Fundamental Concepts : A Melting Pot, Not a F****** Salad Bowl [Weirddave]

The United States has traditionally been seen as a "melting pot", meaning that people from all over voluntarily join together to form a greater whole. This concept is even enshrined in our national motto E pluribus unum -"Out of many, one". Nobody ever questioned the concept, we even learned to sing about it as children:

So what does the term melting pot mean? America is different from any other country in the history of mankind in that we were founded on an ideal. Anyone can become an American, all that's required is that you come here and adopt our ideal and you're as good an American as anyone else. Nowhere else in the world is this true, even today. Even Canada, as culturally similar to the US as it is, doesn't believe this to the degree that we do. I could move to Canada, take citizenship there, live there for the rest of my life, and my obituary would refer to me as a Yank. The same is true in Germany, or Japan, or Iran or Argentina. The assumption that anyone can be a citizen, equal to all the rest, just doesn't exist elsewhere in the world. All we ask is that you assimilate into our culture and contribute. Together all of us make up a whole that is greater than any of us individually.

The salad bowl, on the other hand, implies just the opposite. Oh, it sounds similar. Instead of a soup, America is a salad. Different ingredients, mixed together to make a complete dish, but each ingredient remains distinct from all of the others. This maintains diversity we're told. Each ingredient is able to retain its own identity separate from the salad as a whole.

Well, the two concepts sound similar, what's the problem? The problem is that while they sound similar, they aren't in one important aspect. In a melting pot, the individual components are indivisible. Next time you're eating soup, try and pick the salt out of it. It's impossible. The salt is a part of the soup, an important part, the soup wouldn't taste as good without it, and it cannot be separated from the soup. A salad, however, is divisible by its very nature. Don't like tomatoes? Pick them out. You still have a salad. Carrots not your thing? They're gone. It's still a salad. And so forth. The ingredients of a soup become part of the soup in a way that salad ingredients don't become part of a salad, and that's the crucial difference.

Having tortured the analogies beyond reason, let's leave them for a moment and introduce humans to the mix. There are any number of tendencies that are inherent in human beings, but one of the most basic is that we are tribal by nature. The founding fathers recognized this and realized that the great American experiment could very well fail if its citizens retained their preexisting tribal loyalties in their new country. There had to be something to supplant the old tribal affiliation, and thus the melting pot concept was born. Nobody was denying that individual citizens had been Dutch, or English, or Spanish or French, but now they were American. The previous tribal identities became part of a larger, better identity that superceded the old one. Salt does not lose its saltiness when it becomes part of the soup, but the soup is greater than the salt alone. Everyone loves soup. Who eats straight salt?

So where did the salad bowl concept come from, and more importantly, why has it replaced such an elegant construction as the melting pot? The salad bowl idea is a product of critical theory ( and that's something worthy of a dozen posts on its own). Simple version, critical theory is a Marxist doctrine whose purpose is to destroy traditional American society and culture so that it can be replaced with a socialist Utopia. Once you understand that, the devious and dangerous nature of the salad bowl concept becomes evident. The melting pot emphasizes and nurtures the importance of the greater whole. The salad bowl pays lip service to the idea of a greater whole while working to undermine it by emphasizing the primacy of all the individual components. Is the onion more important than the crouton to the salad? Of course it is and no way in hell. It depends on the individual. Now the focus is on all of the individual ingredients in opposition to each other. Salad? What salad, who cares, did you hear what those scallions said about us peppers? Who the fuck do they think they are? What's that you say, the cheese is on the scallions' side? They're oppressing us! Goddamn this stupid salad that allows that oppression. Peppers rule! Fuck scallions AND cheese! We have to burn this bitch down!

Is this starting to sound familiar to anyone else?

Canadians tried to differentiate themselves from the US by calling themselves a "Mosaic," which just means the same as the salad concept, everyone lives in "cells" throughout, and it's not working, just like all socialized countries.

The only difference is, it just hasn't peaked into chaos yet, because of population (small) and not that many immigrate to Canada in the first place.

17 The first time I heard the salad bowl analogy used to replace the melting pot analogy was about thirty years ago watching an episode of 60 Minutes.

They story was about redefining America and what it meant to be American and an American.

Now, decades later, we see the trees grown from those seeds.

There has been and still is a Soviet Union growing here inside the USA, and people are slowly beginning to see it.

21 Seriously, though, the melting pot only works with low-to-moderate levels of immigration, legal or illegal.

The Ellis Island wave of immigrant is considered nothing but awesome now, but it brought us massive corruption, Tammany Hall, the Progressive movements, lots of race riots and chaos.

