Nice move, Gilligan

Bob Denver Refused to Let the Professor and Mary Ann Be “The Rest”

If you watched the first season of Gilligan’s Island, you may remember something odd about the theme song.

After naming Gilligan, the Skipper, the millionaire and his wife, and the movie star, it ended the roll call with:
“And the rest.”

“The rest” were Russell Johnson and Dawn Wells — the Professor and Mary Ann.

There was a reason. Tina Louise, who played Ginger, had a contractual billing arrangement that put her at the end of the opening credits. Johnson and Wells had signed later and wound up in the closing credits instead. So when the theme song was written, their characters were simply bundled together as “the rest.”

But before Season 2, Bob Denver decided that wasn't right.

***

Years later, Dawn Wells said she hadn't even known the full story at the time. She remembered Denver as the one who went to bat for them.

Bob Denver didn't make a big production out of it.

He just refused to let two of his fellow castaways be treated like “the rest.”

What Paris is telling us to wear next

Spring/Summer 2027 week opened on September 28 and closes Tuesday with Nicolas Ghesquière at Louis Vuitton. The useful takeaway is not the spectacle. It is which ideas already translate: metallic shine, tailoring stripped of structure, color used as the whole outfit, and jackets that cinch instead of swamp.

Saint Laurent went all in on gold, and I am not mad at it.

Anthony Vaccarello staged the collection under the Eiffel Tower, beneath oversized chandeliers, in what was widely read as a possible farewell after a decade at the house. Almost everything was gold: crinkled metallic sahariennes and trenches, gilt brocade jackets and trousers, metallic lace cocktail dresses, broken up by classic Saint Laurent black.

The wearable version is not a head-to-toe lamé suit. It is one metallic or brocade jacket with denim and flat shoes, or a gold scarf against black. That is opulence a normal person can leave the house in. The rest is theater, and theater is fine, as long as you understand you will be the one paying for the chandelier.

IMG_3027-rr.jpg

Dior made the New Look weightless

At the Tuileries, Jonathan Anderson rebuilt Dior’s Bar jacket and full skirts in chiffon, silk mousseline, Chantilly lace, and gauze, with pinstripe and tweed effects printed onto sheer fabric. Tiny layered circle skirts, ribbon tailoring, pastel florals, striped shirting, and pajama pieces sat next to gardening clogs, which is a sentence I did not expect to type about Dior.

The idea to steal is the one I would actually wear. A soft jacket. A skirt that moves. One decorative thing, not twelve. Sometimes safe and pretty is exactly right. This is that, with the bones still visible.

IMG_3028-rr.jpg

IMG_3030-rr.jpg

Balenciaga answered with color and craft

A year into the job, Pierpaolo Piccioli is still pulling Balenciaga away from the joke this house became. The Summer 2027 show leaned on colorful tailoring, acid-bright City bags, oversized cummerbunds, capes, and dense stitching that turned a white shirt into a fitted waist and peplum.

Elsewhere, Stella McCartney built an ocean collection with floaty fabrics, bubble hems, wave motifs, and dolphin prints. Victoria Beckham went for liberation via sheer georgette dresses, open-arm volumes, and oversized suits with wide trousers. Hermès, under Nadège Vanhée, closed the weekend with airy knits and slit skirts.

IMG_3031-rr.jpg

IMG_3032-rr.jpg

Outside the tents

Paris has been warm, high 20s Celsius, so the pavements skipped heavy coats. What showed up anyway is the October wardrobe: blouson jackets with a cinched waist, balloon and cargo pants, dark-rinse denim, animal print, pinstripes, and red layered over pastels.

Five formulas worth copying before the week ends:
• A blouson or leather bomber over a sweater, with cargo pants and heels.
• Balloon pants, a white tee, an oversized jacket, ballet flats.
• Head-to-toe plaid, kept sleek rather than costume.
• One animal-print coat as the whole outfit.
• A cropped jacket with high-rise trousers, so the proportion stays balanced.

IMG_3033-rr.jpg

What will actually stick

Gold and brocade as a single statement piece. Sheer or fluid tailoring instead of rigid power dressing. Color worn loudly, not as an accent. And the blouson as the jacket of the season, sportier than a barn coat and easier than a bomber.

Thanks, Piper!

To start the concert, the conductor walked onto the stage, the orchestra rose, and played "The Star-Spangled Banner" (this was not listed on the program).

Two people in the row in front of me refused to stand - at intermission I got a good look at them, and they were trannies. Portland.

