Wednesday Night ONT - October 14, 2026 [TRex]

20261009-20261009-IMG_20261009_130513392.jpg

Good evening Horde! The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety. The bar is open and fully stocked. Step up and place your order.

Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT which means another edition of random overnight fun and games. Pull up a chair and join the fun. Good will offerings of amusing puns are encouraged. Pants are optional. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors.

If you're a troll, go away.

This is a Tucker, Candace, Megyn, and Bill Kristol free zone. Please.

Mandatory Maiden

"Iron Maiden is a heavy metal band so their songs are all about partying and women, right?"

No. More like poetry by Samuel Taylor Coleridge in the late 1700s about life on the sea.

Like many Maiden classics, bassist Steve Harris was the primary creative driver for Rime of the Ancient Mariner. It arguably has seven(?) distinct chapters that track the original poem. The studio version is over thirteen and a half minutes. I can't imagine writing it, the reaction of the record company when they became aware of it, or playing it live. It is theatrical, conceptual and a pure passion project you can only get away with after being successful otherwise.

Rime of the Ancient Mariner is the closing track on the Powerslave album, released in 1984.

As Bruce Dickinson says, "This is what not to do if a bird shits on you."

Niche YouTube Channel of the Week

Tonight's feature is a YouTube channel called Jesper Makes. The host is Jesper, a woodworker and creator based in Denmark. ("Viking, woodworker, coffee drinker. What could possibly go wrong?") He works out of a workshop on his property (previously an old horse barn) and has been filming there since around 2020. He has a fondness for reusing pallets.

In fairness, he's more of a philosopher woodworker than just a woodworker. The woodworking is worthwhile but arguably an excuse to tell a story. He makes a simple project into something more interesting and the story is about the project, the mistakes, the journey, and life around the shop. His channel is not about the cool new tool or project drama. It is not a tutorial channel (but you can still learn by watching). His scripts are tight, clever, thoughtful and reflect his observations about life in general. Ultimately, it isn't about the wood or the finished product.

He has over 364k subscribers. Many of his videos attract several hundred thousand views and some reach into the seven figures.

This is his (very accurate) description for a recent video:

I had a two-hour job. Three things, from a pallet that had been leaning in my workshop for a year.

So naturally I spent the whole day avoiding it.

First I built a tool to help me build the thing. Then I made rhubarb compote. Then there was lunch, which became the whole family, which is how lunch usually goes here. The cat supervised. The pallet waited.

This is a video about wasting a day, and about how a day you waste with the people around you might be the only kind worth keeping. It's also about sawhorses. Mostly the sawhorses.

Enjoy!

50 Oh, and how long would it take a grasshopper with a wooden leg to kick all the seeds out of a pickle?

Answer: Can't be done. Dill attracts parasitic wasps and robber flies. These two species are natural predators to grasshoppers. So, that brings us to Sam Raimi. What's he got to do with this, you ask? Well:

He directed "The Quick & the Dead." And, the grasshopper would be the latter.
