"The painting "Sleep and His Half-Brother Death" by John William Waterhouse symbolizes the relationship between the Greek gods Hypnos (Sleep) and Thanatos (Death), representing the duality of life and death. The figure of Sleep is depicted in light, while Death is shrouded in darkness, highlighting the contrast between the two states."
Poppies: The figure of Sleep holds poppies, which symbolize narcosis and dreamlike states, further enhancing the theme of sleep and its connection to mortality. Waterhouse painted this work after the loss of his two younger brothers to tuberculosis, adding a personal layer of grief and reflection on mortality to the piece. It was also his first exhibit at the Royal Academy, marking an important moment in his artistic career Posted by: redridinghood at June 17, 2026 09:43 AM (NpAcC) 43

Sleep and His Half Brother Death
John William Waterhouse Oh, my. This was Waterhouse's first Royal Academy exhibit, painted in 1874, after both of his younger brothers died of tuberculosis. I'd say 'well done,' but I couldn't hang today's art selection. The MythologyIn Greek mythology, Hypnos (Sleep) and Thanatos (Death) are twin brothers, born to Nyx (the goddess of the Night) and Erebos (the god of Darkness). Because sleep and death are physically and visually so similar—a motionless, dreamlike state of rest—the ancients frequently grouped them as twin expressions of mortal peace and cessation. But Muldoon rules, as always: 34. Search Their Pockets for Loose Change - a limerick The twin brothers 'Sleep' and 'Death' Shearer Had similarities that grew ever nearer So, how to tell the diff? But I think a lot of people want regime change in Teheran and that is simply not something bombing can give you. It takes boots on the ground unless the people of Iran do it themselves. I recall reading about the main police forces where these things happened were under the same agency (different forces, same policy makers to follow). So, I went down an X rabbit hole trying to find the particulars. While I couldn't find that post, I saw this one. A father tried to rescue his daughter. Instead of helping him, the police arrested the father! This wasn't the only incident I read of this happening, but it does make things even more nefarious and evil. From Andy Ngo:
US Attorney for Minnesota Daniel Rosen announced that the defendants are allegedly involved with Twin Cities Direct Action, later renamed Direct Action Minnesota, or "DAMN," a collective that organizes anti-ICE operations across the Minneapolis area. The 94-page indictment alleges the cell trained extremists in surveillance, rapid mobilization, shield tactics, blockade operations, and methods designed to interfere with federal immigration enforcement. The indictment also identifies the Black Cat Workers Collective, a Minneapolis-based Antifa affinity group, as a key component of the network. The group promotes militant tactics, physical confrontation, and revolutionary political objectives while organizing actions against ICE and law enforcement, according to prosecutors. . . The defendants have been charged with conspiracy to impede or injure federal agents and officers, alleging they worked together from January through June 2026 to prevent ICE and other Department of Homeland Security personnel from carrying out federal duties. 246 It just so happened that their leadership needed to be vaporized to accomplish the 'no nukes' goal he DID set.
Posted by: Sponge They were stupid enough to flaunt having enough highly enriched uranium to build a dozen bombs in negotiations. From 60 percent, it is merely a couple of weeks to refine that up to bomb grade. That is what led to the more widespread strikes in Iran. Regime change failed as the people that would lead such a thing got killed in January and February before we struck again, the rest are a lot more cautious now. And the Kurds in Iran apparently betrayed the cause by keeping and selling the arms and Starlinks that were destined for the Iranian resistance. So the idea of bombing the regime until the regime changes just was not going to happen and Trump is NOT going to send troops into Iran in a shooting war to retrieve the Uranium. That left destroying the civil infrastructure--power plants, water systems, transportation, and oil export facility at Kharg Island. That is what we hold in reserve along with blockade. So we negotiate again for now and MOU is simply what each side wants without providing a guide to the order that each has to occur. Posted by: whig at June 17, 2026 10:45 AM (E4rtv) 290

