Howdy Hordelings! Welcome to the Thursday ONT! Mixed bag of content for those who care. Open thread, as always. On time, as always. What's on YOUR mind tonight?

To embrace rapidly increasing technological advances or not.

Kodiak says yes. Kodiak ready to 'pull the driver' and launch unsupervised driverless trucks by end of year

Kodiak's unsupervised driverless long-haul delivery trucks will soon hit Texas roads as its partnership with Swedish furniture giant IKEA enters a new phase.

Kodiak founder and CEO Don Burnette joined "Varney & Co." Tuesday to shed light on the rollout and the technology behind the autonomous trucks.

"We're starting with one. We're gonna get that first one out by the end of the year, and then we're gonna start to scale throughout 2027 and beyond," Burnette said.

Burnette said IKEA will serve as the launch partner later in the year.

"We're doing just over 200-mile trips to start, but nobody in the driver's seat, nobody in [the] cab," Burnette said.

Burnette explained that Kodiak provides the AI-powered software that serves as "the brain" behind how the autonomous trucks drive.

"We've proven the technology is safe and reliable. We've done a lot of work over the last decade or so to make sure we've covered every contingency, and now we're ready to go," he said.

Doordash says yes. DoorDash drone delivery doesn’t spell end for drivers, executive says

DoorDash is revolutionizing the way it delivers food to its Northern California customers thanks to drones, officials say.

The company insists that all will remain the same, except deliveries made by drones will ensure faster arrivals and more options for consumers.

Harrison Shih, head of DoorDash Air, joined “The Hill on NewsNation” to discuss the new delivery method, adding it may “one day” be an offering in big cities such as New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles.

“DoorDash really is the strongest in your standard suburbs, and I think that’s what makes this service so good for DoorDash, as we think about drone delivery, is DoorDash has really been built around… connecting those communities with their neighbors and getting food across all of those areas,” Shih said.

DoorDash says its new drone can get food to you in under five minutes — but Texas residents are already calling Amazon drone noise a 'big problem'

The future of doorstep delivery is drones apparently (well, drones and robots): DoorDash has unveiled a new drone ready to get food to you in under five minutes on average, even as Amazon faces a growing number of complaints over its own drone delivery service.

DoorDash has been planning drone deliveries for a while, calling the scheme DoorDash Air, and we've now been given a look at the six-propeller aircraft that'll be doing the delivering. A trial is planned for Northern California, in partnership with restaurant brands including Chipotle and Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen.

A lot of work has gone into the pick-up and drop-off infrastructure and ordering system, DoorDash says, as well as the drone itself. The company estimates that around 80% of customer orders are light enough to transport by drone, and initial tests suggest orders can be delivered in less than five minutes on average.

***

The drones won't land when they deliver — they'll lower their cargo in front of your door or in your backyard and then zoom away again. According to DoorDash, failsafes will be built in so the drones can safely land in emergencies, and their cruising noise will be comparable to a passing car "at delivery height".

That noise element might be crucial to the scheme's success. As TechSpot reports, residents in Richardson, Texas are none too pleased about the constant buzzing being created by Amazon drones, which launched Prime Air in the area last December. The sound has been compared to that of a flying lawnmower.

***

Chick-fil-A says not so fast. Chick-fil-A rules out AI drive-thru ordering as fast-food rivals embrace technology

Chick-fil-A is bucking a growing fast-food industry trend, with CEO Andrew Cathy saying the chicken chain does not plan to use artificial intelligence to take customers' drive-thru orders.

While Chick-fil-A is exploring potential uses for AI behind the scenes, Cathy told CNBC that the company wants to preserve human interaction in its drive-thru lanes even as competitors increasingly experiment with automated ordering technology.

"From our experience, we really want that hospitality to be human to human," Cathy told the outlet. "We’re not going to substitute that interaction with technology, because we feel like that hospitality is so important to create that warm environment for consumers."

***

The US Army unsurprisingly says yes. US Army tests counter-drone tech at Mexican border as cartel drone use rises

The US Army is testing counter-drone technology in the US-Mexico border area, seeking to ‌sharpen its defenses against the growing threat of drone use by cartels and emulate the rapid battlefield innovation happening in Ukraine's war with Russia.

At Falcon Peak, a US Northern Command exercise held in September in Arizona, soldiers watched as defense firms demonstrated radars, interceptor drones, autonomous gun systems and other technologies designed to detect, track and destroy small unmanned aircraft.

