The Morning Report — 6/ 26 /26

MAODani.jpg

Good morning kids. The scope of the disaster in Venezuela, in the wake of a devastating earthquake staggers the imagination.

Look at the despair and the sorrow of the people unable to rescue their injured loved ones from beneath the tons and tons of rubble, some of them calling out, dying, in homes transforming by the hour into tombs. . . There's no search and rescue, there's no ambulances, there's no hospitals, there's no fire trucks, and yes, fires are breaking out nightmarishly enough -- Venezuela's health care lies in ruins - nor is there an organized effort to dig out.

Socialism has well and truly taken over in that country, and as this leftish but still good essayist in the Caracas Chronicles notes, one of the effects is that the state has abandoned its basic functions of government. . .

Since at least 2022, the Venezuelan state has increasingly adopted a hands-off approach to governance. This shift, shaped by a post-socialist form of laissez-faire economic policy, reduced state control over large parts of the economy and contributed to a modest but visible revival in business activity. In many ways, the tate appeared to retreat from major areas of public administration while preserving absolute control over others, particularly the security apparatus and the machinery of censorship and political repression.

And yet the very system of government that resulted in making a natural disaster into a dystopian nightmare is seemingly on the march in New York City and perhaps across America as a whole.

Young urban voters across the country are flocking to the hip new politics of urban socialism.
Across urban America, the socialists are on a roll.
This week, all three democratic socialist candidates backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani won their primaries for the U.S. House in deep blue New York City. You might be tempted to dismiss the latest victories on the grounds that New York City — which recently elected Mayor Zohran “Warmth of Collectivism” Mamdani — is America’s designated socialism containment zone. But the far-left’s momentum is by no means unique to The Empire State. Arguably more important are the democratic socialists’ victories in some of America’s other largest cities, representing a realignment where the urban, educated base of the Democratic Party increasingly sees the once-poisonous s-word in a candidate’s biography as a credential rather than a liability.

And yet, despite that, I give you this glimmer of hope.

Political scientist John Sides recently dropped a data-heavy report detailing a massive vibe shift that has left the professional panic-mongers utterly bewildered. For decades, the media smugly preached the gospel of the "inevitable liberal consensus." The theory was simple: as old conservatives died off, the enlightened youth would usher in a progressive utopia of gender-neutral communes and government-mandated weed dispensaries. It was a nice little fantasy for the faculty lounge, but the data shows it has officially crashed at high speed into the brick wall of reality. . .

. . . The beautiful irony in all of this is that the left’s aggressive push to colonize every corner of American life has utterly backfired. By turning every major institution—from universities to comic books to Fortune 500 companies—into a humorless, hyper-woke HR department, they did the unthinkable: they made conservatism cool again.

So, as we approach America's 250th birthday whither our future? Will the era of Donald Trump be merely a one-off last desperate gasp of the last remnants of the saner children of the Greatest Generation to stave off disaster or will it be the harbinger of American revival?

As Tina Turner sang it "Will our story shine like a light, or end in the dark?!"

With that I bid you,

Have a great weekend,

In this particular case, it is foreign sourced and indoctrinated and indebted college graduates are lapping the idea of free shit up. It isn't really a popular movement from the bottom up but rather an affectation of a particular subset of big city liberals turning leftist because they won't do as well as their parents.

Worthless degrees, massive student loan debt, high taxes in urban areas, and expensive living in cities due to illegal influx are to blame.

Probably yes but also in the context that every Socialist government inevitably becomes ridden with cronyism, dysfunction, and outright theft of public taxes. No socialist government actually 'works', it can only exist as long as wealth in society is there to be looted to pay off the masses for a time. And inevitably, the biggest beneficiaries of such governments are the El Presidente and their governing circle where they loot the public treasury and take bribes (Petro, Maduro, Morales, Lula, every past Mexican President, etc. have all become fabulously wealthy from that).

111 There is nothing bewildering about the shift toward socialism. It only appears to be happening rapidly in the sense that the flush of blossoms of on a cherry tree appear in a matter of days.

The desiccated monkey skeletons of the boomer Left spent 50 years in power, governing as a mafia that jealously clutched their political monopoly with increasingly bony old claws. At the same time, they weaponized cultural and educational institutions to carefully create the hyper-Left Monster Babies that pushed their opposition into a position of submission, and bullied the general population into accepting their gangster rule as somehow "moderate."

