British Medical Journal: The FDA and CDC Used a Faulty Algorithm to Understate Vaccine Injuries. When One Researcher Pointed Out the Flaw, She Was Told to Mind Her Own Business.

I'm not willing to assume "just an accidental oversight."

In fact, I'm very much assuming enemy action.

Adam Urato, MD
@AdamUrato1

Must-read investigative article in The BMJ.

Clear safety signals of Covid vaccine harms (in red below) were missed by FDA & CDC by using a flawed method where the harms went undetected.

"The agency's PRR analyses--examined by The BMJ--show that hundreds of types of adverse events met the agency's criteria for a signal" (including myocarditis, pericarditis, Bell's palsy, and tinnitus.)

The FDA doctor who alerted them to the flawed safety system was muzzled. "She was told, with diplomatic flourish, to back off."

vaersalgorithms.jpg

Above, the images show a correct analysis of vaccine harms, showing lots of red flags.

The images on the right show the FDA's and CDC's "accidental" understatement of vaccine injuries -- all green flags.

Whoops!

Whoopsie!

From the BMJ:

US officials knew covid vaccine safety system was flawed--but turned aside the FDA doctor who alerted them

US officials embraced an algorithm for detecting signals of harm from mRNA covid-19 vaccines that they knew was broken and suppressed efforts to fix it.

David Willman reports:

Before covid-19 vaccines were rolled out to Americans in December 2020, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) assured healthcare providers that the agency was on the lookout for any harmful reactions. A key part of the CDC's strategy was its Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), which receives such reports after vaccination.

"It is the nation's frontline system for monitoring vaccine safety and the early warning system for detecting possible vaccine safety problems," said Tom Shimabukuro, deputy director of CDC's Immunization Safety Office, on 30 October 2020.

Millions of people were to be vaccinated each week, and the CDC would rely on statistical "data mining" of the VAERS database to quickly identify any safety signals in need of further probing.

Two well recognised, separate algorithms were to be used. The first involved calculating "proportional reporting ratios" (PRRs), which sought to identify types of reactions reported to VAERS disproportionately or more frequently than background rates. The second data mining technique, called "empirical bayesian," was to be provided by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which operated VAERS jointly with the CDC, and the two agencies planned to share and discuss results.

But in a little noticed September 2022 letter, CDC director Rochelle Walensky said that the agency did not perform PRR analyses for signals until 2022. This was more than a year into the vaccine rollout and was intended, she wrote, "to corroborate" the FDA's approach. Instead of using the PRR and empirical bayesian methods jointly during the pandemic, Walensky explained that both the CDC and FDA instead "chose to rely" on empirical bayesian, which she characterised as "a more robust technique."

It doesn't appear to be "more robust." What it appears to be is deliberately crippled to hide vaccine injuries.

The BMJ, however, has found that the FDA's algorithm was mathematically compromised by the deluge of covid vaccine adverse event reports--resulting in a near total loss of signal detection sensitivity for the new mRNA vaccines made by Pfizer and Moderna. Top FDA officials were warned internally of this problem in early 2021, and the official who headed its pharmacovigilance division for vaccines commented more than two years later to his CDC and FDA colleagues: "We were aware of this [data mining] limitation before and during the pandemic." Government documents also show that CDC officials were informed during rollout of the vaccines--on multiple occasions.

Yet instead of fixing the safety deficiency--or shutting down the unreliable signal detection system--officials continued to rely on the FDA's broken algorithm. The officials also cited the absence of signals when assuring clinicians and the public of the vaccines' safety.

At the FDA, managers went a step further by silencing the career drug safety officer who had repeatedly brought the deficiency to their attention and had offered an updated algorithm intended to fix it. As a result, Americans received unfounded assurances of the safety of the most widely used covid vaccines and were denied prompt warnings of potential harms, The BMJ's investigation found.

...

"I'm perplexed that myocarditis isn't alerting"

In late February 2021, CDC and FDA officials received notice of "a large number of reports of myocarditis, particularly in young people," after vaccination. The warnings of myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) and pericarditis (inflammation of the pericardium) came from the Israeli Ministry of Health. In a private meeting five weeks later, the Israelis informed a CDC convened covid vaccine safety committee that two of the 77 vaccinated people with myocarditis or pericarditis had died.

The next week, the same committee heard from the Pentagon's Defense Health Agency, which reported a "cluster of cases" of myocarditis among male US military members.

US public health officials remained sceptical of a link to the new mRNA vaccines. "We have not seen a signal [for myocarditis], and we've actually looked intentionally for the signal in the over 200 million doses we've given," CDC director Walensky told reporters.

