Jerry Seinfeld: Network TV Is Dead

He says that if he were just starting his show now, he would go with an internet-centered exhibitor rather than a network.

The 55-year-old comedian also explained why the man behind NBC's iconic Seinfeld would choose the internet over the small screen. "TV is over," is his answer.

"When you get to a certain point in the business, what a man is looking for in a network is the same as in his underwear. A little bit of support and a little bit of freedom," he said according to a transcript via Tubefilter. "That's exactly what Crackle offered… There's nothing different about what we're doing than what anyone else is doing on any media anywhere. TV networks are worried that you’ll figure out TV is over, and there's nothing special about it."

He's still in favor of TV shows (as he's peddling one), and wasting your time watching them, but I think he's right that the delivery mechanism of tv stations and networks and schedules is dead -- or at least dying.

TV makes you stupid. Makes you careless and makes you think and do things a sane person wouldn't.

66 The company I work for, CoachesAid.com, does live streaming broadcasts of amateur sports events. To watch a particular game, say your kid's basketball team, you log on and pay about ten bucks (prices vary a bit) and you can watch while it's happening and then a couple days later you'll be able to see it with added edits/cuts/highlights. For 30 bucks, you get that and a dvd mailed to your house. I have zero involvement in sales or production, but we get a few hundred subscribers for "big" high school games, a few thousand worldwide for stuff like the Cricket match I did last weekend. It's a good model, and the company is expanding all over.

During the days of my childhood, you had 3 networks, which meant 3 tv shows at a time to choose from. And, it wasn't actually free, it was paid for by the sponsors. Now we have everything from mass market sitcoms, to provocative, harsh shows on AMC, to streaming '50's film noir, to reality show crap, to endless Kardashian idiocy. In the end the choices are good.

And if you want to save money you can do like my brother did. Use an antenna for what comes over the airwaves, and set a used computer near your tv just for streaming. He doesn't even pay for netflix.

I've got to believe it's over-the-air broadcasting. Then what, for guys like me?

Looks like either: 1) get cable, a loathsome proposition, or 2) Sateliite TV/internet, not much better than (1), or 3) live with copper DSL, which gags on a lot of "live" streaming right now.

Doesn't look so good for me I guess...

There's a cartoon called Tom The Dancing Bug. Back in 1995, I think, the artist did a one-page layout called "Flowers For Trinitron," following what happened to a fellow when his TV went on the blink. My google-fu isn't good enough to bring up a link, but perhaps a smarter moron could do it.

Too bad. Well, the story in a nutshell.

A man keeps a diary. In a childlike scrawl, he notes that his TV went on the blink.

As the days go by, he begins to read books, exercise, go on dates and even begin his own novel (his handwriting, meanwhile, getting more fluid and adult), realizing that television has robbed him of everything wonderful.

He's about to throw the TV out the window when it suddenly sputters back to life.

In the final panel, he's watching TV again. In a childlike scrawl, his diary reads, "Big excitement! On Home Improvement, Al was leaving for a job in another city, but then he didn't."

The Internal Revenue Service detailed its claim in documents filed Wednesday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Dallas. It seeks to recover more than $2 billion in unpaid income taxes, interest and penalties from Sam Wyly and more than $1.2 billion from the estate of his brother, Charles Wyly.

Sterling Software was an American software company founded in Dallas, Texas in 1981 by Sterling Williams and brothers Sam and Charles Wyly. The company was acquired by Computer Associates International in 2000 in a stock-for-stock transaction worth $3.3 billion. Computer Associates sold Sterling Software's Federal Systems Group to Northrop Grumman in 2000.

I used to use my 42 inch TV as a monitor, but the resolution isn't clear enough (for me) to read comfortably on it for any amount of time.

So I keep the TV hardwired to the computer, but I use dual 27"s for my daily work and whatnot. That way I can throw videos on the TV (which is across the room) and still work on my dual monitors (my work software kind of requires 2 monitors to work efficiently).

As for 4K? I'm not there yet. Like you, waiting for the new standard to standardize, and I'm also waiting for the price to drop on the TVs.

I don't spend a ton of time watching TV shows and rarely ever watch movies. So it's not a priority to me.

What kills me...absolutely kills me, are the number of people who go to the gym and then spend 95% of their gym time tappity-tapping on their handheld devices.

I mean, they're PAYING for that gym membership. They can tappity-tap on their own time.

Every damn flat machine in the gym has to turn into a cyber-café. But I live in an apartment so I kind of have to go to the gym. I go in the morning now, when it's all working folks who are serious about getting their workouts in and getting to work.

