Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Wednesday Morning Rant![]() One example of the "scientific" part of it being optional is the moral panic over plastic drinking straws. You probably remember this one. In 2015, a video showing what was alleged to be a plastic drinking straw being removed from a sea turtle's nose spread on the internet. It was fairly unpleasant, the turtle was obviously suffering and the then-current boogeyman of "single-use plastics" was enthusiastically blamed. The normal cries of "SOMEBODY NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING" went out and then the special interests, virtue signalers, press organs and of course the state came to the rescue. There was a "simple fix" for this "major problem:" eliminate plastic drinking straws. Don't stop to think about whether it's actually sensible. Don't consider any other consequences. Don't consider the public. Just implement the simple fix and save the :: spins wheel :: sea turtles. So we did. It started, as it usually does, with the virtue signalers and media organs. After all the stories of the horrors of drinking straws and the inevitable social media amplification, outfits like Starbucks and American Airlines loudly announced that they would eliminate the modern-day horror of plastic drinking straws. Countless other places followed suit, spurred on by social media, NGOs and lobbyists. Then came the state actions. States like California and its little sister Colorado started prohibiting automatic distribution of plastic drinking straws (the customer must ask for one) and so helped the product to get crowded out, with Colorado going further more recently. Countless municipalities banned straws and often extended those bans to other "single-use plastics" like shopping bags. The little thing was in fact very big, had huge effects on the market and the substitute good - usually, paper straws or bags - was wildly inferior and people hated it. It was only a matter of time before the revelation that this is all pointless at best came to the fore. As anti-straw fervor spread widely, including to Korea, that country's government commissioned a study on drinking straws. They commissioned the study after taking action, of course, but what they found will surprise nobody who has seen this wheel turn a time or two:Conventional plastic straws had the smallest impact in 10 of the 16 categories, including climate change, acidification, particulate matter and human toxicity. Bio-PE straws had the largest impact in 10 categories, including ozone depletion, acidification and smog. Paper straws had the largest impact in three categories, while biodegradable plastic straws did so in two.So, as usual, the response was worthless at best and destructive at worst - and disruptive and expensive regardless. The sea turtle incident was used to flog a global movement against "single-use plastics," with the turtle-maiming plastic straw as the whipping boy. They got their way. In many places - including places where it can never make sense, like landlocked Colorado - they are no more. All they did was forcibly exchange plastic straws for an inferior substitute that is no better and may be worse. This is what always happens and this incident followed the normal progression. They achieved nothing but compliance for its own sake. Don't expect facts to get in the way or for the bans to be rolled back, though. It was the "right thing to do" and the right kind of busybody mini-tyrants feel far too good about it. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

As I sit here in Canada sipping coffee (to prevent staining) through one of the 500 or so remaining plastic straws I have left. Plastic straws or 'wood + mystery stuff to simulate plastic straws.' Not a tough choice. The whole jihad against plastic straws/bags amazed me.
I live on the east coast. I went to a town hall discussion on banning plastic bags. Why should we do that? Well the pro-banning side brought up the case of a whale in the Philippines that got bags stuck in its throat. Ok. I live on the east coast of the US - tell people in China/Philippines to stop littering and leave me alone. The ban passed BTW. And I remember some Karen arguing that sure the non-disposable bags they were replaced with needed to be washed and were more expensive but everyone has time and money for that right? "In 2015, a video showing what was alleged to be a plastic drinking straw being removed from a sea turtle's nose spread on the internet."
The video was obviously staged. What are the odds that some rando activist against Demon Plastic just happens to find a sea turtle with a plastic straw that inexplicably got stuck in its nose? The video gives the game away in two respects: One, when they somehow identify that it's a plastic straw at a time when nobody who is watching would think that's what it is. And two, the vid seems strategically edited, as if they cut around parts they didn't want you to see. Then the true nature of the op was revealed when an obviously coordinated messenging campaign sprung up overnight. I feel for the turtle, especially since it was these creeps that stuck the straw up its nose. But a little blood is much better than, you know, getting eaten alive by the 500 predators in the oceans that feed on these turtles. Posted by: Elric The Blade at October 28, 2026 11:12 AM (iFTx/) 39