That wave brought America to the boiling point -- so we basically shut down even legal immigration for a couple generations to let the melting pot do its work.

We probably need to shut down all immigration, legal and illegal, for the next 30 years or more to let the melting pot absorb this current huge wave.

37 The fact the avg white person in America isn't exactly sure of their euro heritage -- is a function of the melting pot. It's all the German and Irish and English and Italian and Poles and everybody else all intermarrying and making babies till it got confusing.

That has to happen to this wave of immigrants for the melting pot to work. It's hard for the Irish to hate the English here cause most of the Irish-Americans are a quarter English on their mother's side. European ethnic conflicts dissolved in America due to interbreeding more than any intellectual understanding.

The melting pot does not mean individuals or even groups of individuals lose their separate identity.

It means they become members of a united identity. The analogy is about unity. We are all individuals, but we are all also unified as Americans.

The white-asian divide has been less of an issue cause of pretty high rates of mixing as lots of white dudes dig asian chicks and lots of asian chicks dig white dudes.

Similarly the white-hispanic divide is constantly melted away by people bonking each other and making babies. It's only as strong as it is in the southwest cause of such high levels of immigration, decade after decade -- filling up the bathtub faster than the melting pot can drain it.

Not as many people may come to Canada as to the United States, but I've seen the population grow from 21 million when I was born in 1969 to 35 million today. And walking around, even the smaller cities, you can see the effects of immigration. Windsor, Ontario, across from Detroit, is Dearborn, Michigan North with stores with signs in Arabic, mosques and a very large Muslim population.

But, to disagree with the post, they're considered Canadians, and the liberal governments which loathe my white, Christian ass would argue that the young Middle Eastern guy I saw at Best Buy with an arm and a leg mysteriously missing is every bit as a Canadian as I am. And they would find a way to punish me if I publicly said otherwise.

Now, I could imagine how maybe if you had only once heard the phrase "Chevrolet Caprice" or "Chevy Caprice" you could have misheard it and thought perhaps it was spelled "Cheby."

But if you own the car, you must know that it's a "Chevy."

I guess there are just people out there whose brains work differently than mine, and for them there is no linkage between printed text and the sound it represents.

Or maybe spelling is by now a thing of the past, a forgotten tradition like curtsying or phrenology."

The melting pot is working in America, just not fast enough to cope with these insanely high rates of immigration. Legal vs illegal isn't really the issue. A country and a culture can only absorb so many foreign people at one time.

A few hundred thousand a year, melting pot could handle that.
A few million a year -- it clearly can't.

If we shut down immigration for 20-30 years and let the melting pot slowly work on the huge immigrant population we have -- we'd have a lot more unity.

The 50s really did have a more unified America - and it had the lowers % of foreign-born in 50 years before or since.

50 years from now we'll see a bunch of quarter korean, quarter irish, quarter mexican, quarter generic white guy types roaming America.

Those types are pretty immune to crazy ethnic Al Sharpton rabble rousers.

78 "I could move to Canada, take citizenship there, live there for the rest
of my life, and my obituary would refer to me as a Yank. The same is
true in Germany, or Japan, or Iran or Argentina."

I would argue that this is actually no longer the case, with the sole exception of Japan.

These days, pretty much the rest of the developed world have adopted the same horribly flawed concept that all you have to do is show up, and go through citizenship procedures, and you thereafter instantly become, and will be described as being, "of" that country. Regardless of your real culture, beliefs, and allegiances.

I read a headline the other day which said something along the lines of "British woman commemorates war death of Swedish husband".

These individuals were both Muslim jihadis. Affiliated with the Islamic State terror front. The "war death" in question occurred while the husband was busily massacring Kurdish civilians in northern Syria.

The "British" woman was not British: not biologically, culturally, philosophically, religiously, or linguistically British. Not as those categories of Britishness have been traditionally understood.

She was a Middle Eastern immigrant Muslim who had been granted British citizenship and had lived for a few brief years in the UK. But apparently that pair of minor steps now abruptly and magically makes one "British" in toto.

Likewise, her "Swedish" husband was not Swedish: not biologically, culturally, philosophically, religiously, or
linguistically Swedish. Not as those categories of Swedishness have been
traditionally understood.

He was a Middle Eastern immigrant Muslim who had been granted Swedish
citizenship and had lived for a few brief years in Sweden. But
apparently that pair of minor steps now abruptly and magically makes one
"Swedish" in toto.

