Glenn Loury, John McWhorter Discuss the Religion of Antiracism, and Its Current Pope Ta-Nehisi Coates

A very interesting Bloggingheads (and every Loury/McWhorter dialogue on Bloggingheads is interesting, and is recommended). Now, they talk about how Obama has "evolved" (in a good, embiggening way) in office, but here's the easy way to avoid that nonsense: skip to 7::06 as they begin to discuss race, and the Religion of Antiracism, generally.

McWhorter is chiefly there to put forth what I'll call the Ace of Spaces Conjecture that most of tribal signaling -- genuflecting to Ta-Nehisi Coates, for example -- is not a form of politics, but is properly understood as a form of religion. You're not supposed to ask about the parts of Ta-Nehisi Coates' claims that don't make sense, in the same way you're not really supposed to ask how Noah fit all those animals on the ark. These are not political arguments, he asserts, but "sermons."

(I've previously called such non-political "political" statements "prayers" and "devotions.")

Glenn Loury entertains that idea, but he's chiefly there to criticize the low state of racial discourse in America, focusing on the black side of that racial discourse, and Charles M. Blow in particular, whom he calls a "disgrace."

Later in the discussion, he also challenges Ta-Nehisi Coates' particular expression of Black Male Authenticity (the street bravado, noting he had a "tool" (a gun) with which to fix a "motherf**cker") as damaging and degrading.

Oh, and he rails against people like David Brooks for their racial condescending -- if you didn't read that already, for one thing, well played, but you can read it here, and see David Brooks ask, solicitously, if he's even permitted to comment upon Ta-Nehisi Coates' book.

This angers Loury, who demands, sensibly, that black people be treated just as you'd treat any other political actor. You are, in short, permitted to disagree with them or critique them without securing permission to do so beforehand.

McWhorter has meanwhile fleshed out the Ace of Spades Conjecture in an article in the Daily Beast.

McWhorter objects to the anti-intellectual, religion-like screams of "heresy" which are spat at anyone (including himself, a black man) who challenges the religion:

One is not to question, and people can be quite explicit about that. For example, in the "Conversation" about race that we are so often told we need to have, the tacit idea is that black people will express their grievances and whites will agree--again, no questions, or at least not real ones. Here and there lip service is paid to the idea that the Conversation would not be such a one-way affair, but just as typical is the praise that a piece like Reni Eddo-Lodge’s elicits, openly saying that white people who object to any black claims about racism are intolerably mistaken and barely worth engagement (Eddo-Lodge now has a contract to expand the blog post into a book). Usefully representative is a letter that The New York Times chose to print, which was elicited by David Brooks's piece on Coates’s book, in which a white person chides Brooks for deigning to even ask whether he is allowed to object to some of Coates’s claims....

As such, even Brooks has gotten the religion, critiquing Coates’s book while also making sure to say that "every conscientious American should read it." Brooks, here, is genuflecting, as America now does in general to Antiracist scripture. One is to accept that beyond a certain point--and one arrives at the point quite quickly--one is to treat logic as optional and simply have faith....

The call for people to soberly "acknowledge" their White Privilege as a self-standing, totemic act is based on the same justification as acknowledging one’s fundamental sinfulness is as a Christian. One is born marked by original sin; to be white is to be born with the stain of unearned privilege.

The proper response to original sin is to embrace the teachings of Jesus, although one will remain always a sinner nevertheless. The proper response to White Privilege is to embrace the teachings of--well, you can fill in the name or substitute others--with the understanding that you will always harbor the Privilege nevertheless. Note that many embrace the idea of inculcating white kids with their responsibility to acknowledge Privilege from as early an age as possible, in sessions starting as early as elementary school. This, in [one] sense, is Sunday school.

One objection McWhorter lodges is that there is no actual political demand here -- he feels, in many ways, this spares white people from any further need to act politically, because they've already Confessed Their Sins and hence are, as the catechism has it, now forgiven from sin.