We can name and shame it (speaking out, marches and rallies), refuse to normalize it (write about it, make art about it); we can prosecute it. ... But what we cannot do is go to sleep, become small and still, with the childlike fantasy that they will not find us. What we cannot do is succumb to it or become them – numb, selfish, hollow and cruel. Our feelings, our pain, our empathy, our rage, our love, our refusal to turn away will be our salvation. Psychosis is the inability to tell what is real from unreal. Our work is to say what we see and trust what we know, to keep speaking truth to power and go to any lengths to stay connected to reality and each other." I worked in a blue city. There was a new environut mayor candidate. My cow-workers loved her. She ran on a platform of among other things making office parks reserve half their parking spots for compact cars. So when she won she put in said rule and the office park I worked in dutifully repainted the spots so half were reserved for compact cars. Those cow-workers generally drove big trucks/SUVs and were often overweight so you can imagine they were now constantly banging other cars with their doors. This created much anger...against the company that owned the office park. I pointed out they were enacting a new rule that the mayor they liked had passed. "But they didn't have to do it this way!" and then when I pointed out didn't they agree SUVs/trucks were bad for da Erf anyway the stock answer was "I need mine though!". He said one of those companies contacted him and bought all their back issues for hundreds of dollars. He had also contacted collector book sellers that said they have been getting orders like that. This magazine deals with aviation history mostly from the 70s and back so has almost no bearing on anything of current import, you would think. "stop throwing shit in the ocean"
From AI: Historically cited studies identified major river systems—such as the Yangtze, Yellow, Hai He, Pearl, Mekong, Indus, Ganges, Amur in Asia, and the Niger and Nile in Africa—as carrying the majority of land-based plastic into the sea. Newer field research shows that thousands of smaller, densely populated coastal and inland rivers also contribute heavily to total riverine plastic emissions. So Asia and possibly our own coasts, where the typical liberal elites live. Posted by: Rex B at October 28, 2026 11:44 AM (sdSI9) 197

GatewayPundit found people who require IDs.
In today's world, where a man's word should be enough. According to the left, it is racist to require IDs to vote, but not when it comes to attending an event with radical leftist streamer Hasan Piker. In order to get into his recent event with Ilhan Omar, attendees had to show their ID and go through ‘airport style’ security. Also, organizers barred the press from entering. Isn’t that what authoritarians do? Isn’t that what we have been told by the left? In the video below, you can see a security person explaining to people in line that they are going to have to present their IDs. Posted by: Stateless - Ralphy - 106 years old! I suspect the sexual aspect of some Karens' desire for open borders is being underreported, especially when you look at how much they HATE passport bros. Posted by: 18-1 ====== Likely. Posted by: whig at October 28, 2026 12:02 PM (E4rtv) 292

I mean, how long an article does it take to say "they're lying!"? Posted by: Archimedes at October 28, 2026 12:00 PM (Riz8t) It was somewhere explaining that conservatives don't like, trust or engage pollsters. For good reasons. If I participate in my part of Canada, I'm a conservative who suddenly LOVES the liberal party. That's what they want to hear. Posted by: Stateless - Ralphy - 106 years old! I pondered the idea of using a Bic pen for a straw. I could justify it as part of my Every Day Carry because I might need to do an emergency tracheotomy, right? Just pull the cap off, pull out the ink/nib bit, and I have a non-disposable straw. But it's plastic so I didn't.
Maybe if someone knows of a metal case Bic-style pen I can buy.... Posted by: GWB at October 28, 2026 12:31 PM (kU0PQ) Processing 0.05, elapsed 0.0588 seconds. |
