NYT Commentary: Jon Stewart, the Patron Saint of Liberal Smugness

One of the only non-beatifications of Stewart in any media outlet. Worth a read.

Many liberals, but not conservatives, believe there is an important asymmetry in American politics. These liberals believe that people on opposite sides of the ideological spectrum are fundamentally different. Specifically, they believe that liberals are much more open to change than conservatives, more tolerant of differences, more motivated by the public good and, maybe most of all, smarter and better informed.

The evidence for these beliefs is not good. Liberals turn out to be just as prone to their own forms of intolerance, ignorance and bias. But the beliefs are comforting to many. They give their bearers a sense of intellectual and even moral superiority. And they affect behavior. They inform the condescension and self-righteousness with which liberals often treat conservatives....

And Mr. Stewart, who signed off from "The Daily Show" on Thursday, was more qualified than anybody to puncture this particular pretension. He trained his liberal-leaning audience to mock hypocrisy, incoherence and stupidity, and could have nudged them to see the planks in their own eyes, too. Instead, he cultivated their intellectual smugness by personifying it....

He could have made the liberals in his audience more open to dialogue across the great left/right divide by asking them to examine themselves more carefully and to admit that both ideological camps contain fools. Instead, he was a cultural entrepreneur who provided those viewers with the validation they wanted....

After all those years, the comedian turned liberal standard-bearer still didn't really comprehend the conservatives on the other side of the divide. Worse, he didn’t help his liberal viewers better understand themselves.

Ummm, I think that analysis is off. He made fun of Republicans and conservatives (political and social) as being hypocritical, incoherent, and stupid. That's really not the same thing at all as "training" his audience to identify hypocrisy, incoherence, and stupidity in general. All he did was train his audience to bark like seals at Republicans. Hooray? But seals bark without any understanding of what they're doing or why. They just do it when they get the right trigger. That's not an analytical skill applicable to other areas in life; it is reflex.

38 Snark as a form of humor is inherently passive-aggressive. It distances the snarker from the snarkee and makes engagement impossible. Liebowitz was never a puncturer of pretensions, a legitimate skeptic. He chased the same warm hugbox feeling by othering his targets that his audience got by tuning in.

52 Snark and sarcasm are the intellectually immature person's substitute for wit and satire. It appeals on an emotional level to an unserious, unthinking, and ill-informed pubic. Stewart tapped into that well and used it to shape a generation's entire worldview not by popularity, but by being popular to a small and highly influential elite. His ratings were never great, but his viewers had disproportionate influence.

Second day: "Hmmm, I wonder if they're repeating yesterday's show for some reason."

Third day: "Man, Howard must be having an off week."

Fourth day: "Guess I've caught his whole act." *click*

We can speak the truth of Stewart now? Yay!

You know, he was funny during my college years. Me and my super-conservative roommate at the time (seriously he'd be on the right side of the horde spectrum) watched him.

But it got old quick. And once Obama got elected and they could make no jokes about him, it was clear where his loyalties lied. At least Kerry was mocked.

101 The comments to the linked article are pretty telling.

I read this the other day, and thought that was the interesting part.

The Democrat-Liberal-Left audience that primarily watched Stewart went their for the daily affirmation. Sure, it could be funny in a limited way, if you agreed with the overall premise. It was not any kind of "universal" humor, that anyone could find entertaining.
You had to be in on the joke to begin with.
Stewart of Liebowicz or whatever he calls himself, could be funny. I thought an interview with Roger Ailes was funny, in that he said that 'Sure, Jon Stewart could work for Fox. Maybe as a stagehand' (Paraphrasing).

Stewart made a lot of money, and is set for life (but will probably surface again in a year or two).

Just as people listen to Rush Limbaugh, or patronize and comment at AoS, or comment at DKos or the Huffington Post. For the daily affirmation and to find people that largely agree with them. It's not a bad thing, it's just the way we are.

Rush commented on this some years ago, and that was his own view of himself and his show. He explained that he knew he was not converting that many people to his viewpoint, but was affirming and educating people who already basically agreed with him.

