65 From AmericanArt.si.edu:

"George Tooker grew frustrated with the bureaucracy while trying to obtain building permits for a house he bought in New York. He painted several images that show “faceless” government workers and run-down people getting nowhere (Garver, George Tooker, 1985). The clinical interior of The Waiting Room evokes the conformity of the 1950s and emphasizes the pale, drawn expressions on the figures. The people stand in numbered boxes, evoking ideas of standardization that force people into predefined categories. The man on the left appears to be in charge of the “sorting,” creating a sinister view of government scrutiny."

67 I never did figure out why the 50's were demonized as the time of conformity, worse than the 40's or the early 60's. There was conformity imposed by large corporations that needed a simplified workforce, and there was the conformity of everyone buying from the same Sears, Brooks Brothers, and Montgomery Wards array of clothing and housewares, but that was more a function of the war production moving to consumer goods in the only way it could: massive production of standard goods since that was what war production was all about.

Socially and politically, of course, there was also the issue of moving out of the wartime economy and regimentation, and of course the ever lasting confusion of "freedom of choice" being conflated with "freedom of choosing to be free of consequences" which is always with us.

Where the hell would you hang this thing? Unless it's a story illustration about the futility of existence, what was the point of creating it.

The final nail in its coffin was on his Wiki page. He's getting the National Medal of Art from George W. Bush which confirms my opinions about some arts councils and Bush. Those opinions are not complimentary.

83 Then again, I worked for years in a Herman Miller cubical. At one point they "densified" the floor, everyone had their cube reduced in size. Then they decided to not to hire new workers. After six months management decided they didn't like the empty desks, so they moved another unit that was slightly too large to those desks, leaving most of another floor empty.
Which they then moved people around to clear a whole floor out and rented it out to another agency until the other agency decided they hated our building as much as we did and relocated.

If you push them on what they mean by the past it is...the 1950s.

Reports say Texas recruits ill from outbreak, which comes weeks after defense secretary made flu vaccine optional...only about 40% of recruits opted to get vaccinated...About 46% of adults were vaccinated against influenza in the 2025-26 cold season, according to the CDC...

What part of military readiness would even begin to question mandatory vaccination? Even if you only wanted them to focus on being “lethal” like Hogshead you got to think a flu going around would harm performance.

I would bet money he got the vaccine himself. It’s just about fucking over everyone below him—as is the MAGA way.

all the twatwaffles who rallied against the COVID vaccinations still go it. Marjorie Trailer Queen basically admitted as much when seh claimed "hippo" regulations meant reports couldn't ask her her vaccination status.

Getting a yearly vaccine with virtually no side effects for most people is an absurd overreaching mandate? F outta here with that nonsense.

108 >>> I never did figure out why the 50's were demonized as the time of conformity, worse than the 40's or the early 60's.

I am always told about office parties before my time and how they were at every company, regardless of big or small, basically bacchanalian orgies before modern hr. I was told this all stopped around the 80s. I didn't start working corporate until the 90s and it was all 100% buttoned down by then. So I can't even imagine what they were expecting for less conformity.

109 I had to go to Walmart to return something recently. They have the same line for returns and money orders/transfers

As I was waiting in line I noticed most of the people in front of me were hispanic looking and not carrying return items.

Each person was transferring money to Latin America. And it was comical because the tiny Muslim woman working the register could barely speak English and the hispanic customers could also barely speak English so there was a lot of handwaving and trying to show her a code on their phones.

133 A tombstone for Obamaism.

What it resembles most, I’d argue, is a mausoleum, the Obamausoleum, if you will. The tower is clad in New Hampshire granite, rises in a faceted, asymmetrical mass with almost no windows, and looms over a grassy public park. It even has words carved near the top, giving the whole thing the unmistakable air of the world’s largest headstone. But what it marks — unintentionally — is the final resting place of Obamaism: a politics after politics, a monument to the fantasy that if enough institutions speak pleasant bromides in a reassuring voice, if politicians act like noble characters from The West Wing, some ineffable thing called “the arc of the moral universe” will bend and everyone wins. Who needs culture war when you can have culture peace?...

What he offered instead was the thin gruel of himself: Obama as symbol, Obama as cultural ascendance, Obama as proof that America had already become better simply by recognizing him.

I wasn't sure why they didn't see us and then go back to that poor bastard but I cut them some slack.

Talking Heads

Wikipedia, In David Bowman's book This Must Be the Place: The Adventures of Talking Heads in the Twentieth Century (2001), Byrne is quoted as describing the genesis of the song:

David wrote nine of the album's eleven tracks. Two numbers came out of jamming. The first would be called "Life During Wartime." David's lyrics describe a Walker Percy-ish post-apocalyptic landscape where a revolutionary hides out in a deserted cemetery, surviving on peanut butter. "I wrote this in my loft on Seventh and Avenue A," David later said, "I was thinking about Baader-Meinhof. Patty Hearst. Tompkins Square. This is a song about living in Alphabet City."[8]

Record World called it "a brilliant futuristic treatise on urban guerilla warfare."[9]

258 Late to the morning threads, but wanted to say that I agree with this take on Fauci and COVID:

115 My take on Fauci/COVID:

Fauci had for a while wanted to make a general coronavirus vaccine as he saw this as a major success for his career. Because GoF research had been banned in the US he sent money through his flunkie Daszak to do the research in China.

China then did its normal low level of quality control and had the frankenvirus they made escape. They intentionally spread it to Europe and the US, used it to clamp down on Hong Kong protests, and worked with the Dems here to amplify fear as a weapon against Trump but this was opportunistic not an intentional release.

When Fauci found out about COVID he knew immediately it was his virus, which is why he went right away into cover your ass mode. Now remember his goal in all this was a COVID vaccine - so he went to his partners who told him their vaccine was just about ready to go anyway but they lied - faking both the effectiveness and safety tests.

Which led to the Biden junta which in turn worked with Fauci to cover up the origins of the virus and the ineffectiveness and danger of the clot shot.
