Video Games Make People Violent. But So Do Snakes, Bacon, and Serious Chess

Despite a widespread belief in a link between video games and violence the evidence for it is tenuous and based on flawed and quite possibly bogus studies.

For nearly thirty years we've been having this discussion, asking the question: do violent movies, music or video games make people violent? Well according to Brad Bushman and Craig Anderson of Iowa State University, yes. Based on the results of their research they concluded in 2001 that video games and violent media can make people aggressive and violent. Based upon their data and their conclusions, however, it's safe to say that photos of snakes, crispy bacon, or a particularly rigorous game of chess can also make people aggressive and violent.

...The aggression they define in their study is a short-term increase in heart rate, blood pressure, and aggressive or competitive thoughts and actions. A reaction familiar to anyone who's ever played a competitive sport. It's also a familiar physiological response for anyone who's ever seen a photo of a snake or dangerous predator; it's a typical arousal response enhanced by competitive stimuli and excitement as indicated by any number of empirical studies on human autonomic responses. Music, films, TV, even books can elicit such a response from an average individual.

And given that violent video games are more popular and common than ever you'd expect to see this reflected in an increase in actual violence right? Well actually not.

Over the past ten years homicide rates in the US, Japan and UK have declined significantly. Additionally, in 2012 the United States had 14.8 homicides per hundred thousand people, while Japan and the UK had .4 and 1.2 respectively. The raw numbers are more shocking but the proportional estimates are a bit more illustrative: the three largest consumers of violent visual media have some of the lowest homicide rates in the world.

Of course the crazies are often drawn to violent video games but then they're crazy - their brains take in the same inputs as normal people yet produce crazy thoughts. The problem isn't with the inputs.

Chuck Shumer's Devious Trap for Gun Owners

Oh he's not banning guns in the latest version of his bill, S. 374, "Protecting Responsible Gun Sellers Act of 2013," no siree no. He's just laying out a minefield of potential gun offenses to make it nearly impossible to own a gun and NOT inadvertently commit a 5-year-pound-me-in-the ass felony.

Here's a partial list of new offenses:

  • If you leave home for more than 7 days and leave anyone at home, that becomes a felony illegal transfer. 5 years in prison for each of you.
  • If you take a friend shooting and allow him to fire your gun, that is a felony illegal transfer. 5 years in prison for each of you.
  • If you have a gun lost or stolen and don't report it within 24 hours, you've committed a felony. 5 years in prison.
  • If you lend a gun to someone for to try out at the range, provide a loaner for a student in training, let your son shoot a rifle you purchased while hunting, or provide a gun to a woman for self-defense, you've committed a felony. 5 years in prison for each of you.

Expect states and cities to jump on this bandwagon as well.

PJ O'Rourke On Maps of America

The maps he's referring to are here. And yes this is internet archaeology i.e. more than 3 years old.

Maybe the real secret to America's greatness is that we hate one another. Consider the enmity between unions in the smokestack industries and lovers of the Kyoto Protocol, between feminists and sexually predatory chief executives, between Hispanics and blacks, between blacks and Jews. Put them together and you get the power of the Democratic Party. Likewise with Republicans. Their might is dependent on alliances of mutual distaste: country cousin and country club, white collar and white trash, Rotary and Davos, Neanderthal know-nothings and neocon know-it-alls, fans of Pat Robertson and fans of Pat Buchanan.
The maps may not show the cause of crime, but they do show the cause of poverty: obviously, it's the equitable distribution of wealth. A low incidence of poverty is seen in places where the ratio of households with a $10,000 annual income to households with a $100,000 annual income is 1:4 or less. Of course, there may be no households with a $10,000 annual income in those places. One way to get rid of poverty is to price the poor out of the neighborhood.