UK Investigating Russian Warship That Allegedly Fired on British Yacht in English Channel It is believed a Russian Frigate fired at a passing yacht in British waters in the English Channel on Tuesday, prompting the Ministry of Defence to launch an investigation. The UK Ministry of Defence confirmed they are investigating an incident in the English Channel after a British-flagged yacht reported the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich had fired warning shots at it on Tuesday morning. The incident, if proven, would be the most direct confrontation by a foreign warship off the coast of Britain in many years. - May have to change the name to the Russian Channel. All that will do is complicate our basing with their cousins in N. Iraq. Accept that sometimes there are not good options in war and we were never going to fight a war to free Iran ever. We don't have the army to do it right now, it is doubtful we would have the basing allowed to set up large impoundments in Gulf States to do it, nor would logistics be easy either. We can pretty much keep them contained like the Soviets and keep them from nukes but not fix their society. Heck, look how long the Gaza operation has dragged on and Israel has boots on the ground, control of borders, etc. And still Gazans try to murder and kill, same in the Palestinian Authority areas or Lebanon. Iran is not Venezuela nor is it even Iraq. But we have more or less destroyed the mullahs as a political beard for a military dictatorship under the IRGC. The US has been betraying and fucking over the Kurds for decades. About every 20 years we support them with small arms and ammo for awhile and then someone in Washington decides that it's time to screw the Kurds as part of a diplomatic gesture to the Turks/Iraqis/Iranians etc. Combine that with the general Middle Eastern obsession with theft and backstabbing and the outcome isn't a surprise. Posted by: JackStraw at June 17, 2026 10:50 AM (viF8m)" We've seen indications before, but it appears that the practice of threatening parents reporting the offenses with jail time was very widespread, for a couple of decades. Along with charging the victims and other forms of official reprisal. That doesn't excuse the inaction, but shows the level of coercion involved. The Brits have one option left: rivers of blood and going house to house. They are not voting their way out of this. The Irish seem to have figured that out already. I read something on X yesterday that only about 1/4 of the people in the UK had heard about the rape gangs!
Apparently, the their news clamped down hard on reporting about it. I would hope that after the past year that that number has increased, but low information people exit everywhere. And, the the global "elites" apparently want to keep people ignorant with the social media registrations. Except for that trusted source Bluesky. (sarcasm) Posted by: Ann Euroland usually has a state official media of some sort, their main wire service is Thomson Reuters, and they have several national ideologically organized newspapers. Like in the UK, you have BBC and Sky (controlled opposition media), the Times (NYT replica), Daily Telegraph (Tory), Financial Times (WSJ clone), the Guardian (Labor-Leftie), the Independent (as it sounds but leans left), and the Daily Mail (tabloid--celebutard/royals with some nuggets of news). The UK government and political establishment does not have to do much to stop the presses and hide the news. Where the leakage occurs is the internet which is where GB News, foreign news services, and social media including X). They want those leaks plugged. Many of our public schools, some quite well known politically. Students and their parents ignored or threatened for years. The Brits could be like our (us) deplorables. It's not that they don't care. They can't get backing to stay out of jail and really affect change. Maybe. Posted by: L - No nic, another fine day at June 17, 2026 11:10 AM (NFX2v) 352

----- Correct. And that coercion is present here. We'd have a lot more vigilantism in this fucked up country, if the State wasn't so omnipresent and powerful. But daughters/sisters/wives are different than basically everything else in life. I'm not too sanguine about the propensity for violent pushback in this country. But I have zero doubt that if Arabs started deploying rape squads in our towns and hamlets like in England, there would be Arabs turning up very dead on a daily basis. They are just born subjects. It's been bred into them. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at June 17, 2026 11:11 AM (BI5O2) 353
80 million dead from abortion in this country since 1973. They are not the only subjects.

In truth, I can't say that I blame them too much. The US has been betraying and fucking over the Kurds for decades.
Posted by: IllTemperedCur ===== Don't mistake the 'support' the Kurds give the US. They do their own thing in support of their own goals and they are NOT a monolith as people seem to assume here. Iraqi Kurds are not Syrian Kurds are not Turkish Kurds and certainly not Iranian Kurds. Each have their own agendas, their own enemies in those areas, and manipulate their own allies from the outside to get what they want. We simply lacked many alternatives as Pakistan or Afghanistan were not going to be routes to provide arms which left the Kurdish corridor from Iraq to Iran in the Northwest border of Iran. So no, we haven't 'betrayed' the Iranian Kurds, they were never a factor anyway. Likewise, the Syrian types were interested in helping their brethren in Turkey which in turn caused the Turks to enter Syria. It was the US mutual interest with the Syrian Kurds though to minimize Assad's control of the oil areas of Western Syria because that was funding the Assad regime and was also a target of ISIS to fund its ops. We have never supported a Kurdistan fwiw. Posted by: whig at June 17, 2026 11:17 AM (E4rtv) 355
The complex nature of the Kurds, along with the universal loathing of them is a problem in the Middle East and you go from the communist stylings of the PKK, to the smuggling culture in Iran's Kurds, to the resistance to Turkey and Erdogan, to the relatively pro US Iraqi Kurds that depend on us for autonomy.
To create a Kurdistan, it would have to create a narrow strip across four states and those Kurds don't have a common political outlook, don't necessarily share the same religion (Iranian Kurds in particularly lean Shi'a), and would be beset by Iran, Turkey, Iraq, and Syrian central governments immediately. So no, we have not maltreated the Kurds as a people as we promised to try to stop them from being massacred but not to give them their own state. That is the deal. It's hard for us to fathom just how tribal these Middle Eastern assholes are.
The various Kurds MIGHT ally temporarily to kill Arabs or Turks, but when that's done they'll immediately start fighting tribe against tribe. And when that's done, they'll start fighting village against village. And when that's done.... Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at June 17, 2026 11:36 AM (IG3/x) 358
