Good morning boys and girls and everything in between. Before we enter the Prayer Revival just a few housekeeping matters to go over. (Rulz for those of you in Sauk City)
1) This is an open thread, feel free to lurk, opine and/or bloviate. Never hurts to pray either.
2) Be kind. Be nice. Unless you're feeling lucky......
3) No. Running with sharp objects is not allowed.
4) Besides not being able to run with sharp objects have a Great Weekend!

Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.
Prayer Requests:
5/23 – I used to have a Different Nic could use some prayers as he waits for the results of a biopsy of a mass on his prostate.
6/23 Update – The latest update is that he has stage 2, “unfavorable intermediate”, which he notes is an awful name, but what it means is, it is in the middle, but bad enough that they want to treat it. It’s more aggressive than previously thought. He is at the point where he has to decide on treatment options, which means choosing which set of pretty unfortunate side effects he prefers.
8/20 Update – He has finished his radiation treatment, so all he has left are blood tests and waiting. Thanks for everything.
7/25 – Teresa in Fort Worth posted an update. She is still doing fine. Her chemo pump seems to be working and everything appears stable for now. She says she is incredibly blessed! She is working on a stocking for an as-yet-not-born grandchild. She would appreciate prayers for a successful IVF procedure and pregnancy for her daughter and hubby. Next week, Teresa and her husband will be going to California to visit their daughter who lives there and her family.
8/4 Update – Teresa was admitted to the hospital while on vacation in California. She has a bad infection – cellulitis - not due to the cancer. She is being treated with antibiotics and hopefully it will be cleared up in a couple of days.
8/28 Update – Teresa’s bloodwork is back, and everything looks steady. She has a CT scan on 9/4.
7/29 – Notsothoreau asked for prayers for Billy Ray’s mother, who was just admitted to the hospital with pneumonia. She is a cancer survivor and chemo destroyed her immune system, so this is a big worry.
8/2 Update – Billy Ray’s mother is feeling better, on oxygen and medication. She is not out of the woods, but has stabilized. She appreciates the prayers from around the globe and says thank you very much.
8/16 Update – Billy Ray’s mother is at home, recovering, and down to just needing a little oxygen at night. One of the doctors told her that he didn’t think she was going to make it. Prayer works.
7/29 – TecumsehTea wrote that MrTea’s diagnosis is colon cancer stage 4. They are praying for guidance for how to proceed.
9/4 Update – MrTea has finished his 10 days of radiation. He feels pretty good. He is still taking fenben and ivermectin. He is still shedding pieces of the tumor, which is a good sign. In 2 weeks they will meet with the oncologist again, and hopefully the dna and blood tests will be done and the doctor will have a plan. Many thanks for the prayers.
7/30 – David sent an update on his wife, Susan, who we have been praying for as she is treated for cancer. Susan is still doing well and her numbers are headed in the right direction, but they are still having issues with the side effects of the chemotherapy. It is manageable, but they have to increase the number of office visits for additional treatments. Some days are really good right now, but others are only bearable with the Lord’s grace. They are so grateful for the prayers on their behalf.
8/26 Update – Susan’s cough has gotten so bad that they did X-rays on her chest. It might be pneumonia. She is in the hospital. Her sodium and blood pressure are low and she is not eating much now. They are trying to turn this around and ask for everyone’s prayers.
9/2 Update – Susan is back in the ICU. She either has an infection or the cancer has spread to her lungs. Either way, thank you all for your thoughts and prayers for Susan and please continue them.
9/3 Update – Thank you to everyone for their thoughts and prayers for Susan. They are expecting her to pass into the hands of the Lord in the next day or so. Please pray for them.
8/8 – Ace-Endorsed Author A. H. Lloyd posted that Mrs. Lloyd will undergo a double mastectomy to remove the breast cancer. She has advanced to Stage 1. Much hinges on the biopsy to determine the specific sub-category of cancer and whether chemo is necessary. Please pray for her in this time of need.
8/22 Update – Mrs. Lloyd is healing ahead of schedule and the surgeon was amazed at her progress. She is still in pain and has limited mobility, but each day she is gaining more freedom of movement. That is the good news; the bad news was the unrealistic expectations set by the medical staff. The surgery was much more significant, and she will also need chemo, contrary to what she was told before.
8/14 – RandomDave asked for renewed prayers for his job situation. He just found out that the position he was close to getting went to someone else, and doesn’t know where to turn. He hates to ask, but is getting desperate. He has a GiveSendGo set up; please contact Annie’s Stew for more info. Thanks to those who have already given and thank you for the prayers. They are keeping him from giving up.
8/15 – Donna V contacted Mis. Hum. to let the Horde know the following: “Please let the horde know I am doing fine in hospice”. She would appreciate your prayers.
8/15 – Buck requested prayers for his wife. She is diabetic, and had a bad day on 8/14, with weakness, vomiting, irregular pulse, high blood pressure. She has had sepsis 3 times. They went to ER, but they only gave her meds for nausea, and now she’s back home. Pray that she recovers quickly. Thanks to all.
8/15 – Intruder Driver asked for prayers for Tonya, who was burned over 90% of her body in a gas explosion in Cabo San Lucas. She is now in a hospital in Mexico City. She has a long road to recovery, if she survives.
8/22 Update – Tonya did not survive her burns. Prayers for her and her husband Rusty, who were/are active members of their local church in Mexico.
8/27 – P asks for prayers for the soul of her nephew, C, who committed suicide on 8/17. He was only 32. May he find the peace in the afterlife that he could not find in this life.
8/26 – Teresa in Fort Worth asks for prayers for her BIL, Dick, who was found dead in the alley behind the house in Texas. He had been in declining health and had dementia. They aren’t sure how long he was outside before he passed away. Teresa’s SIL seems to be handling it okay so far. Teresa also asks for prayers for a former neighbor, Melissa, who is hospitalized, recovering from a second stem cell/bone marrow transplant as they attempt to cure her leukemia. She now has blood blisters in her mouth and throat. She had to be intubated before her throat closed completely. This might be her body rejecting the transplant.
8/27 – “…” asked for prayers for healing (and sleep) for Brit Lass. She is having tests, and so far they are good, but she is worried. She has an imaging test coming up and then an appointment with a surgeon.
8/30 – SPinRH_F-16 requested prayers for classmate “D.B.”, who has ALS. Please pray that he remains as comfortable as possible and for support for his family as they see him through this. Thank you in advance for your earnest prayers.
9/2 – Bulg asked for prayers for purpose in his life.
9/4 – bluebell sent an update on grammie winger. Grammie was diagnosed with epilepsy now. And she is back in the hospital. They would love prayers for comfort and peace for her.
9/10 – Annie’s Stew asks for prayers for her husband as he recovers from knee surgery.
9/10 – D asked for prayers for the memory of 9/11. May the Lord comfort people in the grief, and may it bring people closer to God.