Wealth is very evenly distributed in areas where there isn't any. These aren't necessarily the expected areas. Residents of the northern Plains states, thought to be rugged, turn out to be ragged. The struggling Rust Belt has little poverty and extensive concentrations of wealth. The booming Sun Belt and the vibrant Southwest encompass the majority of America's poor counties. The liberal Northeast (where poverty is blamed for bad behavior) and the conservative heartland (where bad behavior is blamed for poverty) have one thing in common: not too many poor.

Day of the Dolphin 2013 Edition

"The Ukrainian Navy has a small problem on their hands. The Atlantic reports that, after rebooting the Soviet Union's marine mammal program last year with the goal of teaching dolphins to find underwater mines and kill enemy divers, three of the Ukrainian military's new recruits have gone AWOL. Apparently they swam away from their trainers ostensibly in search of a 'mate' out in open waters. It might not be such a big deal except that these dolphins have been trained to 'attack enemy combat swimmers using special knives or pistols fixed to their heads.' Dolphins were trained at Sevastopol for the Soviet Navy as far back as 1973 to find military equipment such as sea mines on the seabed as well as attacking divers and even carrying explosives on their heads to plant on enemy ships. The U.S. has its own dolphin program in San Diego with 40 trained dolphins and sea lions and another 50 in training. U.S. Navy dolphins were deployed in Bahrain in 1987 during a period when Iran was laying down mines in the Persian Gulf to disrupt oil shipments. No word yet on whether 'sharks with frickin' laser beams attached' have been added to the U.S. arsenal."

So watch your cornholes.

The Maetenloch Clone Army That's Who

Thanks to the latest work in somatic nuclear transfer my clone army is getting nearer by the day. Soon my pretties soon!!

But scientists in Japan announced yesterday they have succeeded in cloning mice using the same technique that created Dolly with more or less perfect results: The mice are healthy, they live just as long as regular mice, and they've been flawlessly cloned and recloned from the same source to the 25th generation. Researchers claim it's the first example of seamless, repeat cloning using the Dolly method-known as "somatic cell nuclear transfer" (SCNT)-in which the nucleus from an adult source animal is transferred to an egg with its nucleus removed. Until recently, the process was fraught with failures and mutations. But the team led by Teruhiko Wakayama, whose results were published today in the journal Cell Stem Cell, was able to create 581 clones from the same original mouse. Scientists, including Dolly's creator, have long felt the process was still too unstable-and too wasteful of precious eggs, given the failure rate-to be used on humans any time soon. But perhaps it's not so far off, after all.

Meanwhile in Russia: The Punisher

Everyone complains about bad drivers but in Russia 'The Punisher' is doing something about it.

Meet Alexei "The Punisher" Volkov, a Russian bus driver who has become a local celebrity in the city of Zelenograd for ramming rude drivers who cut him off in traffic. Equipped with a dashboard camera, Volkov says he wants to gradually improve people's driving etiquette by documenting each collision and posting the footage online. Volkov claims his employer approves of his actions, as the bus typically only receives minor damages from the impacts.

Swingers Club Group Sex Record Attempt Ends in Fire, Tears

Filthy scandis just can't handle their fire and group sex.

"I feel empty inside," one of the hostesses from Club Adam & Eva told The Local.
"There are no words to describe the loss. It's unreal."

A swingers' club in eastern Sweden has been forced to abandon its attempt to set a new Swedish record after a fire destroyed the building that housed the "erotic oasis".

...More than 200 people had signed up to partake in the festivities, which were to feature a 30 square-metre bed and an attempt to set the Swedish record for "group sex", the Nyheter24 news website reported.

"I hope for a huge pile [of people]. That would be cool to see," the head of the club told Nyheter24 last week.

"I'm going to miss the cellar and all the great people you meet down there," wrote one member.

18 re: Guns and Nate Silver

Silver concludes that overall gun ownership is down since 1974. But that decline is due only to Democrats not owning guns.

Republican gun ownership remained constant.

In his analysis of the cause(s) - Nate failed to take into consideration that, since 1974, Democrats are born and live in places where legislation has made it damn near impossible to buy, own, or think about a gun.