Their rule was so long and so total and so successful, that these Monster Babies are a flat-out supermajority of people under 50. Time is a cruel master, and the boomers are making their shambolic exit from the public arena, leaving these Jacobins as their only possible successors.

The tree is blooming right now. You'll hate the taste of its fruit.

They are perfectly ok with Israel taking out Hezbollah but aren't going to stick their necks out to do it themselves. They got burned in the 80's for that. Same with the Druze and even Sunnis.

The Shi'a percentage of Lebanon was nearly 50 percent last time I checked and they are predominately in the Southern part of Lebanon and some precincts of Beirut. That is the fount of Hezbollah.

I don’t think it’s due to envy; rather the reason Euro governments (and their controlled media outlets) are against AC is because they have *never* built their energy supply close to what American users take for granted.

If even half the people there had AC and used it, they would easily crash the grid. I believe that a lot of the “global warming” nonsense is just an endlessly repeated excuse which the governments use to shield their incredible incompetence.

Socialism is always the refuge of the lazy, mediocre, and envious, among us even back to the time of Aesop. Ant and Grasshopper is illustrative tale of the mindset.

So you get some wannabe elites that are locked out of the current power structure, they figure out promising something for nothing will get votes to get into power and the lazy/disaffected to vote for them. The funny thing as society gets poorer as the new 'socialists' go quite well in improving their personal financial conditions.

The positive side - it’s only “blooming” in those portions of the country that are dying, which may not be apparent if you’re unfortunate enough to still live in those areas.

It’s certainly not the case in Texas or Florida. You might say “well those are just two states” but given recent trends, it is not a stretch to say that within about 20 years, half of the wealth of the entire country is going to be based in those 2 states (wealth moves to where it is treated well). And places like Cali, NY, and Illinois will just be fading cesspools of decay and abandonment.

ERCOT dominant peak season is Summer, main driver is A/C

Winter demand in Western Europe is consistently 35% HIGHER in winter than summer

That is because most people grow up in a socialist economy--e.g. the family. The parents work to provide for the kids (From each according to his abilities) and those kids consume a lot of what their parents worked for (to each according to their needs). The missing formula is love but one cannot 'love' innumerable masses, it simply does not scale. A form of socialism works in a family because the parents love (or should) their children.

It doesn't work very well as you scale up-unless you are something like a monastery/abbey, the military, or some other community united around one purpose with enforceable discipline ejecting those not willing to live like that.

212 I'm willing to try socialism here in America.

The class divide has grown too large and the effects of inflation have made basic things like purchasing a house and raising a family, the underpinnings of society, out of reach for both my generation and the generations behind me.

Socialism is not a good system, but the government has failed to important anti-trust laws, usury laws, and control the printing of fiat currency that has left the old generation wealthy, a handful of corporations in control of everything, and mercantilism is rampant.

The failure of the American government to properly administrate the capitalist system here has left us with little alternative but to turn to more heavy handed governmental systems and the seizure of privately held capitol.

I wish it weren't this way, but the greed of Boomers has forced our hand.

Family takes the selfishness of individuals and directs it into the ones you love, so you are selfishly protecting and caring for your loved ones. As you wrote, that DOES NOT scale up to entire populations, because, again, people, at their very core, are selfish and lazy.
Capitalism, despite it's flaws, leverages this selfishness to positive ends. You don't want you or your family to starve, so you work to eat. You want stuff other folks have (yes, envy is a sin), but to get it, you have to work harder and provide goods and services others want. Socialism has none of these incentives.

They have a story about a goddess of vegetation kidnapped by an underworld god causing the world to have seasons.

Now, obviously this invites parallels to Persephone from Greek myth and while the Persephone story has parallels all over the middle east those cultures had ties with Greece so that isn't surprising.

But the Aztecs? Supposedly the American Indians came over 10-30k years ago and came from north east Asia so they shouldn't have shared myths and for example the Mongolian people do NOT have a Persephone myth.

299 Socialism has none of these incentives.

Yep. Work in a capitalist system creating more goods and services and you get more goods and services.

Work in a socialist system creating more goods and services and you get 1/330millionith of the goods and services you produced.

The incentives in socialism then say "don't work it isn't worth it"

I can kind of sympathize with the plight of college age yutes--they were promised all kinds of bullshit from their parents, corporations, K12, society, and colleges. Like the college degree will open the key to the career you want.

The truth is that colleges in their best incarnation were grounded in teaching students how to think. As they became more watered down in the Humanities into socialist indoctrination camps, the practical degrees sprung up--business, comp sci, STEM, etc. etc.

