When the other shoe drops

California legislators recently passed a "Stop Nick Shirley Act" to keep "unauthorized" reporters from reporting fraud by, say, illegal immigrants.

Shirley is fighting back.

Meanwhile, he is reporting on fraud related to California's High-speed rail project. Including, right now, unauthorized travel and entertainment expenses.

There is only a little overlap with issues of illegal immigration. There is more overlap with the issue of fraud as Shirley's second shoe is dropping. Others are also dropping a few shoes.

California's High-Speed Rail Authority paid nearly $600,000 in unallowable travel reimbursements to outside consultants while keeping a poor record to justify them, a state investigation found.

Greenland

greenland cs.jpg

Clayton S. Wood, yesterday on FB

This guy is pretty sensible. Does his take align with yours?

Denmark just gave Trump permanent security control over Greenland.

Today the United States signed what Trump is calling an "Infinite Life" Agreement with Denmark and Greenland. Permanent US control over Greenland's security. No adversary base, presence, or sensitive investment allowed there without US approval, ever. A large American military buildup starting immediately. And according to Trump, at no cost to the United States.

Rewind to January. Trump was floating outright annexation and refusing to rule out military force. Denmark's prime minister called the idea "completely absurd" and reminded everyone that Greenland was covered by NATO's collective defense guarantee. Eighty five percent of Greenlanders opposed joining the United States. Thousands marched in Copenhagen and Nuuk in the largest protest in Greenland's history. Every serious voice in Europe said this would never happen, that Trump was embarrassing himself, that Denmark would never fold.

Nine months later, the United States has what it wanted. Not annexation but something arguably more useful: permanent security control, indefinite basing rights, and a guarantee that no rival power ever gets a foothold on the most strategically located island on the planet, all without having to govern eighty thousand Greenlanders or fight a NATO ally over sovereignty.

The White House has not published the actual text yet, so how "permanent" is worked out with a future administration is a fair question. But the shape of what just happened is not in dispute. A goal that was universally mocked as fantasy in January is a signed agreement in September. Imagine that we move fast on rare earths and military presence, the outcry if a subsequent administration tried to help Russia and/or China by leaving would be immense.

This is not an isolated story. It is part of a pattern.

Tomorrow morning I am posting a longer piece walking through everything this administration has actually accomplished in foreign policy over the last two years. Panama. The Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Malacca. Venezuela. Cuba. Greenland. Different chokepoints and flashpoints around the world, outcomes that critics called impossible when Trump first mentioned them, all wins now sitting on the board.

If you still think none of this matters, you are not making a serious argument. You are just unable to admit something good happened.

Stephen Green posted this:

WEEKEND

The Week In Pictures: Sydney Sweeney Goes AI Edition
This was one of those weeks when a lot of the main stories–the meme stories, anyway–are holdovers. The Lindsay Clancy trial continued to reverberate. The 9/11 commemoration, and liberal responses thereto, went on. Canada remained in the news by proposing to become an associate member of the European Union. Which makes sense, given that Canada has heretofore been an associate member of the Western Hemisphere.

But some stories were new: Sydney Sweeney came under attack because she took off her clothes in service of a marketing campaign, something apparently never before seen in the world of advertising. An anti-AI campaign materialized out of nowhere, much like the COVID panic and global warming. Many were suspicious.

Beyond that, is was, for memesters, bombs away on liberalism, as usual. So here goes: The Week In Pictures, Sydney Sweeney goes AI Edition:

What will you miss as Hollywood goes under?

Hollywood has not been kind to James Woods lately, but he remembers better times:

The greatest detective character created for television, cast with an actor so perfect, so charming, so subtly powerful in the role, it can never be "reimagined."

Thank God.

5 Thank goodness for old TV shows when the few shows we enjoy are in the off season. An oldie I recommend is "Peter Gunn". Good plots, it gets to the point, no wasted dialogue, finished up in 1/2 hour. A lot of interesting and quirky characters and Craig Stevens is superb in as Gunn. A great jazz soundtrack. Only 3 seasons but each season has over 30 episodes.

7 Those "choke points" mentioned in Wood's article? Nearly all of international trade goes through one or more of them.

As we've seen with Hormuz and the Bab-el-Mandab, the narrowest point in the Red Sea, control of "choke points" is critical. Not just for the US.

28 Per Grok:
Yes. In early July 2026, an account called @MAGAts_Exposed posted a thread highlighting old 2017 allegations against James Woods, including Amber Tamblyn’s claim that he approached her and a friend at a Hollywood diner when she was 16, invited them to Vegas, and replied “even better” when she told him her age. Woods has denied the story since it first circulated.