And not just white people -- both Loury and McWhorter note the underperformance of black students in school, and want to know where are the calls for tangible action to address this in the black community. Actions beyond merely demanding that white people Confess Their Original Sins.

He doesn't dwell on that too long, but notes that's one of the things that differentiates an actual politics from a religion -- politics implies tangible political action, whereas religion can be a purely metaphysical gesture.

A very interesting dialogue -- well worth your time (as long as you skip that first 7:05).

That's not entirely accurate, though, is it? The Left has designated one nebulous group The Powerful, and twisted the adage "With great power comes great responsibility" to say that "The Powerful must surrender their strength".

It's an inevitable result of a worldview obsessed with power and dominance, as all Marxist thought ultimately is.

29 Meh.

The only privilege anyone has is the right to wake up every morning and work your ass off in school or otherwise improving yourself-

and making yourself useful to other people so you can get paid.

Everywhere around the world the middle class is the same.

Everyone knows someone from the middle class or upper class who did not do the necessary things to maintain or improve their lot in society- they took drugs, blew off school, broke the law, etc -

and they fell into the lowest class, the welfare class.

Unfortunately, a lot of Blacks( not all, of course) see the doing of the necessary things to improve your lot or at least maintain where you are in the middle class which is done pretty much the same way around the world by all races as "acting white".

And opt out of their own "privilege" to improve.

Which is weird cuz you don't see this anti-success ethic at all in sports.

Go figure.

A. To escape the wrath and curse of God, due to us for sin, God requireth of us faith in Jesus Christ, repentance unto life,[176] with the diligent use of all the outward means whereby Christ communicateth to us the benefits of redemption.

44 Anyone who's spent any real time in a real black ghetto and not just visiting knows that blacks discriminate by color and class just as whites or any other group divides itself up so as to understand who belongs with who and where.

It's the media that doesn't talk about this stuff. Either because they don't know or because they think it's aberrant and so is distracting or because it doesn't fit in with their own stereotypes of black folk.

Then too, you have to really know some people and live up next to them to find this stuff out because blacks don't like to air their dirty linen in front of white folk.

If those screeching about equality truly wished equality they would show the lesser side of black life (and I'm not talking about crime so much as day to day living and arguing) as a demonstration of blacks having the same tendencies and foibles as whites do.

Currently all we see is a distorted culture created by the black man's loss of boundaries that's lead to all the crime and nonsense these days.

The Democrats have done more damage to the whites than any David Duke could dream about.

48 The entire conversation about racism exists because there is a whole industry of race baiting that is politically and financially profitable.

Trying to convince people that racism doesn't exist or that it is less than what the media wants it to be is futile. There is too much invested into having racists having their collective boot on the necks of poor minorities.

The only way to fight this messaging is to change who the racists are.

I've outlined how this could be accomplished in the previous thread, by simply pointing out the obvious.

You can't fight gravity and racism will never go away. The best you can do is point out the true racists.

God forbid whites be spared from any manufactured guilt, when they can instead be rallied to yet another political fucking cause.

I won't be giving my pity, nor will I be giving any 'tangible political action' specifically for minorities either, as opposed to the general population who are actual, legal citizens. Donna,
I think he just meant that there are Christians who are not Roman Catholic. The original phrase "The proper response to original sin is to embrace the teachings of Jesus, although one will remain always a sinner nevertheless," while a bit ambiguous, could be taken as a shorthand version of basic Protestant theology, (see my selection from the Westminster Shorter Catechism) and to characterize it as obviously unchristian based on uniquely RC theology, as Feh appeared to be doing, could be described as "confusing Catholicism with Christianity." That is the charitable assumption, anyway...

Christian doctrine in the sense only Catholics believe this.

Posted by: pashmr at July 30, 2015 05:22 PM (3aNC4)

I believe you will find that both Luther and Calvin believed exactly
this. Many Christian denominations have wandered from it, but at the
core, all protestants once held to this particular belief.

The difference is that neither Luther nor Calvin agreed with the
Catholic Church how one goes about being forgiven for those sins, or if
they even could be forgiven.

