Teddy Roosevelt, Heroes, Villains and Demons

Teddy Roosevelt was one of the more interesting of our past presidents. A friend on social media recently posted a short video suggesting that he was insane. From his beginnings as a sickly, asthmatic child, he certainly endured many hardships and tragedies and had many adventures.

Back in October of 2002, Glenn Reynolds posted an excerpt from a speech Roosevelt gave about the Nobel prize he received, largely for facilitating an end to war between Japan and Russia. The prize was controversial. Roosevelt was not in Norway for the acceptance speech.

The Instapundit summary has some interesting details but the link to the speech has gone bad. I found another one. This speech was also given in Norway, but in person by Roosevelt.

Presidents don't talk like this anymore:

We must ever bear in mind that the great end in view is righteousness, justice as between man and man, nation and nation, the chance to lead our lives on a somewhat higher level, with a broader spirit of brotherly goodwill one for another.
Peace is generally good in itself, but it is never the highest good unless it comes as the handmaid of righteousness; and it becomes a very evil thing if it serves merely as a mask for cowardice and sloth, or as an instrument to further the ends of despotism or anarchy.

We despise and abhor the bully, the brawler, the oppressor, whether in private or public life, but we despise no less the coward and the voluptuary. No man is worth calling a man who will not fight rather than submit to infamy or see those that are dear to him suffer wrong. No nation deserves to exist if it permits itself to lose the stern and virile virtues; and this without regard to whether the loss is due to the growth of a heartless and all-absorbing commercialism, to prolonged indulgence in luxury and soft, effortless ease, or to the deification of a warped and twisted sentimentality.
Moreover, and above all, let us remember that words count only when they give expression to deeds, or are to be translated into them. The leaders of the Red Terror2 prattled of peace while they steeped their hands in the blood of the innocent; and many a tyrant has called it peace when he has scourged honest protest into silence. Our words must be judged by our deeds; and in striving for a lofty ideal we must use practical methods; and if we cannot attain all at one leap, we must advance towards it step by step, reasonably content so long as we do actually make some progress in the right direction.

Nicely free from utopianism, I think. Insane?

Heroes, Villains and Demons

Some people think of Teddy Roosevelt as a hero. Some think of him as a militaristic villain. And we have just been through the Halloween season of demons, echoing last week's discussion of C.S. Lewis' Screwtape Letters, which discusses the ways demons can encourage people and even nations to take enticing, but stupid, paths.

Following, some updates:

Last week we discussed how Marxism led to a repressive form of feminism in Russia, leading to a backlash when Putin appeared on his horse, baring his chest, appearing to be a competent man. The early adoption of abortion as birth control became restrictions on abortion as the government desire for more children increased.

And this week, Stephen Green:

Thanks KT… the reference to CS Lewis and exquisitely tailored suits reminds me of his book That Hideous Strength… in that book the evil doers were part of the ultimate bureaucracy N.I.C.E. which is populated with polite nicely tailored bureaucrats… but demons are behind the whole enterprise

Lots going on this Halloween week, but hands down the number one story in the world of memes is the trick that Zohran Mamdani is about to play on New York City. Suffice it to say that memesters are not happy about it. Nor are they happy about the continuing Schumer Shutdown, while at the same time they seem to have mixed feelings about the impending loss of food stamps by 8% of the American population. The key is to understand that the second quote is only true when seen in context of the first quote. Fighting for virtue is only good when the virtue is true. When your religion (Progressivism, Islam) has warped virtue out of line with the Christian virtue that built Western Civilization, then it ceases to be good.

Because there is only one ultimately good set of morals in the world. A few others come close. But only one is good in such a way as to build freedom and a "high trust society."

Also, Teddy was a Progressive, so read everything he said and wrote with a critical ear. (Yes, a mixed metaphor. Deal with it.)

The "Agency" is also heavily involved in political movements. Again, overseas, but apparently here as well.

Many of the programs started in the years after WWII are still running. Our Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard disclosed that little tidbit months ago.

