Mostly accurate. The 55 and 70 signs need the "minimum 40" signs underneath them. And a crosswalk with a "school zone" speed limit sign, with a sign underneath of it listing all the times and days it applies. Posted by: mikeski at July 18, 2025 10:03 PM (DgGvY) 7

As that crop distribution map shows, there's a sliver of soybeans grown in the Tidewater Area, coastal Virginia/Carolina. Once tobacco as a crop waned, farmers started growing soybeans. Saw this back in the '70s along US-460 between Norfolk and Petersburg.

Posted by: eleven at July 18, 2025 10:21 PM (fV+MH) Not really. They exist. I've seen some crazy ones. The one in a small town that had a 12.5 mph speed limit. Saw that one, myself. Dad was driving so a loooong time ago. Or when you're going from 55 down to 25 in a few hundred feet. It feels like you're standing still. Speed trap city. The decent burgs go from 55 to 40/45 to 30/35 to 25. Nice and gradual, plenty of warning. But there are some towns which have a tourist industry being the local traffic court. Bride of PI managed to trip backwards and put her hands out to break her fall. Instead, she broke the base of her radius.
They had trouble setting the bone. After two failed efforts, they put her in Chinese finger traps and then hung a 10# weight off of her bicep to put the break into traction for 20 minutes. The ortho was then able to get everything lined up properly. She is fine with not much pain. However, she is quickly learning how many things in life require TWO hands. Fortunately, it was her left arm. Posted by: Pillage Idiot at July 18, 2025 10:38 PM (HlyYF) 98

The majority of what we saw was all in Mandarin with English subtitles. We have a tiny TV and couldn't read the subtitles. From what I read tonight online, the majority of the movie is in Mandarin and full of Chinese propaganda. Won't bother with it now.

Speed Traps: My Adventure.
One full moon fall night a friend and I were headed out to go murder ruffed grouse the next morning. This cop, who had been backed up into a hidden spot specifically hacked out with a chainsaw, hit the lights and siren. I about had a heart attack; when you drive for 50 miles without seeing another car the suddenness of this was a mainline shot of adrenaline. After pulling over the cop, gleefully, goes "you were doing 55 in a 25, you are about to go jail". Me, most respectfully, "The last speed limit I saw was 55 and there hasn't been another one since then". The cop then takes his extra bright flashlight on shines on a white post about an 1/8 mile back, the post that was hidden behind a bush that made it impossible to see. Gleefully, he goes, "that is a 25 mph speed limit sign." After looking at my license and registration, the cop announces, "is this car stolen?" I respond, "its my company car." Not impressed, the cop goes, "got any contraband, guns, in this car that may or may not be stolen?" An hour later, and after a phone call to my boss at midnight who explained that the car was not stolen, was I let go with a $250.00 ticket. ——— I read somewhere the odd or weird speed limits like that, have something to do with jurisdiction. Depending on the type of road it is, federal, state, or local, the money for a speeding ticket fine all or most of it goes into the general fund, not the local county or whatever. Keep in mind the whole economic system is based on an infrastructure that died (murdered) a long, long time ago. The factories closed a long time ago. The tax base revenue generation is a fraction of what it was, replaced by illegals, Bingo and Casinos, and Fentanyl/Methamphetamine distribution. Zombies everywhere. But the debt remains. I'm racking my brain trying to remember some theorem about this. Or that an implication of the theorem is about this classification business. There's always some arbitrary choice that has to be made. There is no "obvious" well-defined way to pick things out in equivalence classes, order, etc. You have to make some "judgement" call, which is arbitrary. Something like that. Some of those choices seem very natural and obvious, and are very useful, but they are all arbitrary. Something like that. Posted by: toby928 at July 19, 2025 12:43 AM (jc0TO)\ Say, you have a cylinder, a sphere, a cone, a cube, a three sided pyramid and a wool bobble, I would put the roundish things in one pile and the squarish things in the other, depending on how many piles you designate, but again, this is a sliding scale depending both on perception of the items and how many piles are allowed. I am quite agnostic about classification because I focus on use, or all the similarities available; furthermore the question here is actually, "how do I develop classes to split these items into two piles" not "what items are of the same classes" The use to what things can be put are far more important to me than any abstract form things might have. I am more of a Leonardo da Vinci in outlook than Platonic in perceiving the world. Posted by: Kindltot at July 19, 2025 12:56 AM (D7oie) 318