And those in turn were watered down, turned into socialist bootcamps, etc.

So an indebted kid with credentials, a massive chip on their shoulder from socialist indoctrination from education, and a disdain for manual work but an instant desire for an executive position, come out and find out the world does not work that way.

Don't go to college because you want a 'job' that pays well without working. For many males, they would do better to work at whatever jobs rather than go straight to college anyway. I promise you that colleges will take your money any time you are ready to spend it.

There is a funny aspect to this.

Imagine some popular Euro director were to make a film about a young Muslim in Gaza who sees the Muslims around him killed by "Jewish colonizers" and then reacts with "anti-colonial" violence. It would win awards and be the talk of Europe.

But Jews have lived in Israel for all of recorded history with Muslims showing up much later...as colonizers.

Springer bought out Naturwissenschaften, the journal which had published Planck's papers in the 1940s. The papers got retracted in 2011.
One was "Sinn und Grenzen der exakten Wissenschaft". This was an opinion / philosophical piece which Planck was floating to other journals. Naturwissenschaften at the time didn't care. Springer, now, cares.
Didn't stop Springer from charging $40 for the retracted pdf though. The empty pdf. We're serious.

That's fracking we-todd-did...Yes, fracking can cause earthquakes (like in Oklahoma and Texas), but were they even fracking anywhere near the epicenter? And how much fracking? Remember, faults already exist, already have tension. And Venezuela has a history of large quakes. A 200 year delay is not unheard of for faults in some areas (Cascadia has a 300 to 500 year repeat on its massive subduction quakes)...I wonder what archaeoseismology has been done in the region to substantiate the frequency of occurrence...

I've seen videos where young folks bemoan the fact that they can't have the "good life" because jobs don't pay enough while they have a smart phone, two tablets, three flat screen TVs and a coffee table covered in takeout and coffee flavored sugar.

The younger generation wants what they THINK Boomers had plus everything that Boomers created. They want it now, and they want it handed to them.

AI is probably going to eliminate a lot of those white collar jobs currently going to college educated females. And government has reached a point where a lot of the blue states are overextended as is Uncle Sam--those gubmint air conditional easy jobs are likely to decline in the coming years.

Too many young women are going to college now in quantity as colleges, will incur massive debts, and come out with declining job prospects. E.g. teaching jobs going away due to declining enrollments (the baby dearth), governments retrenching on employment, service industries using AI instead of new hires, fewer DEI and HR jobs, less requirement for paperwork jobs, etc. etc. And that means female voting will start to decline as well. Voting rates in genera decline as poverty increases because of personal economic instability. Women are just a bit behind the males in the economic shift is all.

The males willing to do hard manual trade labor will still get jobs as AI doesn't build houses, doesn't dig ditches, doesn't redo the wiring, fix the cars, etc.

And the reason is too many college degrees for fewer jobs that need them.

Perhaps that's for later.

You deal with the closest alligator to your canoe first. That alligator is the deliberate, unchecked, forcible installation of violent Muslims onto Western societies.

Without reading or listening to ANYTHING about the film, I wonder if the main character's moment of self-reflection can only come after the problem has been solved.

Sometimes, the fastest way out is 'through.'

Yep. Work in a capitalist system creating more goods and services and you get more goods and services.

Work in a socialist system creating more goods and services and you get 1/330millionith of the goods and services you produced.

The incentives in socialism then say "don't work it isn't worth it"

You can't inherit "The World My Parents Lived In" any more than you can inherit your father's skill as a welder. If you're patient and diligent, and you let your father teach you how to weld without being a snotty know it all shit and telling him he actually sucks at welding, you can have that. But you don't get to sit in a filthy apartment dirt poor complaining that your father didn't give you a job as a master welder in a gift-wrapped box for your eighteenth birthday just because that's what he was.

Eh, useful in some contexts but not the way people usually employ them. Shorthand heuristic for life experiences around events differ by generations. But the danger in any statistical model is to attribute all the causal relationships to just one variable--e.g. the Boomers are the source of all evils. Or that the Greatest Generation was.

Each generation has to live with past mistakes of their ancestors and yet confront whatever challenges exist in their time. Or simply roll over and die because the next generation will simply step over their corpse on the way to the future.

The most pernicious tendency for a lot of folks is sunk costs and looking backward to figure out who to blame. It is far better to look forward and what to fix today than marinating in grievances.

That gets you stuck in the trap that most of the world has adopted. Historical grievances become destructive.
