18 "The Death of General Wolfe depicts the Battle of Quebec, also known as the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, on September 13, 1759. This was a pivotal event in the Seven Years' War and decided the fate of France's colonies in North America.

The battle was fought between the British Army and the French Army; the pitched fighting lasted only fifteen minutes. The British Army was commanded by General Wolfe. Although successful in holding the British line against the French and winning the battle, General Wolfe was mortally wounded by several gunshots.

In death, General Wolfe gained fame as a national hero. He became an icon of Great Britain's victory during the Seven Years' War to people throughout the British Empire. There were lines to see this painting stretching out the door at its first exhibition in London."

National Gallery of Canada: Benjamin West
The Death of General Wolfe
1770
Category:
European and American Painting, Sculpture, and Decorative Arts
Wolfe’s death in the battle to conquer Quebec in 1759 still resonated when West painted this work, its defining image. The men around Wolfe include portraits of fellow officers and representative types – enlisted soldiers, a settler in green, an Indigenous warrior. Pose, gesture and expression – ranging from stoic reserve to tears – eloquently tell the story. Unusually, West added carefully observed details of contemporary clothing and weaponry to anchor the scene in reality, and so connect to his audience. His goal was not to persuade viewers of the literal truth of his painting, but to move them to emulate Wolfe’s self-sacrifice. The canvas made the artist’s reputation.
--
General James Wolfe’s reported last words at the Battle of Quebec on September 13, 1759, were:
"Now, God be praised, I will die in peace" (sometimes recorded as "Now, God be praised" (History Hit)

An interesting lesson.

The scene includes an Indigenous warrior kneeling in the foreground, representing the "noble savage" ideal and British colonial alliances, despite historical evidence suggesting no Indigenous fighters were present at the battle.
Historical Inaccuracies: The painting is a figurative rather than literal representation; only one figure, Lieutenant Henry Browne holding the flag, was actually present when Wolfe died.

129 I'm not a big fan of Benjamin West's style. The people in the paintings always look wooden in their poses and faces. The colors are vibrant and the scenes often have have historical or mythological themes, which can be interesting. But the people in them seem more like mannequins. I prefer looking at the buildings and backgrounds and landscape features which better show his talent.

I won't judge the content of this one except to note that it isn't accurate. I had ancestors on both sides of the Battle of Quebec and some of them would have thought Wolfe, that Limey invader, got what he deserved.

When he said, "we've shipped over 100 million barrels and Iran didn't know" that was just the flash bang that hid the real action:

1) Iran doesn't know what we are doing. Even in the Strait that is key to their whole strategy.
And he just laughed in their face and told them that.

2) 100% of the media source their info about what is going on to ... Iran and their proxies.
Because no one in the media had a clue about that either.
Keep that in mind when you read the next "expert" that says Trump is losing/being deceived/etc. by Iran.

The figure in the center of the group on the left is Robert Monckton, one of Wolfe's commanders, while the figure cradling him is Lt. Isaac Barre. The Indian is not identified, except that he's a Mohawk, which makes sense.

I pulled this from Fred Anderson's Crucible of War. Oddly, Anderson has very little use for Wolfe, in complete contrast with Francis Parkman's take.

200 Heya Horde, been a couple days since checking in. Not sleeping in the car now, thanks to some kind souls God moved to assist! Going to take this weekend light...

The GSG is nearly two-thirds full--thanks to all who have contributed! Once I can access the funds I should be in position to set up longer term accommodations, allowing the stability I need to start making the changes I need to keep this from being a continual issue.

Even if you didn't have the funds, I know (even when I cry and complain) the prayers and intentions of all y'all are probably more responsible for me making it this far than my own meager strength can manage. Thank you for every last bit!

Speaking of the World Cup...

The Japanese team is playing here in Dallas tomorrow.

Interestingly, because the prices are so high for tickets and hotel, etc, etc, that-

people are flying in in the morning, watching the game, then immediately flying back home

Also, interesting...if instead of booking your round trip tickets through Waco(!) instead of DFW, you can save between 1500-3000 for the flights.
