Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

* * *

Happy Valentine's Day!

Remember that goats love to eat roses - even the thorns! You can share some (unsprayed) petals with them - - along with a few violets.

Meet The PetMorons

From Rex Nemorensis

Winter here in New England. A Snowjack

A Snowja.jpg

Jack, her dog, is wonderful.

AND another:

Their relatives live inside volcanos in Ireland. When their fur becomes too thick and scruffy and it becomes excessively warm in their dens, they erupt from the tops of the mountains and fly across the land covering the land in a thick dense fur called "tephra" that can be many meters thick. If they have inadvertently been fed Taco Bell in ritual food offerings, their shedding is called "pyroclastic flows" or "pyroclastic surges" depending upon the bean content of the offerings. The Irish have come to an understanding with these beings and have adopted them as "pets". They are, naturally, called "Irish Wolves Dread These Beings and Their Horrid Smothering Blankets" or by the shortened version, "Irish Wolfhounds". There are 72% more of these creatures featured in the book "Selinon" which must be true as it is clearly stated in the literature.

In Hawaii the ash is sometimes referred to as "Pele's hair" but the Irish know better. This is what they do with the fur. A picture is attached.

WOW. Amazing!

I downsized this a bit, so hopefully will work. This is Patsy, the latest cat. I estimate she's 5-6 months old and weighs 8 pounds. Went through the spay without problems and is recovering. She has taken to being inside pretty well. She loves my dog Jake but does not care for the other two cats.

I post as Notsothoreau

“Throw out the radio and take the fiddle down from the wall.”
— Andrew Nelson Lytle, Tennessee, 1930

Well, looks like Patsy is off to a fairly good start. Get those treats out when she's around the other two cats. Hope it helps. Thanks for adopting her!

4 Dogs do not think of themselves as lions. Cats have this affectation. Giant, ferocious dogs think they are lap dogs.

Hope you're having a nice Valentines Day.

We had three big updates this week. So, if you haven't read about Big Boy (please recommend some names), then head on over to our cat blog.

17 The goat video recalled one Christmas Day at my oldest aunt's house. She lived in the country and, like all of my mother's relatives, could not turn down any stray animal. She had rescue cats, dogs, chickens, a llama, and (of course) goats.

She was dressed in her usual holiday finery--sweats--with a corsage pinned to her chest. After dinner she was taking the family on a tour of the menagerie and stepped inside the fence to introduce everyone to the head mama goat--who immediately began chowing down on the corsage. Everyone erupted into laughter and it became part of family Christmas lore.

When I was a kid you saw lots of Great Danes; these days, not so much. I read they don't need that much space, unlike herders and shepherds. They're basically big couch potatoes. Is this true?

All dachshunds were bred to be mighty warriors.

Their original job, and hence their body shape, was to go into badger dens and kill or drag out the badger for killing.

I believe that's why when you see dachshunds on a walk, they look proud and confident, never stupid or goofy.

Yep. My brother's dachshund had the bloodlust. He would go after much, much larger dogs, no matter how badly he lost. He would also rip the throats out of possums in their back yard.

36 When I said you could share a rose and violet with a goat, I meant YOU could eat the petals, too.

Violets are probably tastier for people, and goats are browsers, not grazers. So roses are a natural for them.

People do like some rose hips, though.

37 And, after I'd gotten the call that Patsy was okay, I discovered that Mr Trouble had swallowed a plastic bag. I was able to remove what was out, but thought there might be more vet worked us in, sedated him and believes he got the rest of it. The vet seemed to find it amusing. I believe Trouble was unhappy that all the cat food was removed that night, prior to her surgery.

38 Afternoon, animal people,

Fascinating creatures today. Patsy is lovely. In another life, ca. 1978, I knew an outside cat who looked much like her -- my cat Tuna Fish's brother, or so we thought. Tuna, aka Tuna Catterole, was a classic tuxedo, while his brother was black and white in a similar pattern to Patsy: a complete black butterfly sitting atop his nose. Our garage apartment had a parking space outside the living room, and I'd occasionally leave one of the car windows open (it was a simpler time and a smaller town). One day Mrs. Wolfus No. 1 and I got in the car, started it -- and were startled to find Butterfly Nose napping in the back seat!

After that I made sure to close the car windows.