14 I've been reading on epilepsy and surprised to find how prevalent adult onset is, about half of all cases.

I had always thought it was mostly congenital or developmental. But a lot of conditions can cause epilepsy as a secondary effect.

37 Gloomy and overcast here in Bourbon country. We had over 2" of rain yesterday. It all came down in about 3 hours. Like some others here, I've got grass to mow but it won't be today, or tomorrow. More rain is forecast today.

And speaking of gas/diesel prices.... I'll have to go get some diesel for the tractor before I can start.

It's within a few blocks of the river, but no boat ramps that I know of. I do see people hauling boats around here all the time. The Walmart (Murphy Oil) gas pumps nearby have it too, but for $4.39 or more.

The Exxon-branded place near my house still has the stuff at $3.69 and has for months, even when regular went down and now back up. It's *cheaper* there than the regular E10. The last time I used it my gas mileage was little better than it is on E10. I suspect that "E0" is old gas, or laced with ethanol and being labeled fraudulently as E0. In April a chain in Kansas was doing that but not labeling the premium as E10-E15.

Doing well here - CT scan came back fine; there is a small spot on one of my lungs, but no idea if it is cancer related or not. Since it is the only one, they will be zapping it with radiation in the next month or so.

There is a possibility that the surgeon may want to attempt liver resection again - he told me I am one of his "rock star" patients, in that I am doing so well on treatment. I know that I am extremely fortunate. And apparently I am very hard to kill.... 😂😂😂

Thanks for the continued prayers! I may be absent a lot from commenting over the next few months, as we are getting ready to undertake a kitchen remodel. We have never "hired out" any projects before, so this will be interesting!