The post gained traction among critics, and Woods made the account protected on July 9. Outlets noted the timing and speculated it was a response to the renewed pile-on. A few days later he posted that he was “taking a breather from the madness” and that he couldn’t listen to “another lefty lunatic” for one more second. In August he added that Democratic “bot swarms” were making the feed unpleasant and that locking the account gave him some quiet.

The account has stayed protected since then (it still shows as protected in mid-September posts). The underlying 2017 dispute also produced a Teen Vogue letter and a New York Times op-ed from Tamblyn at the time; those older pieces were simply recirculated in July.

All the more reason to put the Petraeus Plan into effect -- Putin's near miss on him at the Polish train station means that he's close to the mark -- and under the right condtiions is a better legitimate counterpoint as: President Petraeus -- but he has to WANT IT.

And he really doesn't, but then again, neither did Reagan -- it was Tuttle who convinced Reagan of not only the need, but the reason for him to run.

Personal failings aside, he would be as great as Reagan -- spinmasters being what they are today, if they can make mostly male Hunter Biden appear even moderately sane, such should not be a problem for people who know what they are doing.

But wait! Think of the alternative!

What's happening in California isn't about raw population numbers, it's about population distribution. For those with high incomes who make their money off finance or international sales, it is still a great place in the restricted communities. Also, the nepo and trust fund babies, and those who cater to them have a great time.
Along with that, the low income immigrants with large government support thrive, along with all the Government employees who service them and skim money off the stream flowing to them.

What's missing? The middle class, along with any manufacturing or ordinary productive middle class jobs. California is being hollowed out economically, with big bulges at the top and the bottom and nothing in the middle anymore. It's headed for a crash.

73 CNN, MSNOW, whomever the White House barred, will be back in the press pool next week. A leftist judge (aren't they all?) will strike down the jettisoning of those networks.

Trump I tried it with Jim Acosta and he returned after about a week's absence thanks to our totally leftist judiciary.

It'd be "better" to just quit doing press briefings in person and just e-mail the stuff to them. Then, when they try to twist it.... bring up the original. It doesn't always have to be in person.

74 @MAGAts_Exposed posted a thread highlighting old 2017 allegations against James Woods, including Amber Tamblyn’s claim that he approached her and a friend at a Hollywood diner when she was 16, invited them to Vegas, and replied “even better” when she told him her age. Woods has denied the story since it first circulated.

Amber Tamblyn is married to David Cross, a far-left "comedian," so I give this zero credibility. She's all big into gender equity so one can safely conclude she believes it is perfectly acceptable if not heroic to tell lies in furtherance of the narrative and her cause.

85 Think of any more enticing poems for the younger folk?

I think that I shall never see
A corpse so lovely as a dead commie.

A body whose open mouth is prest
Bleeding against the earth at rest;

A body that looks at worms all day,
And keeps tries to keep the vulture at bay;

A body that may in Summer smell
A smell so bad it smells like hell;

Upon whose rotten flesh snow has lain;
Who quickly dissolves in the rain.

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only we can kill a commie.

102 Ultra-simplified, Servo is correct, CA has been hollowed out socio-economically over the last 3 decades. Well, not exactly hollowed out, but mostly so, with a new unsustainable "middle class" that is pernicious in its effects sort of subbed in for what was a real middle class before.

Government employees, especially "educators" and those in that enormous dysfunctional and voracious black hole of greed. They're the new "middle class". Replacing - but not really - manufacturing, small business, etc, the true base of a real middle class. As noted above, ultra-simplified, but this is a major trend central to the issue.

Relentless persecution of real economic activity, especially small manufacturing ("environmental" nonsense, Cal-OSHA, unions, taxation, etc) has been a key factor. End of Cold War/huge reduction in defense/aerospace in early 90s sort of kicked it off, mass illegal migration (just starting then) devastated several construction trades and started to deform the semi-skilled labor market (hospitality, etc) and was another blow to middle/lower-middle class viability (part-time work, jobs for minor family members).

Dumbing down of the populace (see both "education", and the parents).

In 2010, which was one of the two greatest national partisan political earthquakes in our national history, CA saw ...... no change whatsoever. Not sure even *1* incumbent was defeated, state or national level. One state rep who was most sincerely dead was re-elected.

This sort of confirmed that CA had suffered a total civic collapse. Lots of wheels turning, I have just touched on a few obvious big ones.
