Do Not Go Gentle Into That ONT

The Art Of War

The Trump Doctrine (aka the Businessman’s Way of War)

As the dust and smoke settle over Iran’s devastated nuclear weapons program, President Donald Trump’s method of waging war is coming into focus. We had hints of what I call the “Trump Doctrine” in his first term as he annihilated ISIS in Syria, but the two-decade war in Afghanistan that he had inherited initially obscured what has now become a coherent doctrine. In his second term, the freedom of navigation attacks against Yemen’s Houthis were once again a hint of Trump’s way of war, but Saturday’s attack on Iran—and the events leading up to it—tell us much about the deliberate and precise manner in which Trump seeks to conduct American wars. Similar to (but different from) the famous “Powell Doctrine” promulgated by former Secretary of State Colin Powell (more on that later), the Trump Doctrine is the doctrine of a businessman serving his stockholders. Explained another way, the Trump Doctrine is the “Businessman’s Way of War.”
To preview succinctly, the Trump Doctrine consists of a series of business-like, iterative steps for all uses of American military force, and it performs as follows:
1. Identify America’s national interest.
2. Bargain with the prospective enemy.
3. If/when negotiations fail, conceal & misdirect.
4. Strike with precision and overwhelming force.
5. Achieve submission.
6. Bargain again (from a position of complete strength) with the defeated enemy.

I agree with every bit of this article. I've long said (and often been derided for) that the only way to win a war is to make the enemy (either their leadership or enough of the population to force/change the leadership to ) believe that the cost of continuing the war outweigh the risks of continuing it. You can't negotiate peace until they tap out.

Wheels Keep A Rollin'

Wheels May Have Been Invented to Solve a Surprising Problem

Imagine you're a copper miner in southeastern Europe in the year 3900 BCE. Day after day you haul copper ore through the mine's sweltering tunnels.

You've resigned yourself to the grueling monotony of mining life. Then one afternoon, you witness a fellow worker doing something remarkable.

With an odd-looking contraption, he casually transports the equivalent of three times his body weight on a single trip. As he returns to the mine to fetch another load, it suddenly dawns on you that your chosen profession is about to get far less taxing and much more lucrative.

What you don't realize: You're witnessing something that will change the course of history – not just for your tiny mining community, but for all of humanity.

The evolution of the wheel infographic is neat:

M.A.I.L. (Medical Assistance In Living)

We’re Better Off Loved

But here’s a critical question: Could the mere availability of assisted suicide be a degree of coercion? In many cases in which it has been used, patients have reported their wish not to be a burden rather than to end their suffering from intense pain. In fact, we know pain often isn’t the issue. We have palliative care for that. Once killing by doctors becomes acceptable, it will likely happen even when it’s not explicitly requested — that’s what happens when you start erring on the side of death.
The Guardian recently told the tale of a married elderly couple in Australia who chose assisted suicide for themselves. She had a degenerative spinal condition. He had, among other health issues, panic attacks. Look, I’ve had panic attacks. They are not fun. They can be, in fact, terrifying, and even debilitating, but they are also treatable, and there are plenty of aids and solutions to explore before taking such an extreme measure. Perhaps the man sought a semblance of control; to take a prescription and die with his wife. Is this supposed to be romance? Are we a few years away from the first MAiD (medical aid in dying, advocates’ preferred euphemism) rom-com? Their decision, their terms, their timing — together — is how such stories are presented. But that’s all a delusion. Not one of us will ever be fully in control of his or her life or death. Neither, after all, is our idea. We exist for reasons beyond ourselves. Everything else is a response to the fact that we are alive — and to that other inherent fact: that we will die.

Nobody gets out of this life alive. We should not go gentle into that goodnight.

Abandoned Places

No Man's Fort: An experience like no other on a Solent Forts luxury break

If you were told to design a playground for adults, and given the freedom to be as creative and far fetched as you liked, even then what you came up with may not be as utterly imaginative as this place.