In the evenings, between the idiots glued to their iWhatevers while sitting on (not USING) machines, and the inner-city yoots who take over the basketball courts, I can't deal.

The TV I'd most likely try it out on would be my bedroom TV. Probably 50 feet away from my AC router.

AC on 5 GHz works fine my phones, tablets, and laptops in my bed room, but my Chromecast on 2.4Ghz (which theoretically should get better range than the 5 Ghz band) is very iffy. Which seems stupid to me, but the device is so small I guess they had to cut back on antennae size.

189 "Television is dead".

Phrases like that fall into the same category as the word "amnesty". It's totally meaningless with a definition.

Of course, "I Love Lucy" network shows in a commercial laden format are dead (or dying fast). However, as far as video entertainment viewed on cable connected televisions, now is a golden age of innovation and excellence.

The quantity and quality of what someone has available to them today is exceptional. Anyone without access to the wide variety of entertainment and informational programming today would be a sorely uniformed recluse who would have trouble functioning in society.

Rejoice in being alive at this point in history.

190 TV is not going away any time soon. But cable will fall under increasing pressure from web/wireless based alternatives. Cable had distribution, but that advantage is no more.
What some cable channels have the ability to bring an audience that will be far harder to build on you tube and the web alternatives. The funding required to build a show is still considerable so that still points to the need for a corporate sponsor regardless if it's Amazon, Netflix, Fox or Dinsey/ABC.

It could also be the transmit capabilities of your wireless network card in the computer or device.

And what is surrounding it... your 5 GHZ signal can 'bounce' off of things your 2.4 may not...

Because it takes a full communication loop for the handshaking needed for networking to function...

I had a client who had this same problem... finally got them a USB Network card (which should have ended up being slower)... but it allowed us to get a USB cable and get a direct line of site to her router..

MUCH better performance...

I see a lot of young people with zero functional knowledge of world history and culture. They've never read classics. They've never heard a live piece of symphonic music. 256 Content copyright.

There was a time when you could buy software that would rip and burn DVDs, and the DVD content you had purchased was, in fact, yours. But Hollywood, and the Federal Government extended copyright 'protection' and unilaterally declared that you, as a consumer do not 'own' content. You purchase a license to view said content under certain restrictions as decided by Hollywood and the Feds.

After the new laws, Microsoft set the kill bit on some component parts of software you had already purchased, and installed back in the day when it was legal, rendering your license to use software to copy DVD content invalid.

257 YouTube to the rescue...

Just today, I found a YouTube video that explained what is wrong with my Holder sidewalk tractor. I've had this thing into two diesel shops and no one could figure out why it wouldn't start.

Apparently, glow plugs are wired in series. That means that if the connection between cylinder 1 and 2 is hosed, cylinder 3 and 4 will not get power. The engine will crank and sound like it wants to start, but it just won't fire.

Some guy with a Bobcat (same 48HP Kubota turbo diesel) went step by step and showed how to check and change them out.

Fuck.

This is truly a world of wonders.

We recently got SlingTV and she threw a fit when the show she wanted to watch couldn't appear on her whim like Netflix. So if TV wasn't over for us older folks, it certainly will have no place in the rising generation.

302 "When I was a wee Moron, no neighborhood tree went unclimbed. No creek went unexplored. No dirt clod went unthrown. No small critter went unmolested. Damn, that was fun."

You just described my boyhood.

Plus, Playboy in the treehouse, 60' up.

303 Ace,

It could be far worse than you suggest.

If I were one of the studios why should I even bother with the cable providers anymore?? I have to identify a content line up with them. Then I have to negotiate a price. If we get to loggerheads (yeah I am talking about you TimeWarner...), I might have my brand damaged and blocked. Far better to come out with a direct package of my own like Hulu or Crackle. Mr/Mrs consumer, you can have access to the entire MGM catalog except for the current year for $5/mo. For $10/mo we will even include any release older than 60 days.

* No more dealing with a program manager.
* Reduced risk on my income streams. (4 majors vs millions of individual viewers.)
* More income that I am doing now.

Once the studios recognize this, TV is REALLY dead.

304 As TV continues to go the way of the Dodo Bird, I am continually struck by a seemingly throwaway line in one of my favorite Star Trek Next Gen TV episodes where the Enterprise finds space pods containing a 20th century housewife, country music singer and a business tycoon, frozen at death to maybe be revived later etc.

One scene has the country music singer asking Cmdr Data if there was anything on the "boob tube" to watch aboard the 24th century ship.

Data answered "ah...television. that particular form of entertainment did not last beyond the early 21st century."

305 I've got a pen. And I've got a phone. And a VHS player. Be kind, rewind.
