Getting what you ask for before Christmas, or not

tolkein grief.jpg

As Hanukkah continues, and Christmas approaches, perhaps this is a good time to remember that most political issues are temporary, though they may seem permanent to some people.

Starting with the "release of the Epstein Files":

Walter Kirn:

The Epstein Files are whatever you want or need them to be, I've learned.

*

Trump must be in there somewhere! Remove all redactions! We won't rest!

*

What an incredible accomplishment to make this Epstein stuff seem like the height of elite decadence.

While a thousand Caligulas party on.

*

Matt Taibbi & Walter Kirn talk about Jeffrey Epstein texting Stacey Plaskett questions to ask Michael Cohen during a February 2019 House hearing with the goal to sink Donald Trump. The wheels are about to completely come off the bus.

I haven't really checked into what has been found in the redacted grand jury files. Anybody seen anything interesting?

Our Legislature At Work Before the Christmas Break

Scott Jennings has a few words:

The Week in Pictures: Return of the King Edition

Okay, John Hinderaker went and did it last week! He has abused his stewardship of TWiP and went full Die Hard Christmas Movie Denialist! As the Dude says in The Big Lebowski, this aggression will not stand, man! To restore proper balance in the universe, I am staging a coup d’tat, and am taking over this week’s TWiP. To mix movie references further, John has done a Denethor-level job as Steward of TWiP; time for the Return of the (TWiP) King! Actually, like the Gaza and (prospective) Ukraine ceasefires, we’re going to share power, and alternate TWiP each week. And so as the great John McClain would say on basic cable Christmas season reruns, “Yippie-ki-yay, melon-farmer!”

P.S. Good to see John back covering beauty pageants as straight news (which fits as Melania Trump’s cause as First Lady should be “Make America Straight Again!”, as it was this old practice that partly inspired TWiP in the first place way back in—eeek—2013.

Jingle Bells

*

Our friend Assistant Village Idiot has a number of lovely Christmas carols posted, with interesting commentary. Worth scrolling through both the first and second pages of posts. Example:

The story about Henry Wadsworth Longfellow writing the poem in both despair and hope as he heard the bells.

In 1861, two years before writing this poem, Longfellow's personal peace was shaken when his second wife of 18 years, to whom he was very devoted, was fatally burned in an accidental fire. Then in 1863, during the American Civil War, Longfellow's oldest son, Charles Appleton Longfellow, joined the Union Army without his father's blessing. Longfellow was informed by a letter dated March 14, 1863, after Charles had left. "I have tried hard to resist the temptation of going without your leave but I cannot any longer", he wrote. "I feel it to be my first duty to do what I can for my country and I would willingly lay down my life for it if it would be of any good." Charles was soon appointed as a lieutenant but, in November, he was severely wounded in the Battle of Mine Run. Charles eventually recovered, but his time as a soldier was finished.

7 Well, the left is certainly "in a mood." Not a good one either. It's going to get worse if/when they reclaim the House next year.

The GOP never learns that there is no end to fighting the left. The only "end" is when the Democrat party as it is today is neutered and useless.

Like the GOP.

My family and I are at AmericaFest as invited guests.

The people I have met are truly incredible, but the speakers... ...I'm just really disappointed.

A Leftist ass*ssinated Charlie Kirk in front of the world and all conservatives can do is yell at each other on stage.

Charlie is gone. Not “canceled.” Not “deplatformed.” Dead.

And yet somehow a bunch of people have managed to turn the aftermath into a talent show for who can land the sharpest jab on a fellow conservative.

If we can’t pause the ego wars after that… what exactly are we conserving here?

It feels like a lot of these famous podcasters are eating the conservative movement for engagement.

I'm genuinely grossed out by it.

It's gross watching people who claim to love America act like the real enemy is the person sitting two seats to their right.

Charlie built a movement by arguing, persuading, recruiting, showing up on campuses, and pulling people INTO the movement.

And now people on a stage, who clearly despise each other, are yelling at each other and dunking on each other.

Can we just sit with the absurdity of that?

Meanwhile, the people who want us dead aren’t arguing about which one of them is the purest.

They’re organized. They’re disciplined. They’re watching the Right turn the microphone on each other.

There’s a difference between iron sharpening iron... ...and stabbing your teammate in the back because it sounds bold and gets claps.

I’m new to the conservative movement. I didn’t grow up in this world. I’m not “conservative royalty.” I’m not a strategist. I’m not a speaker.