By May 2021, VAERS had received hundreds of reports of myocarditis and pericarditis after covid vaccinations, and the CDC began alerting healthcare professionals. While the agency was still unsure of a causal relationship, it decided to alert physicians more broadly through a "clinical considerations" web posting.

But oncologist Peter Marks, who as director of the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research was the agency's top covid vaccine regulator, objected. He questioned the CDC's imminent website announcement, emailing Walensky directly, highlighting the lack of any safety signal from the government's own surveillance: "We still have concerns here [at the FDA] if myocarditis and pericarditis have not actually signaled . . . Can you help me understand why we are doing this when pediatricians and others in the community already seem to be aware?"

...

Still, VAERS reports continued to mount, with myocarditis attracting the greatest attention. In a June 2021 public presentation, the CDC's Shimabukuro showed that, for young males (age 12-24), VAERS had received between 29 and 347 times more myocarditis and pericarditis reports than the agency expected based on background incidence rates. In a public statement that day, the CDC dubbed myocarditis an "extremely rare side effect."

Government records show that, the day before his presentation, Shimabukuro had received the FDA's latest data mining report--and it continued to show no signal. "I'm perplexed that myocarditis isn't alerting for either of the mRNA vaccines," Shimabukuro emailed a colleague.

Early warnings

The BMJ can reveal that the FDA's algorithm failed to signal a potential relationship between mRNA covid vaccination and myocarditis, pericarditis, Bell's palsy, tinnitus, and other reported disorders owing to a flaw in the detection methodology--a flaw that senior officials declined to rectify.

If I understand the next section, I believe they are saying the FDA's and CDC's faulty algorithm compared covid "vaccine" VAERS reports to all VAERS reports, and would only flag the "vaccines" as problematic if they showed many more VAERS reports than all other reports.

But the problem is -- and this should have been obvious -- that 90% of the public was "vaccinated" with the covid "vaccines," so if you compared "vaccine" incident rates to all reported incident rates -- they were practically the same number. The FDA and CDC used an algorithm to detect a covid "vaccine" signal against the sea of all other incidents, but covid "vaccines" were so common, numbering the many tens of millions, that covid "vaccine" incidents were the sea they were checking against.

It's like a Venn diagram where the circles almost completely overlap. If you're comparing "vaccine" incidents to "background" incidents but "vaccine" incidents make up 90% of the background, everytime you check, you'll find that "vaccine" incidents are very similar to "background" incidents, because "background" incidents are made up mostly of vaccine "incidents."

And thus, they kept claiming: We don't see any pronounced spike of "vaccine" incidents compared to all other incidents, without telling you that the background data they were checking against was mostly covid "vaccine" data.

The problem arose because, in the first year of the rollout, almost all the reports coming into VAERS--more than 90% of 1.1 million--were for the mRNA covid shots, dwarfing vaccines for all other diseases. This meant that analysing the safety of one vaccine, for example Pfizer's product, involved comparing it to other vaccines, which were overwhelmingly limited to Moderna's product. But if both mRNA vaccines elevated the risk of an adverse event like myocarditis in roughly equal amounts, the "observed" frequency and "expected" frequency would be similar, resulting in no automated alert. The statistical phenomenon is known as "masking."

And I wonder if this "masking" effect was accidental, or intended.

Imagine if you wanted to see if covid was affecting ethnic Chinese people more than non-ethnic Chinese people. In China. So you compare the rates of ethnic Chinese people in China to all people in China, and find that there is no difference between ethnic Chinese people and all people in China.

But your data for "all" people in China is 95% ethnic Chinese! Of course you found no difference in the rates of infection! You're comparing Data Set A to Data Set A + 5% other data and finding the two are barely different at all!

No more than 5% different, in fact! Not statistically significant!

Szarfman and DuMouchel, who earned his PhD at Yale and by 2010 became chief statistician at Oracle Health Sciences, judged that the unique circumstances of the pandemic meant that the FDA's approach was missing safety signals...

"Regarding the NYT article, I am quite concerned," Szarfman emailed Marks two days later. She wrote that the agency should be "clamoring to fix this problem." < Szarfman concluded, "Let me know if you want Bill DuMouchel and I to discuss our proposal for more effective monitoring, including the need to use an updated algorithm by DuMouchel for data mining spontaneous reports."

...

Marks and his staff, however, declined to alter the FDA's existing approach--and agency officials did not publicly warn of the deficiency with finding safety signals. When Szarfman continued to press the matter, she was told, with diplomatic flourish, to back off.

