It's Time for Regime Change in Christmastown

The latest edition of my pop-culture podcast with Mickey White goes up today. I discuss a Christmas television special that our family watches every year - and I was unnerved to see that James Lileks also wrote about the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Christmas special as well. Luckily, the two of us headed in different directions in our assessment. He wonders how today's Left would re-edit it, while I lament that for all of the warm feelings it stirs . . . this children's classic makes almost no sense.First, I get that this is a parable about tolerance of those who are different, and appreciating "misfits" who "don't fit in." Perhaps that was a particularly powerful message in 1964. But the story's need for an intolerant society to depict means that a lot of previously-beloved characters associated with Christmas get turned into absolute quasi-fascistic villains.
Donner, Rudolph's dad, is one of the worst. He's horrified by his son's shiny nose, literally from the moment of his birth. Everyone just accepts that because of the shiny nose, Rudolph will never be able to pull the sleigh. Nobody ever explains why. They treat this as some sort of horrible genetic mutation. In the entire story, no one in Christmastown other than Clarice and Rudolph's mother - who never even gets a name! - can tolerate it. Everyone else instantly reacts with shock, horror, and disgust.
Santa comes across as even worse. He's a jerk who doesn't care about the elves' musical number. The first sign of snow - in the North Pole, where he really shouldn't be that shocked - and he's ready to cancel Christmas. He's got one job!
Finally, when Rudolph is exposed at the reindeer games, Santa tells Donner, Rudolph's dad, he should be ashamed of himself. For what? His son's nose? A birth defect? For polluting the gene pool? Is this Nazi Christmastown?

Honestly, tonight I watched Charlie Brown's Christmas and as I watched it , reminiscing about how many decades ago, when I was 8 or 9, I absolutely loved it. It put my little kid brain in overdrive thinking about how Christmas was near.
And what was I thinking tonight as I watched with rapt attention? The fact that Linus was quoting Bible scripture on a children's television program being broadcast to the masses and how I felt I should be looking about to see who might be offended. That at the end, the Peanuts gang sang , "Hark, the Herald Angel's Sing", a song that would be banned if contemplated being sung in December at a school in America today, or if by chance, sung in a public school , would result in the teacher/choir director being put on administrative leave and the school principal would be sending letters of apologies to parents.
And watching it with that realization made me profoundly sad for my country and for it's youth.

It's not JUST that. Fuck you can buy a decent care for $5K which even the PhD Starbucks barista can afford. There's been a cultural shift in this country where the yuutes don't view owning a car the same way previous generations did.
I don't think it's a good thing or a bad thing, it just is.
And if the argument is well, then the economy will suffer...not really. Instead of spending $400 a month on a car payment they'll spend that $400 somewhere else.

Visited with a friend today who was excitedly telling me about her daughter's college search. Daughter is looking for scholarships, etc. as she has the grades for it, but regardless, all her of choices in schools are averaging $25,000-$40,000 a year. When I asked friend what said offspring wishes to major in, I was told she was undecided......but parents are thrilled she is going to go spend that kind of money when she doesn't have a clue what she wants to do in life.

Don't forget that there has been an extensive drought thru cattle country for the past three years, and the upper midwest and cental plains were hit with cattle killing snowstorms early last year. Cattle numbers are way down as a result.
Feeder calves in my area are up from $25 a piece for newborns to $250.

That stuff is expensive and crap.
Just plain old tar paper--works better and lasts longer. I've uncovered it on homes built 120 years ago and underneath the wood looks like it was just milled.
Tyvek leaks, rips, and lets in a ton of water.

eBooks are great, but the books my wife likes will not translate to that medium (and I am eternally grateful for that). There is simply no way to take a 10.5" x 14" art book and condense it down for an iPad or Kindle. The same thing applies to high-end fashion and fashion history books too, thank heavens. As a result, I have a long list of potential gift items stretching far into the future. It's almost ironic, but they are so expensive that she can't possibly expect me to buy them all for her in one year. Yay?

Friend in high school was Jewish and loved to come to my home to see the Christmas tree, ornaments, etc. She in turn, taught me to sing "I have a little dradle" and explained about the chocolate coins, etc.
She had a great aunt who had this funny tattoo on her wrist. As a teenager, I couldn't imagine any old lady with a tattoo, so I finally asked my friend about it.
It was a concentration camp tattoo. Her great aunt had survived one of the camps. In my mind's eye, I can still see that tattoo clearly and to this day , it gives me chills.
May all my Jewish friends be well as they begin to celebrate Hanukkah tonight.

