I'm giving my friends back their cat Snowflake Tuesday.
She's so beautiful and sweet but she climbs on top of me at 3am when I'm trying to sleep. It's too much. And I have a life to build after all that happened this year. But she'll be an outdoor cat again and right across the street. I know she'll visit. The house will be easier to keep clean too. So much hair. Afternoon, Pet Folken! Yes, Minnifer is lovely. Ever since my first longhair, the long-ago huge red tabby Arizona, I have preferred the medium- to long-haired cats. They just look more filled out, somehow.
My two furry thugs are doing well. Big black Stirling was just napping with me. He's grooming himself on the living room floor, while little gray Dagny is curled up next to the toy basket. She actually sat on the arm of the sofa with me for close to five minutes one night this week for the first time. I made sure to pet her and talk gently to her. This past week made three years since I adopted her from her breeder upriver near Baton Rouge, the lady who sold me Tatiana the Wonder Siberian in '06, and gave me big white-and-black Chekov when Tati passed away at age 3.5 from heart failure. We had, and I think still have, a vet practice here called The Cat Practice. They have a big sketch of a cat painted on the side wall of their building, visible as you approach from downriver. I used to bring Arizona there, and Miss Linda brought Marie-Antoinette the smart black cat. They stabilized AZ and saved his life when he developed fatty liver disease at age fourteen, before Linda shipped him by air to me in Denver. But . . .
. . . they either failed to check, or failed to tell Linda, Marie's real sex! Marie, you see, was born male with cryptorchidism, a condition where "his" batteries never descended. She had bushy dark fur back there, so it was admittedly hard to tell. But they were supposed to look and be sure. We didn't find out until years later in Denver. I brought "her" to AZ's then-current veterinarian, who announced, "Marie-Antoinette's a boy!" (We still call MA "her" out of habit, and I call her the first gender-fluid cat.) So it's a little disheartening to find a place called "The Cat Practice" could be so wrong on such a fundamental thing. Before I retired, a former co-worker gave me a reference to a cat sitter, a young woman he and his wife have used frequently. I haven't had occasion to call her yet, but I'd think that was a pretty good recommendation.

Usually, we paid a girl from our vets office to look in on them and feed them, but due to some missed communication she was unavailable this time. My sister recommended Rover because her daughter works for them. And I figured, if anything happens, we could track her down. She turned out great.

Sleeping on my hip? My mother's cat Li'l Bit used to do that, once Mom passed and I adopted the little tricolor girl. That is, once she got over her shock at Mom's disappearance and having to live with (a) a new human, me, and (b) having to share living quarters with my big red tabby Arizona, who disliked all other cats.
It did keep me from sleeping through the night. I'd have been much happier if she'd curled next to me. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at September 06, 2025 04:13 PM (omVj0) 35

Posted by: polynikes at September 06, 2025 03:55 PM (EYmYM) I've considered them, too. I'm in a small town, and there's someone in the next small town over that does dog and house sitting. Was thinking I'd start paying her to come over a couple of times a month and walk or play with the dogs so they can get to know her, and then maybe by TxMoMe next year, Mr Dmlw! and I could go together. Our only valuables are firearms, and they're locked up. I think in a small town, it would be harder for the Rover person to be a thief. Too many people would know her. Posted by: Dash my lace wigs! at September 06, 2025 04:13 PM (h7ZuX) 36
Our basement cat Bean - mother to Bravo and Charlie - hates all other cats but is very friendly to people. I think she was Rover girl's favorite.

Wolfus, you mentioned an exploratory trip to Indiana. May I suggest also checking out NW Arkansas? Sure, we have humidity here but it's no worse than Indiana and it seems that both Indiana and NW Arkansas are drier than Louisiana.
Are you completely retiring or would you like some work in academia? Our town has a highly-regarded Christian university and of course there is University of Arkansas. We use a pet-sitter company for our 3 cats and one dog (Cane Corso). I was wary at first, due to valuables, firearms, etc. in the house. Started with a weekend trip, everything was fine, so now we us them for 7-10 day trips. The guys send a pic every time they are at our place (generally twice a day, sometimes thrice), so we have real time updates. It's a weight off my shoulders, but I still feel guilty leaving them behind.

Wolfus, we were in Indiana this summer and it seemed very nice.
We have just really loved the atmosphere in our community. People are openly Christian and are having babies, which is a positive indicator. One caveat -- Fayetteville is infected, but the students in general are fairly sane. We have friends in Rogers who love the conservative vibe. But we're both from Colorado, so any bit of conservatism is a breath of fresh air. Now I'm wondering if you would like Nixa, MO. I don't know a whole lot about the area's personality, but we have relatives and several members of our former pastor's (in Colorado) family there. No, he's my first hound rescue. I love Goldens but the breed is being ravaged by cancer. I lost my last one when he was only 8 1/2. One day he was a happy, goofy Golden and the next he was gone. Couldn't do that again so I went with a rescue. Might be the most affectionate dog I've ever had and he does a fine job pretending to chase the squirrels and rabbits out of the yard.
