Neocons Agitating for More Victory-Free Wars, Again

What a shock.

If Donald Trump doesn’t take the Oath of Office on January 20, 2021, one principal but little-noted reason for this may be that he crossed one of the most powerful and least accountable forces in the nation: the military-industrial complex. As Trump said last September, "the top people in the Pentagon...want to do nothing but fight wars so that all of those wonderful companies that make the bombs and make the planes and make everything else stay happy. But we're getting out of the endless wars, you know how we’re doing." Now, however, that Joe Biden has been anointed "President-elect" by the establishment media, the propaganda is already starting to get us back into one of those endless wars, in Syria.

We learned just recently that we never really left Syria in the first place. As Victoria Taft noted at PJ Media Friday, President Trump’s former special envoy for Syria, Never-Trumper Jim Jeffrey, has boasted that he circumvented Trump's orders to withdraw American troops from Syria by lying to the president. Jeffrey explained: "We were always playing shell games to not make clear to our leadership how many troops we had there," and "the actual number of troops in northeast Syria is 'a lot more than' the roughly two hundred troops Trump initially agreed to leave there in 2019."

What the Masters of War have in mind, however, is a far greater commitment of American troops than even Jeffrey's shell game allows for. After all, how else are they going to keep happy "all of those wonderful companies that make the bombs and make the planes"?

More at the link.

At the Federalist, a call for the final act of Trump's first term to be pulling the US out of all of its endless quagmires.

In a recent memo advocating a swift U.S. drawdown from Afghanistan, Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller gave shape to the fundamental political stand of the Trump administration--realism and restraint.

"We are not a people of perpetual war -- it is the antithesis of everything for which we stand and for which our ancestors fought. All wars must end," the memo read. This comes after a rapid purge in the last couple of weeks, in which President Trump dismissed Defense Secretary Mark Esper and replaced him with Miller in what was termed by the leftist media as a takeover of the Pentagon by the National Counterterrorism Center.

Trump also appointed Col. Douglas Macgregor to be a senior adviser at the Pentagon. Macgregor is a fierce opponent of endless wars, and previously nominated to be the ambassador to Germany, but was not yet confirmed.

This has the potential to conclude America's longest and perhaps most pointless of military engagements. While the idea was to decimate al-Qaeda and punish the Taliban, that was over by 2005. By the time of the surge in 2007, the overall war had morphed into a nation-building process with a sunk cost fallacy.

...

In a New York Times interview, Ruger was quoted saying, "The president has had difficulty finding personnel who would faithfully execute on his preferences," adding that now is the last chance for Trump to cement his legacy and stand for what he believed during his campaigning: ending fruitless wars.

That article notes that progressive Democrats -- who once claimed Bush was Hitler and "lying us into war" -- are now claiming that Trump's determination to end foreign quagmires is "one last favor to Putin."

My, how things change.

My own opinions on this have shifted. I was pro-war. I still am pro-war on some level.

But I am pro wars that end in victory.

For whatever reasons, the US doesn't seem in the business of fighting wars that end in victory anymore. We're now in the business of fighting wars that end in defeat or at best in stalemate, and fighting those literally forever.

We are now entering the second generation of occupation and nation-building in Afghanistan. The second generation.

We're actually well into the second generation, rather than merely starting the second generation, if you define a generation as fifteen years, as we do sometimes.

Anyone under 21 years old has literally never known a day when the US was not in Afganistan.

Our failure to "win" per any plausible definition is not a license for continuing to stay in Afghanistan -- it is, rather, a call to realistically redefine what is possible in Afghanstian.

Nation-building this savage shithole into a western pluralistic liberal democracy is not possible -- period. And to waste another American life or limb in pursuit of pipedream fantasia is a vicious sin.

We are killing our boys for nothing.

I favored war in Iraq because I did not want to see, as one critic called it, another 20 years of Clinton-style "maintenance bombing," in which we just occasionally send cruise missiles and B-52s to let Iraq know: Stop or we will bomb you worse.

