8 And the only characters in the painting are the Indians and their horses. No Seventh Cavalry officers or men. A bold choice for Remington.

The horses and men all look craggy and weathered, as you'd expect from a life on the Plains.

76 Mentioned this before, but the Rock Island Arsenal has a military weapons museum. All kinds of stuff, neat place. Congress had a big investigation in 1876 due to the unpleasantness with Custer’s 7th, and somehow they obtained a few of the Indian rifles that were used there. They liked to use brass tacks on the stocks in geometric designs, things like that. Henry repeaters, the forerunner of the Winchester.

78 Apparently there is a debate as to whether one of Custer's officers, a Major Reno, caused the defeat by not reinforcing him.

Overall there was plenty of poor planning and poor commanding to go around in that battle...they basically blundered into way, way more Indian warriors then they expected.

82 Speaking of Indian weapons - if you ever saw the movie Last of the Mohicans they give Chingachgook an odd looking club.

This is a real historical weapon called a Gunstock war club.

It looks like a rifle/musket but is just a club. Supposedly the Indians saw colonists use muskets as effective clubs and therefore designed clubs in the same shape

83 Real nice painting. Color's a bit washed out.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at July 10, 2026 10:02 AM (1z8ji)

84 Interesting in the lack of color. At first I thought it was an ink wash but the details are too exact. Remington certainly conveyed the essence of the battle: A small, now isolated, stand of the troopers facing the overwhelming numbers of Indians. The crowding in the foreground is in stark contrast to the small, distant cluster on the hill.

An emotional, effective painting.

111 Lesser known fact about Custer; he may have won the Battle of Gettysburg and the Civil War. Lee's plan was to have J.E.B. Stuart attack the Union line from the rear as Pickett attacked from the front. Custer's cavalry blocked Stuart from arriving in the Union rear to launch his attack. Custer's men later killed Stuart at Yellow Tavern.

134 @95 A historian I knew at the time won the Norton Prize about 30 years ago by doing a several year research project there. They have thousands of old pattern muskets and interchangeable parts still in stock, cosmolened. He used an electron microscope to reveal the fact that, even though economic philosophers have reviled "armory practice" mass production for putting skilled craftsmen out of work, in practice the Army's insistence on field-exchangeable parts resulted in a lot of file marks -- proof of increased employment and higher-paid gunsmiths. They also have all their hand-script pay records, so he was able to back up the observation with, literal, receipts. A meaningful sidelight to industrial archeology.

162 Fight on the Little Big Horn, circa 1900
Frederic Remington

This is a pretty public thread; did I miss the land acknowledgement?

"Fight on the Little Bighorn" (circa 1900) is an acclaimed oil painting by Frederic Remington, prominently depicting the famed 1876 battle. It is permanently housed at The Brinton Museum in Big Horn, Wyoming, which offers dedicated exhibits showcasing Remington's iconic depictions of the American West.

The work reflects the exact period when Remington shifted away from literal magazine illustrations toward impressionistic fine art.

He created a few notable works focused on Custer and the 7th Cavalry, including Custer's Last Charge (A Sabre Charge) and a pen-and-ink drawing for Mrs. Custer, though the Brinton painting is his primary large-scale interpretation of the event.

Rather than focusing on a heroic, idealized depiction of George Armstrong Custer, Remington chose to capture a chaotic, dust-filled melee. The style highlights the desperation, movement, and heat of the battle.

The romanticized "Last Stand" themes, the underdogs against overwhelming odds.

He had a wonderful body of work. Would hang this painting.

A good weekend start

187 Because

The New York State Department of Health issued a historic $544,000 civil penalty against a nurse practitioner for running a massive, $1.5 million fake vaccine card scheme.

She operated Wild Child Pediatric Healthcare in Amityville, charged between $85 and $350 per fraudulent dose and deliberately entered false vaccination data into the New York State Immunization Information System.

State officials found she falsified immunization records for children. In some instances, she handed out homeopathic pellets to parents while falsely logging them as official vaccines for deadly diseases like polio and the measles.

She laundered the proceeds through multiple financial transactions—even using the illicit profits to pay off her home.

Reportedly.

190 I'm something of a history buff so have read numerous articles on Little Big Horn and specifically those focused Custer himself, his character and temperament. He was possessed with the same hubris that killed Fetterman and his men. Custer had to know, based on his scouts' reports and other evidence, that he was facing a large and formidable force consisting of arguably the best mounted warriors in the world.

What Custer didn't know was that many of those warriors were equipped with then-modern rifles at least equal to his troopers' carbines. Would Custer have engaged had he known? Almost certainly, and that over-confidence is ultimately what killed him, just as it did Fetterman.

The big 'what if' of the first Civil War...
good odds Lee would have won if Stonewall had been in charge instead of Ewell.

But it wouldn't have prevented Grant from taking Vicksburg and cutting the Confederacy in half. Lee may have prolonged the war but despite some daydreams, it wouldn't have won the war for the South.

I think he was already getting jittery because his cavalry had vanished and he feared Lee getting reenforced, but the concussion occurred at a singularly bad moment and it was all downhill from there.

Speed and audacity had carried Custer far, it would be out of character for him to change. Sometimes too much success can be lethal. A man needs setbacks and failures to give him perspective.

If Jackson had taken Culp's Hill, Meade would have fallen back south to a defensive line along Pipe Creek, which he'd wanted to do in the first place.

I'd suggest that if Jackson was still with the army, there wouldn't have been a fight at Gettysburg at all.

Between him and Longstreet, they would have been able to convince Lee to withdraw to defensible ground between Meade and Washington, and force Meade to attack them.

Meade would have broken his army and Washington would be open for the taking.

According to Sitting Bull's account years later, the battle ended quickly--or at least that part of it under Custer's direct command. 'In the time it took to light a pipe,' per Sitting Bull. Scholars estimate it lasted approximately 15-20 minutes. Could a horse-drawn Gatling gun crew under those conditions--without cover--set up and lay down enough fire to suppress/defeat a mounted force of approximately 2000 men? Doubtful.
