Former lurker…. This is Benny, some sort of hybrid (he is much too elegant for mutt or pound hound) and his new best friend, Zuri, our new Rhodesian Ridgeback. Zuri follows Benny like a shadow which Benny might eventually accept or even enjoy, but right now I think he wishes he could loose her.

We have lived on the Tennessee River for the past 11 years, but had surprise visitors this year. A flock of American White Pelicans has taken up residence on the sand bar near our house. There are at least 50 of them. They arrived about two weeks ago and are still hanging around. Apparently not normal behavior as they usually migrate further west of us on their way to the Gulf of America. Here are a couple pics.

6 Someone in an apartment nearby has two French bulldogs. They are very sweet and love to be petted, but boy do they look weird. They look like special effects.

13 The new cat, which I've named Patsy, is entertaining. I found out from my neighbor that she was at their place, went right into the house when the door was opened. Then her grandaughter was outside with her, feeding her bits of cheese. She is scheduled to be spayed on Tuesday. That should cut down on the cat traffic. She's a pretty good cat.

14 Pur beagle,Finn, just turned 1 on Tuesday. We have been transitioning him to adult dog food and on his birthday he decided he didn't want puppy food any more. He picks out the adult dog food and piles it up and then eats it, leaving the puppy food for our other dog to eat. Dogs are so funny.

15 Yay, Pet Thread.

The good news from Rancho Webworko this week regards the feral cats hanging out at the currently-unoccupied neighboring house.

The adult yellow male, Butterburr, the tortoise-shell small momma, Rascal, and all three of the kittens showed up for MiladyJo's feeding them last night. The adults have been there regularly, but the kittens tend to hide from people. We were concerned during the worst of the snow and cold, when only the adults would show up, so, glad to see them all again.

Butterburr is the most domesticated, snipped and probably was somebody's at one time. Rascal has been very wary, but is finally at the point where she'll rub up against MiladyJo, but not yet allow pets. The kittens are getting bigger and bolder.

Always nice to have the feline guardians. Still worry about the owls and coyotes, but so far all accounted for.

Deer have been hanging around the house since hunting season started. They know this is a Safe Space for them. Out in the South 40 not so much: the cowboy and two of his granddaughters harvested a deer each a couple of weeks ago. One of his daughters & her husband do butchering, so, swift turnaround from pasture to freezer. 🤠

16 I'm a dog person. Cats are a stupid concept.

Then someone gave the wife two kittens. Which somehow transferred one to me. Piewacket and Mokie.

Mokie was mine. Didn't like to be held, so I would hold her. And then she would go pee on my clothes. For which I retaliated by ...holding her. My wife called this "the cycle of violence" and marveled that it took me a year to recognize cause and effect. I have no comment than to say cats are stubborn fckers.

Mokie loved to "free the water". Any cup left unattended for more than 17.3 seconds would first go "thump... thump ...thump" as her outstretched paw pulled on the top, eventually with enough force to pull it down. She was always surprised by the splash and would spring 3 feet straight up. Every time. Like, did you notice that's exactly what happened the last 45 times in a row?

10 years in and I finally won the battle of wills. The wife says no that was mercy on her part. Girls are stupid. Regardless, one day she picked up a small red ball and brought it to me, as if to say "I love you so much that I will perform this stupid ritual". I threw the ball, she fetched. 9 times in a row. Dogs are stupid.

What did I learn from having her in my house overnight? That I don't want a baby Greyhound.

18 Afternoon, pet people!

Minnifer looks much like a silver tabby Maine Coon or Coon mix we saw at he local SPCA many years ago. "Rembrandt" was his name. He looked quite regal and spoiled, as if simply whiling away the time until his New People showed up and took him home.

Two days later we went back to see him -- just to see, not to adopt * -- and he had a big "adopted"/"I'm Going Home!" sign on his cage. He was right to wait.

* The SPCA here let you do that then, just ook over the adoptables. During the Sniffle Scare they started the craziness where you had to make an *appointment* to see an individual cat or dog. I have no idea if they are still doing that. Don't they realize it lowers the chances that a given animal will be adopted . . .?

19 Paisley just had an attack of diarrhea. Fortunately she told me she needed to go out. Now she's barking at someone strolling by our domicile so I think she might be okay.

21 As for my two furry thugs: Stirling continues his early morning leaps and bounds, over me as I lie in bed, kicking me with hind paws as he goes. At 3:30 am. When you planned to sleep until 5:00, this is annoying. I can't slap at him as he goes away from me; I can't reach him. And I could slap as he leaps toward me, except I don't know when it's coming. He must simply be entertaining himself. He doesn't get fed any sooner or get any more positive attention from this little hobby.

Dagny La Siberienne has been growing a bit more social. She will sit on the arm of the sofa next to me for petting as she waits patiently for her breakfast. She is silent and does not leap over and kick me -- which makes her 1000% more adorable, at least in the early mornings.

Both are very healthy; birthday 4 for both is next month. They will need topical flea treatment soon.

She does let me have about half the pillow. This is fairly recent behavior, and I'm not sure why she is doing it. She is "my" cat, and chooses me most of the time for a lap, or right now, she's between me and the computer. She is very social.

My big red tabby part-Coon, Arizona, did this most of his life. In the evenings he'd note me getting ready for bed and would disappear. I'd find him already on the bed. He'd start out in one corner or side of the bed, which changed over the years, but by morning he'd be up near my pillow.

Cats may not be pack animals, but they are much more social than we realize.

28 Oh, the video of the black-and-white cat stranded at the base of the wall, with the white one showing him how to climb it at the roughest point, was neat. I suspect the B & W was still a half-grown kitten, and the white cat was his mother.

29 It's amazing how the first time they were left to play on the deck, they immediately keyed on a bird (the first they had ever seen) and instinctively knew it was their preferred prey.

Mokie was a jumper and Piewacket a grabber. They synced together like they had been hunting together for years. Bird spotted. Mokie would jump 10 feet up in the air and give the bird a swat to the ground. Anything that hit the ground was immediately pinned by Pie's strong paws, no one escaped her grasp. Ever.

I recall stepping back one day in awe and maybe a slight bit of horror over how effective this killing machine really was. They had never seen a bird and yet their method was so efficient they never needed to upgrade it. It was if some evolutionary memory told them exactly what to do

31 We took our jumbo-sized ragdoll cat to the groomer the other day. She had managed to get quite a bit of matting in her fur, so they shaved her. We had no idea there was a fairly normal-sized cat underneath all of that hair!

38 Since the Coyote threat forced the cat to become an indoor cat my yard has become a feral playground. I was feeding what I thought was one but turns out to be two almost identical black long hair mangy looking things. Then there is the small mostly white calico who I think belongs somewhere. Then the neighbors cat plays in my yard a lot. She ate the food I put out for the ferals this morning.
I've at least got the ferals to where they don't run at the sight of me. Maybe someday they will want scritches.

Saw it at a local movie theater in my home town near Perth Amboy when I was 11. I always enjoyed the movie. One movie I don't have in my over 100 DVD collection. I guess I should rectify that.