You're making a false assumption that they don't want cars because they can't afford them. They just don't want cars. I Same with buying houses. Millennial aren't getting married or having kids. A single person with no kids doesn't need a house. And let's face it, real estate isn't exactly the safe investment it once used to be. Real estate is expensive as fuck, it costs a lot to maintain, it's hard to sell if you want to move. Why bother with all of that when instead you can rent a 1 bedroom apartment?

Plus, easier to share cars amongst a household when a lot of the jobs out there right now are part time or under 30 hours/week.
Of course the economy has something to do with this, but a lot of the articles about "Why aren't the Millenials Doing X, Y, or Z?" tend to leave that detail out. I wonder why that is?
If Bush was president, these articles would read "Millennials unable to buy houses or cars due to failed Republican economics."
Also keep in mind that the lack of 20 and 30 somethings buying houses now will have a long term effect on the economy, another thing conveniently left out of most of these articles.
If only there was some way to create a job creation friendly economy!

Putting food crops in your gas tank in the form of ethanol is also reducing the service life of your car engine.
Australia had a massive grain surplus at one point in the Nineties and mandated 20% ethanol minimums in retail gasoline. What followed were a spate of blown motors, and denied warranty claims (read that fine print, folks).
They backed off on that, but the green lobby and the farm lobby are teaming up to try to push the same level of ethanol as a federal mandate here in the States.
Because fanatic ideology and craven greed.
Oh! I mean, because doe-eyed children and The Erf.
And of course Government Motors are also pretty happy when the other sectors of government force ordinary consumers to buy new cars more often.

Of course, children from the serf class must be held to tougher dietary standards. They're just animals, really. Barely sentient. Without cultured superiors to look out for them, what would they amount to?

Pearson Education also left a big building behind when they left my town. No one's coming in to fill it. The mayor wanted to unilaterally re-zone the land to allow apartments and retail stores to go up. It was a big political issue here and it was put on the ballot. The mayor lost.
It seems in NJ we're chasing the jobs away but perpetually putting up housing. Who's gonna live in these apartments when there are no jobs nearby?

He's had terrible stomach and digestive problems for years. Imagine a man who is 6 ft. tall and weighs 110 lbs. Yeah, he looks like a concentration camp survivor. He's basically starving to death - and needs surgery but can't get it because he's too skinny and would probably die on the table. But he can't gain weight - he can manage maybe a bowl of soup and a cookie every day.
63 years old and he looks like he's 75. And he's a great guy who has been so generous to everyone in our family, including me. It's breaking my heart. My sister told me she gets in her car and just drives around some evenings because she can't bear to be at home.

I've been busy taking care of my little old lady pup, yorkie, 10 1/2 years old, her hips went out and she had to have surgery on her right one, it was worse than the left, uggg...brutal. $3700 smackaroos. The surgery was called FHO, it seems pretty barbaric, but the doc said it seems to have good results especially in little dogs.
It's exhausting, she's like a newborn, I have to carry her everywhere and she cries when her morphine wears off. Bad thing is her other hip is screwed up too, not sure about doing a second surgery.
So that's my sob story for tonight, not to mention I didn't even finish my damn wine, decided I wanted a vanilla latte instead, something must be seriously wrong with me

I trawl the 'bargain' meat bin at our local store, but it's mostly more expensive cuts that haven't sold. I'll buy up the 'grass-fed' beef nonsense for stews because it's a bit cheaper than the regular chuck most of the time. I still have to hack off a 1/2 lbs of fat cap. Assholes don't trim the meat anymore.
I'll snag a few steaks for freezing as well. ...
In an more unenlightened era, this kind of shit would end with a lot of used up rope and lampposts.

Has everyone here been following the Sony Pictures hacking story, supposedly based on some shadowy group (maybe the Norks, maybe not) that's upset over the upcoming anti-NK Franco-Rogen comedy The Interview?
Anyway, Sony's actually now announcing that they'll still release the film... but that if *individual theater owners or chains* who've booked it don't want to show it out of fear of some sort of real or cyber terrorism happening to them, they will respect that.