This is precisely my point. As someone whos been on this Earth 30 years i have never held this belief and so could not have wondered from it. More to the point neither Christ, nor his Apostles held this belief (in my opinion as a non Catholic)

I'd go beyond the idea that anti-racism is a religion. It's brainwashing/programming by wanna-be minority/identity-group supremacists. It's what crit theory cultural Marxism was always intended to accomplish - a disintegration of the existing "power structure" and its replacement by cultural Marxists. The Catholic point of view is that the Bible contains everything you need, as an individual, to get to Heaven. That doesn't mean that everything we can and should know is contained therein, just that you don't need more than that.

I'm pretty sure that most denominations use a creed, and most of them know the Apostles' Creed or the Nicene Creed. Neither of those are found in the Bible, per se, but are considered foundational. That's one example and there are plenty of others. That doesn't mean the creeds are bad because they are not in the Bible, but that you don't necessarily need them to get to heaven.

I, personally, need all the help I can get.

Uhm, no. Catholics aren't really big on the proles reading scripture and they're the Church with that created most of what the Protestants consider man-made, extra-scriptural dogma and practice. Protestants are the ones who believe in scripture above all, and that "you...as an individual" are responsible for understanding interpreting it for yourself. My comment refers more to the "can't ask X" sort of thing as well as other ignorant-but-not-ill-meant statements specifically regarding Christianity. I know he's not attacking us, he just doesn't know what he's talking about in the case and so tends to choose poor examples. Posted by: Sporkatus at July 30, 2015 06:17 PM (HtLSE)

237 Apparent contradiction in scripture can also be read as a tempering consideration to black letter rules - e.g. Jesus condemns adultery and forbids remarriage but intervenes for the adulteress with "cast the first stone." Are we to literally "judge not, lest we be judged?" A wicked generation seeks a sign but shall not find it - but Jesus and the disciples perform miracles. God can level a mountain, but we shouldn't jump off mountains to test him - and a thousand other examples.

I prefer to see these apparent contradictions as "take another look at what you're doing, weight the totality rather than focusing on one black letter rule or aspect of the situation." Religion is in the spirit, not in the black letter - for all that too much "cafeteria" style belief can render your religiosity idiosyncratic or suspect. There's simply no way that we can all interpret that much ambiguous material identically, nor claim objective validity for any one interpretation.

What I wanted to say about this is that it is glib, wrong, and self-serving. The proper response to original sin is baptism, which erases the original sin and creates a new spiritual life in Christ. It is not a matter of reading a book and following a teaching. It is a matter of participating faithfully, and ever more fully, in the life of a risen person, Jesus. In reading and pondering the Bible, you are living with the Word of God. As a Catholic, you could also be living in his life through the sacraments, the Eucharist above all. This is all lost on the author of that quotation, who needs for his purpose to say that original sin *never* goes away, so you have to submit to "teachings" in penance. That is a very particular sort of understanding that verges on the cultic.

Well, not to restart the fight, but that is a specifically Catholic understanding of the role of baptism. To suggest that the ritual of baptism, in and of itself, washes away sin, is something specifically denied by the Reformers, IIRC.

It is not a matter of reading a book and following a teaching. It is a matter of participating faithfully, and ever more fully, in the life of a risen person, Jesus. 272 Faith comes by hearing/reading the word of God. One can become a Christian by reading the Bible, though I guess usually another Christian is involved. But then man builds institutions with power structures and corruption and unique codices the "cling to" ... those are religions. Much of the structure of today's religions comes straight from pagan traditions, adopted hundreds of years after Christ.

We always had to recite the Nicene Creed each week, but "trinity" is not in the Bible, and to say ... son of God = God the Son ... is as Orwellian as 2+2=5. Generally much good still comes out of the churches, though the more decentralized the power is, the better, as I see it. Each person has to study and gain their own insights/belief ... joining a religion may help or hurt.

So if I'm interpreting this correctly ... 7 + 3x = 3(x - 7)? Or 7 + 3x = 3x - 7? (Depending on what exactly is decreased by 7: x, which is then multiplied by 3, or the product of 3 with x.)

