A War for Civilization

Well, it's been quite a week for civilization in the USA. Try scrolling through the posts from the archives here from the past week for a sampling of craziness. Mark Steyn has noticed something, too:

This is my ancient column from that day, composed in the hours that followed, when very little was known. There are passages I would write differently today, and some I would not write at all, but I thought we would re-publish it as is, with the original (Spectator) illustration and headline. It was and is "a war for civilisation", but in ways I did not fully grasp until six months later, standing across the street from a Viennese maternity shop.
So here we are, a generation later, when no jihadist needs to fly planes into western skyscrapers - because, in New York as in London as in other western capitals, we have handed Islam the keys to those skyscrapers. In the excerpts from the flight manifests that appeared over the next few days, I was struck by the name of Christine Hanson of Groton, Massachusetts, a two-year-old girl sitting between her parents on a doomed flight. She was last heard crying in the background during her father's telephone call to her grandparents to report that the stewardess had been stabbed. Christine would be approaching thirty now - and I cannot but feel that the intervening years have dishonoured her memory:

I would suggest that we might look back even further than yesterday's 25th anniversary, and think about what we want to teach the kids (a theme here last week). Ayaan Hirsi Ali has written a piece that reminds us that, while the details had not been worked out, there were people who had plans to attack the West long before 9/11.

What Mohamed Atta Was Trying to Tell Us

After 25 years, it is time for the West to face the true cause of 9/11

In April 1996, more than five years before he steered American Airlines Flight 11 into the North Tower, Mohamed Atta sat in a small Hamburg apartment and wrote his last will and testament. He was 27, an architecture student at the Technical University, the son of a Cairo lawyer, fluent in German, and living comfortably in one of the most affluent societies on earth.
Nothing in his circumstances compelled him to dwell on death. Yet he gave detailed instructions for the handling of his corpse. “I don’t want any women to go to my grave at all during my funeral or on any occasion thereafter,” he wrote. He did not want a pregnant woman, or “a person who is not clean,” to come and say goodbye. The man who washed his body should wear gloves so as not to touch his genitals. He was to be wrapped in three white pieces of unadorned cloth, laid on his right side facing Mecca, and buried “next to good Muslims.” His money was to be divided “according to the Muslim religion as almighty God has asked us to do.”

There is no political program and no mention of foreign policy or economic grievances in the document. There is only a young Muslim man, in a German apartment, arranging to sacrifice his life to Allah in the confidence that Allah will reward his martyrdom in the life to come. The will was witnessed by fellow believers at the al-Quds mosque, where Atta prayed in Arabic, grew his beard, and where, four years later, he would meet the men he would die with.
The document is among the most neglected pieces of evidence from Sept. 11 because it contradicts the explanations of the attack that most Western commentators preferred. Atta was not poor. He was not radicalized by drone strikes that had not yet happened, nor by American support for Israel. He was not in any formal or organizational sense an “Islamist.” Rather, he had an uncompromising and militant commitment to Islam that he was ready to die for.

Yet for 25 years Western elites repeatedly insisted that men like Atta must have been driven by something other than the culture and the faith that provided him with a lens through which his actions seemed both sensible and necessary. After 9/11, intellectuals and policymakers asked “what went wrong?” as though the source of Atta’s animus toward the West was shrouded in some deep mystery. In the Western experience, men had not killed other men over religious questions en masse since the end of the great religious wars of the 17th century. Culture, a term that was once understood to encompass a great many facets of human identity, experience, and belonging—religion included—had also been ruled out. Saying that cultural differences exist and should be respected was a foundation of the multicultural order; the idea that some cultures might lead people to murder each other, for reasons that do not appear in the Western rationalist list of sane causes, struck many Western liberals as too close to racism to bother arguing the point.
Since then, each time the West collided with Islam, much of the Western intellectual class reached for explanations that made sense within its own secular humanist categories: grievance, humiliation, underdevelopment, alienation, foreign policy frustration, or the failure of Western states to properly integrate men like Atta, who were, or must be, inherently no different than immigrants of similar age, class, and educational attainments from Vietnam or Poland, or anyplace else. Since all conflicts are material in origin, it was assumed that they could be settled though material means. . .

Her insights into the thinking of Atta also have relevance to the current Iranian conflict.

But since Ayaan brought up settling conflicts through material means, we have other adversaries who are quite obsessed with materialism. Mayor Pete's dad translated the works of Gramsci into English, for example. You might want to share the insights below. I am including links to two versions:

The impetus was understandable, even before atomic weapons were even tested there was a lot of discussion at a high level that such weapons would proliferate and therefore a system or international control was necessary. (The Soviets, of course nixed any such notion)

But they clearly had a coordinated plan for religion in America. It had to be de-fanged. It was too powerful, church attendance was high, and the morals and traditions too ingrained in society.

