This is Violet the new addition to our household. We picked her up 2/11 from a breeder in MO. She will be our last puppy since Mr nec and I are over 29 and puppy raising is a young person's sport.

We wanted a pup from a reputable breeder since our last dog the Lily beagle had many health issues in her time with us. Violet travelled by air on her trip from MO to MT and was perfect little girl during our 3 1/2 hour layover in Dallas and on both flights. The last flight into Missoula was 3+ hours and she slept the entire time during both flights.

She's been a joy although we're struggling with a bit of potty training since she enjoys pooping inside, especially on the handmade cotton area rug in the eating area. Yes, the rug has a new home for the duration of the puppy training time.

We puppy proofed the house and forgot about the fenced yard which is typically covered by snow in February. We've scrambled to remove or cover many things that she just loves to rip up and eat.

She loves the bed that we purchased for Lily that supposedly helps reduce stress and she sleeps there or in our laps. I have a warm puppy in my lap right now and yes I'm wearing pants, I'm ready for the book thread.

Violet is precious.

Hello, K.T.,

Here is a pic Linda snapped of a goat who was participating, though not without reservations, in the Krewe of Barkus parade last weekend.  He was trotting along with the dogs, Linda tells me, but then decided, "I'm not going any farther right now," and plopped himself down in the street.  After a few minutes' rest, he was willing to get up and proceed.  I guess that's the nature of goats.  He's a handsome fellow in any case.  If he were a cat, we'd call her a calico.

Barkus, as I mentioned last week, started in 1993.  It parades through the French Quarter on the Sunday prior to the Sunday before Fat Tuesday, and it's always fun.  Themes in the past have been "Jurassic Bark," "Welcome to the Flea Market," "Joan of Bark," and "007: From Barkus With Love."  This year's was "Wicked and Wagged."

23 Jolly afternoon, Pet Folken!

Nurse . . . your son's Pippin is a kitten? He looks quite a bit bigger than that, adult-sized. Though I still call little Dagny, almost age four now, a "kitten" because she is smaller than big black Stirling.

He was sleeping with me just now. And . . . Dagny, the infamously aloof, last evening trotted over after dinner, leaped onto the couch, and settled down between Miss Linda and me. Maybe an inch closer to me, but who's measuring. She stayed for about ten minutes for petting, then headed off on her own pathway again. Amazing.

25 Hey guys,

The cat blog has its weekly update with a possible name for Big Boy.

https://tinyurl.com/dg65258

In local animal news, our county animal control rescued a puppy that was thrown into a dumpster. He was in really bad condition and they weren't sure if he would even survive the night.

He did survive the night and all his bloodwork came back great. He does have a head injury that keeps him from being able to suckle. Our shelter got him to a foster who could give him 24/7 care. He's up and walking now.

He has his own facebook page so people can follow his updates.

A number of years ago, a local couple hired out their goats to the city to crop the grass at a small park near where we live. There had been a story on the local news. We happened to be strolling there one day and saw them and their people, four or five goats happily keeping the grass trim.

I have no idea if they're still doing it, though. Seems like a sensible and economical method of handling the job. Which probably means our city "leaders" have decided to ditch it.

When Dagny was spayed, they warned us about her trying to pick at the stitches and sent us home with one of those cones. The moment we got it on her, she panicked. Dagny is one of the calmest and most equable of cats, but she went ballistic, streaking around the living room trying to get The Thing That Was Following Her off her neck.

We managed to collar her and get it off, she calmed, and she never showed the least interest in her stitches anyway.

32 Wolfus,
Pippin is over two years old, but I still call him kitten. He’s about 13#. He was found in the tire well of a farm truck in a town over the mountains by a friend of my son. Son got a call to “come and pick up your cat.” Pip had to be bottle fed every three hours at first. He’s such a good boy. A bit feisty sometimes, and gets some serious zoomies, but he’s a good boy.

Bill Mazeroski died. He was the second baseman for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 50s and 60s. Famous for finishing off the NYY in the 1960 WS with a Game 7 walk off home run in the bottom of the 9th. Overlooked was his fielding prowess. One of the best. RIP

The slim gray ("blue") shorthair I've nicknamed "Alfred" showed up for a snack twice this week. He knows me by sight and will follow me, or race ahead of me to my door, from my car or the back parking lot where the dumpster is located. He never eats much, maybe half a scoop at any one time, but squeaks and bumps against me. We suspect he has a home (sort of) and is allowed to roam. He seems to want attention from humans as much as he does food.

I leave the door open and the screen door shut while I pour him a little bit of dry food. Stirling peers out at him, as does Dagny, but there is no hissing or territorial display. Both grew up around other cats -- in a shelter and at her breeder, respectively -- so they are used to other felines, I guess.

36 About the kid with the vulture: we have lots of black vultures around our house. Considering what they eat, I can't believe that the kid didn't get knocked over by the smell.

Our dog, Luna, despises vultures. I have no idea why. Every once in a while I will hear her barking furiously in our back yard. Invariably I will walk outside and find her staring at our tall roof--at one or more vultures perched on our chimney. I have to chase them off or she will stand there barking for hours.

Thirteen pounds is way out of kitten size range for sure. However, I still called Arizona and Wolf, fourteen lbs. each, "overgrown kittens" for their whole lives.

At age two he will be feisty and zoomy for a few more years yet!
