Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | THE MORNING RANT: Public Radio is Being Squeezed Thanks to Trump Defunding the Corporation for Public Broadcasting![]() I am not going to do a grave dance, because I am still greatly saddened by the loss of what public radio once was in the days before it sold its soul (and much of its programming time) to NPR. After I graduated from college in the 1980s, the local public radio station was probably my most-listened to station. It was a companion that provided locally-produced shows featuring music that none of the commercial stations played. There were local DJs who hosted eclectic shows full of new-to-me music, especially acoustic, folk, bluegrass, classical and blues. Some DJs would have music from all those genres in the same show! I was a loyal donor for many years, but the expanding NPR lineup and its left-wing programming was like a cancer chewing up the station’s airtime. My last check payable to the local public radio station was in the late 1990s, shortly before my favorite Saturday morning acoustic music show was replaced by a smug, know-it-all, NPR show titled “Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me.” Around the same time, I tuned in one July 4th morning, only to hear NPR airing a show about how awful and racist the U.S. is, and how July 4 is such a difficult day for enlightened Americans. I don’t know if public radio could have survived long-term in the internet era, but by attaching itself to the radical leftists at NPR, it certainly hastened its own demise. Thanks again to Donald Trump and the current Republican Congress for defunding NPR by defunding the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

“WUTC hopes high-dollar donors will step forward to help close $89K shortfall”
First Point: "Hope" is not a plan. Second Point: Under DSA, there is no such thing as "high dollar donors" because all will be subject to incarceration, underwriting their perpetual criminal defense costs, and outright theft through newly imposed "Wealth Taxes". (formerly known as "Plunder") Third Point: OTA is dead. Investment in controlling the algorithms to point to obscure influencers who shape their opinions and principals from who is the highest bidder, that is where the money is. FUD has been fully monetized and runs on cruise control due to amoral people who will slit their own throat for clicks and quick monetization and izzat. James people aren't just "nervous about the election", they are making themselves sick over it. Over something that HAS NOT happened. Yes we care a lot but we are the warriors and passionate recruiters. It helps the Left to fuck our heads over. To keep us from sounding happy and like the side that should be joined. Hell, to keep us arguing rather than coming together. Things are a lot more complicated than "this doesn't make more people vote differently". The war we are in is mental, physical, electoral and spiritual. Posted by: ... at October 30, 2026 11:21 AM (I+a8W) 102
61 I still maintain it's just about making money, that no one in power thinks these things actually influence people anymore.
Fundraising from polls and odds. And then just direct gambling manipulation on the odds. Posted by: TheJamesMadison ====== Grifters that are political consultants nowadays benefit from what you said but also they have no problem demoralizing the electorate too. GOPe long used negative ads to basically repulse less partisan people from voting with the idea of reducing elections to base voters only. GOPe has lost power to MAGA which emphasizes voter mobilization but has a higher number of low propensity voters since Trump won the first time in 2016. So now the Democrat strategy has become trying to keep the unwashed low propensity masses discouraged from voting. Democrats are relying on their increasingly radical base voters and gimmedat coalition rather than trying to broaden their appeal anymore. GOP has become the big tent party instead to the dismay of GOPe pols longing for the good ole bygone days of Bushworld. Posted by: whig at October 30, 2026 11:22 AM (E4rtv) 103

Since getting SiriusXM (we travel a lot, both for pleasure and business, and some of the areas we cross through have crappy reception - particularly the more mountainous areas), I've gotten used to starting with the subscription service for both symphony and jazz. Those selections have come to form so little of the NPR selections that it's mostly not worth trying to find them. There's still the flagship NPR news and talk station in Philadelphia which I avoid, and a station licensed to the University of Pennsylvania featuring adult alternative music, World Cafe, that I do listen to while driving. She's horrible, and the bad part of me kinda hopes this stalks her forever. Mommy and daddy are rich, she'll be just fine. Connected to that: I checked yesterday about the Kirkiversary cake incident at U of U, where that horrible girl brought the "Happy Kirkiversary" cake to the college republicans booth on the anniversary of Charlie's death. Who got in trouble? Not cake girl! It's a liberal school, that'd be crazy. The college republicans were threatened with expulsion, because they took video of the incident and posted it. (Someone told one of them they would "Kirk them" at a previous event. Prob filmed for proof.) Sleuths figured out who cake girl was and doxxed her, but the repubs got in trouble. Good news: the school dropped all charges and the college repub kids won't be expelled. I suspect public pressure was too great. Bad news: other than shame on socials, cake girl will have no repercussions. She's working on a medical degree to work with kids. I wouldn't want my kids within 100 yards of her. Posted by: Axeman ======= Far too many yutes think being an internet influencer is a golden path to fame. Like OnlyFans, a few get the golden ticket and the rest simply degrade and debase themselves. But, useful in the real world to the rest of us sane individuals. Our current radio and tv ecosystem is dying as ad money goes to the net and like newspapers, means more and more national cheap news coverage using godawful AP crap. But broadcasting did have one virtue, it was free, it homogenized and united a local area over local concerns and news, and built a community. The internet does no such thing--it doesn't build squat on the local level and actually makes IRL community building worse by heightening national divisions and shoving those into local communities. Once upon a time (decades ago!!!) PBS could be a pretty good watch...though admittedly most of the pretty good watching came from the BBC. It was there that I first heard the radio version of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (the original), and the radio pay of Lord of the Rings. I used to listen to Dick Estell read books as well on the Radio Reader. Mom would listen to public broadcasting until the year she died.
But yeah, even back in the 80s, All Things Considered was pretty leftist (I recall Christiane Amanpour being a reporter for them back then and she hated America then, too). And it just got worse. The purpose of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting was to fill a perceived gap in public entertainment on radio and television. They were not easily moved, They were icy-willing to wait Till every count should be proved, Ere the English began to hate. Their voices were even and low, Their eyes were level and straight. There was neither sign nor show, When the English began to hate. It was not preached to the crowd, It was not taught by the State. No man spoke it aloud, When the English began to hate. Elon hits it on the nose again.
My biggest concern is that if there is a clean sweep by Democrats of the House, Senate and Presidency in 2028, they will: 1. Make DC and Puerto Rico states to gain a strong majority in the Senate. 2. Open the borders and legalize everyone living in America illegally to cement a permanent majority. 3. Increase the size of the Supreme Court to gain an immediate majority. This would result in America becoming a permanent one-party state and the end of democracy in any meaningful sense of the word. https://tinyurl.com/mrawcd5h Posted by: Archimedes at October 30, 2026 12:00 PM (Riz8t) 301

