Ace of Spades Pet Thread, August 30

dog lunch lecture.jpg

* * *

Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Thanks for stopping by. Kick back and enjoy the world of animals.

Would you like a treat?

Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

* * *

Well, we've all heard of The Dog Days of Summer, but Tuesday was International Dog Day. Apparently, it doesn't take a lot to create an international commemorative day. There are some dog and puppy facts with information for kids at the link.

Like:

1. Dogs can see through their noses

7. Why do dogs have wet noses?

ENLUMINURES EUROPE - VIe - XVIe s. - ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPTS EUROPE

Folio: 37v.

August 26 is international dog day. An opportunity for everyone to pay tribute to Man's best friend in their own way. While dog owners didn't wait until August 26 to treat their pets, this international day allows for actions that are out of the ordinary.

Title of the work: Hunting Deductions. Author: Gaston III (Count of Foix; 1331-1391). Gace de la Bigne (14th century Norman poet, master chaplain at the court of the kings of France from 1348 ) . Illuminations: attributed to Bedford master. Published: 14th - 15th centuries. Manuscript in French illuminated on parchment. , National Library of France. Department of Manuscripts. French 616 Foil: 37v.

What do you think of the translation?

Does one of these pups resemble a PetMoron you know?

Meet The PetMorons

penny paz.jpeg

This is Penny.  At least, that's what the shelter said her name was. She responds to it not at all, so I call Pazuzu, as she has at least some demon blood.

The shelter lied about a lot of things. They said she was a chihuahua, but after a month she blew her coat. Chihuahuas don't have an undercoat. I think she's some sort of weird short-coated Pom, what do you think?

The shelter said she liked to cuddle and be brushed, but that's not true either. You know some dogs are dog dogs, and some are people dogs? She's neither, as she doesn't even follow us from room to room, and when she meets massive dogs on her walks, she goes after them like she's going to rip a leg off and beat them to death with it.

She's also supposed to be on a diet, according to the shelter, but that didn't last long. She found the shelf where the food and treats are kept and she sits in front of it and barks.  She has a nerve-shattering bark like the sound of a katyusha launching, so I just feed her.  I want to enjoy my last years.

She poops three times a day: fully formed, solid poops. I don't feed her THAT much. Where do they come from? It’s like she teleports them straight from hell.

She barks (again) to go out after we've gone to bed. That's courteous of her, but after doing business she has to search the yard for thirty minutes like she's looking for the coven that summoned her.  I have to come with because we have 'yotes. Many many 'yotes.

Anyway, that's our new dog.  Yay.

Best Thief in Lankhmar

She sounds challenging. But she's cute. Hope she mellows as time goes by.

kaylee b new.jpg

Hello Pet Lovers. I'm still heartbroken over Tali going missing in March and part of me still prays she will somehow be found and I will get her back, but today I have adopted a new dog. Her name from the shelter is Barbie but I am not keeping that. I'm thinking of maybe the name Kaylee. She is such a sweetheart.

Buzzion

She looks like a sweetheart. Congratulations!

wild bunni.jpg

Hi Katy,

I guess I can’t claim this wild bunny is a “pet” but, he is a lot of fun. He shows up with his friend once a day or so looking for his carrot. He won’t touch celery or grapes. His friend/sibling stays at least ten feet away from me. I have named him “Bob” (aka Robert Rabbit).

Thanks for your great work on Ace!!

Admirale’s Mate

There's a little video here. thanks to CBD. That bunny is a charmer.

My mom told me a story about when they lived in new Orleans in the late fifties.

They had friends over for dinner, cooked a big roast etc.

Took it out of the oven, set it on the dinner table and they went for a walk around the block to let it rest.

Came back in, big whatever dog was sound asleep in the middle of the dinner table. No roast.

They went out for Po Boys...

12 Afternoon, Pet Folken,

The TP Wall vs. Cats video was instructive about how cat personalities differ. Most jumped over with various degrees of success, but the brown British Shorthair (?) tabby just bulled right through the wall, at least twice.

I think my late Arizona, Chekov D. Siberian, and Wolf would have pushed through. Or they would have pushed experimentally at the rolls and when they gave way, would have pushed the entire thing down at that point. Marie-Antoinette the Smart Queen and Tatiana the Wonder Siberian would have leaped over -- but once they saw another cat push through, would have learned to do that too.

Little Oreo the long-haired tuxedo cat might have sat on the far side and squeaked for me to come get her.

Not sure about Stirling and Dagny, if they would have stayed leapers or would have quickly learned to shove at the wall of paper.

23 As for the translation from French, K.T., you did beautifully. The English is idiomatic and natural, which is better than I usually did translating my Spanish homework into my own tongue. If I'd been able to type then -- and if we'd had work processing devices -- I could have revised my translations into something less like "Since many years I have not seen a rifle in your hand." But we wrote everything out by hand in the Dark Ages, and I had other homework; so one pass had to suffice.

Deduire, says the 'Net, can mean to deduce, to deduct (as in "to subtract" or "take something off a total"), or to conclude or infer. All the synonyms seem to center around that. Maybe these are the dogs that got cut ("subtracted") from the hunting pack for some reason?

Little did they know that they were dumped into dog heaven. The other dogs found them and brought them to the house. MiL walked out one day and found she now had 6 dogs.
Down to three now and off the property after the fire. Charlie latches onto my like always on my vacations. He's a solid good sturdy short haired lap dog, or so he thinks.
MiL says he get's depressed when we leave. I might take him home with me. They're getting old and he's an energetic as anything. He could hurt them pretty easy.
I don't know. We'll see. I'll talk to the wife tonight.

41 I see I don't need to recommend Bluebird today. 😀

Big news this week is that Daisy the excitable Malinois has discovered the water in the toilet. She has a water dish in the kitchen next to her food bowl, and water near her bed in the bedroom, but drinks from the toilet anyway.

Since MiladyJo got her rear wet sitting down on the toilet one night, I have gladly and chivalrously remembered to put the seat down every time (even though I haven't sat down since I got the ostomy bag). Now I am trying to remember to put the lid down as well. At least if she sits down on that, she won't get wet.

Ony the dear old black cat still heads into the bedroom when Son or Daughter bring their dogs by, but she doesn't seem as scared anymore. Saunters rather than skidaddles.

At the empty house next door, the pale yellow male lets me skritch him every time; the small female is still skittish, but the distance she keeps is shrinking. And I finally did get to glimpse one of the kittens as it ran to hide. Theoretically there are three kits.

Thanks for the pet post, KT. Nice critters, y'all.

46 A family of foxes has now inhabited our backyard for at least a week. My daughter is getting to within 15' for videos. I was doing some quiet yard work, and looked over from about 35' and they were sound asleep on the trampoline.

I have three large dogs in a fenced portion of the yard about 80' away. They bark sometimes to let me know if there are dogs or any sketchy joggers in the park across the street. The foxes seem completely unbothered by the dogs.

We do have one derpy outdoor cat that has the golden retriever trait of assuming every new acquaintance is certainly a new friend. I am skeptical that the foxes hold the same philosophical outlook.
