Glenn Loury, John McWhorter Discuss the Religion of Antiracism, and Its Current Pope Ta-Nehisi Coates
A very interesting Bloggingheads (and every Loury/McWhorter dialogue on Bloggingheads is interesting, and is recommended). Now, they talk about how Obama has "evolved" (in a good, embiggening way) in office, but here's the easy way to avoid that nonsense: skip to 7::06 as they begin to discuss race, and the Religion of Antiracism, generally.
McWhorter is chiefly there to put forth what I'll call the Ace of Spaces Conjecture that most of tribal signaling -- genuflecting to Ta-Nehisi Coates, for example -- is not a form of politics, but is properly understood as a form of religion. You're not supposed to ask about the parts of Ta-Nehisi Coates' claims that don't make sense, in the same way you're not really supposed to ask how Noah fit all those animals on the ark. These are not political arguments, he asserts, but "sermons." (I've previously called such non-political "political" statements "prayers" and "devotions.") Glenn Loury entertains that idea, but he's chiefly there to criticize the low state of racial discourse in America, focusing on the black side of that racial discourse, and Charles M. Blow in particular, whom he calls a "disgrace." Later in the discussion, he also challenges Ta-Nehisi Coates' particular expression of Black Male Authenticity (the street bravado, noting he had a "tool" (a gun) with which to fix a "motherf**cker") as damaging and degrading. Oh, and he rails against people like David Brooks for their racial condescending -- if you didn't read that already, for one thing, well played, but you can read it here, and see David Brooks ask, solicitously, if he's even permitted to comment upon Ta-Nehisi Coates' book. This angers Loury, who demands, sensibly, that black people be treated just as you'd treat any other political actor. You are, in short, permitted to disagree with them or critique them without securing permission to do so beforehand. McWhorter has meanwhile fleshed out the Ace of Spades Conjecture in an article in the Daily Beast. McWhorter objects to the anti-intellectual, religion-like screams of "heresy" which are spat at anyone (including himself, a black man) who challenges the religion:One is not to question, and people can be quite explicit about that. For example, in the "Conversation" about race that we are so often told we need to have, the tacit idea is that black people will express their grievances and whites will agree--again, no questions, or at least not real ones. Here and there lip service is paid to the idea that the Conversation would not be such a one-way affair, but just as typical is the praise that a piece like Reni Eddo-Lodge’s elicits, openly saying that white people who object to any black claims about racism are intolerably mistaken and barely worth engagement (Eddo-Lodge now has a contract to expand the blog post into a book). Usefully representative is a letter that The New York Times chose to print, which was elicited by David Brooks's piece on Coates’s book, in which a white person chides Brooks for deigning to even ask whether he is allowed to object to some of Coates’s claims.... As such, even Brooks has gotten the religion, critiquing Coates’s book while also making sure to say that "every conscientious American should read it." Brooks, here, is genuflecting, as America now does in general to Antiracist scripture. One is to accept that beyond a certain point--and one arrives at the point quite quickly--one is to treat logic as optional and simply have faith.... The call for people to soberly "acknowledge" their White Privilege as a self-standing, totemic act is based on the same justification as acknowledging one’s fundamental sinfulness is as a Christian. One is born marked by original sin; to be white is to be born with the stain of unearned privilege. The proper response to original sin is to embrace the teachings of Jesus, although one will remain always a sinner nevertheless. The proper response to White Privilege is to embrace the teachings of--well, you can fill in the name or substitute others--with the understanding that you will always harbor the Privilege nevertheless. Note that many embrace the idea of inculcating white kids with their responsibility to acknowledge Privilege from as early an age as possible, in sessions starting as early as elementary school. This, in [one] sense, is Sunday school.One objection McWhorter lodges is that there is no actual political demand here -- he feels, in many ways, this spares white people from any further need to act politically, because they've already Confessed Their Sins and hence are, as the catechism has it, now forgiven from sin. And not just white people -- both Loury and McWhorter note the underperformance of black students in school, and want to know where are the calls for tangible action to address this in the black community. Actions beyond merely demanding that white people Confess Their Original Sins. He doesn't dwell on that too long, but notes that's one of the things that differentiates an actual politics from a religion -- politics implies tangible political action, whereas religion can be a purely metaphysical gesture. A very interesting dialogue -- well worth your time (as long as you skip that first 7:05).

