I took a fly fishing class in college, thinking it looked fun and would be an easy A. However, I discovered that the instructor took fly fishing more seriously than anything I had ever encountered—or likely ever will. The class was incredibly challenging. I think I earned a B, but I never cared to fly fish afterward.

Great topic, TRex. I've fished since I was about 5 years old. The methods have varied over the years. But the excitement of a small boy pulling in a trash fish that took an oversized hook baited with a piece of clam is the same as an old guy (me) landing a large mouth bass, on a lure I made and light tackle, is the same.

Fly fishing can become an obsession. There is the matter of assembling the proper equipment (collector mania), learning to tie perfect flies (OCD), stalking the fish (primal hunting instinct) and traveling to exotic locations.
Throw in the history and traditions and it becomes a religious experience. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at August 02, 2025 06:00 PM (Ac/bm) Posted by: fd at August 02, 2025 06:00 PM (vFG9F) 30

As for my pipe smoking/collecting hobby: I ordered a Viby, a Danish brand, a vintage (i.e., "used") "pear" shape from one of the 'Net sites I peruse from time to time. It's shorter than I usually buy, but not very much so; it's not what people call a "nosewarmer." Still, it should be a good smoker. The Danes know what they are doing in pipes.
(So do the Italians and the French, and the old-time British sure did, and I like American-made pipes too.) Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at August 02, 2025 06:04 PM (omVj0) 34

Huh. I've been fishing with Rapala minnows since I could cast but I never knew this:
Rapala is a manufacturer of fishing lures and other fishing related products. It was founded in Finland in 1936 by Lauri Rapala, who is credited for creating the world's first floating minnow lure carved from cork with a shoemaker's knife, covered with chocolate candy bar wrappers and melted photography film negatives, for a protective outer coating. He created the lure in order to try and catch a pike." Aint the internets amazing? Posted by: fd at August 02, 2025 06:05 PM (vFG9F) 36

That painting by polynikes really captures the feel of fly fishing in early morning. Cold temps, gentle movement of shallow water making the only sound, the bend of the rod when the fish is first on, the quiet companionship as both guys focus on the action. he kept the setting simple, not lush, keeping the viewer's attention on the activity. Implied but not stated in the scene is both men talking over some hot coffee from a thermos while they warm up after the first casts.
This would appeal to anyone who enjoys early morning fishing. Posted by: JTB at August 02, 2025 06:07 PM (yTvNw) 39

My maternal grandfather taught me to fish.
It was awesome sitting there in his little aluminum row boat out in Quartermaster Harbor on Vashon Island. We’d catch red rockfish, Ling cod, flounder and salmon. All different lures or techniques, but he was a fisherman because he needed to be in order to eat. He also taught us to dig clams and geoduck. And where to drop the crab pots. Fly Fishers Anonymous.
Hi, I'm Idaho Spudboy, and I'm a recovering fly fisherman. I started when I was a teenager, with a cheap fiberglass rod and a few store bought flies. Then I moved up to a better fiberglass rod and a cheap fly tieing vise. The next thing I knew, I was spending all my money on hackle, hooks, and multiple flylines. At the end I had a graphite rod and was making my own tapered leaders. All my gear is still stashed away, calling to me, but I avoid putting on my waders and take it one day at a time. People like to ask “what is your hobby?”
Do I have one? I have many things that interest me, things that I do that really, I need to get back into. Once I get my inherited coin collection together I’ll head to numismatics, I suppose. I’ve had a stamp collection since 1983…nothing fancy or worth anything, but it’s there. I’m obsessed with all things astronomical and considering myself a poor man’s shadow chaser. Especially after 1999, 2017 and 2024. I need to get into the observational side. When I get a house I need to set up a weather station, and look at getting a space set aside for model airplanes once again. I’ve got a bunch of state and national parks targeted for massive hiking expeditions. I firmly believe that he who dies with the most stamps in his/her passport wins. Of course there is the reading…lots of it. Just for starters. Posted by: Cow Demon at August 02, 2025 06:16 PM (vm8sq) 48

JackStraw, Like you I did salt water fishing only. No surprise considering where I was, Rhode Island or the gulf coast of Florida. But fly fishing a pond or lake on a quiet day is very different: more peaceful, the gear is usually lighter, and I think fly fishing calls for more finesse. One aspect of fishing I love is making your own gear. I haven't tried making rods but I do make my own lures, mostly spoons and spinners, and tie my own flies. The satisfaction of catching a fish on a lure you made adds a lot to the enjoyment, whether it's a plug carved out of cedar or a size 14 Wooly Worm.

