The new America Party

Elon launches new political party. How cute.

doof-america-party.jpg

Absolutely love what Elon did with Twitter. He turned it into much more of a bastion of free speech. But he's out of his wheelhouse here. We don't need a new political party. We have a broken system, and the 2 predominant parties are symptoms of that. A new party will merely syphon off votes from one party - in this case, the Republican party. The name Ross Perot ring any bells? Then the Dems, who are all but asking for a knockout punch right now, will yet again gain more power when they should become extinct.

As for Elon's supposed better version of AI - Grok, there have been some interesting exchanges with Grok on X recently. Yet another reason to not heavily rely on ANY form of AI. They are all programmed with data provided by biased humans.

Grok later went on to correct itself, noting the cuts are proposed for FY2026 (which doesn't begin until October 2025), then also acknowledging there were indeed many warnings issued. Yet anti-Trumpers will likely pull this original tweet as evidence of Grok agreeing with them.

Read through the replies to see Grok getting defensive and taking on an actual personality. It's disturbing and disappointing.

There are also several tweets from the past noting Elon's support for universal basic income and restrictions on "assault weapons".

Check them out and make up your own mind about Elon and Grok.

Crossbows vs Longbows vs... Boomerangs??

Earliest Boomerang Was Made in Poland, and It's 40,000 Years Old

doof-boomerang-from-cave.jpg

In southern Poland near the border with Slovakia is a cave that was home for hundreds of thousands of years, first for Neanderthals and later for modern humans. Obłazowa Cave has been undergoing excavation since 1985, two years after which a unique find emerged: a boomerang made of mammoth tusk.

At the time, the team led by Pawel Valde-Nowak dated it to 23,000 years ago and announced that it was likely the "earliest certain find of this type of weapon in the world."

Which is still true, in the sense that Valde-Nowak and colleagues now reveal that it's a stunning 40,000 years old and no earlier ones have been reported.

***

That is the rich cultural context in which this object shaped like a boomerang was found. The team calls it a boomerang because it looks like one, not necessarily because they believe it was used the same way the later aboriginal Australian ones were used

Read the whole thing. Pretty cool stuff.

It's that time of the week - when we turn the ONT over to our good friend Piper for a bit. Here's this week's fashion pr0n.

A Century of Americana Fashion: From Melania’s Elegance to Our 250th Celebration

In honor of our nation’s birth, Melania Trump dazzled at a White House South Lawn picnic for military families this past 4th of July, serving subtle yet chic Americana. She wore a crisp poplin A-line shirt dress by Thom Browne, paired with fiery Manolo Blahnik Snake Red 105 pumps—a perfect nod to patriotic style with a high-fashion twist. As we revel in this iconic look, let’s stroll through the history of Americana fashion, from its early roots to the bold looks we’ll plan for America’s 250th anniversary next year.

IMG_4534r.jpg

IMG_4550r.jpg

Early 20th Century (1900s–1920s): Sophistication Meets Spirit

As America roared into the industrial age, fashion blended city polish with rural heart. Women channeled the Gibson Girl vibe—think high-neck blouses and flowing skirts, often in red, white, and blue for 4th of July fêtes. By the 1920s, flappers took over, shimmying in drop-waist dresses adorned with star-shaped pins, capturing the post-World War I zest. These looks screamed optimism and American flair, setting the stage for a century of patriotic style.

IMG_4551r.jpg

1930s–1940s: Grit, Grace, and Wartime Pride

The Great Depression brought a make-do mindset, with women rocking simple cotton dresses in floral or gingham patterns—often stitched at home with love. Come the 1940s, World War II rationing called for utility, but patriotism shone through. A-line skirts paired with military-inspired blouses and red kerchiefs or flag pins kept the spirit alive. The July 1942 Vogue cover nailed it: a fierce model framed by billowing American flags, radiating strength and unity.

IMG_4538r.jpg

1950s–1970s: Suburban Chic and Rebel Flair

The 1950s were Americana’s golden hour, with full-skirted dresses in patriotic hues or polka dots stealing the show, paired with saddle shoes or dainty ballet flats for that perfect suburban glow. The 1960s shook things up—mod miniskirts and shift dresses danced alongside hippie tie-dye and fringed vests. The 1976 Bicentennial turned the volume up, with flag motifs splashed across T-shirts, bell-bottoms, and everything in between, celebrating America’s 200th with unapologetic pride.

IMG_4549r.jpg

Looking Ahead: The 250th Anniversary in 2026

As we gear up for America’s 250th birthday next year, it’s time to plan our outfits! Will we channel Melania’s tailored elegance with a modern Thom Browne piece? Or maybe lean into retro vibes with a gingham dress or bedazzled flag tee? Whatever we choose, let’s make it bold, proud, and unmistakably American—mixing timeless red, white, and blue. Start sketching those looks now, because this milestone deserves it.