That email, sent on 7 May 2021, by Craig Zinderman, associate director for medical policy in FDA's Office of Biostatistics and Epidemiology, began: "Good Afternoon Ana, Thank you again for talking with us back in March about your work exploring new data mining approaches . . . We are writing to kindly ask you to please hold off on creating and sending data mining reports and analyses using covid-19 vaccine AE [adverse event] data."

I would say "incredible" but we have seen again and again that 90% of the output from government, from NGOs, from academia, from corporations is pure fraud on the public.

14 The thing about this:

-vaccine manufacturers could offload a costly, dangerous R&D project that did not work out for it's intended purpose at premium, government subsidized prices.

-Doctors got kickbacks. Politicians got kickbacks. Bureaucrats got kickbacks.

The truly astounding thing is I am not sure there is a good historical parallel. This is a nexus in a lot of different things: widespread testing of a dangerous medication. Government covered it up. This is far worse than even the Tuskegee Syphilis thing.

Maybe Thalidomide? Mercury for Syphilis treatment?

But I can't think of one where it was a bad treatment but the government not only covered it up, but tried to wholesale force it on everyone.

Trump pushed for a vaccine in Operation Warp Speed, knowing FULL WELL, after being cured of it in a f*cking weekend, that it wasn't necessary. He pushed to bypass all the standard regulatory guidelines so he could have it before his term ended. It was ready, but they didn't want him credited with it. But no one blames Biden for any of it. And he forced it on the masses.

69 44 There is a serious need seen by the .gov and pHarm for a "gene to vaccine" technology. Unfortunately what they have is an auto-immune inducing technology, that has the side benefit of impairing the body's ability to identify and destroy cancerous cells, and is enabled by LNPs that appear to exacerbate cancer metastasis.
It also doesn't seem to do much for preventing diseases.

It'll be close.

I think Cooper should be considered the underdog because of registration changes and the end of Cooper's term combined with the fact that "popular" governors of the wrong party lose federal elections all the time (Larry Hogan in MD recently, for example).

But, turnout differentials are a thing, and it could be enough to undo the 3 point win Trump had 2 years ago.

We'll see.

86 They are doing something very similar in many studies that use national health data to show no injuries. In those, they use the national database comparing injuries fro all people vaccinated, to the general public. The problem is that they are only looking at people who had interaction with the health system (retrospective study) but that excludes anyone with no vaccine, who did not get sick.

I can go into more detail if asked, but there are a bunch of studies in Europe considered the "gold standard" in proving the vaccines are safe, and they are all total bullshit.

This is very similar to an issue RFK keeps bringing up -- they do this for all vaccines -- they compare to another vaccine to verify safety and efficacy. RFK wants a control and has been harping on about that for many years. The industry does not want a control because they claim it is unnecessary but in reality, they are just using a bad product to mask for the net iteration.

To me, I wonder if we should just strip down the vaccine schedule to the bare necessities and then go with normal palliative care for everything else to strengthen the immune system.

162 I do think the government estimates of how many people got the clot shot are significantly off, perhaps by 50%

When Mayor Wu was elected in Boston she threatened vaxports to go restaurants.

Government stats said 90% of Bostonians and 80% of Massholes were clot shotted.

She had an AMA right after this - every comment was demanding she resign (which points pretty strongly at voter fraud too), but she planned to go ahead until the Boston restaurant lobby group told her to expect most restaurants would go bankrupt if she did

Now remember at the time the FNM was screaming unclot shotted people would give you COVID even if you had the clot shot and that you couldn't get it from "the vaccinated". SO it would be fair to expect they'd get more of the 90% then they'd lose of the 10% doesn't it?

Unless, of course that number was significantly lower then 90%...

The CDC says it reduces flu symptoms which cuts against the actual concrete mortality data which says it does not.

Non-CDC data says the impact is real but extremely minimal which would bridge the gap between those two data sets if you assume the CDC is cherry picking for higher effectiveness.

So my take? It isn't worth the time to go to your DR and expose yourself to likely other flu carriers but the shot itself won't harm you like the clot shot.

Pharma has gotten very good at stuff like this, exaggerating the benefits and suppressing the risks with a lot of statistical razzle-dazzle.

Basically, the don't look at what they don't want to look at, and hide that in all the razzle-dazzle.

See the lasted on Tamiflu. Turns out that actually does way more harm than good for patients very sick and hospitalized with flu. After all these years, the finally did a proper study, and found more of the Tamiflu treated group died than a non-Tamiflu group. And it was like pulling teeth to finally get that study done.

Whatley is as responsible for the turnaround of the RNC in 2024 as anyone else.