I didn't want that policy to continue. I wanted to have Peace Once and For All.

But there is no such thing as Peace Once and For All. That is a childish fantasy. As Patton told fourth graders just after World War II: "You are the soldiers and nurses in the next war. And there will be another war. There always has been."

So the choice is not between conflict and Peace Once and For All. The latter doesn't exist. There will always be conflict.

The choice is between conflict at a relatively low cost ("maintenance bombing") and conflict with a high cost (a full generation of pointless bloody nation building for primitive savages).

War is an evil. It can be a necessary evil, and a justifiable evil, when that evil leads to the longer-term betterment of the world and for our own national interest.

But where there is no long-term betterment, and no national interest being advanced, than that necessary evil is unnecessary, and war is simply evil.

We are killing our own men for no fucking reason -- apart from sparing some old men who have constantly made poor decisions from having to show the courage of admitting their errors.

Our foreign policy "Wise Men" are not wise.

They are merely creatures of habit, sad, cowardly men who find comfort in the status quo.

And the status quo consists of Americans dying for no reason at all.

Especially not the Virtue Signaling Neocons like Ben Sasse and Mitt Romney -- men whose records are impeccably clean of any prior military service.

But oh! Give them a chance to tell them how Virtuous it is for other (better) men to die in war! Give them a chance to show how Good and Nobel they are to waste the lives of other (better) men while never risking so much as a hangnail in defense of their supposed Moral Imperatives.

Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah thinks that the U.S. needs to keep troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, stating that even after 20 years of a military presence there, “conditions for withdrawal have not been met.”

"The decision to withdraw our troops from Afghanistan, Iraq, and potentially elsewhere should not be based on a U.S. political calendar," Romney said in a statement. "The Administration has yet to explain why reducing troops in Afghanistan--where conditions for withdrawal have not been met--is a wise decision for our national security interests in the region."

Twenty years. Twenty fucking years.

An entire generation spent fighting a war for, what? To achieve victory?

No they gave up on that in 2008. We're now fighting, it seems, to achieve "conditions for withdrawal."

Say wasn't that what we were allegedly fighting for in Vietnam from 1968 to 1974?

You know, Vietnam is still a painful memory for Americans.

But how long were we there? From 1963 to 1974 -- just eleven years.

But we've been in Afghanistan for twenty -- and Mitt Romney, a man who has never spent a minute in uniform, a man who has taught his children and grandchildren to avoid military service as he did, says we have to spend another ten or twenty years in Afghanistan.

To achieve "conditions for withdrawal."

We do not fight wars to achieve "conditions for withdrawal," you cowardly monster, and we do not fight wars to show your Virtue and Moral Courage in sending other (better) men to their deaths.

The conditions for withdrawal are achieved: Those conditions are "fighting for twenty years with no plausible victory condition in mind."

How about these craven chickenhawks and ludicrous strutting Moral Peacocks write about The Conservative Case for Peace for one fucking time in their cowardly, no-military-service lives?

19 As a Moron noted, there are men dying in Afghanistan that weren't born when the war started.

30 For example: if we have a war against the mainstream media, we can have as a concrete objective the death and destruction of, say, 90% of the talking heads on TV, all editorial and writing staff and producers/owners.

Once that objective is complete, the war is complete. You have to know what victory looks like, our you'll just diddle around without focus and without your end point.

38 The choice is between conflict at a relatively low cost ("maintenance bombing") and conflict with a high cost (a full generation of pointless bloody nation building for primitive savages).

Maintenance bombing wasn't low cost, the costs were just hidden. Maintaining a lid on Iraq required us to maintain an increasingly untenable regional status quo. It also was part of the reason that Bin Laden believed that we were weak: we wouldn't do anything more than drop a few ineffectual bombs.