So essentially, these other countries are trying as well to do the American melting-pot model. Without realizing that the American melting-pot model was an intrinsically unworkable concept from the start. And it's failing even faster and more dangerously for them then it has failed for the USA.

83 The creation of the hispanic/latino identity in the 1960s was insane since most are already mostly euro ethnically. It's already a mix of amerindian and spanish euro DNA. The melting pot is already half done. There was no need to create a separate govt category and freeze it in place.

The BS "hispanic" govt identity is like how many countries have white, black and "colored". The "coloreds" are the govt ethnic identity for people who are mixed white and black. America doesn't have that as an official ID. The stupid one drop cultural rule means most white-black mixed people identify 100% as black.

If govt forced us to check Irish vs Italian vs German when getting a driver's licence maybe we'd have some dumbass one-drop rule where everybody who was quarter Italian would be trying to brag how they are 100% Italian.

thankfully we don't have that and all the euro-mutts in America don't have to pick one ethnic heritage and pretend the others don't exist.

"Hispanic" is just the "colored" version of white-amerindian mixing.

Interesting historic development which swung from discrimination in favor of the majority (Jewish quotas, black and Amerindian segregation) to those in favor of a variety of minorities (affirmative action quotas) with the acquiescence of the majority itself. 92 The melting pot metaphor belongs to an earlier. The pot that contained the melt was industrialism, not some abstract notion of constitution or freedom. The constitution and freedom allowed for a period of vigorous industrialization that provided large scale employment. That employment concentrated people from a wide variety of backgrounds, heritages, and even languages into a common workforce (factory floor, rail yard, whatever) where out of necessity they learned to collaborated in a mutually beneficial and tolerable manner. The easy way to achieve this necessity of getting through the job was to build a shared culture that became characterized as uniquely American. We no longer that kind of mass employment opportunity. Modern employment is far more segregated and fragmented in even the largest organizations so that there is much less necessity to conform to larger shared culture. The concept of USA alone does not present a melting pot. Lacking the industrial revolution, concept of USA would have promoted a salad bowl of individualism and independence.

97 "Language unifies us."

All on its own it doesn't. Unfortunately.

A common language is a necessary but individually insufficient precondition for genuine national unity.

Reflect that, apart from occasional silliness like teaching Swahili or ebonics to black kids in the public schools, the African-American population is overwhelmingly Anglophone, and has been for many generations.

Yet the majority of African-Americans remain completely culturally unreconciled to the mores and norms of Anglo-American society. To include even the country's core political architecture, derived originally from pre-existing Anglo traditions, frameworks and concepts.

I recall reading the recollections of a white teacher who had worked for years in a majority-black public high school, having asked a group of seniors in the classroom what the U.S. Constitution meant to them.

One girl shot up her hand. "It a white thing."

Cue chorus of laughter from the other pupils.

In Mexico, the word for anyone who is part European and part Indian is "mestizo" (which means "mixed").

93% of the population in Mexico is mestizo. There are actually very few undiluted Native Americans and undiluted Europeans left there.

Very recent genetic studies show that the mix on average for individuals is about 66% European ancestry and 33% Native American ancestry.

"Mestizo" is essentially the equivalent of the "Colored" category in Apartheid South Africa -- whch now considered utterly racist as a concept. And yet "Hispanic" -- as you point out -- is little more than the American version of "mestizo" or "colored."

Feds: Navy engineer tried to steal schematics for new carrier class

A Navy engineer was arrested and charged Friday with attempting to steal plans for the Navy's most advanced aircraft carrier, now under construction at Newport News Shipbuilding.

Mostafa Ahmed Awwad, 35, a York County, Va., resident who worked at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Virginia, was indicted on two counts of attempted exportation of defense articles and technical data, according to a news release from U.S. Attorney Dana J. Boente. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 20 years in prison on each count.

Awwad intended to send the schematics to Egypt, authorities said.

107 "but the melting pot works, it worked for centuries."

I demur entirely from the proposition that mass multinational immigration has been conducted in America "for centuries".

It's been not that much more than one century, and for certain decades of that century, there were strong immigration lockdowns in place.

Moreover, even in eras where we don rose-colored glasses and cover the lenses with gauze and Vaseline, when looking back to the imagined "success of the melting pot" model in epochs such as the 1950s, you would find if you actually went back in a time machine that _damn little_ actual melting went on.

