Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Hobby Thread - August 29, 2026 [TRex] Welcome hobbyists! Pull up a chair and sit a spell with the Horde in this little corner of the interweb. This is the mighty, mighty officially sanctioned Ace of Spades Hobby Thread. For this week, the Wheel of Hobbies (TM) is feeling lucky and decided on a YouTubeing theme for this Hobby Thread. A what? A YouTube theme? Warning: there may be modest math involved.a. splitting ad revenue that YouTube charges advertisers b. earning a share of pooled YouTube Premium revenue c. memberships d. sponsorships (either cash or barter) e. using YouTube as a funnel to personal business lines outside of YouTube. 2) Channels do not automatically qualify for monetization. A channel must meet minimum criteria for subscribers and watch hours. The current requirement is 1,000 subscribers, and either 4,000 watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in the last 90 days. New rules in Feb 2027 double the required watch hours or Shorts views. (There is a lower tier that unlocks access to some features, but no ad revenue.) Once monetized, a channel must post periodically to remain monetized. a. Creators split revenue with YouTube for long-form videos 55/45. Earnings are measured by revenue per thousand views. Shorts pay, but a lot lower because ads run between short videos and revenue is pooled. b. Advertisers can directly choose individual YouTube channels (or even specific videos) where their ads will appear. They can also pay for exposure to viewer characteristics and let YouTube place the ads. c. Ad revenue varies widely by niche, audience location/desirability (e.g., US finance viewers pay far more than gaming viewers in lower-tier countries), watch time/retention (longer videos serve more ads), and seasonality (such as holidays). The result is that different channels with the same number of views can earn very different ad revenue. d. Revenue is only earned if viewers watch the ads. 4) Some YouTube viewers pay a fee to watch without ads through the YouTube Premium. 60% of the net revenue is pooled and split among creators based on view activity of Premium members. 10) Ten to thirty minute videos with strong retention are ideal. This partially explains why some videos that could be done in five minutes seem like they're stretched to 10 or 15 minutes. The short attention spans of most viewers is an ongoing challenge. ![]() ![]() Words of wisdom: "Because despite all our troubles, when things are grim out in that wide round world of ours, that's when it's really important to have a good hobby." My oldest friend has a YT channel with some of his computer animations -- one featuring a groundhog who dreams of a better life than working in a coal mine. It needs either narration or subtitles for the viewer to know what's going on, and he's working on that.
Aside from that, I don't know any YooToobers -- unless some of you are? -- and have been only a consumer of its wares. This morning Grumpy & Recalcitrant posted a kitty video. What came up immediately after was a 30-minute video, "30 Insane Facts About The Man From U.N.C.L.E.!" Clearly composed with AI, it was studded with errors for anybody who knows the show. At least the episode clips were well-chosen. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at August 29, 2026 05:37 PM (wzUl9) 7

One of my favorite YouTubers to watch was known to some of you here. I know one of the COBS posted some of his stuff.
The "Desert Drifter"...aka Andrew Cross. Unfortunately, he died in a car accident last year. His channel was entertaining and enjoyable not just because of the content, but he had something that a lot of his peers are severely missing...(likeable, well behaved, didn't use expletives as an adjective, excellent at editting, and truly interesting and entertaining content). I miss his stuff. For those that don't know, he would explore the American Southwest (very much off the trail) and locate ruins, glyphics, lost civilization encampments, old west grafitti, undiscovered caves and dwellings. All kinds of interesting items. He NEVER disturbed any of it or took tools, pottery, anything. He left it as he found it. He was the type YouTuber that brought value to the platform. Never posted on YT or was tempted to. But I do use it a lot, probably half my time online is on YT. Most frequent topics are literature/reading related, hobby how-to, some history, a lot of music. It's a source for information, sometimes inspiration, not random and mindless 'entertainment'. I'll leave that to television.
One of the blessings of YT is discovering the rabbit holes that appear during a video. Malcolm Guite videos are especially good at that. One of the curses of YT is not having time to pursue all the rabbit holes. Posted by: JTB at August 29, 2026 06:14 PM (yTvNw) 27

Hi TRex - interesting info. My top two YT channels (both are whisky channels) are 100% viewer supported, so no ads nor sponsorships. Worth my money in terms of that and because I really appreciate what they are doing and want to see them continue to be successful (Roy Duff/Aqvavitae and Ralfy).
The few American whiskey channels I follow are on the ads plus subscription model. i put up with the ads, as I'm getting what I pay for here. I've come to realize that my YT and Substack subscriptions have gradually replaced all but one of my magazine subscriptions - certainly saves a lot of shelf space. (Decades of R&T. mostly discarded during the last move.) Posted by: Patches at August 29, 2026 06:22 PM (338iJ) 39
What's neat is how his "success" sort of fed on itself. heh, what I mean, he has access to really rare and obscure stuff now. People send him things to review, or he buys them. Some are pretty spendy. It's pretty interesting if you have any experience in that sort of thing.