33 So, after playing around 4 hours of the follow-up to Disco Elysium, Zero Parades: For Dead Spies, I've thrown in the towel.

The protagonist is a lesbian, communist, that looks like Jodi Whitaker, and has a 5 pack a day voice, she's uninteresting and instantly forgettable, the story is insipid, the atmospherics, music and sound effects are boring and uninspired.

It's a shame because Disco Elysium is one of the best rpg's of all-time, along the same lines as The Secret of Monkey Island II: LeChuck's Revenge, which essentially is the inspiration for Pirates of The Caribbean.

And right now, it appears that this is going to be an older and whiter electorate--Gen X and Boomers predominating which are swinging toward GOP. Youth turnout is not going to be that much perhaps below 10 percent apparently with Millennials above yutes but well below X and Boomers so far.

Getting enough early voting and absentee requests now to start painting the actual electorate.

46 The head of the Hartford Symphony came out on stage for the opening concert of the season to give everyone a quick talk. He suggested that people consider buying full season tickets. It’s not just about saving money on purchases. It’s about having a routine, knowing that there is a concert calling next week, building in a ritual that is binding in some way.

More than that, he said, we live in times that are being gravely threatened by dehumanization. We interact more with digital systems than with people. But at the symphony, he said, there are real people, musicians who have mastered their instruments through thousands of hours of practice, and they are playing physical things.

There are bows drawn on gut and steel strings, real cymbals clanging together, mallets hitting drums, lungs powering brass, and a harpist using hands and figures to make the sounds of heaven appear before us. A season ticket shows your loyalty to the humane arts, to the beautiful, to the truth, to the analog world of genuine human achievement

Whatever it is, it has to be incapacitating, if it was something like cancer or even the flu, the candidate would be at least sending out messages, pix from a hospital bed, something other than radio silence. If old, something like stroke might be possible but age tends to rule that out but if Talafreako did go loopy, then his handlers don't want him seen nor heard until they patch him up like Biden.

Whatever it is, it is not severe enough to try to parachute another candidate in, but severe enough that the Dems don't want him seen that way.

His beard is glow in the dark ORANGE. Like he dipped it in orange jello!

No one's beard turns that color in nature, does it? Or maybe there was nuke dust in the hole where he hid and he's sprouting radiation.

I need to go watch something on Amazon Prime and hope I don't dream about him.

You could, but it would depend depend on if you wanted it to be a combat focused tactical game or a true open ended espionage simulator.

The espionage simulator route would probably take around 6 months of total dedication to map out and storyboard, develop the game mechanics and front end to get to an MVP.

It could be done though.

100 Admittedly, I don't pretend to understand all the safeguards instituted into driverless vehicles (and now tractor trailers). But, I'd like to know one thing:

Does AI possess enough logic/ creativity/ precognition/ imagination to view a vehicle up ahead that is creating a "HEY, LOOK AT THIS IDIOT" scenario, and react like we humans do.

The vehicle ahead may be maintaining itself within the boundaries of the lane, although weaving and drifting enough for a human driver to recognize an issue (drinking, falling asleep, medical issues) resulting in us keeping our distance and keeping an eye on them in the event that a quick reaction is required. I don't see AI being able to apply that human response if for the time being the vehicle remains within its lane.

106 Is Talarico's nervous breakdown going to give him the sympathy vote? I guess who'd notice at this point with people like McConnell in office.

Just what people need is a nervous ghey in office.

I enjoyed and related to the redneck video. My beloved father, Marine, chemistry degree, golfing, refined Southern gentleman was most of that.

He even had a "back 40" or at least 10 acres of cars on the farm. Our sons were thrilled to find these relics one winter day, with a tree growing through one of them. Sunk into the ground. Felt like explorers. After his death someone bought the cars to restore and mother got money for them as they were hauled off.

He certainly did not throw stuff away and had jars of screws, etc, in his storage room. He also messed with electricity at times for reasons unknown. An electrician told my mother that the motion detectors were wired with mystery.

There were electric fences for the cows here and and sometimes not seen (one painter was peeing way in the back woods and got a shock).

I had free entertainment for most of my life.

Besides, if Walmart deprives you of your liberty or kills you, it is either kidnapping or murder. If a police officer does it, it’s business as usual and a sign of GREAT police work.