Removing Saddam gave us much more freedom to maneuver, politically speaking, gave our allies such as Saudi Arabia breathing room (I don't think we would see the kind of reforms that have occurred over the past twenty years without it) and eliminated the big boogieman the mullahs could point to in order to scare their own population (the US isn't nearly the same as the guy who literally had invaded a decade earlier and killed their brothers/fathers).

Regarding Afghanistan, when I was there in 2011 the general opinion among my peers was that it would take a generation to fix. IMHO the problem is that we've spent the past twenty years with one foot out the door. It's constant two year plans and "one year to stabilize the situation". We'd have been far better off saying at the beginning, "fuck it, we're going to be here for twenty years, so we're going to act like it."

43 There was something to be said for moving theater of engagement. We were fighting (and still are) a disorganized international militia. Moving the theater to somewhere far away and causing those disorganized militias to concentrate there and then killing them en masse instead of having them come into the homeland piecemeal to execute domestic attacks against essentially indefensible targets wasn't a bad overall concept.

The problem as I see it is that we got mired down in dealing with the broken and corrupt nation-states there. Rebuilding them was a catastrophic mistake, as was pivoting the combat objectives from slaughtering those disorganized and stateless militias to defending the state systems of the places we invaded.

The primary objective has a rational endpoint, and we passed it *long* ago (and would have passed it even sooner if we'd kept our eye on the ball). The adjusted objectives, though, of providing state defense and rebuilding and imposing democracy and all the rest is where the mistake happened. And that mistake was made almost immediately, when those functions became a parallel objective to the primary reason of "killing the bastards over there."

You can get away with nation building and converting a system a government, but you can't get away with it until the enemy state and her population are shattered and destroyed. If you want to do that, it requires total war until unconditional surrender. That was never an objective in the Middle East (and it shouldn't have been) and was doomed to fail from the start.

54 It's logical to want a good sized military, sparingly used, but always there - just in case. I get that. But I'll argue that we've reached a point where our political leaders - democrat and republican alike - can't be trusted to use that military wisely. I'm all for reducing the military in both size and scope - because just like a big FBI, big DHS, and every other big entity we build - the current size of the military is too big a temptation for our current political class. The only way we'll reduce their ability to get into more and more stupid foreign wars for profit is to reduce their means to do so.

Square that circle while you look at the hideous thuggery of American-born of Yemeni refugees threatening two GOP'ers into certifying the Wayne County election results. We must stay in Afghanistan, but we also must let places like Hamtramck, MI flourish as a vibrant immigrant community of people from these same countries we send out=r own to fight and die.

69 There is the right way to do this and there is the wrong way. For the latter, see what Obama did in Iraq. To rush this would be a repeat of that process.

Let's face it. It certainly sounds like Trump was subverted by a lot of people on an overall withdrawal. First it was Mattis, then it was Esper and a host of others. Everything else aside, this is insubordination. They asked for time, the president provided it, and then when the deadline came they said they wanted more time.

Trump outright stated we don't have a long term interest that calls for large numbers of troops in AFG. There is a large part of Washington that doesn't agree. The problem is they have had a long time to define what our interests are, and what our withdrawal timeline is. This whole "conditions based" approach has been a failure because they keep resetting the bar.

The fact is we have very little long term strategic interests in Afghanistan. The current government has not held up their end of most of their agreements and are getting into bed with other actors. It's a shitpot we are not going to solve anytime soon and in the meantime we are targets.

I have no issue with keeping a smaller presence in the region to serve our own selfish interests. We have given enough blood over the years to say fuck you, we are staying and Bagram is ours for now. But we should not be fighting any combat missions. It should be advise and support.

Notice all these heroes in DC haven't fought in theater, and a lot of them have bloviated about this for years. Put on some boots and grab a gun, or shit the fuck up, assholes.

If we have to go to war it should be under the assumption, and with the stated goal, to be done in 3 to 6 months at most. So we go in, blow up who we have to, then get out. Kind of like what Trump did, we want Solimani (sp) we don't start a ground war in Iran, we wait till he takes a trip then stop a rocket on his head.

