Sonny Hostin is Beaming With Pride About Being the Holdout Juror That Got a Literal Cannibal Killer Off

A literal cannibal killer killed and then butchered victims and served their meat to the homeless.

That's not a pitch for an A24 horror movie. That really happened in New York City in the 1990s. The killer was called "the Butcher of Tompkins Square Park." I used to live around there (but I have an alibi).

Bursting with what David Strom calls "main character syndrome" -- the belief of narcissists that they are the star of the show called "reality" and that everything they do is justified and good because they're the main character of the show and therefore the hero -- Sonny Hostin glowed as she Karensplained that she was the lone holdout juror during the Butcher's trial and spared him a murder conviction.

Oh, she also says that Lindsay Clancy is not guilty because of course she does.

Hostin left no doubt about where she stood. "The insanity defense has been around in Massachusetts for 182 years, so I think it's well established," she said. "And I thought, absolutely, she was not criminally responsible by reason of insanity."
Then Hostin explained where her conviction came from.
Before she went to law school, Hostin sat on the jury in the early 1990s murder trial of Daniel Rakowitz, better known as "The Butcher of Tompkins Square Park." Rakowitz killed his roommate, a Swiss dancer named Monika Beerle, and cut up her body in a bathtub. He then cooked her remains into a soup, ate some of it, and handed it out to homeless people in the New York City park.
A New York Times article on the case described a lone holdout who "was principally responsible ... for preventing them from returning a guilty verdict."
"That was me," Hostin said. "And it was because I saw clearly that he was psychotic."
Then she offered her own version of the killing, and it sounded more like a closing argument for the defense than a confession of regret.

Alyssa Farah Griffin couldn't let her finish. "And you got this guy off?!" she asked, clearly horrified.
"That's how much I believe in the insanity defense," Hostin said before wrapping up her account: "And he fed her body parts to the unhoused."
And she's proud he got him a not guilty verdict.

My grandmother was an absolute saint who endured nearly unbelievable things in her life, but was always peaceful and sweet and concerned for others. My mother was the template for a stay at home mom and wife. Her sisters were good women I admired. They all treated me well and with kindness but discipline and checked me when I needed teaching.

The cannibal thing, the clancy thing, the trantifa assassins, etc, etc, etc... I used to be of the 'well, there's theoretically demons but they're all in hell, the early peoples interpreted regular things as demons' camp. I've been persuaded by events to move to the 'there are literal (*probably* intangible and invisible) demons walking the Earth, possession is real, but try to remember sometimes it's just a chemical imbalance and those can sometimes be treated' camp.

One was the most chilling and sad thing I have ever seen. The guy had killed a half dozen people before he was caught and was rather obviously drugged up in the interview. I don't think anyone's ever given me grief for it. Once in a while some big badass thug looking brother will give a big dumb childish smile in disbelief that some cracker would just nonchalantly hold the door for a guy like him like it's no big deal.

Occasionally I'll get stuck playing Vestibule Chicken with another person who thinks the same as me on the other set of doors. That's usually worth a good laugh with a stranger, too.

Turns out the local lesbian and dyke association didn't appreciate that very much and bitched that they didn't need a big strong man to hold the door for weak little ladies.

213 My own personal opinion is that anyone who kills another individual purposely (not in self-defense, or for valid safety reasons) is INSANE to some extent. Indifference to life is insanity. And, I don't see insanity as an exception to criminality.

This includes someone like a father whose daughter was molested by some character, and the father hunts him down an kills him. That is a crime, and I don't subscribe to the mentality that circumstances lessen the punishment. No free passes.

I don't even give a free pass to someone with a brain tumor that disallows determination of right an wrong. You do the act in whatever capacity...you do the time.

Location of the incarceration is another topic. If you are beyond the threshold of mentally ill, you serve your time in a mental facility until you are deemed "better" and then it's off to regular prison (much like Alaska's State laws).

I'm sure they can, but know it is an image and not another cat. I had a cat that would ignore his image but would sometimes try and 'dig' at the edges of the mirror to get into that extra room on the other side.

When I had videos on a tv screen more a couple of the cats would peek behind the screen to make sure nothing real was back there once in a while.

I realize that many homeless are mentally ill and/or addicted to drugs and like roughing it (as the Brits say).

As a RN in the ED I saw this. Free meds (antibiotics) and a hotel room (with prostitutes) for a few days. They refused a house as they had to do chores and were on lists. The ED is a revolving door for the homeless.

I have urges to yell out my car window at our one scruffy guy on his corner with the trappings and a cell phone. I want to know why he has a cell phone yet needs a few bucks. I control these urges as I am always with my husband when I see the guy in an affluent area.

I never see anyone giving him money, thank goodness. He needs to go to the city with the rest of them and soup kitchens, needles, etc, yada. Or simply a bus ticket to MA. I might ask him this one day when the moon is full.

Hold a door because it's a gesture of service. Say Sir or Ma'am to everyone because it's an acknowledgement that you're willing to be of service regardless of who they are.

Conversely, any formality that has nothing to do with the other person's humanity is really not "manners', anyway, is it? It's just a fad or some kind of cheap grace.