------

Thank you, Piper! Always good to celebrate American heritage of all kinds!

23 Elon has been a success at most things. This is his hubris paired with an ongoing temper tantrum over politics not working the way he wants. It is not just because of people not willing to risk it, but because politics just don’t work that way. Frustrating, yes. But solvable only by backing actual conservatives. We don’t need a “thought experiment” with the country, thank you very much.

If my late cousin were still alive (sudden cardiac event, Friday the 13th Dec. 2024), he'd be hopping mad and toppin' cotton about the attacks on the NWS. Alone, bad enough, but the politically motivated Trump's NWS angle would've really ticked him off.

The NWS out there did it's job. Period. They knew conditions were right for local flash flooding due to heavy rainfall in a short time. They put that out well before. Now, trouble is, you don't know where exactly it's going to happen, just that in this general area, something is likely to happen.

When the event happened, and localized itself at some location, they put out warnings, and finally an emergency warning (run for your lives, this is bad!).

Elon's business affairs and starting a political party will get a bit hairy legally. He can be a candidate himself and spend all he wants (as did Perot or Trump) but he can't run for president which means that FEC limits on what he can and cannot give depending on the office matter. Trying to run a campaign through a Super Pac means that there is a lot you cannot do with that money.

A lot, as usual, depends on peace, removal of illegals, and a rising income and economy for Americans without mass inflation.

Can't do both---he can start a new party but that party competes at general election, not in GOP primaries aside from blanket primary states that are blue anyway.

If he tries to do both compete in GOP primaries with candidates and run his own party too, he will have some issues with state laws, lawsuits, etc.

It is easy enough to pull a one off running for prezzie as an independent, more difficult but doable as a governor, but winning senate or house elections has been problematic for third parties for a very long time.

Be interesting for the political historian in me but remains to be seen how efficacious.

Talk about common sense and such are meant to appeal to centrists (who he's already erroneously identified as the people not being represented), who just like the sound of having lots in common with everyone and never having any choices to make because we're all so alike.

If you want to start a new party, you have to start it with people who give a shit, which is the exact opposite of the normies he seems to be courting. A new party has to come from the right of the Republicans or the left of the Democrats (and their current course leaves no room for that).

Perot and George Wallace were running for president but neither had candidates running for lower offices much. Jesse Ventura was one such who won governor. Socialist Party had a Congress critter or two back in the day before 1940's and Bernie technically is a Socialist who ran for the Dem presidency but caucuses with the Dems.

And that is what minor parties do, if they do win a seat or two in the legislative branches, they end up caucusing with either the Dems or the GOP. By themselves, they rarely make a difference because the legislative machinery is setup for two parties and Duverget's Law, if first past the post wins the seat in districts, then there will only be two major parties.

Maybe I can train him to use the elliptical machine....

It won’t help you tomorrow, but the leave it command is your friend. It works on steak, and other dogs, once they get it. But if your puppy understands heel, when you see another dog, just start turning and walking in a different direction every few feet while you have him in heel. He has to be focused on you because he doesn’t know which crazy way you are headed next. He can’t worry about another dog when that is going on. And when you have zigzagged by the other dog, have a party!

160 The meteorologist on the Fox Weather Channel, Ari Sarsalari, really tore into those false stories about staffing cuts causing the disaster in Texas. In fact, the local weather service had extra people on staff during the unfolding of the event. He explained in great detail how and why the system stalled and caused the huge amount on rain. He was really pissed.

In the NYC area, the channel is available over the air on channel 5.3.

164 He should instead focus his efforts on primarying GOP politicians who aren't doing enough to bring spending under control.
Posted by: Sasquatch

We will see what Congress does with the first rescission bill. House already passed it and now the Senate can consider it and others up to Oct. 1 (I think for this current budget year). However, little noticed, but the House and Senate are both doing the committee work for next year's budget starting Oct. 1st as well.

Due to Trump pushing the Senate to one reconciliation bill instead of Lady Lindsay's two bill solution, that means next year's budget also can use reconciliation.

Do it soon enough, then rescission bills can then be made under the same no filibuster in Senate rule.

Normally, the GOP in Congress fail to give a GOP president two years of debt limits (with current deficit, mebbe even 2.5 years or so), in order to keep some power for leverage. The Dems usually ended up providing the votes at a terrible spending and reform cost in GWB and Trump's first term.

Trump II has learned from his mistakes and is playing the political game with Congress (among other things) better than I have seen any recent president.