We had leftist who bitched and moaned about wars under Bush, ignored Obama's constant need to put our soldiers in harm's way, but then clamed up when it came to supporting the fact Trump has done everything he can to not have more Americans die in needless wars (in fact we got the opposite like hack Libertarians like Kennedy who complain about war but screamed bloody murder that Trump was pulling troops out of Syria)

130 Too much blood and treasure has been spent on endeavors that are pointless. Iraq and AFG will never be a functioning Western-style democracies and with our f#@ked up system, I don't know if I'd wish that on them considering our issues.

I'm a practitioner of real politik, which isn't based on moral terms. I don't care if the dictator of Iraq or AFG is a bastard and flays people alive. I really don't give two shits about the human rights of these people. All I care about are the interests of the US. I just want an American-friendly dictator to be in charge of the rabble in Iraq and AFG.

When I was in the Persian Gulf War, I admittedly thought at the time in my youthful naivete that we made a mistake stopping at the Iraqi border. I realize now that our leaders at the time knew what the potential consequences were for us.

It's hilarious that the Democrats spent most of my life during the Cold War cozying up to the Soviets and any other communist shit-sipper they could while bleating that we weren't spending enough tax dollars on social engineering schemes. Like that idiotic bumper sticker that said that the Air Force should be forced to conduct bake sales to raise money for its next bomber. They tried to scuttle every weapons program during the Cold War. Now they're born again hard? Sure.

Now they want a war with Russia. And Iran. And anyone else. Of course they'll be the restrictive ROE (rules of engagement) to ensure that only our troops, airmen and sailors pay the ultimate price and victory is always out of reach.

Because Europe can't do the job and we don't want the world's oil supply to be controlled by assholes. We are, thanks to fracking, exporters. All our allies are importers and we can't supply their demand.

This is correct.

My own view now is that the US should commit to keeping the sea lanes open for trade, and be prepared to level any uppity dictatorships that threaten those sea lanes. 80 percent of world trade is by sea, and we no longer need middle east oil.

And we should have the ability to destroy China and Russia from space if need be. Just because they are the most likely threats to try to reconstitute their empires.

But I knew I'd get push-back on cutting the military as soon as I wrote it. A big military is baked into the id and ego of the American Conservative. Just like a big police department. And neither of those serve our interests. It's just another example of that circular thinking that we seemed determined never to break, no matter how often it bites us in the ass. That's the way most wars are. War is an extension of politics. It almost never ends with unconditional surrender and a victory parade. At best one side wins a big battle, gains a bit of ground, and both sides back off until a few years later when they fight it out all over again.

200 Only for about the past three years. We became energy independent for the first time in half a century, and that changed a *lot* of the math on the ground in terms of international affairs and especially for Middle East affairs.

We're going to have to go back, and do so in force and forever to maintain global energy stability if Biden pulls off his theft. When the US stops producing oil again, the former joule-political status quo is going to become necessary again (or some version of it).

Technically, yes.

But in practice -- not really. We haven't been a large importer of ME oil in decades.

Most of our imports came from Canada and Venezuela. But even in 2004, we were still producing 50+% of our own oil domestically.

Most of that ME oil goes to either Europe or Asia. And has for many, many decades.

While true, oil is a global commodity and is extremely fungible. Without energy independence, you have to prepare to stabilize the entire market in perpetuity, and that includes far-flung locales even if we don't use much of their oil directly under normal circumstances.

If you are energy independent, though, you can shield yourself from that by controlling energy exports. If there's a supply shock and prices are becoming untenable, you can restrict the amount of oil that you export and stabilize prices at home, or even use your exports to play kingmaker by favoring useful allies for export product.

But if you're an importer, you have to care about the global supply and market in order to maintain your own status.