No Man's Fort is one of three man-made islands off the coast of Portsmouth, built in the 1860s to help protect Britain from the rumoured arrival of Napoleon III and his French army, and also manned during the Second World War.
Now a luxury adults-only hotel, after being purchased from the MoD and opened in its current use in 2012, the fort boasts 22 bedrooms, a bar, restaurant, sauna, large seating area in the centre, plus an outdoor area complete with hot tubs.

There is also Spitbank Fort (smaller than No Man's) and Horsesand Fort, the latter of which is being preserved in its original state and is due to open as a museum in August 2016.

Trips to these historic structures are organised by Solent Forts, who promise a memorable experience to all who set sail for the forts – and I can't think of anyone who would disagree with that sales pitch.

Unfortunately, Covid killed it, and it's been abandoned for 5 years. The insides are amazing, however. Here's a video tour of the fort now

Pure Evil

After some thought, I've removed this section. It's too horrific for the ONT. Have some faux Peterson instead. - WD

ETA: Fine. Enough of you are asking so I'll white text it. If you really want to know, left click and highlight to behold the horror: A gay couple in the UK were allowed to adopt a 1 year old boy, whom they proceeded to rape to death. There. Told you you didn't want to know. Keep details outta my comments section.

Dunno. But in a lot of the Isekai anime I've seen lately, the hero reboots from death, but there's always consequences and it affects their relationship with others. It's interesting to play with that idea to examine our mortality, and what it means to us.

38 That wheel "explanation" sounds pretty bogus to me. They lost me at "sweltering tunnels". Most underground mines are pretty darned cool, compared to outside Summer temperatures, and warm compared to outside Winter temperatures. Typically 50 to 60 degrees F.

Now, really, really deep mines, like on the Rand in South Africa, can be sweltering, but Bronze Age Carpathian miners could not dig that deep.

And maybe that's how the wheel got invented in the Old World, too. As a toy, and then some bright fellow figured out how to make them big enough to bear loads.

There would be a caveat with Arab nations (and Persian) as we have seen ad nauseum over the last couple of decades.

Even when such countries are on their last legs, and are forced to negotiate an agreement; holding to such an agreement just isn't going to happen. It's folded into their culture. It is perfectly acceptable (and encouraged even) to agree to something, and continue to misbehave at will. The philosophy being that non-members are not entitled to honesty or honor. Failure to provide either is what they are entitled to do. I would hold Hamas and the Taliban up to the light as a perfect example of this behavior. Iran as well if they feel the repercussions won't be coming....the minute they do, they show false contrition, wait a while and continued with their entitled status.

The friction would be horrendous, and also, it is hard to make a semi-circular socket with hand tools. So even if the "bearing" has a lot of friction, you have decent leverage to overcome it.

Today, I got under the rear end with a pair of jacks, lifted each wheel, and skidded it sideways with a cable come-a-long. Took two such efforts, and I wound up with an inch of tread on the left rear tire overhanging the ramp. But much better than having 4/5 of the right rear tire overhanging the ramp.

Having got that chore out of the way, I commenced to tearing down the failed transmission. To make a long story short, the rear planetary unit was gerfooked. Sun gear, ring gear, all the planet gears, and the planet carrier all broken badly. The good news is, I have a good one in a box of 4L60E guts from a previous repair.

Jasmine Crockett implied Melania's Visa is invalid because she wasn't worthy of an "Einstein Visa." From Newsweek:

Jasmine: "Melania, the first lady, a model--and when I say model I'm not talking about Tyra Banks, Cindy Crawford or Naomi Campbell-level--applied for and was given an EB1 visa...It doesn't take an Einstein to see that the math ain't mathin' here."

The Cato Institute's Alex Nowrasteh, who also testified during the House hearing, stepped in to "defend Melania real quick." Nowrasteh, the institute's vice president of economic and social policy, responded with a quip: "Not everybody could marry Donald Trump, and I think that's quite an achievement, so I think she deserves credit for that. Nobody up here could have done it!"

Crockett quickly fired back: "You sure are right, I couldn't have done it."