Seems to me that at the range that counter-drone was demonstrated, a 12 gauge shotgun loaded with bird shot would have been effective, too. An aerial mortar with a small bursting charge, loaded with thousands of little coils of 1/8" Mylar tape (as used in tape cassettes). Create a curtain of dangling threads to tangle a drone's props.

89 Looks like Skylark Drones is based in India, which is better than CHYna, but I wonder where their manufacturing happens. Nifty concept though and I hope someone here develops a local version.

People's eyes are naturally drawn to pretty faces.

And people's eyes are naturally drawn to happy, smiling faces.

So if you're a pretty person whose job is to make people look at what you're wearing, and not at your pretty face, then you make faces like those.

Catalog/print models can get away with looking pleasant, because you can look at a picture as long as you want. Runway models have to look like they just spent six hours at the DMV.

I have a niece named Abigail Grace, which was such an obvious substitution for Chantilly Lace that I sang her that song for many years when she was a little girl.

She thought I was the "genius uncle" to write and perform such a funny song ... just for her.

She was disappointed when I told her (around age 10) that I had just changed an old song that was written before I was even born.

She came back about 30 minutes later with a big smile on her face, and told me, "Don't worry, I won't tell anybody."

She is still a peach of a girl, and we attended her wedding last spring.

Haven't been back in a number of years, honestly have no desire, but for a lot of years I was all over Europe on business. You could see this coming years ago. During the last Tory government I was invited by a defence minister. . . . I was flattered though. I brought along a copy of Imperial Military Geography, I think 1935 edition, my point being that you must decide the war for which you are preparing and then take stock of your resources and that is exactly what the people who won WW2 did.

I said that you must not assume that some other power was going to deliver capability you needed but did not possess organically. That included assumptions about the USA and other powers. A nation state like Britain had to start from an honest calculation of its resources and capabilities relative to its interests and capabilities.

As of 2026 this seems pretty obvious. At the time, the minister’s political advisor sat at his shoulder rolling his eyes at practically everything I said like I was an escapee from a lunatic asylum. The minister, a political man, shook my hand warmly and I’ve never spoken to a minister again.

The moral of the story is not that the minister and his advisor was stupid. They were blind, but it’s a kind of blindness that afflicts smart people .......

154 Wacky story on UK DM about pnemonic plague in Russia. White House is "watching it."

From the little I have read, a woman (no dead) was in a bio lab and "broke a test tube containing pneumonic plague." As someone said, she would have been in her bio outfit and should have been ok. Shipilovia is Patient Zero.

Apparently this bacteria is supposedly treatable with correct antibiotics. Approx 200 people exposed. FSB units (fomer KGB) with ambulances of exposed people, so some thinking they (Russia) are treating this as a nationla security issue.

On the bright side (?) this is endemic in that part of the world. And thus no biggie except for the dead woman who broke a test tube in the bio lab.

Honestly not true. Look at many major cities in red states. Are Houston, Dallas or Austin bastions of MAGA extremism? The same dynamic plays out almost everywhere and people are kidding themselves if they think it doesn't.

States where large urban areas can overwhelm the rest of the population go blue. That's how Georgia became a blueish state. It's not about northern locusts as much as some like to tell themselves, it's about the urban corruption.

I think the elite Eurotrash class figures only care about themselves and their own families and don't give a damn about their own countries. Part and parcel of socialism thinking. My guess is Euros were mildly surprised that the US won the Cold War otherwise many of those elites at the time would and were sucking up to the Commies until the near end.

And US CIA and AID are partly to blame. We financed much of the global left supporting socialists and leftists that were not USSR style communists. Bill Colby and other CIA agent memoirs are full of US sliding money under the table to support leftist assholes even against our own putative allies like in Italy.

Their manager after he weaseled them away from Apple and the Beatles ended up screwing up the band so much that Pete Hamm saw no other alternative than killing himself. Another one of the band members did the same thing a few years later. The manager got the bulk of their money, put enormous pressure on them to produce hit songs in far too short of a time, and their band's individual royalties were not getting paid to them.

Meanwhile the manager did just fine for himself as Badfinger disintegrated. Similar story to John Fogerty and Creedence debacle.

He did pretty damn well; he basically took a new band Wings to mega fame doing songs very similar to what he did in the Beatles.

OTOH, Lennon was not really the hitmaker out of that duo and if you notice, you get plenty of people covering songs by McCartney but only a few of Lennon's. And that is in part because Lennon songs covered by other artists don't sound quite right. And most of Lennon's post Beatles work is dreck and not that popular until his very last album when he decided to do songs rather than messaging in songs.

228 Our troubles in the US is because people keep electing socialists and down right communists. It's these people who let third world thugs into our country.