Leftys have all sorts of cute jokes for political murder. During the French Revolution, the guillotine was called the National Razor or looking out the republican window (reference to the round hole you stuck yr neck thru before the blade dropped). Then there was when they stripped people of their clothes, tied them together, put them on a barge, and sunk it. If a man and woman were tied together, it was called a republican marriage. The actual interview before editing was 100% different than what was aired. There were several instances in which the late Mike Wallace showed up for what he had said would be "friendly, low-key, nonconfrontational" interviews, with his _60 Minutes_ camera team in tow.

Only to find that the interview subject had their own camera team present, to independently record the proceedings. Without exception, Wallace stormed away in an enormous rage when this happened.

No, they aren't idiots. They're fools. They are objectively intelligent enough but have never trained their minds to think rationally and systematically. Further, they analyze and decide based on emotion rather than reason, and have shaped their emotion by a very limited range of carefully indoctrinated ideals.

They are, in short, what they characterize their opponents as being. They are what they think Christians are. Zealots who know only what they've been told and believe based on how it makes them feel. Its why the I Love Science idiots post 99% stupid memes and 1% science. Because they love the idea of science, not on its own merit, but as a replacement for religion and a way to mock contrary religions.

It was OK for Stewart to act as John Kerry's fluffer, because mean things were being said about Kerry and because George W. Bush was a stupid doo-doo head. (Make funny face, wait for trained seals to clap and bark.)

"Hey, Tucker, I'm a comedian. You're hurting America by disagreeing with received wisdom and arguing with someone who thinks like I do."

Cyberwar -- an Opportunity for Carly
by Roger L Simon

Although not surprising these days, news this morning that China has been reading the emails of top U.S. officials should provide yet more impetus to the emerging campaign of that "other woman candidate," Carly Fiorina. From NBC News:

China's cyber spies have accessed the private emails of "many" top Obama administration officials, according to a senior U.S. intelligence official and a top secret document obtained by NBC News, and have been doing so since at least April 2010.

The email grab -- first codenamed "Dancing Panda" by U.S. officials, and then "Legion Amethyst" -- was detected in April 2010, according to a top secret NSA briefing from 2014. The intrusion into personal emails was still active at the time of the briefing and, according to the senior official, is still going on.

With respect to Stewart's joke about him causing this, I'd say he actually IS part of the problem. They actually bring him up in debates, like he's a serious thinker or something.

So, I blame him and Colbert for marginalizing conservatives as much, even more so, than I blame Obama. He was the first, in my estimation, to point at us and say "oh, aren't they FUNNY?"

I'm not really in favor banning or shunning anyone, unless they persist in personal attacks against Morons, spew racist crap or put out hate against religions (and, even there, I'm for giving passes for attacks on Muzzies). Free speech is a good and wonderful thing, even if it stings sometimes, and is far better than the tight-ass thought-totalitarianism practiced by some websites.

I think it was less than that the left thought they'd won. They had defeated Reagan, and with Clinton, had utterly reversed and eliminated his legacy. They thought they controlled everything and the Republican Party, not to mention Conservatisim, had been totally defeated and wiped from the earth. It was all over, they were somewhat generous in their victory by not crushing us under a bootheel - in their opinion.

396 Do You Have Change for a Bowie? The Advent of Artisanal Cash

As Bitcoin, PayPal and other electronic forms of payment grow in popularity in the global economy, cash in a growing number of places -- not only Bristol and Brixton, but also Amsterdam; Ithaca, N.Y.; and elsewhere -- is becoming quite literally an artisanal object.

These are small-batch currencies designed by locals and lovingly handled by millennials, who came of age during the rise of the Internet, the meltdown of the stock market and Edward Snowden's National Security Agency revelations, and would be forgiven for becoming more wary of credit and debit cards. Many are already opting for standard paper money over plastic (when not resorting to freeganism or bartering, that is).

It used to call itself "Moo moo". Now it calls itself "Huck/Akin 2016" in order to piss on the Horde who are really just stupid Sokonzz who would vote for Huck/Akin is they could.