Actually, neither one makes sense. The first one reduces to 7 = -21, and the second to 7 = -7.

Posted by: Jay Guevara at July 30, 2015 07:06 PM (oKE6c)

302 It really is quite religious. White people are born with the sin if being white, but they can atone by certain works of penance and/or seeking absolution from their high priests and/or through the purchase of indulgences.

Posted by: Insomniac at July 30, 2015 07:07 PM (mx5oN)

303 The answer is 7 self-identifies as -7. Caitlyn Jenner wrote this problem, obviously.

Posted by: Jay Guevara at July 30, 2015 07:07 PM (oKE6c)

304 It is nothing like Christianity, which is univerdal and applies to all mankind, the church of Ta Nehisi Coates is saying that there is a special class of divine unstained people and a special class of the Damned.

So maybe it is like strict Calvinism... But at least they admit to being depraved

I don't have trouble with original sin, I'm Catholic after all, but the thing is that only Jesus and Mary, the latter through a very special protection, the former because he was God, were free from this.

In Christianity we are ALL damned by original sin unless Saved, but even when we are saved we are still sinners.

What is great about the Church of Ta Nehisi Coates is that while all white people are like this, black people, specifically American Black People are not. This is like declaring divinity.

If we say that some person is a special and is blameless and all others must make sure that they must never offend them and make continous penances, and any harm the blameworthy do to them is a completely different crime than when committed against other blameworthy, we are saying they are a divine being, a god. So basically these people want to declare the black race a magical race, a special people set aside and better than all other people, and they want to use force to enforce it.

Add in the special categories like "White Hispanic" where a light skin Peruvian negro is transformed, or the rage and accusations of distraction that comes up if you mention that American Indians are shot by police at a higher rate than African Americans and have worse results than any other group, while simultaneously being used to prove the evil of white folk. Along with the way there is a rank system where some minorities can use this against some but must still defer to African Americans, and you get a caste system.

Whites are the Dalits, untouchables, and Affrican Americans are the Brahmins, but we are still waiting to find out where everyone else fits in. Hispanics are pretty high up there, maybe just below Muslim Americans, but like them they can lose caste. Ayaan Hirsi Ali may be a very black person and a muslim, but by speaking against the system she lost caste and became untouchable, but not a Dalit. If she repented she could be cleansed through ritual and returned to her natural state of grace where she would have authority over all non blacks. But a white hispanic, which can be any hispanic immediately becomes a Dalit, a permanent untouchable, when they transgress, and that transgression can be as simple as voting for a Republican or as complex as being slowly cast out over a long time by exhibiting white behavior regularly. This suggests they are Vaisya, the second lowest of the specific cases, but still used as a weapon against the Dalits. Asians are clearly Shudras, almost untouchables but some carefully observed and trained may make useful enforcers.

As someone with American Indians in my family, the real kind living in trailers on reservations in the middle of the desert making jewelry and getting drunk and/or joining the army, but only if they have a chance of getting killed, I am very curious where people like my cousins will end up. I suspect it will still be at the bottom. They don't have the temperment for it and even the ones who go to Dartmouth and become activists always manage to piss off black people.

This isn't a religion for anyone who wants to be left alone.

I do suspect though

331 The Kurdish militias (YPG, PKK) have been Washington's most effective weapon in the fight against ISIS in Iraq and Syria. But the Obama administration has sold out the Kurds in order to strengthen ties with Turkey and gain access to Turkey's Incirlik Air Base. The agreement to switch sides was made in phone call between President Obama and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan less than 48 hours after a terrorist incident in the Turkish town of Suruc killed 32 people and wounded more than 100 others.

The bombing provided Obama with the cover he needed to throw the Kurds under the bus, cave in to Turkey's demands, and look the other way while Turkish bombers and tanks pounded Kurdish positions in Syria and Iraq. The media has characterized this shocking reversal of US policy as a "game-changer" that will improve US prospects for victory over ISIS. But what the about-face really shows is Washington's inability to conduct a principled foreign policy as well as Obama's eagerness to betray a trusted friend and ally if he sees some advantage in doing so.