That went down for a while too, I think out of respect for it's soon to be departed deskmate. But as of now, the modem is up and working on the wi-fi to the laptop and on the cat5 to the old desktop.

The urban farmer's markets I've been to have been unimpressive.
The only ones I really trust are the ones I've been going to forever- in July and August, when you're driving in the country and see a sign advertising "fresh corn." The corn on the cob bought directly from the farmers with stands right on their farms has always beaten anything I've found in the grocery store - and it's cheaper too.

Don't know if anyone helped you yet, but make sure you install the ethernet driver. It should be with the driver package that comes with the motherboard.
I've built my last several non-laptop computers and a few for family. Pretty high end performance for lower middle end prices, worth it if you can figure it out.

"On the evening of Monday, December 15, 2014 UCPD received a report of a cell phone robbery and several cell phone thefts.
At 6:40 p.m. a female student was on the Grinnell Pathway when she was approached from behind by a black male suspect who grabbed her cell phone and ran off. At 6:23 p.m. a non-affiliated male was walking near the West Crescent when he was approached by three black male juveniles who robbed him of his cell phone. The suspects, all in hooded sweatshirts, fled the scene towards Center & Oxford. A female student was walking through Sproul Plaza at approximately 6:36 p.m. talking on her cell phone when a male suspect, ethnicity unknown, snatched her phone out of her hand. Finally, at 6:42 p.m. a female student was in front of the Moffitt Library Cafe texting on her phone. A male suspect approached her and grabbed her phone. The suspect fled the scene running westbound towards the Eucalyptus Grove. UCPD officers on patrol saw the victim chasing the suspect. The officers intervened and arrested the suspect.
The suspect arrested is:
A Black male, 17 years of age, 6'0" in height, with a medium build, wearing a dark knit hat, gray jacket and gray pants. It is unknown whether this suspect was involved in the other incidents.

First off, if you don't know your wife's size and what colors she looks good in, start paying attention, you're doing it wrong.
Second, if you're really unsure, go with Nordstrom's. They will give you cash for any item, with or without a receipt. So, it's like giving cash or a gift card, but you actually put some thought into it, so you get Husband Points for that. 2X multiplier if she likes it.

Chavez I'm very concerned. Hot teams go places in the playoffs. Seattle hot, Green Bay, not. Rogers was awful the other day. Bills defense was ok. Special teams, blocked kicks over the past few weeks, return game disaster.

The teenagers like makeup, jewelry, scarves, perfume and gift cards. I got each of them a fancy lipstick, good perfume, Juicy Couture charm bracelets and a Juicy Couture handbag, which are so ghetto, but so cute, and tucked a Sephora gift card in the handbags for them to find. One of them got a fancy pair of floral cowgirl boots instead of a handbag.
My nephews are all getting knives, video game consoles and good boots, regardless of their age, except the 3 year old. Cuz he's obviously too young for boots and video games.

The weirdest roll of the genetic dice I have ever seen:
My former boss,a white woman of Greek ancestry, married a black guy. They had two kids, who look like, well, they have the same skin tone as Obama. The eldest, (a nice guy), married a white woman. After having 2 kids together, who both look black, he found out she was cheating on him with a white guy and they broke up. Nine months later, she gave birth to a blond, blue-eyed, ivory-skinned baby. He didn't believe it was his kid, he was sure it had to be the child of his wife's white lover. The genetics were tested. It is his kid. Blond hair and blue eyes are recessive - but that doesn't mean they can't suddenly pop up and assert themselves if they are in the gene pool.
It's an odd situation. The child is really more white than black, but has a father who, like Obama, looks more black than white and "black" full siblings,well, life will be interesting for the kid. He's going to have a tough row to hoe.

I fucking hated BCR. But, it was mostly the image thing. I cut them a fair bit of slack these days and give credit where it's due. Their stuff was bubblegum, but they knew how to write catchy tunes. I don't blame your nostalgia one bit. It was the 70's. Anything from the 70's sounds like fucking gold compared to todays shit. BCR I can remember their stuff. I can't think of anything that OD has done that I haven't forgetten 10 seconds after hearing it. You keep rocking on to BCR and forget what anyone thinks. Wave that tartan scarf, girl!