That seems a likely causal factor. But I'm not Nate Silver.

37 I'm digging the Pope Francis pick, but have to admit it's amusing watching the desperate-for-a-progressive-angle media go on and on about his Latin American heritage (you can tell they want to say Hispanic but, alas, they can't), when in fact Francis is 100% Italian, as both his parents were born in Italy and migrated to Argentina as part of the 20th century Italian migration movement.

Side note: Argentina has more Italians than any country on Earth other than Italy, and Italians constitute the majority of its population, as is also the case in Uruguay. There are also 30 million Italians in Brazil.

Anyway, in addition to committing the George Zimmerman "white Hispanic" sin in reverse (and again, man, do they want to paint this as a Latin American thing), they completely ignore the facts that his name is modeled after Francis of Assisi (patron saint of Italy), and that his primary language is Italian, not Spanish.

Yet another swing and a miss by the racist, uninformed MSM.

Heh the positions going to be refilled.
Review boards are hard dollars (because of all the Pharma Money.)
Seriously I think they had know idea what to do with someone who knew both the regulations and the theory behind the regulations, which meant I was remarkably good at determining where things were apt to go wrong (because they followed the letter of the law rather than the actual intent.)
I was told I asked "why" to much (seriously) which apparently is a liability when you're busy trying to get studies approved.
They wanted more of a "worker bee" who was capable of shuffling paperwork or something with I guess minimal understanding of the actual importance of the paperwork. (quote are actually things they said to me.)
They hired a PHD student in Health Care Ethics, did they not expect to get someone like me?!
(Strangest part was when they said they wanted to use me to increase communication between the review board and the health care ethics department, and then never did that and seem flustered when I'd pick my professors brains for problems I was having with my work.)

Ok, the swinger article is just full of awkward phrasing.
"I feel empty inside," one of the hostesses from Club Adam Eva told The Local.

Luckily she quickly resolved that problem with the help of three nearby gentlemen and a goat.

"My husband and I had planned on heading there this weekend for some nice sex with other couples. But that plan went belly up," wrote another.

As opposed to the plan going "belly down, ass up" which would have meant success.
The hostess, who has worked at the club for four years and is one of about a dozen or so who help the club operate, said the club and it's members were "like a family".

A family where the members have sex with each other.

They pretty much all say Ignatius Loyola was the main man, converting after being injured during a war, and then, ironically for purposes of this discussion, basing his conversion in part on the example of Francis of Assisi, who also went to war and then came back and walked away from family wealth to lead an austere lifestyle.

I would probably do well to emulate the piety of any of these gentlemen.

155 Sugar [L]andis supposed to have a very good Vinyard church so I'm looking for something in about a half-hour drive from there. My sister's looking more in the Pearland area so her husband can attend Fuller Seminary and she can get woek as a surgical PA and go to school to become an official surgeon.

Not sure about the Vineyard church b/c I'm Catholic. Lots of nice churches in the area though, as Sugar Land (and btw, you've got to use the two word version of the name there or you'll hear about it) is a good conservative place in a good conservative county (Fort Bend). For what it's worth, there's also good schools and golf courses, but again, it's pretty damn crowded there these days.

I mentioned Richmond earlier, that's maybe 15 minutes from S'Land. I also mentioned Waller, but that's a good 30-35 minutes and heavy Southern Baptist.

Pearland has a good reputation by is nothing special IMO, and is also getting pretty crowded. Many people love it there, though, so maybe that's my local bias kicking in. The schools also have a good reputation, as does Friendswood a little further south of Pearland.

Good luck finding what you're looking for whatever you decide!

226 Just remember this is the historical background for Pope Francis.

His parents immigrated from Italy to Argentina during the time of Il Duce and no jobs in Italy.

WWII is pretty much blank to him personally. But he grew up in the time of Peron and the Nazi influx to Argentina. Also the collapse of the country because of the excesses of the Perons and how it impacted the average person.

He was elevated to wearing the regalia of a Cardinal by Pope John Paul II.