James Gunn has said Superman is about “An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost.'
The head of the movie studio added: 'Yes, it plays differently, but it’s about human kindness and obviously there will be jerks out there who are just not kind and will take it as offensive just because it is about kindness. But screw them.'

220 Re flood warnings, I think it's safe to say cell phone alerts especially at night are completely fcking worthless. This is one case where I will advocate for spending more gubmint money, mostly on equipment.

We ought to be able to identify higher risk river basins to prioritize where to work first. Get some day and *night* cameras posted on bridges facing upstream and/or at high points above towns, along with siren towers, maybe with a different sound than a tornado alert. One advantage with a flood is we're not guessing the path it will take...

...of course, this still doesn't get people clued in on how fast they need to move when something like this gets close...

I was just looking. Max hourly per my weather station, which has been up a little over a year since May 2024 was 2.15" on 7/7/2024. That's a year from tomorrow.

Helene set the daily and weekly records, but as the power went out, it missed a lot of it, and didn't come back online until 7 days later. And put the rainfall on the wrong day on the uplink to Wunderground, what it had recorded up to then on that morning past midnight.

Max instantaneous rain rate has been over 4" (and the tipping bucket starts to undercount when it gets that fast). Instantaneous is over a 10 minute period.

Around here, rainfall amounts are highly variable. The bottom can fall out at one spot, but a mile away little. And the granularity can get even smaller.

What gets the flooding going is widespread events. Now, you get local flash flooding in low lying areas with local heavy events from time to time.

288 I would be willing to bet that somewhere along the river stuff got jammed up in the middle of the night, causing the water to rise really quickly. We had that happen in our neighborhood back in 1986 - there was a lot of wind and hail for a few minutes, we accidentally f drove into some standing water right past the railroad embankment. Our car stalled, so we were just going to sit there until everything called down.

Only the wind and hail had blown a bunch of limbs and leaves into the drainage system, so every th by got clogged up. Everything was fine one minute, and then water was halfway up the doors of the car. I was 41/2 months pregnant, and we had to exit the car through the windows.

We made our way over to the 7-11 and sat with everyone else, watching the water rise and the dumpster ride the water over the top of our hood.

All I could think was: I hope my parents don't get a phone call telling them their daughter drowned in a 7-11...

Throwing sticks are throwing sticks, the aboriginal ones have different shapes for different purposes. The hunting ones don't return.
You can see Egyptian tomb paintings showing men hunting birds with throwing sticks too. In my experience they need a bit of a curve to keep them going true, since a straight stick has some odd aerodymamics and odd balance issues.
You also want them as dense as possible.

Posted by: Kindltot at July 07, 2025 12:30 AM (D7oie)

291 And then, before we knew it, the water started receding for no good reason - I guess the force of the water pushed enough of the debris down into the drainage system that the little intakes were cleared enough to let the rest of the water through.

In any event, half an hour later, the water was gone, and we got to trudge 6 blocks to our house because all of the water had rushed over our hood for quite a while, flooding the engine beyond repair.

But that is a story for another day...

If you are running late, and the Uber driver speeds to get you there on time, big tip due! If You are not late, and he speeds, and gets a ticket, causing you to miss the plane, no tip, and a complaint to Uber. The check engine light is irrelevant. In most cases it's nothing immediately destructive.

My ABS light has been off/on for years.

Finally had real malfunction with ABS motor running even with key out. The immediate fix is pulling the fuse. If a sensor cable failed then it may be worth fixing. If the unit had a short it may be worth fixing (resoldering the board where needed). If it is fried the fix is no more ABS brakes.

315 So here's my proposal: a daily barometer that measures the state of the nation. Said barometer shall consist of a picture of the First Lady. Nation good= Melania resplendent in American made couture with an incandescent smile much like that displayed in the picture up top. Nation bad=Melania in a leather catsuit scowling at the godless pricks that pissed her off. Nation scoring an historic win=Victory tits.

I haven't worked through that last bit, to be honest. Whenever I do, I pass out, but that could be what I'm drinking. I'll stagger off to bed now...

If your vehicle is old enough, you might be able to snag an ABS module at a U-Pull-It auto wrecker for a few dollars.

Some vehicles, the wheel speed sensors are easy to change, and on others, you have to pull the rotors, which can be a pain on a FWD or 4WD vehicle.

Yeah yeah yeah. Rutte is thinking ahead. If China wants to invade Taiwan, he reasons, they'll ask their junior partner, Putin, to tie up European troops with a little invasion-action so he can have his way in his back yard. This is why NATO's significance extends to the Indo-Pacific. NATO needs to be so strong that Putin won't dare invade, say, Estonia to help out China.