https://tinyurl.com/rjjpt8zd Posted by: JackStraw at October 30, 2026 12:02 PM (viF8m) _______ You will never get people over their fear of sharks because it's something ingrained to fear the giant predators, even if they statistically there's very little to fear. The most dangerous animal in Africa ain't the lion. It's the hippo. By far. But ask people what they're afraid of, and they'll say "lion" 1000x more times than "hippo." Good, the Democrats are burning money to make political consultants rich. Mailers and adverts do little to change races nowadays.
I think political mailers and door hangers do nothing but annoy postal carriers who have to lug 150% more weight around this time of year. They're like "Book trailers" that feel like you are Doing Something and appeals to fans that already were going to buy your book but never sell to anyone else. Its like most advertising, it just keeps advertisers in business. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at October 30, 2026 12:11 PM (TMNW7) 361
The entire point of public radio and public television was that it was publicly funded, so there wouldn't be any corporate advertising.
And then they got corporate advertising anyway. They wanted to be just like any other TV or radio station, so let them live and die on advertising revenue, just like any other TV or radio station. Posted by: FeatherBlade at October 30, 2026 12:12 PM (PLy7M) 362

348 Lefties are getting more clever. There's a video going around of a college girl reading a horrific sadistic poem all about how great it was that Charlie Kirk was killed and it should happen to all non-leftists.
She looks perfectly normal, no nose ring, no green hair, she's fit and has no visible tattoos. She could be reading something at church. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor She redid Night before Christmas and put vile words to it. Typical AWFL that turned something nice into something vile and disgusting. Won't advance the leftist cause one bit but social virtue signalling by leftists are done by tone deaf idiots enmeshed in their hideous bubbles with likeminded dolts. Professing allegiance to evil in public is not the win that a leftist thinks it is and that is due to the existence of social media bubbles. Posted by: whig at October 30, 2026 12:13 PM (E4rtv) 366

Paul Ryan famously advocated for gutting CPB funding…until Ryan became Speaker of the House and had control of the purse strings. Suddenly he determined that defunding CPB represented only negligible federal spending, or that it would consume too much political capital, or some other lie as he rubbed his betrayal in our faces.
The GOP refusal to end public broadcasting funding has always baffled me. They never had sufficient budget to be a real force in lobbying, it was never a massive part of the public that consumed any of that media. They just refused to do it, no atter how horrific and blatant the bias was. I could never understand why. If a Democrat gets into the oval office, I would wager my kidneys that the GOP votes to bring back the funding. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at October 30, 2026 12:14 PM (TMNW7) 368

I remember when NPR would have all their familiar on-air voices read the Declaration of Independence on the morning of each 4th of July.
Red Barber's quintessential American voice reading the part with worst of the King of Englands transgression always made me grin. And, then... sometime in the 2000's some NPR Morning Sedition jerk-hole told me they could no longer in good conscience read such an distressing document. That was it. Deleted the button on the radio. Not another dime or time. Now I listen to K-BACH (KBAQ) exclusively. It's all classical all-the-time. No NPR news. Ah, the independent public radio station that you mention sounds very much like KNON in Dallas. They have volunteer DJ's who present music shows on just about any type of music there is. I used to listen to their early morning gospel show on the way to work - it mostly sounded like the blues, then I'd listen to the Blues and Country shows on the long drive home from work.

I disagree Buck. It is 100 percent wrong to have the federal government pay one dime for programming that isn't universally liked by the populace. And I like more niche music myself.