I’m not even close to deserving an invited seat at something like this, and I'm grateful to be here. I have massive imposter syndrome. I’m the guy who got red-pilled late, who showed up late, and probably still has blind spots I’m probably not even aware of yet.

So I’m not saying this as someone who thinks he has the authority to lecture anyone, I don't. I'm nobody.

I’m saying this as someone who’s standing here with his family, looking around at people I respect... and just feeling sad.

Sad that a moment that should have made all of us a little more sober, somehow turned into fighting like this.

22 Willowed: I cannot (so far) find an "early list" that lists him, the Bishop of Myra, as a Niceae attendee. And if he slapped Arius, it likely would have been mentioned. I am continuing to search.

"Bible scholars" are the only profession built around discrediting their alleged subject. They regularly demand impossible standards of proof that standard historians would consider laughable.

Accounts of Nicea are fragmentary, and since we have no parliamentary record-style journal, we don't know what they thought was important. What we do know is that the vast majority of records from that period were lost. We also know that some likely survived and then were lost years, even centuries later.

This is why discounting documents from later on is unwarranted. They may have had access to books we don't even know about.

When one considers how many "established facts" rely on fragmentary records, it's always amusing to me that "Bible scholars" demand the equivalent of their subjects holding up the day's newspaper in a photograph to give credence to ancient writings.

23 Matt Van Swol @mattvanswol

Maybe I’m naive. Maybe I’m expecting too much. But I remember what it felt like when I started waking up for the first time... The insane excitement, the hope, for the FIRST TIME understanding truth...

So I'm BEGGING you, as a newcomer to this movement... DON'T LET THAT DIE.

I know I don’t have the resume to demand anything from this movement. But I do have eyes. I can see the difference between leadership and clout-chasing. And I can see how easy it would be for people...
GOOD PEOPLE... ...to watch us devour each other and just go: “Yeah… I’m out.”

So if I’m wrong... fine. I'll take the heat, I'm still learning and I know very little.

But I feel like the least we can do is not make Charlie's legacy a backdrop for petty infighting and instead act like we are movement worth joining without fear of being excommunicated for getting it wrong.

That's the "tell." There is zero documentation of this alleged great conqueror who set the world aflame. The Greeks were famously curious about everyone and everything, and loved to write about their adversaries. We have first-hand accounts of people meeting and having dinner with just about every major figure, including the enigmatic Atilla the Hun. Why didn't anyone write about Mohammed's table manners for 150 years?

31 I have a quibble with Scott. Although Bernie votes with Dems, he is not himself a Dem, so it's slightly weak to say his actions represent the Dem party. But only slightly.

To Scott's overall point, Bernie does indeed embody the Dem principle of "somebody somewhere is not suffering enough and we must fix that." I do not understand why that is so attractive to so many people. I guess they think martyrdom makes people good, when in fact a person is a martyr when they were already good and then made to suffer for it.

Anyway, there are some people I wish I could shake some sense into.

Ace hammering Candace is just like his frequent mentions of David French and Jonah Goldberg - a lifeline to her fading influence. Nick Fuentes' entire audience is built on being hated. Take that away, ignore him, dismiss him as "Who?" and he loses his cache.

Conservatives keep doing this. It's a form of retardation. When the left brings up David Duke, WE MUST DENOUNCE HIM, rather than saying: "What are you talking about? Is he even alive? Get bent, loser."

Honestly, it is probably better to not know how politics works. The more my eyes have been opened to how politics works in this country, the more cynical and pessimistic and black-pilled I have become. The 2006 Amnesty push was my first awakening into the BS that is American politics. And the 2020 Plandemic, summer of BLM, stolen election, January 6th government op and the forced "vax" black-pilled me. I'll never be optimistic about anything to do with government again.

Angela McArdle, the former LP National Chair noticed this is the situation with the Libertarian party as well -- and I will add this was a feature of the middle period Tea Party as well, before it was taken over by the neo-cons and smothered.

McArdle has said that part of the problem is how the LP was structured in that it was unable to focus on long term issues, and has noted that they kept finding Feds showing up in important positions where they caused a lot of dissension and drama. Seems like a similar situation happened with the rise of Andrew Tate. The UK is especially concerned with him and the "rise of misogyny". Every politician and media member and institution leader there is pushing the propaganda that he is the problem, while completely ignoring and promoting the actual problem, which is illegal aliens and mass migration of Muslims and Indians who are not civilized cultures.