59 I would like to ask prayer for the W. family for comfort and strength, and for me as I officiate at a funeral service this morning. The woman had been part of our church as a youngster until she moved away, but would come back to look after her parents when they were older and to visit her brother who was a Korean War vet and the patriarch of the church . She was 92 and a sweet woman despite some big tragedies in her life. Now all the people in their 90's who were part of the church have gone to be with the Lord.

I love that Jeff Sagarin has declared WMU the winner in his rankings. A lot of people missed the fact that the MAC asked the NCAA *and* the CFBP members to treat the game as a Western Michigan victory. At least some of them are.

Three of the quarterly AKC meetings are held at the airport hotel in Newark. The AKC is headquartered in New York City, though most of the operations are in Raleigh, NC. It's just more convenient to have meetings so that travel into the city isn't necessary. The fourth quarterly meeting is in Orlando during the week of the AKC National Championship show.

My wife has sadly scheduled a dinner with friends but as yet unnamed illness is in the way of that.

What makes the situation really hard is that the port surgery pushed the recovery timeline back, so we're having to do more intensive care. If my wife could just have some grip strength and a little more range of motion, things would be a lot easier.

That will come, but it's still a slog.

Cancer treatments today are much better than when my wife started hers 18 years ago. That she lasted 16 years was a miracle; my youngest had turned 17 just two days before she passed, so she came close to her goal of not passing before the kids were grown up.

140 Cancer treatments today are much better than when my wife started hers 18 years ago. That she lasted 16 years was a miracle; my youngest had turned 17 just two days before she passed, so she came close to her goal of not passing before the kids were grown up.

My mother-in-law died of cancer when she was 62 and the variety she had was one of the really tough ones no one lives through.

The oncology nurse said that it seems every month there's another breakthrough in identifying a type and developing a treatment and the kind my wife has is one of the ones where they have powerful drugs to target it. She only has 12 doses of chemo ahead of her (1 per week) and then it will be just the drug therapy which is pretty mild.

And of course if she can't tolerate it, they will stop, but the nurse seemed pretty confident because they rarely have to. It's quite the journey.

That got me thinking about Israel, and whether it counts one way or another.

Israel has no mass-market car. From the 60s-80s , they gave it a feeble attempt, with cars like the Sussita and the Tzabra. To give them their due, these were better than the best Warsaw Pact mass market rides like the Trabant or Wartburg. But they were still horrid crap based on horrid British Reliant designs, and horrid, slovenly British manufacturing techniques. So, still socialist garbage that I would compare to the Serb Zastava cars in terms of quality.

That said, they build some of the world's finer armor, from trucks and troop-transports, to main battle tanks. Some of these are built by private companies, and some by the MoD, but i think it counts for something. They're of the best quality, and fearsome.

We had a TV in the conference room, and I'd heard about the first impact on the way to the office, and we were all standing around watching the footage when the second aircraft hit. I have to admit that my recollection is a bit hazy, but people recalled that I immediately said: "That's an act of war."

I then waked into the boss' office and said: "Turn on your TV. We're at war."

I didn't have much to add, other than to note than a few months later, I brought my newborn daughter into the office for a meet-and-greet (we were like that). We had no idea then that she would go on to earn a campaign ribbon for a war that started before she was born.

It's a very expensive hobby, but less expensive than horses. The money goes out, not in. In essence, it's a livestock show. The payout is the gratification of being recognized for doing a superior job of breeding.

We do a lot and have achieved a lot, but really we're just small potatoes next to the big boys, who may spend a couple of million dollars a year showing and promoting their dogs. We're pleased as punch for recently getting a Best in Show but the top dog in the country, a Gordon Setter, has 63 of them as of the end of July.

I hear Michigan fans say that, but in my experience, the Spartan Nation is all about the Scarlet and Gray in November.

When I was at MSU, Ohio State brought its band up for the game (which was not all that common in those days, I think we did one away game other than South Bend and Ann Arbor), and we immediately hit it off.

We actually traded merch catalogs (no internet, you needed the paper forms) and that is how I have two Ohio State Marching Band t-shirts, included the coveted Friday Gray, which they made a big deal out of letting us wear.