I used to work for a guy who grew up in an Italian neighborhood of New York City in the fabled wonderful 1950s. When everything is retrospectively claimed to have been great, and the melting pot was supposedly doing all kinds of awesome stuff to make ***YAY AMERICANS YAY*** out of the various multinational immigrants.

I asked him about his having visited other areas of the city at that time (where my own family had residence) and what he might recall of that.

He shrugged and said that Italian kids like him stayed in Italian neighborhoods. If the Italian kids went outside of those boundaries, they promptly got the living shit kicked out of them. And, of course, if anyone who wasn't Italian came and desecrated an Italian neighborhood with a non-Italian presence, those outsiders would get the living shit kicked out of them, too.

Likewise, during this purported heyday of the "melting pot", Jews lived with Jews, Irish with Irish, Puerto Ricans with Puerto Ricans, blacks with blacks. And those rules were enforced with violence. Not official violence, but violence nonetheless.

Today's column
is dedicated to a very special Canadian man by the name of Marc Lepine. On this
day, 25 years ago, he killed 14 women at the Polytechnique school in Montreal.

Stories are on the CBC website. I'm having trouble with links.

Even then, the stupid, young
liberal kid I was, wondered in the back of my mind, why no pictures of the
gunman? A horrible massacre takes place and the media can't find one picture of
the gunman?

But Marc Lepine wasn't born Marc Lepine - he was born Gamil Gharbi - something
you'll find scrubbed from all of the reporting today. In fact, even Mark
Steyn's article seems to be scrubbed from the internets.

But with some searching, you can find that Marc Lepine was Gamil Gharbi, the son of an Algerian Muslim
immigrant Liess Gharbi and Quebecoise Monique Lepine, he grew up in a poor and
extremely dysfunctional household in Montreal.

But for 25 years, his heritage has
been covered up in a convenient lie to further multiculturalism, women's
victimhood and gun control.

Even in death, Gamil was every bit the Canadian I ever was or shall be...

that with Lebanon as an example of there be dragons, multi culti would
be cast upon the scrap heap of bad ideas. I was wrong."

But of course when you point out to the chattering classes the violent disintegration of Lebanon, they have a handy excuse invariably close to hand: everything would have worked out for the best if it hadn't been for those meddling Jews next door.

138 I read this as an indictment of our current immigration policy. We set the bar so low that there is no sense of accomplishment or pride amongst the illegal community in being American.

If the American people take no pride in being American, why would legal and illegal immigrants.

One purpose of public schools from some point in the 19th century was to foster Americanism in those who did not develop on their own with debatable results. Now the schools teach anti-Americanism (or perhaps 'All the Things Wrong with America).

143 Part of the problem in Lebanon is that the Christian part of the population had a ready escape. They came here, and to other countries in the west, and their diminished number there hurt their traditional roll as the tie-breakers between the other factions.

The leftists see the muslims as allies in their war against the concept of individual liberty and limited government. (The enemy of my enemy is my friend, sort of thing). If successful, the leftists think they can control the "genie in the bottle;" they are wrong. Having no religious anchor themselves, the leftists don't understand the religious of any faith.

153 fairweatherbil, I agree that people don't value what they don't work for.

Once there was a big corruption scandal in a nearby town and an immigrant from Egypt I think gave quite a nice little explanation to a news reporter of how the city council was violating the basic principles of the Constitution. The bad guys are all in prison now.

The best thing about legal immigration is that people learn what it is to be an American and they dig it.

Posted by: DaveA at December 06, 2014 03:07 PM (DL2i+)

158 I know I am late to the party but I do want to point out that the whole "La Raza" thing is about the racial melting pot in the area where Spain conquered the New World and bred with the indigenous women to create a new master race of mestizo hybrids. Perhaps that is a useful philosophy in places that still maintain a rigid class system which is based in no small part on race with Peninsulares at the top but I am not sure that it is all that helpful in the United States today.

On the contrary. He got Ebola out of the news cycle despite the fact that there are more than 1400 people in the US currently being monitored for Ebola.

166 This is not a new problem. Teddy Roosevelt railed against hyphenated Americans a century ago. We simply need the cultural confidence to assert that there is an essential core philosophy of "Americanness" -- a sense of fair play, equality before the law for all (not just for your ethnic group), a rejection of the zero sum game, and a refusal to kowtow to authority.

168 I have to disagree with one point. America was not founded by a bunch of people who just created a new country ex nihilo from philosophical musings along with an entire culture, mores, and norms.

America has deem Anglo-Saxon roots, and it was those aspects that carried over and that the Founders wished to preserve and protect.