32 I think there's a lot of overlap between our leftist political entities and the Islamic horde currently on a tear through the US.

For one; they share some common political beliefs that overlap with a quasi-religious ideology. The left, and the Islamic politicians we've allowed to attain office are hell bent on our destruction. And the country's. There's common cause between those two groups.

For two; we've been conditioned to accept other cultures... even at our own peril. Nobody wants to be labeled a racist, but to be honest, it's a label that's lost all meaning.

I would imagine in the not-to-distant future there'd be some push-back on all this. Being labeled all sorts of derogatory terms by the left is getting old and people are just now starting to fight back... ineffectively, but it's a start.

I'll be dead and gone, but I'm hoping the kids carry on.

Eh, Christians in Name Only will always exist. As do heresies. And it is always the same cause even for Israel and Judah in the Old Testament.

Too many humans rebel against the word of the Lord and want to create a god in their own image. They make idols of themselves and their feelz rather than do what is right. They excuse evil and promote it under lies like tolerance while attacking what is godly, beautiful, and upright morally.

So killing babies becomes good for them, inviting criminals from abroad to kill, murder and rape is called being a good Samaritan, and coddling those here to terrorize the honest and hard working people is considered as mercy.

All inversions of what is good and what is evil. And that is a sign that those CINOs chose the way of the devil.

I think in their heart of hearts they really want a man to tell them what to do. In the Brothers Karamazov, Dostoevsky wrote that free will is something most people don't want; in this case, it's really easy to see. The AWFLs won't acknowledge their craving for being controlled to themselves, because to do so would destroy their entire way of viewing the world and themselves.

I think may be a function of culture. A real boss does not have to proclaim such on social media; people know it instinctively. So Girlbossism is rather like posing and bragging to raise social status among their competitors rather than actuality.

Social media is like a twisted mirror on reality and like the palantir after Sauron obtained one, it takes a strong mind with principles plus the Holy Spirit whispering wisdom and discernment in the ear to get useful information from it.

Weaker people either despair into blackpillism or simply roll over to go with the tide whichever way it is flowing.

I can't say that. I suspect rebelling against the Lord and all his teachings is common across the ages. We just call it different movements and that in part is because institutions including churches and sects are made of mankind and will fail just like mankind often enough. But the Word of the Lord never will until the end of times despite the rise and decline of institutions.

That is the part that the Grand Inquisitor did not get. We cannot triumph ourselves with free will; we can only do so in accordance with God's will and with his blessings.

That is the part of Christianity that people including Islamists fail to get. Christ is there to help us, succor us when we are floundering, help us deal with temptation that can ensnare us, but we have to ask him and humble ourselves. Yesterday on campus, I was approached by a Boomer hippie type who wanted to give me a brochure about how our university was instrumental in promoting Nazism in Germany. He claimed this information was crucial considering the rising fascism in our country and the danger Trump poses. I told him that Trump is fighting fascism harder than just about anyone else and I'm deeply grateful for his devotion to that cause. I wonder what responses the hippie got from the young students.

Anyway, I've come to despise the efforts to pile guilt and shame on people for a past that they weren't even a part of, especially since this effort is usually paired with encouragement to engage in current immorality (I'm not talking strictly sexual immorality, although that plays a significant introductory role). I suspect that if I had engaged this guy further, I would have uncovered many of the unsavory aspects of leftism, like anti-semitism, infanticide, suppressing unapproved speech, turning criminals loose on society.

We've been watching the 9/11 shows on Nat Geo and the History channels. They've been making these for years, telling the stories of various survivors, including footage, etc.

This year I was really struck by how New York-y they all were - the accents, the obviously Irish and Italian first responders were, how they had a lot of family involved (family there for generations), the NYC sensibilities and humor. It is delightful, but also so sad, knowing this kind of New York-iness is being replaced with mass foreign immigration and "diversity" that is celebrates/valued over the long-time locals who've made this city great.

That, and the sheer, unhesitant heroics. THAT is a value of ours we take for granted, the notion that of course co-workers will carry each other down the stairs, that not just FDNY, bust civilians run toward the chaos, run UP the stairs to save as many as they can. Not all cultures do that.

What they claim is that despite these wide differences, there is no inherent superiority or preferable way of doing anything. Different, yes. Better, no. There are no objective standards, you see. There is no "right" or "wrong" way, everything is biased, blah blah blah.

The real goal is to turn people into mewling quims who will not defend what they have. Not their life, not anyone else's life, not the culture, not anything. They have no framework, no independent thought. The worst thing of all is to be "judgmental" or declare that one thing might just really be better than some other thing.

Bail on finding meaningful work and become increasingly pissed off at society. Fall back on your "degree" and join up with like minded people and spend your days protesting. You get free meals, a place to sleep and feel like you're really "sticking it to the man."