The trick is what outcome are you looking for, that is the base rule outside of your control, and once you have that, set your procedure to meet those rules. If you gave me 90 random items and asked me to sort them into classes, i would probably go with what the items actually did: things that roll, things that pierce, things that bolt together, various fasteners, and from there sub groups of metal, wood and plastic. My favorite Redmond, Washington speed trap had an officer concealed inside some bushes along a city street. When a car came by the officer would stick his arm out with the radar gun and get a read. To complete the bust the cop in the bushes would radio some motorcycle cops a couple blocks down the road who would pull over the car in question. It worked perfectly.
Another one from Washington. Coming north on I-5 out of Olympia there's a stand of woods between the North and South lanes. The state patrol would stuff about 20 motorcycle cops into the woods and then place another cop on a conveniently placed overpass to radar cars. When they got a winner the word went out and a cop would rocket out of the woods to chase that car down. If you hit things just right there'd be like 15 people pulled over with another motorcycle blowing by you with his lights on chasing somebody else. More from Claire...
In the 80’s my Dad had one job, bought a house, married my Mum, had two kids; we didn’t struggle. We had same day GP. Ambulances within minutes. Clean rivers and beaches. We even managed the odd holiday. What happened in the UK that’s made my Dad’s ambition now impossible? Why’s it impossible for families to survive on one income, let TF alone buying a house? My kids may never own their own home no matter how hard they work. FUCK YOU CAPITALISM. We ALL know what the problem is. Politicians are too scared to do anything about it. Greed vs Need. I’ve brought my kids up to never judge and we’re all equal. Watching adults get upset over migrants coming to this country…. It’s pathetic. Why can’t we all be respectful, polite and maybe even learn from each other? You’re wasting energy on hating people you don’t even know. SAD Posted by: Mister Ghost at July 19, 2025 01:55 AM (TGPs7 I hate Claire and her nonjudgmental kids. And I hate Mister Ghost for telling me about them. And everyone reading this. Because. More from the legendary@clairebubblepop:
I’m sick of migrants being blamed for rape increasing in the UK. Do you know what changed? The internet. Young men are not being taught that what they see on the internet isn’t real life. My 15yr old daughter has to put up with dick pics daily. Why should any girl or woman put up with that? Don’t blame people, blame the huge changes in our society… like the fucking internet. If you care so much about grooming gangs, then why do you deny helping a kid with free school meals. They target vulnerable kids but maybe if all kids had a far shot at life you could save some of these kids, right? Posted by: Mister Ghost at July 19, 2025 02:09 AM (TGPs7) 365

The Administration of President Donald J. Trump, in conjunction with Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., officially declines to comply or participate in the World Health Organization's proposed "pandemic response initiatives." RFK: “The new regulations employ extremely broad language that gives the WHO unprecedented power," Kennedy said “That opens the door to the kind of narrative management and propaganda and censorship that we saw during the Covid pandemic.” Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at July 19, 2025 02:22 AM (vV6Uu) 372
And one more from the legendary Claire...
Some of you are so dumb. Women who have late term abortions only do so to save the woman’s life and when the baby has no chance of survival. Please don’t make this about pro-life bullshit. Because common sense tells you women don’t choose to have a late term abortion for the sake of it. There’s a thing called adoption for people who find out late and are unable to look after the child. It’s weird because you don’t care about kids going hungry in schools or living in poverty. You only seem to care when the baby is still in the womb. You’re all literal hypocrites Posted by: Mister Ghost at July 19, 2025 02:23 AM (TGPs7) 373