I definitely knew who they were. I started playing Black Sabbath when I was around 12, so I was pretty much protected against silly music like BCR. None of that shit could compete with Iron Man.
It was years later I came across the unopened BCR album while cleaning the basement, and I was already playing in metal bands by then. A friend who was over saw the album and asked what the hell I was going to do with it. I said were gonna send it to hell. lol

Does that unit have a speaker, or is it earbuds-only. I am not a fan of earbuds. My big problem with radio is that there is getting to be diddly-squat worth listening to on local AM or FM stations. And I really love restoring antique radios, too. Pity I can't stand to listen to them for too long.

Up until November 2013 we had an awesome 36" JVC unit, picture in picture, stereo. Was going to keep it til it died, MIL gave us money for a smart tv. The JVC is now in the bedroom. Treat yourself Chi

years old, her hips went out and she had to have surgery on her right
one, it was worse than the left, uggg...brutal. $3700 smackaroos. The
surgery was called FHO, it seems pretty barbaric, but the doc said it
seems to have good results especially in little dogs.
It's exhausting, she's like a newborn, I have to carry her
everywhere and she cries when her morphine wears off. Bad thing is her
other hip is screwed up too, not sure about doing a second surgery.
Femoral head osteotomy- my golden had this at 18 months ( she is 6 now) due to undiagnosed fracture until the bone was necrotic. Great results- she does look a bit funny at full gallop but otherwise no downside.Other choice was s hip replacement! I'm saving that one for me.

Sorry to hear that. I've been there myself, with dogs that have had two knee surgeries, one hip surgery and two untreatable spinal conditions. Fortunately not all at once. The dogs who required surgery all recovered and lived long lives, and the two with spinal conditions required help when moving around, but seemed to adapt well to their new conditions. Your dog seems to fit in category 1, so she's probably got 6-10 years to go. Did they give her a pain patch in addition to the tramadol/morphine?

Holy shit, Mike. One Christmas, I got the big brother to that kit, a Remco transistor radio. It was a crystal set with one stage of transistor audio amplification, which meant it was a little louder in the headphone. It also had a speaker and a little carbon-button mike so you could make PA announcements.

Last year, the local sheriff was up for re-election, she was a black Republican. I happened to be at a meeting that included mostly lefties, all white. Their discussion centered on how could a woman, especially a woman of color, be a Republican.
These were the typical liberals that live the life of comfort types. They are most definitely in their minds down with the struggle.
Same thing with some kids I played sports with growing up. They ended up going off to THE elite boarding schools for high school, and they are all now down with the struggle.

True, but the Germans still managed to kill about 40 million people from Winter of 1941 until they were finally defeated. So every day "early" that we helped end it meant a lot of lives were saved. Imagine if the Western Front had never been opened, and we'd not sacrificed the 8th AF over Germany the way we did. Another 20 million Russians and Eastern Europeans probably would have died. Not to mention the remaining Jews of Europe.

I have to say though that the Jews and the Gypsies were the only two groups who were killed just because of who they were. You didn't have to resist the Nazis, you could have been baptized, whatever - they didn't care.
The Polish Catholics were slightly higher on the subhuman scale - the Nazis wiped out the intelligentsia and they sent Poles to slave labor camps and concentration camps for extremely trivial reasons - but it wasn't quite the automatic death sentence that being Jewish was.

Thanks for all the computer advice, but think I'm going to throw in the towel for now. Having an issue trying to update the network driver too. Running out of time to haxOr this close to Christmas.
Know that the USB ports are working, so just ordered a USB wifi button. Couple of days to get here and that should get the new PC internetable. Let Microsoft and the mb manufacture online update me out of my troubles.

Another big problem is the conclusion that demanding small amounts of diversity is going to fix things. In principle, I would agree that that's what the model shows. But in practice, there's all sorts of problems that crop up. For instance, the problem of tokenism. Which group is more diverse: a white guy, a mexican guy, and an indian guy who all pretty much agree, or 3 black guys who all think really differently? Moreover, there are plenty of situations where you want certain variables to be uniform and other ones to be diverse.
So I guess I'd say that the model suggests that IF you want *a certain kind of diversity* to be stable and accepted, then the best way to get that is incrementally--which is precisely the Conservative approach. What annoys me to now end, however, is the screechy liberal "demand" that your environment be a certain way along with the heavy-handed moralism against people who may have different diversity preferences.
