Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside for just a little while.

Meet The PetMorons

mauser med 2.jpg

This was our Plott Hound / Pitbull mix Wiley. My wife worked with a rescue to get him out of a kill shelter where he was scheduled for euthanasia in 2015. We were able to have him with us for 11 years, during which he was a wonderful companion who loved his family. He passed unexpectedly the night before writing this and is already greatly missed.

Best Regards,

MauserMedic

So sorry you have lost your wonderful Wiley, in whom you invested so much love. Thanks for letting us meet him. Keep in touch.

A beautiful, calm photo with a wonderful dog! Just what we need today.

And to go with it, something a little off-topic that I forgot to add to the Gardening Thread. We love our pets in the rain, too:

15 Patsy has recovered from the spay. I'm starting to let her outside a bit. When she was confined inside, I would put her in the large crate by the back door. She would sit patiently under Jake and I came back in and I let her out. Took her to the vets for her rabies shot. Vet gave her the shot. I turned her towards the carrier and she walked right in. The vet was impressed.

26 Took the little mama (who came up to DH and demanded that we feed her) to be spayed and one of her babies was neutered. Three more to go. A friend who gets cats deposited at her house took us in, so they got an ear snipped as ferals. We will be able to tell mama from the baby who looks just like her - the babies are starting to get big.

34 The red kitten in the meme at the top, aside from being a little less kitten-fuzzy, is much like my late Arizona the part-Coon when I first met him at the SPCA in June of '83. Well, he was a classic tabby, I came to realize; stripes on head, legs, and tail, and the rest looks like a marble cake in the middle. This little fellow here is a mackerel tabby -- stripes everywhere. But his "head up and chest out" posture is very much like that of the tiny kitten who beamed up at me from his cage with a "Take ME home! I'm a great deal!" look.

And which I fell for.

There is an old New Yorker cartoon. A man in dress shirt and tie is looking sourly down at the family cat, who is peering up at him. The man is saying, "The fact you were considered sacred in ancient Egypt cuts no ice with me."

40 Sedaka first hit the charts way back in the Fifties, when he was something like eighteen years old. I seem to recall a story that he and Carole King dated in high school, then both became songwriters for the same company not long after? Maybe I have the stories mixed up.

"Calendar Girl," "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" (I prefer the original), his version of "Sunny" (I think it was the first one) . . . all good stuff. He co-wrote "Love Will Keep Us Together" for the Captain and Tennille.

He always seemed a bit effeminate in his mannerisms. But Wiki says he married in 1962.

44 My furry thugs are approaching their fourth birthdays next month. Stirling is still in the habit of trying to wake me at 3:30 to 4 am by leaping across me, kicking me in the ribs in the process.

Little Dagny has been more sociable of late. If she's curled up sleeping of an evening, I can scoop her up and put her on a cushion on my lap -- and she will happily stay quite a while for petting. Perhaps some day she will climb into my lap all by herself. Otherwise, she sits on the arm of the sofa in the morning, and sometimes in the evening, as a hint to her manservant that Food Should Be Forthcoming.

48 Speaking of scooping . . . I've been using Petco's own litter, which is available as a refill once you have bought your first thirty-pound bucket. It's cheaper than Walmart's and has always worked fine. This past bucketful, though, failed to do its clumping job, and the box smelled horribly of ammonia. I changed it this week with Walmart's "Special Kitty," which is another standby. So far so good.

However, I think WM short-changed me. Fourteen lbs. fills the box. The tub said twenty lbs., but the entire contents of the jug just filled the box, and the jug did not look that full when I opened it. Grrrr.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 28, 2026 04:28 PM (wzUl9)

49 Stirling, the big black cat, is sleeping atop the couch on a pad of blankets he no doubt thinks I placed there just for him. Dagny, I think, is in the bedroom window enjoying the already too hot afternoon sun. She sleeps on the same couch-top blankets at night, though she has been known to curl up next to me on the bed.

In the 30+ years we've been out here in the woods, we've had 4 cats. 3 of them have been feral. We found Mr. Rafferty ( formally Rafferty the orphan kitty) and his sibling two years ago. They had barely opened their eyes. Mom had abandoned them. We bottle fed them with goat kid milk replacement. His sibling didn't make it. He's pretty much my cat even though I didn't want another cat. He and Mrs. Sock acknowledge each other but I 'm the one whose lap he graces with his presence. He waits until I go to bed before he comes upstairs and takes up his third of the bed.

He was a domestic longhair named Scarf, because when we met him at the animal shelter, he draped around our necks. He was black and white, so he could make sure his hair showed up on any color clothing, he loved our dogs, and he laid on my side right after cancer surgery, certain his purring and biscuit making would make me feel better. One of them did, I leave it to you to guess which it was. He was not smart, but he loved big. He was a good cat.

The longhairs are always the best. (I'm biased; stipulated.) He sounds much like my late Chekov -- who was never a milk-treader; none of the Siberians I've known have been. But he certainly purred.
