1950s!

Guess I'll have to make do with my Atomic Car. As soon as I can find the teeny pellet of radioactive material that makes it run. Sheesh, I hope the dog didn't swallow that!