So just from that, the chances of him being a neo-Marxist card carrying liberation theologian like Pfleger are slim.

I am on board with that – a victim of a crime will be deemed a
criminal and punished for not reporting the crime WITHIN 24 hours.

5 years seems fair for not reporting the theft of an item worth about
five years for stealing it (based upon dollar value, IANAL).

Used to be rape was a capital offense, maybe life now, why not up to
life in prison for not reporting being the victim of rape and not
reporting within 24 hours? Good luck on your defense if a third party or
the perp turn state’s witness against you.

284 Hey, today I found evidence that Saint John of Patmos did actually see the Throne! We're here looking at Rev. 4:6, "and before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal".

This isn't as weird as it might look.

The point here is that where we can first start thinking of time, there is God and there is the elemental chaos, envisioned as water. God by nature is immediately separated from chaos; and then perceives chaos as "water" and "down": Genesis 1:2, "And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters". [Genesis 1:1 is the book's subtitle, not a verse.]

God then sorts out the chaos into earth and the heavens. On the seventh day, we have Genesis 2:2, "and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made". This is probably the King-James translators' misunderstanding of the Near Eastern theme of God assuming His seat on the Throne. It doesn't mean that God is taking a weekly nap! [Walton, "The Lost World of Genesis One"]

It's later pointed out in Psalm 104 that God is He "Who layeth the beams of His chambers in the waters". The Throne, then, is over these "waters"... This is further elaborated in 2 Enoch 27, that God has fused the elemental water-like chaos over Earth into a glassy substance, to keep the Crystal Spheres from bleeding into one another.

tl;dr. So, when John is seeing the Throne as being on "a sea of glass", he is actually observing the glass over the tohu wa-bohu. But he didn't quite know what he was looking at.

Which means he probably did see it.

Almost all of these panics and scares to explain "juvenile delinquency" were just means to shout "SQUIRREL!". The modern left is typified by moral relativism. They rightly fear any clear delineation between "right" and "wrong". Everything has to be situational, or it'd be wrong to impose your views over your inferiors', evil to starve the kulaks, or bad to command the intellectuals to go starve in the farms.

Posted by: bebe's boobs destroy at March 14, 2013 12:35 AM (gU+VR)

365 Maybe I can, for a change, put some knowledge on the horde, instead of the other way around. If you line a baking sheet with a double layer of heavy duty aluminum foil, put your bacon on it, and do it on the grill outside, you can eliminate the bacon smell from permeating your household. Easy. And then let the grease solidify out there, remove foil and grease and hopefully no mess. Usually.

371 If you have ever seen a psychiatrist, you have a file and that file has a diagnosis. Why? Because that is their gig. As a matter of fact, that is their entire gig. They see people and pronounce diagnosis. Once diagnosis is made, it is simply a matter of making that particular diagnosis a matter of public concern. And now, under Obamacare, that file (like all medical files) is now public (shared with the government administrators) and shall be scrutinized by political apparatchiks who also have access to your voter registration and how much you contributed to political campaigns in the past. These are the people are who are in the position to deny you treatment for anything from a broken bone to pancreatic cancer.

Peachy, huh? Yeah, what could possibly go wrong with that?

What is more depressing is that I am seeing next to no political opposition to Obamacare, and so I am thinking that we, the American people, richly deserve this privacy ass raping that we are about to get. We are just that stupid, and demonstrably so.

---------

Oh, it will be used for more than that...

You'll be required to apply for a 'Federal License' to own the guns you already have.

The form will require you to list all the guns in your home.
Then, if they don't like the cut of your jib...it's "License Denied!"

And they have a list of all the guns to look for when they knock on your door.

There was a bill in the House that outlined this, back in 2009...Bobby Rush's HB 245.
It was one of the things that the Tea Party was incensed about.

So they already have a nice outline to follow.
Oh, and it had a 10 year prison term, as punishment for not having a Federal License for any of the guns in your home.

