Never have been into radio control things. I had a scale model race car, a "Shark," many many years ago, and I think it was self-powered with batteries, but I'm not sure.
I guess it's just that, when I had a patio as a kid, we didn't have the money and the tech wasn't there yet. And since then I've never had a smooth surface to run an RC model on -- indoor carpet would be a problem, I'd think. Why is the Porsche 959 such a special RC model? is it merely that it's rare? Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at August 22, 2026 05:45 PM *** Yes. Few were made and it was never re-issued. It was also sophisticated for its time. Many were used and abused, so few remain in good condition. The connection to the real world Porsche 959 Dakar racer also helps. Posted by: TRex - dakar dino at August 22, 2026 05:49 PM (cCn4/) 17
And further developing the Movie Vault app, I discovered there is a free gitub api with historical Oscar data, so I'm adding a research module to the app.
You'll be able to do searches and lookups on Oscar data. I'm trying to figure out how I can leverage it to enhance the app, perhaps look up a year and it will show you the movies for a particular year and tell you if they are in your collection or not. Anyways, it's worth pondering over a nice bourbon and some sour patch gummies. Posted by: Thomas Bender at August 22, 2026 05:49 PM (XV/Pl) 18

I've been making an effort to get fully moved in to the house so I can do some of this hobby stuff that I once did. I mean, the reason I bought the house with the big yard is so I could put some HF antennas.
The main antennas will have to wait, but I've ginned up some a design for a trap vertical and I've got a slingshot so I can get it over the branches of one of the trees. So, soon. The thing is, I've found every radio except one. It's an Elecraft KX3 that, due to the way things worked out, I haven't ever used. I sure hope I find it. Nonexistent towns or place names were included in maps, to of course verify copyright violations. "Gotcha!"
Before internet and Goolag Erf and satellite imagery, USGS topo maps were the only way to really check remote places out. They were a lot of fun. You wrote to one address for maps east of the Mississippi and a different address for maps west of the Mississippi. You could spend a lot of time poring over the contours, areas of interest, roads and mines, all sorts of interesting data. Benchmarks and survey marks, springs, etc. Learning how to do the "accordion fold" was a thing on the trail, or cutting it down to size and getting it laminated. I used to frequent a bar in my youth that used radio controlled cars to deliver shots. Someone built a little wooden shot glass holder where the spoiler used to be. The bar, itself was behemouth horseshoe. The bartender made a performance out of it. If someone bought the bar a round, he'd load up the radio controlled cars, then climb up into one of those raised Lifeguard chairs with the controls and begin delivery down the entire bar.
It was a great sales gimmick since everyone wanted to see the performance. There was an old traffic light at the end of the bar (like at drag races) that would count down to the green light at the bottom....and everyone cheered. Posted by: Orson at August 22, 2026 06:21 PM (dIske) 46

There were a couple of guys who flew RC planes in a field across from me in California. One was very skilled, and I'd sometimes go over and chat him up a bit.
Then there was the other guy. First guy warned me about him. Often lost sight of his plane, due to flying too fast, or maneuvering beyond the range of his controller. One day I heard the typical sound of an RC plane buzzing the area. A few minutes later I go outside and I hear the plane approaching overhead, which immediately tells me it's The Other Guy. I look up and see the plane slowly pass over my roof, losing altitude and heading towards the neighbor's. A few minutes later, Other Guy finds me in my patio and asks if I saw his plane flying over. I did, and after a few more minutes of checking the area, found it in the neighbor's bushes. Nice guy, but..yeah, clueless... Posted by: Joe Kidd at August 22, 2026 06:41 PM (nbLIj) 64

I wouldn't mind having the Hartland figurine of Bat Masterson. It was beautifully painted, resembled Gene Barry to a certain degree, and included the cane, derby hat, and his pistol in a waist cross-draw holster.
The Bret Maverick figure looked even more like James Garner, but the hat that came with it was white. Normally Bret wore a black hat in the series -- though I did see one early episode on H & I some years ago where he had a white or light gray hat. I took photos of my roof with my drone and passed them on to my insurance agent after a bad series of storms a few years ago.
Got a new roof... well, the shingles at least. I've also documented the periodic flooding that plagues some of the area (not us) as well. Model railroading also uses radio control. "Wireless" throttles/controllers talk to base stations that send control signals to the trains. Lionel offers TMCC for use with their trains. DCC (Digital Command Control) is popular with layout builders in all scales. Many say it's "the only way to run a railroad!"

FCC rules for ISM bands are pretty cool. Anybody can xmt without a license, pretty much. So it's an uncoordinated free-for-all. Those who use the bands have to design their comms tech to withstand interference from other users, which means they usually use Hedy Lamarr's spread-spectrum tricks. Amateur radio tech like LoRa and Meshtastic also use those bands.
They make the cutest little 915MHz yagi antennas for ISM; maybe someday I'll splurge on one. Posted by: gp at August 22, 2026 07:25 PM (Jr5Lq) 100

You can go all Yankee-Workshop to make an apple press, true.
Or you can do the Kindltot method. Instead of a scratter, you buy a used stainless sink, put it into a framework to hold it at working height, then get a brand-new (this is important, it needs to be brand new) garbage disposal, and put a 5 gallon bucket under the out-flow. This turns apples into ground up pulp, suitable for pressing. If you buy a 3/4 HP grinder you have to first chop your apples to about eighths so the motor doesn't get off center and then overheated. For the press, use a tongue jack instead of buying an iron arbor and that Acme screw and hardware. I use a 3500 lb jack, that I had the neighbor weld two angle irons to, so I could mount it in an arbor made of 4x4s and two 2x4s over a braced plywood platform, all bolted together with carriage bolts and decking screws. For a pressing surface, I use an industrial cooking sheet with a drainage hole drilled in one end for the juice to run ou, and the pulp is kept in a "cheese" that is a wad of pulp held in a sheet, formed-up in a square form knocked together from 2x4s. I use UHMW cutting boards between the "cheeses" to keep them in place while pressing. Posted by: Kindltot at August 22, 2026 07:27 PM (rbvCR) 104

I always liked the Matthew's Southern Comfort version of Woodstock over the CSNY version. (I thimk it was CSNY). It has this otherworldly feel to it that appealed to my 7th grade mind and still appeals today. --- As mentioned, it's a Joni Mitchell tune. She didn't even attend the Woodstock debacle, because she was scheduled for the Dick Cavett show the day after it ended, and her producer was worried about her not making it to NYC. She not only made it to the taping, so did CSNY (or at least Crosby and Stills) and the Airplane. Stills appeared with muddy boots and his Josey Wales blanket poncho, and played "4 and 20" live. It's a real time capsule episode, you can see it on YouTube Posted by: Common Tater at August 22, 2026 08:47 PM (EFUZI) 193

My son --17-- is very into e-bikes. Not just riding them but working on them and switching parts. This has become a huge thing. You can get these kits and parts that you put on a regular bike and turn it into an e-bike. There are "rideouts" across the country where kids gather to parade through the streets. So far the ones I know about are wholesome. My son has delayed getting his driver's license, as do a lot of kids, because they can e-bike almost anywhere as long as you are urban, semi-urban, or suburban.