Basically it pisses on AOS daily and tells us that it is rain.

412 Remember, Huck/Akin (nee Moo Moo) is in favour of murdering his own grandkids, so he's got that going for him. I don't think the ghoulishness of "sciencing" on a bunch of murdered babies honestly bothers him any more than it bothered his German ancestors.

Persian again. He was nominally Muslim, his name being Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi and he came from what is now Uzbekistan. His preface appears to be devout Muslim but nothing about his life indicates any particular religious behavior and his name refers to at least a Zoroastran heritage.

"Liberals turn out to be just as prone to their own forms of intolerance, ignorance and bias." (from the NYT pull quote)

"just as prone"? - once again, as always, non-stop, from every pore, in every nook and cranny, false premises and false equivalencies.

The now-dominant urban/coastal/NPR demo, almost definitionally, is all these things - intolerant, ignorant, and biased. Stewart just made shallow cheap jokes based on this entirely make-believe world they live in inside their heads. The stupid entertaining the stupid.

"Educated, liberal" types are the sort who mindlessly accept the facially absurd unscientific crap that goes under the rubric "climate science". They can hear some cretinous Dem public figure say that Al Qaeda was popular because of the day-care centers they funded and not wonder how such a person could have any role in public life. They think higher minimum wages help people. They believe/d the absurd nonsense about there being any significant problem of medically uninsured. They think "gun control" is anything other than idiotic and ineffective social engineering. They believe every ridiculous myth and slander about Iraq (in that they have lots - lots - of company right here in the AOSHQ comments sections). They have not the slightest understanding of history, economics, the constitution, racism, national security, or any other serious topic. They are so vapid, they actually think the patheticallly unworldly, ignorant, obviously troubled and unfit Barack Obama is "smart!".

ace, you say it once in a while - the intellectual elite is neither. But it's way beyond that. The "educated" upper middle class dominant demo is - outside the thing that they do on a daily basis, from heart surgery to tech business to courtroom work - largely ignorant and thoughtless about every important area of public policy. Their children were Stewart's main audience, just clowning it up based on the make-believe world they and their parents live in.

And it's ruining the country, and worsening/endangering the world.

421 As I write this, safe in my basement bunker, stately Peon Manor is under siege. By bees. Hundreds of them for sure, maybe even thousands. How can you count tiny airborne buzzing things? I must have vacuumed up a hundred dead ones from the floor last evening alone. This all started just yesterday. I think a rogue queen has set up housekeeping in the enclosed crawl space under the front entry hall. I'm not about to go in there to check.

Fortunately, they don't seem to be the least bit aggressive, and neither me nor the dog have been stung, yet. But sooner or later, if this is allowed to go on, I will likely get stung, if only by accidentally cornering one. Activity around the hive is slack right now. I guess most of the workers are out harvesting nectar and hobos, but mostly hobos.

I have a call in to the local Hutterite colony, they being the big industrial beekeepers around here. Hopefully they will send a properly equipped crew to round up the rogue queen and her followers, and get them back on the reservation. So I am off to town to get my mail, and pick up a two-four of beer. Those hutterite boys do enjoy their beer, and who am I to say they should not.

Wish me luck.

I think this IS a fundamental difference between liberals and conservatives. Liberals refuse, even for an instant, to consider their positions and policies are wrong-headed, harming those they intend to "help" the most. I look at it like religion: the best Christians always have a shred of doubt about Christ. The liberals adhere to their religion at all costs, casting into the flames anyone, conservative or liberal who dare question it.

425 I used to joke about people "getting their news from the Daily Show." Then, three months ago at a Memorial Day party, I actually was in a conversation with someone who actually _did_ quote Jon Stewart as a news source. I practically choked on my drink.

Posted by: Trimegistus at August 10, 2015 03:11 PM (N5Jsp)

426 To be fair, it's perfectly true that Stewart did "go after" both liberals and conservatives. He was perfectly willing to criticize both parties for not being liberal enough.