How this is playing out right now puts a spotlight on why Paxton was always a far better candidate than Cornyn. (Despite all the consultant class lies to the contrary). Paxton has jumped on the disappearance and is mocking him in his speeches lately, with no response from the Dems.

When a candidate becomes the butt of many jokes, his campaign is over, especially if he doesn’t respond.

Cornyn would have sat back and said nothing except “that’s not who we are.”

Hi, nurse. Last summer I got a bit of norovirus from the baby grandgirl. She harfed on me and that started the all female band (son, grandson and husband were oddly immune).

I got what I called the cholera version of the diarrhea instant weight loss for days. I knew better than to drink colored gatorade and stuck to a refreshing clear and fruity pedialyte. I need to stock some for end times.

We had to fly to NOLA and see my mother in MS a week later. I look like a corpse in the family photos.

'Twas a lovely time as during the fiesta of pedialyte my husband discovered a leak from the kitchen to the basement family room. Requiring plumbing, sheet rock guys, a drying fan, and painters as I lay dying upstairs.

I didn't care. The contractor told my husband that we were the calmest people he'd ever worked with after a wall flood (well, he didn't see me, but I was calm as near death).

I would point out that the last time I know of a Pacific hurricane to do something similar was the Columbus Day Storm that pasted Oregon in 1962, and hey, it is coming up on Columbus day.

So, if it comes this way I will be taking the meta roofing off the woodshed and putting yard furniture away, somewhere.

404 Y's Dice, no not really. Fed LE (and DOJ) obviously provide tremendous support to NYC on a range of issues. They don't police the streets. If every non-violent/non-natsec situation in NYC suddenly sees it's getting lowest priority from the feds, it will snowball. Finance, etc - not something the dumb freak children at Gracie Mansion can ignore for long.

405 Apropos of nothing - there was some forum discussion a few weeks back about sensitive or top secret information being published inadvertently (or purposely?) during World War II.

I found another one, I think, that almost certainly must have drawn some attention. Or not…

Old time radio program, Superman episode “Dr Deutsch and the Radium Mine” first aired in June 1941

The episode was about Radium, and the evil Dr. Deutsch and his underground lair for smuggling Radium in hollowed out books, which isn’t quite separating isotopes of Uranium, but it’s pretty close, and they mentioned “atomic” power or bombs, and how a small handful of the stuff could wipe out the entire United States.

This is pretty remarkable given the time frame, in that year physicists, mostly refugees from Europe, were still pretty much trying to get the US government to get motivated even about the possibility of fast fission bombs. This was about the time Enrico Fermi tried to alert the US Navy. He managed to get an interview at the War department with some colonel or someone. He overheard an aide alert his boss in his office while he (Fermi) was waiting - “There’s a Wop outside”.

If you were to go to Flightradar24.com and click on the planes going over, you can then find the registration number and then find out who owns the planes.
What gets odd is if all the planes are of a similar make but are owned by different companies and universities. Then you gotta wonder if something is going on.

419 So, every now and then, I do something right.

I had been trying to think what to get Mom for her 80th birthday. Then I remembered I had some audio cassettes my grandparents made when mom and dad first got married. The first one is from February. 1970.

I got them digitized and got the audio link tonight. It is so wonderful. The first tape is somewhat garbled as they were trying to work out how the recorder worked. So it is a bit out of order as I think they listened to what they first recorded and then recorded over the bad spots. I have just been listening for the past couple of hours.

Going to see Mom and Dad for her birthday tomorrow. I hope she likes it.

428 One of the classic anecdotes about the erosion of standards in the US was a story about a small parcel of land in CT, in some small city. It was federal, was surplused and given to the municipality. So the town proceeded to do the necessary to re-purpose the property.

The environmental assessment turned up ..... radioactivity. Very anomalous levels thereof. Hmmm. Further investigation revealed that the site had been the location of a secret facility using radium (I think to paint instrument dials) during WWII.

Key point: quite a few of the workers who had worked at the facility in WWII were still alive, and local. Of course none said a word when the whole property transfer thing was going on. When asked why they never said anything, a woman (as I recall) who'd worked there said something like "it was a secret operation, and we were never told it was no longer secret".

Similar things happened in the UK in the 90s. Standards are real. Their erosion or weakening is one of the most damaging trends in civilization.