Turkish President Erdogan has launched a war against the Kurds; that is what's really happening in Syria at present. The media's view of events -- that Turkey has joined the fight against ISIS -- is mostly spin and propaganda. The fact that the Kurds had been gaining ground against ISIS in areas along the Turkish border, worried political leaders in Ankara that an independent Kurdish state could be emerging. Determined to stop that possibility, they decided to use the bombing in Suruc as an excuse to round up more than 1,000 of Erdogans political enemies (only a small percentage of who are connected to ISIS) while bombing the holy hell out of Kurdish positions in Syria and Iraq. All the while, the media has been portraying this ruthless assault on a de facto US ally, as a war on ISIS. It is not a war on ISIS. It is the manipulation of a terrorist attack to advance the belligerent geopolitical agenda of Turkish and US elites.

It is not the task of schools to turn children into neurotic, uninformed SJWs. Instead, schools are -- or should be -- tasked with making it possible for each child to be a productive part of society who can deal with other humans in society.

My list of people who may perhaps need to be dispensed with if our country and society are not to collapse in a smoldering heap grows longer every day. There are teachers, school administrators and a lot of government drones who "oversee" education on that list.

_______________________

There's a dispute going on in the twitter-verse right now over some equally bad math. Somebody tweeted that the $360,000,000 spent to introduce Obamacare would have been better spent just giving each American $1 million.

So then a bunch of people point out that that doesn't make sense, because there are more than 300,000,000 Americans.

But in all the arguments about the original tweet's faulty math, what nobody seems to realize is that the federal Obamacare website, all by itself, cost taxpayers over a BILLION dollars (and counting), and most of the states' websites each cost taxpayers many millions more just to construct. Plus if you add in all the added premiums and the federal O-Care subsidies -- which are costing billions of tax dollars every year -- the entire O-Care scheme will end up costing taxpayers TRILLIONS of dollars -- so the original tweet was more right than wrong (even if the math was bad).

Would it have to be like Jurassic Park, or could it be like the Wild Animal Sanctuary her in CO that rescues predators and gives them room to roam. Visiting is quite an experience because you have to go immediately from your car (near bear enclosure double fences) to the center. It is NOT a zoo; it's for the animals, visitors are just allowed in order to raise $$$. So the animals are as wild as they could possibly be in captivity.

You should check it out to get an idea of how these nature-lovers think. The author lays out how after it became illegal to hunt mountain lions, people settled in their habitat, and the nature-loving culture kicked in, these cats altered behavior that had been documented for hundreds of years and began hunting in broad daylight. And still, these people are charmed by a beasty sunning itself on their back porch because it's "nature". Uh, no, it's a predator asserting its dominance in the face of your weakness.

The way I understand, the IRS yes, but also the "Call Centers" - there is one about 8 miles from my locale where an inordinate amount of "employees" with Obama/Biden 2012 bumper stickers reside. ( and will not do interviews with the press )
Also, by eventually adding an unknown quantity of formerly uninsured people, the health care industry here has been expanding steadily. The cost will go up, partly to pay for the additional workforce. Certainly not great paying jobs - that's why the progs will try to push the minimum wage up.

Not to mention the tax prep help that businesses will incur.

Like they said "if you think health care is expensive now...wait until it's free".

This Obamacare Call center is in Wentzville MO.

This is from STLToday - there's a lot more of these scattered around

"Serco won the federal contract in July and selected Wentzville as one of three sites to carry it out. The others are in Arkansas and Kentucky.

A benefits and compensation manager with Serco told the Post-Dispatch in August that St. Louis was picked because of its growth potential and high number of college graduates.

The company moved operations to the old US Fidelis call center in Wentzville that month. In September, thousands of hopefuls showed up for job interviews at the center. Serco hired 790 people at a pay rate between $14 and $27 an hour with health insurance and a 401(k). According to CMS, the center now has 660 employees."