I remember establishment friendly voices against his appointment to cochair the RNC because he was "obsessed with the steal" of 2020 and wouldn't actually do anything to win other than complain about past sins.

There have also been some changes at the state level, like new election laws and forcing all police agencies in the state to participate in the 287g program with DHS, which should help drive out some illegals and suppress the 6% who probably vote every election, both passed over governor Stein's veto because the NC state legislature has a veto proof GOP majority.

This is actually the legal attack that needs to be made.

The shots were never vaccines, they were gene modification therapies... and since they are NOT vaccines, should not be covered under the law that protects vaccine makers from lawsuits.

A Bureaucrat changing a definition on a website, does not change a LEGAL definition... which would be the definition used when they passed the legislation.

It's easy to get the Antarctica conspiracies all mixed up. You've got your plain aliens and/or Nazi bases there, with the pyramids under the ice and all that stuff.

Then you've got the Hollow Earth where the big hole to get inside is down there somewhere (and also up around the north pole too).

And then you've got the Flat Earth ice wall stuff. And they all sort of get all that mixed up themselves. Even the Flat Earthers sometimes have holes in the Flat Pizza doing stuff.

That's a pretty vacuous application of the law. The law is supposed to set rules. Any law including the word "infinite" without defining each and every applicable party is contradictive to the purpose of the law or, more specifically, suggests that no law was required.

I guess I'm a reprobate, because my first instinct was to decide how such an open ended application can be abused. Techincally, you could indentify as the most reprehensible, bigoted, racist, disgusting "gender" of your own concoction and claim to be protected.

What's his name? Rogers or something?

As did DeForrest Kelly. Imagine my surprise as a wee lad seeing Dr. McCoy in an old black and white western on Saturday morning TV.

380 I've read that the FDA receives nearly half of its funding from private industry, among which are Pfizer and Moderna...

Nearly half? I'll bet that it's way, way, way higher than that - that there is a lot of dark money flowing from Big Pharma into the FDA coffers, and especially directly to the bank accounts of the FDA top staff; that their government salaries don't begin to compare with their payola from Big Pharma.

Admiral Byrd and Operation Highjump back in '46-'47 play big in all these conspiracies.

He went down there either to fight the Nazis, or fight the aliens. Or he thought they were Nazis but turned out to be aliens, or vice-versa, or both, a Nazi-Alien alliance.

Or, he went down there to find the entrance to the Hollow Earth. Or he went down there to go over the Ice Wall encircling the Flat Earth, and explore all the Secret Continents beyond.

Saw the fellah who played Major Hochstetter in a western once. And of course, Oliver Hardy was in a movie with Duke Wayne.

387 Whatley has not run a good campaign at all. He started off with the "working across the aisle and fixing the gridlock in Washington" play. What an idiot.
=========================
The single worst campaign idea ever. Voters want candidates who say "I'll kick them in the balls", not "We're buddies"

390 Any summer spend is on upping name recognition.

It's fall spend where negative ads work best.
Posted by: TheJamesMadison, discovering British horror with Hammer Films at September 18, 2026 01:18 PM (+a7XK)

-------------

It's been all negative for the past two months from Whatley (SLC Pac). Whatley started with the work across the aisle ads then moved to the 'I'm not a politician, just a regular Joe in my truck" ads. And that was about it. You go to his website and his issues page is pretty good, but damn, can't he put a few of those on an ad?

Now there are Cooper ads saying he isn't stupid like Whatley who thinks there is no inflation, then queue a video of Whatley saying, "there isn't any inflation".

391 Years ago the info I found in 2020 is no longer on the Internet. Regarding why mRNA, in the first trials of vaccines in the 1990's (I think) stalled. No longer found.

The search of "does mRNA change DNA" meets with a resounding no in 2026. I read information that it did in 2020.

My own guess is to now cover for all the former "rare" cancers being seen in young people. Rare brain cancers. Rare appendix cancer as well (a wide range of rare colon cancers). The first boy I loved, a year before I met bf/husband, died of one of these that was 1:1million rare... in 5mo.

I think pericarditis, etc, in the young and fit was due to their robust immune response to the foreign vaccine in their bodies. Similar to the cytokine storm deaths the influenza caused in 1918.

The vax we took as a family was J&J due to air travel. No problems. I kept our sons/DIL and future DIL from taking the mRNA due to, in a normal world, 10yrs of human trial to ok a vaccine. I read about the impact on DNA.

If UV sunlight changes DNA in humans to give skin cancer, this supports the theory that a messenger RNA virus could do the same.

The mRNA treatment for specific cancers is worth a try for some.