I think they've operated domestically, pretty much from the start.

Put it this way: The ones who are overseas, mucking things up, are a different part of the agency. There are people who have worked for the CIA for decades, who have no idea what other divisions do, or who they are.

152 My PEX leaks are never at the joint. Always in the middle. The first few leaks were in hot water and in a bend so I wrote it off as stress. Now I get them in straight sections of cold water and that is just a defect as far as I am concerned.

Of course the plumbing company that I used to build the house went out of business the next year and came back with a different name. I think this is a liability dodging trick.

I’ve owned homes since the mid 2000s. I’ve replaced a roof, water heaters, Fridges, dishwashers, all sorts of pipe leak fixes, basement leaks, fence repairs, you name it. All with someone else doing the work since I do t know one end of an hammer from the other. And I’m still probably at least 5X better off than having rented the equivalent for the past 20 years.

Remember when doing the rent vs buy you have to do like for like. Can’t compare owning a 2500 sq ft home with renting a 2 bedroom apartment. Has to be vs renting that 2500 aq ft home.

The upstairs bath backed up to the kitchen with access panels behind the fridge to reach the shower plumbing and under the sink to reach the sink and toilet plumbing.

It was well laid out, though the house had other design problems.

Plumbers/builders with a zillion years of experience would argue about the merits of Pex over copper all day long. Years later, when we had moved to our first house and had plumbing problems right away, I raided Home Depot for all the PEX stuff I could get. Did a bunch of small jobs with it. The greatest attribute of Pex for an amateur is it's very easy to just "try again, get an adapter, etc.". So far it's been good, but when our real Plumber comes over, I know he's like "what did this 'tard do that for"?

Bought my first house in 2003 for $162,500. Laid off in 2008 with the economy crash. Tried to short-sell my house, even for as low as $87,000. No luck. Lost it to foreclosure after 2 years of unemployment in 2011.

Been renting ever since, because I have no faith that the powers that be will not deliberately fuck up the economy again and put me back into that same situation.

Sure enough, last March I was laid off from Stellantis. This time, I did not have to worry about losing a house to foreclosure. I also was only unemployed for a month, as I was able to go back to my previous job as a contract hire. But that's never guaranteed.

I've got a flat roof, which mystifies some roofers. The one I got now is a white membrane of Miracle Space Age Material that has surpassed its estimated 15-year lifetime.

The first one was a tearoff, followed by polyisocyanurate insulation, followed by a roll of asphalt shingle. They didn't nail finishing metal sheet on the edges, so starlings quickly began to undermine the roof by pecking out the insulation. To the roofer's credit, he fixed it gratis.

It seems crazy even in a climate where you don't have to worry about freezing, wouldn't the cold water be nasty warm in the summer time? I bought this house in 2013. It was a spec build so brand new but I had no say in anything other than appliances.

FCA (Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles) under the leadership of CEO Sergio Marchionne was great. I think he was the last of the automaker CEOs who refused the EV nonsense. He stated rightly that EVs were a money loss for his business and he was not going to build or sell any more than was required by the ridiculous US government EPA standards.

After he died in July of 2018, the company management did a complete shift in company direction to EVs. With the Plandemic in 2020, FCA took advantage by cutting all contract engineers. After the merger to create Stellantis, new CEO Carlos Taveras then worked to push out almost all American engineers and managers and replace them with outsourced BCCs (Best Cost Country) cheap labor in India and Mexico.

That combined with the then new Dare Forward 2030 campaign to make all EVs, that destroyed the company and culture. It has not yet recovered.

From what I understand, Trump enacted the tariffs to get the negotiations going to:

(1) get trade back to being even across the world, instead of USA goods having tariffs in other countries, but the USA having no tariffs on other countries' imports to the USA and
(2) get American companies to stop outsourcing everything to other countries and bring back production and jobs to the USA.

But they were never intended to be permanent... unless other countries refused to negotiate their own tariffs and unless USA companies refused to stop outsourcing operations and jobs.