The only privilege anyone has is the right to wake up every morning and work your ass off in school or otherwise improving yourself-
and making yourself useful to other people so you can get paid.
Everywhere around the world the middle class is the same.
Everyone knows someone from the middle class or upper class who did not do the necessary things to maintain or improve their lot in society- they took drugs, blew off school, broke the law, etc -
and they fell into the lowest class, the welfare class.

It's the media that doesn't talk about this stuff. Either because they don't know or because they think it's aberrant and so is distracting or because it doesn't fit in with their own stereotypes of black folk.
Then too, you have to really know some people and live up next to them to find this stuff out because blacks don't like to air their dirty linen in front of white folk.
If those screeching about equality truly wished equality they would show the lesser side of black life (and I'm not talking about crime so much as day to day living and arguing) as a demonstration of blacks having the same tendencies and foibles as whites do.

Yeah, I was thinking along the same lines while listening to this, reading the comments there, and looking up the Coates guy (never heard of him, and I stopped paying attention to David Brooks years ago - he's such a creepy douchebag).
Listening to and reading all of this reminds me of the gay community. There is a huge industry, both underground and above ground feeding fuel and money, where a rich stratosphere is created, but not recognized by the angry ones feeding the logs into the furnace. Including themed music.
At least in this video, you hear more than one side of the story, and deeper analysis. Fine.

I think he just meant that there are Christians who are not Roman Catholic. The original phrase "The proper response to original sin is to embrace the teachings of Jesus, although one will remain always a sinner nevertheless," while a bit ambiguous, could be taken as a shorthand version of basic Protestant theology, (see my selection from the Westminster Shorter Catechism) and to characterize it as obviously unchristian based on uniquely RC theology, as Feh appeared to be doing, could be described as "confusing Catholicism with Christianity." That is the charitable assumption, anyway...

I'm not opposed to changing my mind if the facts and logic support doing so. In the case of the Iran agreement I don't think there is any information that makes it a positive.

The difference is that neither Luther nor Calvin agreed with the Catholic Church how one goes about being forgiven for those sins, or if they even could be forgiven.

When Catholics tell me this, I usually saw, "Concentrate on the foundational aspect of your faith-Reception of the Eucharist, continue to pray and read great Roman Catholics saints and writers. Of course, Francis will say things that are upsetting but he's not THE church. He's a man with political opinions. The political opinions aren't dogma. I would imagine that even Francis is solid on the foundational doctrines of the RCC.

The Catholic point of view is that the Bible contains everything you need, as an individual, to get to Heaven. That doesn't mean that everything we can and should know is contained therein, just that you don't need more than that.
I'm pretty sure that most denominations use a creed, and most of them know the Apostles' Creed or the Nicene Creed. Neither of those are found in the Bible, per se, but are considered foundational. That's one example and there are plenty of others. That doesn't mean the creeds are bad because they are not in the Bible, but that you don't necessarily need them to get to heaven.

Uhm, no. Catholics aren't really big on the proles reading scripture and they're the Church with that created most of what the Protestants consider man-made, extra-scriptural dogma and practice. Protestants are the ones who believe in scripture above all, and that "you...as an individual" are responsible for understanding interpreting it for yourself. Priests tell you what scripture means and what the Church wants you to do, pastors and reverends suggest.

No, I think that he grew up in a secular household and has largely secular friends, and as a result his understanding of the role of religion in culture and philosophy is largely derived from modern secular thought that assumes a dichotomy between reason and faith. To those of us who are religious or at least grew up in religious households, who see reason and faith as intertwined and complementary, his characterization of religion does tend to come of as cartoonish.