When I was a kid my folks had friends that had a cabin on a lake in the Adirondacks. It was a generational home that was passed down. We'd go visit every summer for a week or so and a few times the father of the couple my folks knew would be there. He was an avid fly fisherman and a super nice guy. He took me along on his early morning trout fishing and it's one of my fondest memories. I get the shakes when I'm away from the ocean but a mountain lake is pretty darn sweet. 39 ... "One hobby I still practice is fly tying. In fact, I taught my girls how to tie, one still does and she's very adept at it. I think women make better tyers than men anyway. They have a certain touch."
IRONGRAMPA, Agreed. Elsie Darby comes to mind. Tying any fly smaller than a size six with my gorilla hands is both satisfying when it works and a source of humor quite often. Posted by: JTB at August 02, 2025 06:45 PM (yTvNw) 82
The key to getting small children to pick up the hobby is to take them "catching" rather than "fishing"!
One time around age 6, I went fishing with my brother, father, and maternal grandfather. My father was a purist, and wanted to outwit the largest bass on the pond. However, that day the bass just weren't biting at all. My grandfather was just the opposite, he just wanted to get any fish he could on the hook. So he went back to the station wagon, grabbed a shovel and dug up some worms. We then went to a weedy mud flat that never produced any bass. As soon as the worms hit the water we started getting strikes. Turns out that area was holding a thousand(?) bullheads. None were very big, but my brother and I caught at least a hundred bullheads that day. For little kids, that counts as a huge win in the fun column. Moral of the story: For introducing new anglers, take them to some body of water where they will catch fish. Farm ponds with green sunfish are easy. Crappie spawning in the big reservoirs are easy. Same with stripers. If you are not a great fisherman yourself, pay a guide. They are relatively inexpensive and will put kids (and you) on the fish! I worked R9CA in S central Russia also last week. He's in Nizhny Tagil. If you look at a common mercator map and compare Illinois-Tagil distance to Illinois-Qatar distance, you'd think Qatar was way closer. But Qatar is 7200 miles away, while frosty Tagil is only 5100 miles away. The great circle distance over the poles is shorter to Siberia.
Tagil is the site of the largest main battle tank manufacturer in the world. Also where the first Russian steam locomotive was built. Posted by: gp Stares At Sun at August 02, 2025 06:46 PM (2XN3U) 84

OT, though this is tangentially related to outdoor activities: Some years ago I bought a couple of Wowtac brand LED flashlights, USB charged, for my place. I wanted to get another for the car -- but Amazon is out of them, and nobody else (in a cursory search, anyway) seems to sell them. The Wowtac website doesn't have a "Buy Now" button anywhere. It's a China company; did they decide not to export to America now?
Amazon suggests a ThruNite TN12 V6 instead, and it looks fine. Anybody ever use this brand? Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at August 02, 2025 06:47 PM (omVj0) 86

Favorite sort of fishing story. I was in Manaus, Brazil on business and had a weekend to myself. Took a boat ride up the Amazon to the coolest hotel I've ever stayed in that was literally on the Amazon.
Saturday evening when it was absolutely pitch black cause Amazon a bunch of us hopped in a canoe style boat with an outboard off the ass end and a guide in front with a spot light hooked to a car battery. We cruised down a small tributary with the guide scanning the water for eyeballs. When he found some he dove into the water, did I mention this was the Amazon and it was frigging night, and came up with about a 3 foot caiman. Coolest thing I've ever seen. The topic makes me smile. Mrs. JTB likes to fish or at least to catch fish and she is good at it. But she won't touch bait and she won't touch the fish (they are 'icky'). Since she usually catches five fish to my one, I spend a lot of time taking the fish off her hook. It's become a family joke. When we still used worms as bait she developed a technique of chasing the thing around the lid until she could get the hook in sufficiently without ever touching it.

Regarding the electrofishing photo:
I've done both backpack and e-boat electrofishing. The photo is of the e-boat variety. Properly done, electrofishing doesn't stun fish, or make them jump. What it does is induce a series of muscle contractions that basically force the fish to "swim" involuntarily toward the anode (it's a DC system), whereupon a lethal voltage can be applied or they can be netted out of the water for harvest / biological sampling etc. As you'd expect, the effect can be felt by the fish at longer range than it's actually effective, so fish outside the working range react to it. In most cases they simply swim away. But Asian Carp in particular use jumping as an escape mechanism. So what you're seeing is the e-boat operator zapping a large school of Asian Carp. The ones close in to the boat are screwed, and are involuntarily swimming toward the guys with the dipnets (notice the nonconductive gloves!); they're under the surface and not visible. The ones further away, outside the effective radius, are reacting by jumping- not because electrofishing causes jumping, but because that's how Asian Carp in particular react to adverse stimuli.