Michael Wildes, an attorney for Melania Trump, previously defended her: "Mrs. Trump obtained her Green Card legally and was more than amply qualified and solidly eligible for the Extraordinary Ability Green Card...No further comment will be issued to protect Mrs. Trump's privacy."

151 If you didn't get a chance to watch the Hegseth/Caine press conference today I'm sure it will be posted on youtube or other places. It's worth a watch.

Aside from the satisifying smackdown Hegseth delivered to the media I was blown away by listening to Gen. Caine speak about the planning for this mission. He said that the task of taking out the Fordow site was given to an officer 15 years ago and for the last 15 years this officer and a partner spent all of their time learning every single thing about the facility in order to take it out. And part of that planning included developing the massive bombs that were used to destroy the place.

They could have laid out roads with gentle grades if they had a mind to. I'm sure their surveying expertise was up to the task. Probably they had so much capital sunk into the llama pack trails that they simply dismissed the idea of building wagon roads.

I agree that the roller-in-socket idea would suck, but you can make a surprisingly good wood lathe using a springy sapling, a length of rope or rawhide, and a board for a treadle.

My great-grandfather used those in his furniture business when he was a younker. Later he had a cast-iron treadle lathe (like a treadle sewing machine). Later still, when electricity became available, he retrofitted an electric motor to the cast iron treadle lathe. I am from a very small farming community. Two stoplights. But when I was growing up, there was a hotel - stripclub on the maib street. Everything was blacked out. Everything was clean, fine but us kids knew something ADULT was going on there.

I took care of my uncle, who was 91 when he passed in February. During one incident, we were talking and he was talking about a strip club in an even smaller farming community,

I asked him. "What kind of strippers would be working in ????.

Best Uncle response ever from 80+ dudes.

Well, I guess you could make a socket by boring a hole with a lathe, and then cut the holed panel in half. But it would be so much easier to use a sapling as an axle, lash it to the cart frame, and make wheels by building up with boards in criss-cross fashion, then bore a hole for the axle.

I'm jus' sayin' somethin's gotta give. And Cuomo cannot run, either. It has to be only one 'sane' candidate for whom people can vote just to prevent any splitting of said 'sane' vote.

It was the college mal-educated kiddies who voted for free shit, commie style. With a dash of Intifada. Not in Israel but in Brooklyn. Scary shit. And we're the nazis!?!

But it seems regular Democrats did not (remember, closed primary). Ranked choice is also a commie vote tactic they've employed. You get to pick, I don't know, up to 5 ranking each choice 1-5. They somehow manipulate/total that all up to come up with %ages for each candidate. With Landers and a few other hard core lefties on the ballot, no matter how many votes Cuomo got, he was always going to be fighting 4, 5 to 1 odds on ranked ballots. That's why he lost.

200 It wasn't mission planning that started 15 years ago, it was a focus on the potential target. DOD's share of this sort of thing is now formalized as the work of the DTRA, but identical work has always been done in the IC and the services under different arrangements at different times.

Not quibbling about language, but implicit in the constant surveillance and analysis of that facility was the idea that you needed to know it well in order to know how to effectively attack it.

The mission's probably been gamed out for some time (what seems to have been a similar operation was outline of a training mission last summer), but not 15 years.

268 I remember being surprised at the price of the watermelon on sale at a church fund raiser in the Disney movie Pollyanna (this was Walt’s Disney, so bear with me). They were selling big pieces of watermelon, like a quarter of a big melon, for 5 cents. They had put the price on pieces of paper stuck on long thin tooth-pick-like sticks put on each piece. And this was a little more than you would normally ask, because they wanted to help the church! Pollyanna was based on a novel of the same name published in 1913, so this checks out. There was relatively little inflation until we went off silver coinage. It only got worse when we dropped the gold standard.

One of my Dad's cousin's had a similar drive up here to Dad's service June 7th. They were 9 who kept in touch all their lives. The surviving 5 all were here, with spouses, and the widows of 2 others were here.

Dad would have loved it. We had the meal at a nice restaurant he liked here. The waitress in charge looked at the photo display and broke down crying as she remembered him.

She said he used to tease and joke with her. Yep that was my Dad.
