I was there after the arch was tied off but before you could "ride the little train" inside. That part was a disappointment. But it was worth the side trip, because the project sign was still up with the names of all the firms involved.

The principal contractor was The MacDonald Corp.
It's been about 60 years, and I'll never forget that.

I like the art of the era celebrating industry. science, and labor. Whatever the intentions of the artists, the Deco-influenced WPA art works for me. Diego Rivera was a commie jerk, sure, but I still like, for example, his "Man, Controller of the Universe." I like the Deco stuff on Hoover Dam, and the WPA art we had in my HS.

One of my earliest, fondest, awestruck, and inspirational memories as a young boy is of my uncle -- a disabled iron worker (bad back injury that turned him into a self-medicating alcoholic) in the late 60s -- driving me around the beautiful red-brick buildings in downtown Butte, MT, pointing out to me all of the various structures he worked on and helped build during his career.

That memory always come flooding back whenever I go back to visit my family there in the birthplace of my parents ...

104 I have a large Art Deco panel right next to me here, made in 1941. 8'X9' fresco plaster, enamel and gold and silver leaf on an oak panel. Rescued it from a building from demolition across the street from Madison Square Garden in 1984. The artist, Louis Ross, did extensive murals for the '39 World's Fair and was a protege of Hildreth Meiere, a woman who helped bring Art Deco to the US. She studied in Paris around 1920. They did a goodly amount of work on Rockefeller Center decoration both inside and out.

I did that, once, when I was in college and our school played in and won the NCAA Frozen Four tournament. Very claustrophobic it was.

I cannot imagine the ham planets wandering around this country today getting aboard it. It would resemble Colin Firth insulting overweight tourists setting out to climb stairs at an attraction in the movie, "In Bruges".

Stephen Tyler actually has very strong vocals, that he pushed to the absolute max, hence his recent vocal cord injury. To scream in range like he does and immediately return without being pitchy takes talent. If you hear his vocals in isolation, there is not much that gets engineered, which is amazing with this genre. He does not have the range Axel Rose did (does? He has been hard on his voice, too), but he has pipes under all that flair.

Interesting comments this morning when the prosecution and defense were arguing what to do about this juror. Supposedly the jury foreman's note acknowledged that this holdout juror has expressed doubt but still won't "apply the law".

This doesn't bode well for finding her guilty as charged.

Asbestos abatement is simply spraying it with water when removing to keep dust particles from flying.

Heavy rains should take care of most of that.