The socialists promise the FSA everything their tubby, greedy hearts could wish for.

But the problem is the invaders cost less in bribes to get their votes.

So the FSA votes for FS, then is amazed when inflation and the increase share of FS going to the invaders means they get less then before.

But the FSA has an answer to this. Elect more socialists because obviously if their were more in the government the FSA would get more FS.

Definitely Paul's as John would say. If you can track down a copy, Playboy had a reporter do a very long interview with John just before he was murdered. During the Double Fantasy album sessions, and in part of the interview sessions, John went down the list with songs discussing each Beatle's song as to which one wrote it and contributions if any by the other. If anything, he was not insulting about McCartney's real talent but admitted that he would never even think of writing a song like When I'm 64.

Only time John got a little pissed is when some of his recorded song work with the Beatles had technical problems like Strawberry Fields or Across the Universe. At times John thought McCartney rushed through John's songs but spent way too much time in the studio tweaking Maxwell's Silver Hammer for example.

John got a bit nasty early in the 70's and had a substance/drink problem. National Lampoon's Radio Dinner has probably the funniest and most devastating comedic take on his output at the time in Magical Misery Tour. Used John's actual words from interviews sung over the melody. Tony Hendra channels Lennon in the song.

Hysterically funny if you can remember the era.

I've told this story before but I was in Brussels over a decade later for a conference. Left my hotel at lunch to go for a walk and find a pack of cigarettes and unknowingly wandered into a muslim neighborhood that wasn't far from the hotel.

Walked into a local shop and asked for a pack of Marlboro reds and the Arab behind the counter asked "What are you doing here, man?". An older guy in the store walked me out of the neighborhood. Nice old guy. I bet he took shit for helping me.

October 25. The day after another blithering idiot hopefully gets curb stomped at the polls. I a, of course talking about Premier Eby in BC, whose obsessive devotion is Trump.

Mr. Eby is running against Trump but seems to have forgotten he is the Premier of BC and should perhaps worry about BC. Not to mention he called an election two years early to take advantage of the split on the Right, he being the neo-Marxist NDP.

In so doing he has pissed off a lot of people and I am here for it. I just wish he carried out his threat to block the ALCAN. That would have made my day.

299 Barrell/balloon pants, the gold obsession, high waisted paints, peplum waists, all over animal print dressing, and more.
(Were there also Members Only-like jackets in some designers' lines? If not, soon.)

301 Cow Demon I am guardedly optimistic that both Michigan and Minnesota may turn our way, at least this cycle. Women like Amy Klobuchar and Peggy Flanagan and men like Al-Sayed are wooing the muslim vote and I think that sane republicans and democrats both are going to push back hard over this. Their winning strategy is to capture the white liberal women and the muslim populace, I am not sure that they can win with that. I think that some traditional democrats are going to sit this one out, at least I hope so.

Happy Birthday Brooklyn Native, may I buy you a birthday drink?

As much as I am not about defeatism, MN is swilling the Kool Aid, I fear. Klobuchar would not have done that if she didn’t think she could get away with it. MI? I am more hopeful.

304 How is it that couture gets uglier and uglier every year, but never goes back to style and class? Honestly, how many plaids should one person wear at a time? I would say, one, at most. And fake fabrics that are gauzy but printed? How gauche. A peplum makes sense on a dress, but hardly on a blouse. And poorly fitted garments are always just... sloppy.

But what do I know? I buy most of my clothes at Costco anymore.

Close the Alcan? I would expect that would start a shooting war. The US built that road, uses that road, and requires that road be kept open, even during the covid crap. If they don't care for Lake America, just imagine how they would like the US military running tanks down the Alcan to keep it open.

306 Mostly jeans and t-shirts here. I have some nice tunics also, but those are for *going out* which I don't do anymore. Sad!

My sentiments exactly. He threatened this soon after Trump 2.0 started. I was thinking “oh pretty please, DO IT!!!”. But I think in the end someone made a phone call to him and reminded him that by treaty the road remains open as the U.S. pays for it. Still, it would have been fun to watch him try, and suddenly the U.S. Army - either USARAK or units from the lower 48 - went barreling down the ALCAN to make our point.

308 tcn, we used to ruthlessly mock my Uncle Joe who could combine the widest array of plaids, I hope that he is laughing in Heaven right now. He was a tireless warrior for the unborn.

Well hi JQ, I was missing you.

I just cannot get over how it is cool to go out in public looking like you just woke up or are getting ready for bed. It’s not cool. You just look like a total slob or a bum.