I know of a guy whose *first* name is Wendt who graduated from Annapolis in the same class as McCain. Didn't think much of him.

I only know about him though because his wife is a dedicated knitter even though she had a serious stroke a number of years ago. She helped run the Olympic torch (with help, I'd guess) less than a year after the stroke but has had to relearn how to knit and use a wrist brace to hold the left needle. Her dad was killed in WW2. Both he and her stepdad were Navy guys (and I think officers) so it's probably no wonder she married an Annapolis grad.

576 This relates to another current piece of sporting news. Tim Tebow is trying to play football again, and the media is reporting that he is "polarizing", apparently due to the fact that he is openly Christian.

Most black NFL players are openly Christian and make physical signs on the field often about their religion, including group prayers on their knees with heads bowed.

We never hear a negative word about that from the press. Apparently it's only polarizing when a white person is openly religious.

577 "Brooks, here, is genuflecting, as America now does in general to Antiracist scripture."

If antiracism is a religion, then accusations of racism are the religious equivalent to accusations of, basically, Satanism.

If anyone's willing to consider this somewhat seriously, it's fun to go read something like Gabe's Cuck Part Deux article and replace all mentions of words like racism with appropriate references from The Crucible about Goody Chastity practicing witchcraft to see how or if it changes the tone. Not all of it. Some arguments/comments fit the sound of someone denouncing heretics better than others. Try it and see.

Ace sounds like he's treading dangerously close to the crypto-Quaker thesis. That shit will get you kicked out of tech conferences.

------

I stopped following television sports talk around 2007 or so. Besides the politics getting injected everywhere, it finally became apparent to me the people brought forward as experts weren't all that bright. You're not getting any nuanced or deeply thought opinions. You're getting all "hot takes" all the time.

Started with Auburn's undefeated season in 2004. USC and Oklahoma were undefeated too, and this was before "If it ain't SEC, it ain't shit" stuff started the way it is now. It was just universally accepted that Auburn was not at the same caliber, and I could not understand why. They were damn good too.

Then, a few years later, I noticed guys like Billy Packer and Digger Phelps were pissed off about schools like George Mason (Final Four from an 11 seed) and Bradley (Sweet 16 from a 13 seed) making it in the tournament instead of whoever finished 8th or 9th from the Big 10 or ACC.

Then the heat the Packers took for casting their lot with Aaron Rodgers. ESPN talking heads just could not believe that this was even a tough call for Green Bay.

It finally clicked. Why the hell do I watch this shit? So, I don't anymore. If there is a game I want to watch on ESPN, I'll watch it, but if I want opinion, I know where I can find it online.

Ford sold their stake in 2008.

Later became Datson, then Datsun. The name is being used in some markets like India.

Toyota
Last name of founder. Means 'Bountiful Field'.

Honda
Ditto. Means 'Main/Trunk Field'.

Per Wiki, it now produces Mustangs and Fusions. Last MX-6 was built there in 1997. Last Mazda 6 in '12.

Who the hell comes up with these names??

Savvy salesmen. The same ones who come up with company names like "Agilent," "Exelis," and "Spherion."

They make a ton of money. Says a lot about modern-day corporate executives.

Now, this is a long way back, but, wasn't Datsun sorta the everyday, working man's brand of the two?

Ex-GF's brother would drag a pontoon boat with a 1980s Datsun super cab 4x4 pickup and it did okay.

Posted by: RWC - Team BOHICA at July 30, 2015 11:18 PM (XAFOu)

665 "Seven increased by the product of three and a value x is the same as the product of 3 and a value x decreased by seven."

As others have noted, this makes no sense. However, if the last phrase was "the product of 3 and a value of seven decreased by x."

then the equation can be written:
7 + (3*x) = 3*(7-x)
7 + (3*x) = 21 - 3x
6x = 14
x = 14/6

which is true.