What I'm getting at is if you don't like your religion--if you want it to change in significant ways--then you don't like your religion. Why remain? Changeable dogmas and rules mean you can't believe anything finally becausethedogma isn't immutable. Kind of undermines the very notion of organizedreligion. Religion isn't a democracy, certainly not a religion that has an infallible leader. Why would a liberal cling to such an organization in the first place?

In the 19th Century new Christian sects sprang up in America. So why don't these dissatisfied lib nuns break away and found their own sect? They could retain all the outward trappings and rituals and charity and whatnot and eliminate all those practices and dogmas they don't feel comfortable with.

----------------------------

The problem is that the "practices and dogmas that they don't feel comfortable with" are much of the reason for having a church in the first place. Otherwise it's just a feel-good social club. And there are plenty of those already. Studies have shown that churches that *gasp* actually try and push their members toward following strict rules tend to have stronger and more active membership.

Paying a pastor to tell you that everything's good and you don't need to do anything that you aren't already doing sounds like a neat idea. But apparently it tends to get boring pretty quick.

To tell the absolute truth....I put a replacement tank on last night, and it worked fine but it leaked at the fill connection -- and I blew it off all day 'cause I wanted to play. It probably takes two applications of a crescent wrench to fix, but I didn't.

My comment to Schumer through is Senate contact form. He supposedly represents me. This is unaltered and unedited as I. Just.Don't. Give. A. Shit. An. Ee. More.

------

(I find it funny that you don't have gun grabbing as a choice under 'Topics'. Oh and the 'Taxes/Budget' choice is hilarious, considering you Jackass Party Senate fucks haven't passed a budget in over 1,400 days and counting; CR's are not a budget.)

(link to a Bob Owens article.)

Hey, Bride of Chuckie Schumer, you commie gun grabbing prick. I see you continue to violate your oath of office to uphold the Constitution by trying to rip the Constitution to shreds (like your Lard and Sewage, Barack Insane Owebama, hates and destroys our Constitution). A hearty fuck you as you are like the other Jackass Party pols: A lying piece of shit.

You want to make law-abiding Americans criminals (when you can't be bothered go after illegal aliens who are criminals just by being illegal)? Go ahead. But remember Jefferson's views on the 2nd Amendment: “When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.”

Just to give you a definition of tyranny, motherfucker, here's my dime (adjusted for Owebama inflation): Not answering constituents' questions is tyranny. Not reading bills before voting on them is tyranny. Making law based upon emotion is tyranny.

Yep, time for commie pricks like yourself to pay the penalty for being such tyrannical busybodies. That's also why you want our guns, for totalitarian control; you can't control an armed populace. (I know you don't know dick about history, or even the Holocaust [as you're a JINO, a Jew In Name Only], but it was gun confiscation that abetted the Holocaust. There's nothing the leftist fucks [and Hitler was a leftist fuck] hate worse is a Jew with a gun.) There are too many historical examples (yeah, I know, icky History) showing where gun registration has led to confiscation has led to genocide. Have you taken a look at South Africa's current genocide against whites, after the marxist African National Congress government grabbed guns? Nah, didn't think so. I can only hope that America takes Jefferson's thoughts on the 2nd Amendment to heart, and instills some fear in our Government 'employees'. (You do remember you work for us, right? Not the other way around?) I also fervently hope that if you commies continue to push gun grabbing, making the law abiding criminal, that they turn over their firearms to proggie fucks like yourself -- BULLET FIRST. (Is this why the government has been buying millions upon millions of rounds, to prevent us from taking care of business? Or is it merely self-preservation?)

No gun grabbing without Representation! (And you sure as hell don't represent me.)

Now let's see if you, one of our modern political mandarins, will deign to reply to one of the hoi polloi that you allegedly represent and explain yourself. I doubt it, you being entrenched in the Ivory Tower that is Capitol Hill. Oh, and did I say FUCK YOU? Just want to make sure that message is not lost.