We possibly could have, at least with Canada. But it's better to not have to be in that position *at all.*

But this *will* be the argument again, because if he gets his way (both with the theft and his policy objectives), Biden will destroy American energy independence and rebuild foreign policy around energy supply again, and the world has changed in the last three years. Trump changed it, and Biden (well, his people) is not smart enough to make the transition that he is going to bring about when he turfs American energy.

Biden's policies on American energy development are the biggest foreign policy risk we face, except possibly for China.

I agree, your way is not a bad way to define "winning".

But the US didn't conquer Mexico, retreated from lands US troops had advanced into, and paid substantial war reparations, to end hostilities.

As for the Indian Wars, I concede that you may have the stronger argument for those being "won". I'd note that sovereign nations exists within US borders today. I'm not arguing that they shouldn't, or that this isn't a desirable end-state. But if "winning" means conquest and assimilation, that wasn't the outcome.

316 I think a bit of information is critical. "Appeal" has a particular meaning in regular litigation distinct from a challenge to certification. When you go to court, that's generally the district/superior/trial court level. That's where you're supposed to dump your evidence. If you lose there and "appeal", you can't dump more evidence in the appellate court. You should have done that in the district court. "Appeal" from certification seems more like a generic use of that word, and, again, if you lose that "appeal", and "appeal", you don't get to dump more evidence in the appeal of the denial of the appeal, unless you have really, really, really extraordinary grounds -- otherwise the legal system would fall apart.

AtC can correct/advise/elaborate.

Because we have tens of millions of White Americans who have given up and believe -- correctly -- that the ruling class of America increasingly hates them. Decades of teaching them that White lives don't matter tends to have that effect. Decades of proud and open Anti-White discrimination by academia, industry, and government. And decades of smearing anyone who points any of this out as a white supremacist.

Posted by: MarkW at November 18, 2020 05:53 PM (iDVR9)

Generally very few victorious wars result in the complete annexation or partition of the losing side. I tend to measure wars won or lost based on stated(and sometimes unstated but implicitly known) objectives and aims. If the aims are achieved, it can be considered a win, or partial win depending. Heavy casualties are a Pyrrhic victory, pretty straightforward. A defender can also "win" a war that has no territorial transfer if their only goal was to not be annexed.

I'm honestly not sure they value their families. We've seen too many cases where they literally offer up their kids to Moloch the state, and consider it collateral damage for the greater good if something happens. I'm thinking of some of the antifa moms in particular. Homes? Sec. 8 housing probably.

But their own skins? Money? For sure. The rest? I'm willing to put it to the test.

497 "My own opinions on this have shifted. I was pro-war. I still am pro-war on some level.

But I am pro wars that end in victory."

Then you are anti-war as it is defined in today's United States. Victories are for losers or something. If these motherfuckers jack around and get us into something even more involved and more ill-advised than bringing our perverted version of democracy to the Hindu Kush, the United States will suffer a humiliating, crushing, empire-ending military defeat unless it is willing to use nuclear weapons. I actually would welcome it in a way as this would be good in the long-run for the people of the United States and the world, but have too much love of my young countrymen, some my own kin and blood, to see them die in either a phony war or one certain to be lost because their reputed betters have no skin in the game.

I will be on the streets rioting if troops are deployed anywhere else. There may be left-wingers at my side (probably not since a Democrat likely will be president and they are hypocritical liars), but I don't care. I also would advise anyone to treat as a false flag any "terror" attack anywhere in the continental United States since the warmongers and the financial remoras who cling to them realize so many people have arrived at the place I am.

The question that has to be asked to determine whether war is justified: would the militarists be willing to die in a nuclear exchange if things go south and there is no alternative? If the answer is "no," then it isn't worth fighting. The answer always will be "no," particularly if their Chinese sugar daddies would be on the receiving end.

Finally, this may be the last election where I vote as it is. If the likes of McConnell and Romney sign off on a new war, I can guarantee it is my last involvement in electoral politics.