I'd say it helps to read the original text and lots of interpretations of it. It's also easy to read one thing in the absence of another which could lead you astray - Jesus's talk about denigrating the Holy Spirit as an unforgivable sin led me to lots of sleepless nights as a kid where I feared I'd accidentally think the Holy Spirit was unclean and be damned forever.

Oh, not at all (at least in my case) I see that the same as calling belief in AGW a religion. Religion is in the spirit, not in the black letter - for all that too much "cafeteria" style belief can render your religiosity idiosyncratic or suspect. So if I'm interpreting this correctly ... 7 + 3x = 3(x - 7)? Or 7 + 3x = 3x - 7? (Depending on what exactly is decreased by 7: x, which is then multiplied by 3, or the product of 3 with x.)
Actually, neither one makes sense. The first one reduces to 7 = -21, and the second to 7 = -7.

I don't have trouble with original sin, I'm Catholic after all, but the thing is that only Jesus and Mary, the latter through a very special protection, the former because he was God, were free from this.
In Christianity we are ALL damned by original sin unless Saved, but even when we are saved we are still sinners.
What is great about the Church of Ta Nehisi Coates is that while all white people are like this, black people, specifically American Black People are not. This is like declaring divinity.
If we say that some person is a special and is blameless and all others must make sure that they must never offend them and make continous penances, and any harm the blameworthy do to them is a completely different crime than when committed against other blameworthy, we are saying they are a divine being, a god. So basically these people want to declare the black race a magical race, a special people set aside and better than all other people, and they want to use force to enforce it.

But a white hispanic, which can be any hispanic immediately becomes a Dalit, a permanent untouchable, when they transgress, and that transgression can be as simple as voting for a Republican or as complex as being slowly cast out over a long time by exhibiting white behavior regularly. This suggests they are Vaisya, the second lowest of the specific cases, but still used as a weapon against the Dalits. Asians are clearly Shudras, almost untouchables but some carefully observed and trained may make useful enforcers.
As someone with American Indians in my family, the real kind living in trailers on reservations in the middle of the desert making jewelry and getting drunk and/or joining the army, but only if they have a chance of getting killed, I am very curious where people like my cousins will end up. Lacking further context, you tell them:
1.) First part of the sentence resolves to
7 + 3x
2.) Second part of the sentence is ambiguous and could be either of
3x-7 and 3(x-7)
3.) The equality generated by the statement is nonsensical.
Doesn't matter how they grade. The teacher should know better than to give a question like that; so either he accepts that as the correct math answer, or he demonstrates he is too incompetent to be teaching math.

There's a dispute going on in the twitter-verse right now over some equally bad math. Somebody tweeted that the $360,000,000 spent to introduce Obamacare would have been better spent just giving each American $1 million.
So then a bunch of people point out that that doesn't make sense, because there are more than 300,000,000 Americans.
But in all the arguments about the original tweet's faulty math, what nobody seems to realize is that the federal Obamacare website, all by itself, cost taxpayers over a BILLION dollars (and counting), and most of the states' websites each cost taxpayers many millions more just to construct. Plus if you add in all the added premiums and the federal O-Care subsidies -- which are costing billions of tax dollars every year -- the entire O-Care scheme will end up costing taxpayers TRILLIONS of dollars -- so the original tweet was more right than wrong (even if the math was bad).

Visiting is quite an experience because you have to go immediately from your car (near bear enclosure double fences) to the center. It's a good idea --- sort of a take-off on Eric Larson's "Beast in the Garden" where some of my former Boulder neighbors were so charmed by mountain lions wandering in their gardens they had mixed feelings about the fact that they were a menace to small pets and people. They do good work, and it's a private organization. They rescue a lot of abused animals that really have no business being kept as pets. Yep. I suppose the Kenyan government pays to help rebuild but don't know that for a fact. I seriously doubt the average American would accept living in fear of a buffalo stampeding through their house (probably closest equivalent) but too many have no problem expecting the same of others so they can get their "good feels" high.