My assumption is the REAL oligarchy (not the ones everyone talks about, but the real money and power people) all engage in egregious behaviors that "normal" humans tend to recoil at the thought of.

They don't do it to blackmail each other, not in the same way they do it to the nominal heads of organizations.

No, the real rich and powerful do it because they can, and the pact they form with each other is more of a blood oath (literally and figuratively), in that they all know what each other have in their proverbial closets, and it sets them apart from the rest of us.

Come Now, the Nations’ Savior
12:35:09
Come Now, Ye Shepherds
12:36:49
Beside Thy Manger Here I Stand
12:38:37
O Come, O Come, Emmanuel
12:44:10
God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen

154 What I would tell to the newcomer who doesn’t understand the infighting is that Charlie Kirk had founded a powerful movement which was embodied by TPUSA. A lot of his talent and personality was embedded in it.
Not long after his death, a small but very well financed and organized group attempted to stage an ideological and organizational takeover. The public faces of this attempt were Candace, Carlson, and Fuentes, but they had many allies.

But the effort is burning itself out, and Erica Kirk has maintained control. The reason for the infighting now is that all of those who supported the attempted takeover need to be booted out of TPUSA, and out of the so-called conservative movement for good, just as Bill Kristol and Rick Wilson and the other never Trumpers have been. That process is still playing out, and will in part depend on if Erica has the skills and nerve needed to run a tight ship. I’m optimistic.

185 The day I knew I couldn't take it anymore and I desperately needed to retire soon:

I had just turned 5 years old and was walking towards a building I was informed held something called kindergarten. I had been there previously and what not impressed with the experience. For one thing, there were other kids there, and two they wanted to group me with those kids, screaming snotty kids. But at least there were parents to smack the kids around and I thought that would help. But as I approached the kindergarten fear set in, there were no parents, just hoards of screaming kids and a scant few tired adults. And so it began.

They were animals, could not read, could hardly talk, did not know about numbers, peed and pooped themselves. Oh, the smell! And their digestive systems were put in wrong because they couldn't keep from puking. I think there was a kid puking every five minutes. But the worst thing was these other kids were under the illusion that they were allowed to touch me. Which they tried to do all day long. Dirty pawing animals.

AH Lloyd alluded to this earlier today. Simply put, the core problem with authoritarian dictatorships is that by banning all free speech and all criticism of authority, you allow all the constant corruptions and thieving and misrule to go unchecked, until it leads to the collapse of virtually everything. 206 Mama Publius asked me what I wanted for Christmas, and I sent her a link to a full length fleece robe with a sherpa-lined hood, and sherpa trim. It is AWESOME and I wish I could wear it grocery shopping. I wanted something that she'd see me enjoy daily, and I thank her for it every day. I wear it when I hang out in the garage (like I am now - it's windless and 55F).

So, in my case, I got it before Christmas. I gave Publius a new wallet a week ago. His old one tore after about 75 years. j/k, maybe 20.

Mama's going to wait until Christmas Eve. I bought a big wicker basket with a high arching handle, and I'm filling it with various goodies, imported Italian cookies and pastries, some things to keep her warm and the first three novels in another detective series for her to fall in love with, I hope. She's sucked the juices out of Donna Leon.

Racism, climate issues, refugees..anything to morally sell the grift. Then Trump and whoever is backing him came along, said boo and their marks stood up. If the Trump side loses their grip, the grifter elite will come back with a vengeance. If I am the Trump group, I am going full YOLO up to and including military takeover. Dunno if the Trump group sees it that way cause they arent going to telegraph that so I can see it obviously

240 In the "history of all civilization"? Give me a break. No one knows what has or has not happened for stuff like this "in all of civilization". Hell, we don't even know what has or has not happened in all of *American* history. And what we do know, some are lies. Since people lie. Just look at all the lying that happened during 2020 alone for the Plandemic.

This is why I don't believe in any of these content creators, because they have to put out BS like this to get attention. Also, how does this square with all the "polls" out there showing the young generation are supporting socialism. Are churches now leading young people to socialism? Considering many churches push illegal immigration and global warming and other nonsense, it wouldn't surprise me.

Fox News @FoxNews

“Right now in America, we are witnessing a miracle. This generation — young generation — believes in God and is going to church at higher rates than their parents.”

“That’s never happened before in the history of all civilization. That is incredible.” - @bennyjohnson