48 And speaking of goats, K.T., we have pics of a Moron-adjacent goat to send you; I forgot this week. He was part of the Krewe of Barkus, the "parade" of dogs in costumes matching the parade theme. Other animals are welcome, though, and this goat was one of them.

Barkus started in 1993. It parades through the French Quarter the Sunday prior to the Sunday before Mardi Gras, and it's always fun. Themes in the past have been "Jurassic Bark," "Welcome to the Flea Market," "Joan of Bark," and "007: From Barkus with Love." This year was "Wicked and Wagged."

Eris, Lily might indeed be of that weird tribe. Little gray Dagny, who is pure Siberian, is so quiet we wondered initially if she might be mute. A trilled "ur-uk, ur-uk" comes out of her from time to time.

She is not mute, though. Linda carried her out into the snow last January, and she (the cat) let out a yowl that sounded like she was having her tail stepped on.

The shower will help with clearing things out once you blow your nose a few times. After that, I don't know. The OTC antihistamines often work well, and Theraflu is good to concoct and drink just before bedtime.

It has acetaminophen or diphenhydramine in it, I think -- maybe both. If those give you the bathroom runs as they do me, then they'll defeat Theraflu's stated purpose of helping you sleep!

69 My furry thugs are doing well. Big black Stirling is napping peacefully on the couch cushion next to me. He still finds it endlessly entertaining to leap across me -- and kick me in the ribs with a hind paw as he goes -- at 3:45 am.

Little gray Dagny is becoming a bit more demonstrative. She climbs on the couch arm next to Linda and slips down so she is partly on the human's lap. I place a cushion on my lap and Linda hands the little cat over to me, and she stays on the cushion for petting for quite a while. She's still not a "leap into your lap" type. But she's showing more of what in another cat would be affection.

78 Cat report (Bunny, aka Manxine) is very good at sneaking into the house. We've brought her in twice on very cold nights, but have to keep her in the bedroom. She pretty chill in general, but an alpha, which our cats don't like. She's utilizing all of the amenities on the back porch - the heated penthouse, the biscuit station/catio, and the sherpa-lined styrofoam chest.

Bob, a friendly but skittish beige cat, has been getting his share of chicken legs etc. Sammy the Fang (who has bitten both Publius and me) pretty much left the group after Bunny established herself. I don't know what he does, but he looks like he dives into badger holes in his spare time. He looks pretty rough.

Not a sensible cat, or he would have stuck around here at night.

79 I don't know how cat ladies manage to get a dozen plus cats to coexist inside.

80 Time for me to take the cats' current wet food tin out of the fridge and run some water in their bowls. And get myself cleaned up and dressed to take Linda out to the nearby Italian neighborhood place tonight for V. Day.

81 Love that top photo and it is so true. Growing up, a miniature red dachshund, all seven pounds of her, was our family pet for 16 years. She loved people since they had hands to pet and rub her tummy. But doorbells were the enemy and other animals were a potential threat to her throne. She didn't attack them but I'm sure she thought they were intimidated.

Me either. Two is my limit, and sometimes I think that's one too many.

83 "gallop towards you like he was going to attack"

Ha ha. That sounds like our dog, Luna's, crush, a giant black Lab named Walker. If he gets loose from his yard, he races toward us on the street like a bullet--and then turns into a galumphing puppy. Luna doesn't like most dogs but she's crazy about this goofy guy.

84 She is not mute, though. Linda carried her out into the snow last January, and she (the cat) let out a yowl that sounded like she was having her tail stepped on.

85 I wore my “My cat is my Valentine” red tshirt to the range this morning.

No one laughed at me. As far as I could tell.

90 Is it me, or are Maine Coons starting to look weird and overbred? Elongated faces/chins, etc.

Not just you. Maine Coon faces have definitely changed over the last 15 - 20 years to a more lion like look. When they are bred well, the look is very cool, but when you get a kitty mill one, it gets way out of proportion and there is something about the eyes that just looks off to me.

Same, I keep hoping to see him or his neighbor pop in to let us know everything is okay. I am kicking myself for not getting his email when he was going through such a dark time.

94 We have a big Mardi Gras parade tonight, I am not bringing Saijo, but it does go by our house so I am hoping he doesn’t get too stressed out over it. Shibas are dramatic.