I think we've moved on to harrumphing about commenters mentioning J@red T@yl0r's name in here. The guy who grew up in Japan and runs a website that was 20 years ahead of its time, back in the 1990s.

It is very important for certain (other) commenters that they not be seen as a problem. Otherwise Gabe might say something mean.

670 To SMFH.

Boulder Terlit Hobo interpreted my statement correctly. Most of my native relatives don't live on reservations, but some do and they are really at the bottom of the barrel. They face disrinination and almost perpetual poverty unless they give up their traditions, and yet they are willing to face the poverty because of those traditions. But instead of being treated as Amish who are on terrible land they face all orts of weird and very specific persecutions especially from Federal law enforcement. For example at the tribal leadership's discretion anyone can be turned over to the Federal Prosecutor for any crime. Nothing like sending a 15 year old a thousand miles away for three years for plinking road signs and possession to a juvenile facility that has absolutely no educational programs or any rehabilitation. All because his grandpa pissed off some tribal official by noticing his embezzlement.

Back when Obamacare was still a dark cloud on the horizon I tried to tell people about the horror that is the Indian Health Service which is by Treaty law supposed to provide Reservation Indians with health care. Even the most lefty academic types assured me that of course ACA would be better than the IHS, though not as good as single payer...

When I asked them if they thoight the Health service should be fixed first the response was that with Obamacare it would be uneccesary, so no need to fix it...

Btw Reservation indians are barred from buy___ on the exchange because they are already insured by the IHS

671 To buckeye abroad.

I was not saying I was persecuted by TNC's dream of a caste system based religion, i doubt it will come to pass outside of Academia and the land of the concerned, and theredays are numbered because the whole thing is so repellant not just to human dignity but economic and technological development . It is also based on taking the productive part of society along with an overwhelming majority of the nation's population and branding them as inherently flawed and evil and telling them to submit to a self appointed priesthood that doesn't even offer salvation. That sort of thing has limited attractions, and while I work in an academic setting it is at an agricultural and engineering institution that has a 60-70% male freshman class, offers no studies major other "child & family" which used to be home ec, and is in a state that considers mormons a vector of liberalism. We do have apretty good American Indian program, but it is in the anthropology department, and it isn't a major.

My point is that I was describing the logic of this system of belief and not saying I believed in it.

As my Dad who was teaching in Berkeley in 1968 said, all things pass, of course he was later stripped of his department chair at another school for refusing to eliminate the requirement that graduate students in english take classes in old English and read Chaucer, but he was still right, it just may take more than a human lifetime. After all he saw the Soviet Union fall and went from worrying bout actual communists calling for a revolutio of the striking blue collar masses, especially in the mines and rural areas to be joined by industrial workers to usher in a new glorious age where ono river would remain undammmed, to the rise of identity politics where the blue collar masses were declared the enemy of all that was good and decent. And industrial progress was considered a crime.

Sure the level of idiocy is constant but the form constantly changes.

In a dozen years Ta Nehisi Coates will be an aging bloviator, and in fisty he will be less remembered than Nornan Thomas.

That paragraph perfectly encapsulates why that site is important.

673 Noah's Ark works.
1. Its freaking huge. Not at all like the thing that floated in your bathtub when you were four.8b
2. Average size of an animal is a chicken.
3. There are only 20,000 Kinds.
You don't need Wolf, Dachsund, Doberman, Coyote, Fox...you just need two young adult wolves. Same with the Big Cats, and a ton of other 'species' which are often only different because of slightly different feathers. Same with the Horse Kind...no need for Zebra, Pony, Eohippus, Clydesdale, and Morgan....just one young adult pair of proto-Horse.

Plenty of space. The Bible is not a science textbook, but where it deals with Science or History, its accurate.

And if you don't like that because bigotry, then you open the door for Ta-Nehism, or some other form of silliness.

Posted by: Eric Ashley at July 31, 2015 02:49 AM (LKVOg)

674 Um... actually it's totally valid to ask how Noah got all the animals on the ark. Feel free to ask Ken Ham. Real Christianity does not require you to check your brain at the door.