It's a loophole in the system that the Left has exploited perfectly. Courts won't step in beforehand because they'll say it's too early; and they won't overturn anything afterwards because it's too late.

This is not a joke - the court system is stacked against us, we will not win there. The only hope is for the legislatures to refuse to certify the vote. If they do certify it, then Biden will be inaugurated in January. No court will stop it.

538 @521

See that right there is bullshit.

In many cases you don't have to be harmed to get a court to act all you have to show is that the action is likely to cause harm.

When states like Texas passed laws to require abortion doctors to have admitting privileges at hospitals, the laws were immediately stayed, they never went into effect, no one was harmed.

They went to SCOTUS and SCOTUS invalidated the laws on basis that abortion is the supreme law of the land and these laws would cause harm.

So again, you don't have to be harmed, you just have to demonstrate to the satisfaction of the court that the law will cause harm.

So the main takeaway is, we're fucked if it all comes down to the SCOTUS doing the right thing.

Hint: They won't.

There's no magic in the gnarly wind-beaten mountain men. We're just not allowed to attack them where they live.

Somehow, I doubt the Neocon Paladins will support that plan. They hate victory almost as much as they hate peace. They don't care about the national interest, or even about making the world a better place, just their own moral standing.

599 I have a son finishing his first enlistment (Army) next year. He blows hot and cold on whether to re-up. I hope he doesn't.

600 They are trying a multi-generational approach to what Britain did to itself in WW I and II; kill off the cultural / genetic stock for courage and combativeness, leaving behind the materials for a society of socialist drones.

Considering the fact that the US is the source of political correctness, critical race theory, affirmative action;also that the US is on pretty much every social metric the most effed up nation in the West one has to wonder which war killed off the best cultural/genetic stock in the US. Civil war maybe?

601 Romney's decision to put American lives on the line is based solely on his hatred of Trump.

What a POS.

602 "And the status quo consists of Americans dying for no reason at all"

No, it's worse than, Americans will be dying because these jackasses want to spite Trump.

Hanging is too good for them.

603 I am 74 years old and a retired Master Chief Petty Officer, USN. I had two sons. The oldest one went into the Navy after high school, served 6 years ( advanced electronics program) and is doing very well in civilian life. The youngest one went to Penn State ( we payed his tab) and joined the Army (Infantry) after graduation. He was assigned to the 4th Brigade, 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley and was soon assigned to the Sergeant Major as a driver due to his education and superb physical conditioning (gym rat). They were a surge unit into Iraq and his unit spent 15 months there. His MRAP was blown up by an Iranian EFP and he was heavily concussed. A month later, he was entering a building and it was hit by a rocket and once again , concussion. With two Purple Hearts, he could have been sent back to the U.S. but he wanted to come back with his unit. He came back a changed man. He had traumatic brain injury, short term memory loss, PTSD, hearing loss, back injury and a raging drug habit from pain pills. He was a changed man and died in 2016 due to a drug overdose. Our local VA has built a new addition to deal with the mental health wreckage from the Middle East wars. I have a burning hatred for for these money grubbing bastards that support these wars.

604 The problem with fighting to victory is that in the aftermath you need to either LEAVE, or settle in an rule. Nation Building g is an exercise for dupes. You get all the exposure of plying old fashioned Paternalistic Colonialism, with a tenth the control and none of the benefits.

605 I was a child when Vietnam started and I ended up serving there. The actual date the first American died in Vietnam was 1945 killed by the Japanese. That means Vietnam was a democrat war up until Nixon became POTUS.The highly touted JFK (Democrat) got us in that mess and got a lot of people killed. 58,000 Americans and 1.9 million Vietnamese, not to mention Australia, RoK, Thais and Cambodians.

607 No young white male should EVER volunteer for the military as this country is no longer worth defending. Nothing serves to remind them of their last place in society as watching the upcoming spectacle of a doddering old fool incoherently giving his first (and probably last) State of the Union address with two radical San Francisco cunts sitting behind him.