Just remembered, one of my (many) cousins posted on FB this morning pictures of the punctures in their tent from the bear who visited them last nigh while they were camping. He said the kids had slept through it and he and his wife decided not to tell them 'til they were home (their still really young).

Only time I saw one (two) was hiking in Shenandoah Nat'l Park. A bunch of other hikers were oohing and ahhhing over a couple of adolescent bears. We got out of there fast - did not want to encounter the mama bear!

Heh, she doesn't pack, but living in the mountains ensures encounters. While mountain-biking down the maintenance road of the Vail ski resort and came around a bend and locked eyes w/a bear about 30 feet away. She slammed on the breaks, raised her arms and screamed -- and it decided to take off down the mountain.
The thing w/mountain lions is they'll attack from behind, will never see it coming.

I know of a guy whose *first* name is Wendt who graduated from Annapolis in the same class as McCain. Didn't think much of him.
I only know about him though because his wife is a dedicated knitter even though she had a serious stroke a number of years ago. She helped run the Olympic torch (with help, I'd guess) less than a year after the stroke but has had to relearn how to knit and use a wrist brace to hold the left needle. Her dad was killed in WW2. Both he and her stepdad were Navy guys (and I think officers) so it's probably no wonder she married an Annapolis grad.

I stopped following television sports talk around 2007 or so. Besides the politics getting injected everywhere, it finally became apparent to me the people brought forward as experts weren't all that bright. You're not getting any nuanced or deeply thought opinions. You're getting all "hot takes" all the time.
Started with Auburn's undefeated season in 2004. USC and Oklahoma were undefeated too, and this was before "If it ain't SEC, it ain't shit" stuff started the way it is now. It was just universally accepted that Auburn was not at the same caliber, and I could not understand why. They were damn good too.
Then, a few years later, I noticed guys like Billy Packer and Digger Phelps were pissed off about schools like George Mason (Final Four from an 11 seed) and Bradley (Sweet 16 from a 13 seed) making it in the tournament instead of whoever finished 8th or 9th from the Big 10 or ACC.
Then the heat the Packers took for casting their lot with Aaron Rodgers. ESPN talking heads just could not believe that this was even a tough call for Green Bay.
It finally clicked. Why the hell do I watch this shit? So, I don't anymore. If there is a game I want to watch on ESPN, I'll watch it, but if I want opinion, I know where I can find it online.

As others have noted, this makes no sense. However, if the last phrase was "the product of 3 and a value of seven decreased by x."
then the equation can be written:
7 + (3*x) = 3*(7-x)
7 + (3*x) = 21 - 3x
6x = 14
x = 14/6

Even the most lefty academic types assured me that of course ACA would be better than the IHS, though not as good as single payer...
When I asked them if they thoight the Health service should be fixed first the response was that with Obamacare it would be uneccesary, so no need to fix it...
Btw Reservation indians are barred from buy___ on the exchange because they are already insured by the IHS

I was not saying I was persecuted by TNC's dream of a caste system based religion, i doubt it will come to pass outside of Academia and the land of the concerned, and theredays are numbered because the whole thing is so repellant not just to human dignity but economic and technological development . In a dozen years Ta Nehisi Coates will be an aging bloviator, and in fisty he will be less remembered than Nornan Thomas.
My fear is that he or people like him will end up writing history.

You don't need Wolf, Dachsund, Doberman, Coyote, Fox...you just need two young adult wolves. Same with the Big Cats, and a ton of other 'species' which are often only different because of slightly different feathers. Same with the Horse Kind...no need for Zebra, Pony, Eohippus, Clydesdale, and Morgan....just one young adult pair of proto-Horse.
Plenty of space. The Bible is not a science textbook, but where it deals with Science or History, its accurate.
And if you don't like that because bigotry, then you open the door for Ta-Nehism, or some other form of silliness.