I saw a video that said, I finally got a Mustang, which is my least favorite muscle car. Looking closer, I saw they meant a horse. The video started with them picking out a young gelding in California and trailering him home to Idaho. Then, the wife started working with him while the husband videoed. It's pretty entertaining if you like horses, and the couple are charming and seemingly decent people who have aspirations of living a rural life, taming mustangs and mules with behavioral problems and re-homing them to other decent people. They also have a hunting channel, if you like that sort of thing, which I do.

For the pipe smokers. C and D released their Christmas blend last week, Jolly Old St. Nicholas. Virginia base with black cavendish, a touch of Perique and an orange/ginger flavoring. Very pleasant, not strong but lots of flavor. The orange and ginger give it a feel of Grand Marnier liqueur.

As for my piping hobby: This week I ran out to the local pipe/cigar shop, intending to splurge a bit . . . and found nothing I wanted to buy. Then I ordered some more tobacco blends online, Kramer's Blend for Cary Grant* and Bob's Chocolate Flake from a British company called Gawith & Hoggarth. And a third blend I can't recall right now. One ounce each, so I can see if I like them.
* Kramer's was a long-time fixture in LA, a pipe and tobacco shop in Beverly Hills that only closed recently. Reportedly stars like Cary Grant, Danny Kaye, and others had Kramer's make up custom pipe blends for them. The name has been taken over by Cornell & Diehl, and the blends are being sold online -- some in bulk, so you can get as little as one ounce, and some in two-ounce tins. I also watch Eugenio Monesma's Documentales, which is about Spanish lost crafts, and fortunately YouTube has automatic translation to English. Regarding the two pipes I won: The giver says that the Weber should be ready to smoke, while the Canadian Club might need a little work. In the pics I see that both need their stems polished and could use some wax on the bowls. Maybe I'll send them off to a repair/rejuvenation shop I've used in PA that will handle that. Cleaning, sanding, and polishing vulcanite (hard rubber) stems is tedious work.
If they both have "cake," carbon buildup, in the bowls, I certainly will send them off. Carving that stuff out can be tricky; you can carve right into the wood of the bowl if you're not careful. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at August 29, 2026 06:46 PM (wzUl9) 56
I regard YT as a handy, sometimes valuable, resource. But the amount of AI slop and just plain BS is increasing. And I despise the competitive ones like "I read 5,000 books last week and so can you". I trust none of the 'news' channels or matters of opinion. And if I get a whiff of AI designed to be original content or for the presenter, I'm gone. Using AI as a tool to make an image for fun (look at the top of the thread) is fine. Using it to lend 'authority' to the information or presentation is out of bounds. At least out of my bounds.

Posted by: Skip at August 29, 2026 *** Some of the errors in the 30-minute U.N.C.L.E. video were simple -- saying that Jill Ireland appeared five times on the show, each time as a different character, whereas it was four times and two of them were the same character; and little things like saying Shatner and Nimoy appeared in the show in 1964, "before Gene Roddenberry had written a word of Star Trek." Uh, no; GR had written the pilot, "The Cage," earlier that year and was filming it in late '64. Among other things, though, the AI came in where, in several spots, the narrator tells us that "Napoleon Solo's [prop] gun is stored in the CIA Museum," and each time the video shows a single-shot dueling pistol of the kind Napoleon *Bonaparte* would have known. And it mentions Robert Taylor, the MGM star of the '30s-'50s, but shows a pic of the Australian Robert Taylor who starred in Longmire. Jeez Louise! I wish there was a way to give a thumbs down to certain ads. If I see one more Talafreako ad with PawPaw on the front porch, Im gonna pull an Elvis and shoot whatever device I’m using.
Posted by: TxAnn at August 29, 2026 07:02 PM *** Amen. Especially during political campaign season. Posted by: TRex - ad buster dino at August 29, 2026 07:07 PM (XfIK1) 68

Always wondered why my lawnmower repair guy, Taryl Dactal, always did a skit before getting down to business. Thought it may have been for tax purposes. Now I know.

I like the Desert Gulch painting, polynikes.
Posted by: Mr Aspirin Factory at August 29, 2026 07:03 PM (HW/1v) Thanks. I was happy to gift that one to Ben Had. Posted by: polynikes at August 29, 2026 07:15 PM (KC5Lt) 73
Thinking about the info TRex provided in the post and about the channels I watch most often, I doubt many, if any, depend on their YT presence for a serious income. The channel might lead folks to things they offer for sale: a book or lecture series, no problem. But if the content is just an infomercial with hype but little value otherwise, I'll stop watching.

Because I lead a stress free life in a non bat feces crazy area I will on occasion watch the body cam videos from traffic stops/ police arrests.

Time to say thank you before the next act takes the Ace of Spades stage. Thanks for being here. Different theme next week, but we'll have to consult the Wheel of Hobbies for guidance.

Thank you again polynikes for your incredible gift. Posted by: Ben Had at August 29, 2026 07:23 PM (PbWRL) 78
I have no idea if the video photographers make anything, but do try to give thumbs up and hype when I can. I watch them so must like them and want them to keep doing it if they can.