Of course other bands would swap shirts as well, and I have an Indiana one and Purdue one that was sadly lost.

There's also huge growth in non-public education because it sucks, and childless people are not going to be willing to pay high taxes for other peoples' kids.

Higher ed will also be decimated. This is the long awaited turning of the tide, and it cannot be stopped.

It is very expensive to do. Her Majesty used to show our dogs herself, but her knees had to be replaced and she could no longer run fast enough. She was very good at it, but most people have no idea how to show their dogs to the best effect, or how to best groom it. That's why they turn to professional handlers.

There's a book called Black Hearts that chronicles his experiences and those of his fellow warriors. Not an easy read. God bless your daughter and all who served...

On the other hand, we have a false and stereotypical view of what Native American societies were like in the pre-columbian era. They were not the Sioux or the Cherokee riding across the plains - no horses. From the eastern half of Texas over to Georgia and stretching up the Mississippi drainage area up to Illinois, there was an extensive mound building culture of thousands of small farming villages with a mostly dispersed population - whatever the land could carry.

LIDAR around here turns up new mounds every day now, and each mound was most likely a village center. Some contain burials, but most appear to have been platforms for some central structure. And while there were not many large cities, there were a few that are now forgotten. Etowah in NW Georgia was a large, well defended city with palisade walls and a population between 15,000 and 25,000 in the 1400’s.

All of this was wiped out by smallpox epidemics.

I was in a recruiting office a week after the attack. It took time to untangle my paperwork from my Short Unsuccessful Army Career, and then I wanted to wait until the baby was born and things settled down at home, so I reenlisted in August, 2002, this time in the Air National Guard. I intended to do just one enlistment which I figured would be "the duration." Yeah.

As time wore on and the years piled up, getting a retirement seemed like a good idea, and those of us of a certain age jokingly said our contract was for "the duration." It kind of was, because after the Afghanistan debacle, a bunch of us got out. Those couldn't right away set a timer, and of course Covid also pushed people out. I retired on Dec. 31, 2022.

Newark was a real hot spot with large department stores, the Paramount theater where many stars appeared, including Frank Sinatra. It began going downhill in the late 50's when many, including my wife's parents, moved further south to locations where large housing developments were being constructed. The construction of the Garden State Parkway facilitied that movement. They could live 15 or 20 miles south of Newark, Irvington, Kearney, etc, but still keep their jobs in those cities, including Western Electric where most Bell Telephone equipment was manufactured. Sadly, cities, as does nature, abhor a vacuum. Guess who filled that vacuum? Many blacks from the South moved north and settled in the cities. It was always amusing to hear them speak with a southern accent even though they're from Newark and are three generations removed.

When I was a kid we moved from the NYC area to NJ. One day my mom took me and a friend to see a movie we were begging her to take us too. In Newark. It was a stupid horror movie called something like The Beast of Blood. Scared the shit out of us.

My dad grew up a few miles south of the CO-WY border. Grandparents stayed there until they died, and a cousin inherited the old farm. My uncle settled up north of Cheyenne, was an old country veterinarian. Good people. My brothers, save one, all live in CO. Fortunately not the Boulderite or Front Range sort.

It is really funny how someone's beliefs seem to shape out they age. You look at traditional, not even conservative but just normal people and they always age better than liberals.

The men in particular take on a feminine appearance, so matter how rugged they looked when they were young. I'm guessing its the lack of testosterone.

Normal men, masculine men, gain more rugged features, sharper not rounded, lean rather than bloated. It's fascinating.

I remember the riots very vividly. Took my physical for the draft with the NG still patrolling the streets. Three months later, I was drafted and back in Newark with my fellow draftees retaking the physical before the bus trip to Fort Dix. Fast forward to 1987 and I was working at a television station (where Uncle FLoyd did his show), about two blocks away from University Hospital. We closed that studio down in 2006.

After 25 years I couldn't think of anything worth saying that has not already been said. It's just depressing to think about.
So I found other things to do and yesterday evening went and watched our local high school team play football. Had a good time, enjoyed the game (we won) and saw a ton of people I know. Seems like we all had the same idea, just get out and have some fun. Life is too short to brood about things you can't do anything about.
