First World Problems...

Everybody has seen these or similar machines in hotel rooms, and lots of people use them at home. They are undeniably convenient, and can make reasonably good coffee if the conditions are correct: a clean machine and good quality coffee.

But they are mass produced, and the tolerances in the chamber that holds the pod are sloppy, probably because the capsules are made by multiple manufacturers and are not identical -- and because they are cheaply made machines produced by the lowest bidder, probably by slave labor in some sh*thole in China.

And don't start with "you're doing it wrong!" There is only one way for the capsule to fit into the chamber, so even in the midst of a caffeine deficit I am able to navigate the complex process of opening the machine, dropping a capsule into the chamber, and closing the machine.

And occasionally...very occasionally, this happens!

Aside from the existential crisis of having my coffee delayed by 30 seconds, and the affront to my frugal nature, there is also the frustration of the failure of a complex process that has nonetheless been streamlined and simplified over the many years that these machines have been in use.

There is something called "tolerance stacking," which is simply the sum of the variation in each part that contributes to the whole. If those tolerances don't average out, then there can be issues with the function of the machine...any machine. The sloppy tolerances of these mass-market machines are partially compensated for by the forgiving design, but not completely!

The answer of course is to throw the machine out the window and hire a sexy French maid to make my coffee every morning, but that entails other existential risks. So I will soldier on, bravely confronting the small probability that my coffee will be delayed!

For those who are careful readers of the award-winning Food Thread, you may have noticed that I am not making my customary cone-filter coffee. I have no excuse, other than the difficulty of finding plain old cones! There is a fancy coffee store a few minutes away, but even I, an obsessive-compulsive coffee lunatic shied away from the $100+ systems they were selling. And by the time I explored enough to find sane stuff, I was deep into the convenience of the capsules.

They're totally different designs, right? K cups are like over grown coffee creamer cups, flar on the bottom. Nespresso pods are hemispherical.

I think my topic willowing along in the last thread qualifies as a FWP.

Karmelo Anthony blew all his gofundme money on a house and toys and now qualifies as indigent, so he gets a court-appointed private attorney for his defense whose fees will be set and paid by the court and funded by taxpayers.

I don't get why he doesn't get a salaried public defender, but them's the rules in Collin County.

I'm down with coffee complaints, though! I have a stovetop espresso maker that vomits all over the burner all the time.

In the unlikely event I get the last motel without a microwave, there's a stinger for boiling water. 50 Tolerance stacking is like aerospace freeplay analysis. In a mechanical system with lots of linkages things that are loosey goosey add up along the control path. And as bad as that is statically, causing jams and stuff, it can be worse dynamically where you get to limit cycle oscillations of control surfaces leading to fatigue and divergent structural failure.

I had been going in the kettle and french press route for over a decade but I decided I'm too lazy and got a auto drip machine that grinds and everything. Cheap chinese crap though, so the brew button broke a month in. However I can pry it out with a steak knife and it works again.

I can't help you with your FWP because I'm a rustic who still finds cowboy coffee from a percolator and an open flame to be sufficient for my needs.

On a related note, I worked with this super-genius engineer with a PhD who designed a generator with a tolerance stack that placed his assembled design at plus or minus 1". I had to go back and redesign his knuckle-buster shit so it would fit within the confines of the available envelope inside the vehicle.

75 If that's a Nespresso machine, in my opinion it can create the most amazing cross-blended imitation of low-price instant coffee with overtones of the the coffee machine in the base exchange of the 1960's but at much greater effort and time. A hotel I stayed in had one instead of any of the alternatives that actually make coffee.

I grew up with Scottish influence ( my mother's father was from Scotland) so I used to have hot tea with milk and sugar as an evening ritual on the weekends when I was a kid.

91 For as long as I can remember, I did the whole bean/burr grinder/french press schtick, and the 4 minute steep. Someone sent me some custom fine grind coffee, and that don't work so well in the press. I got out Mom's beloved percolator from 1970-ish, and thought, hmmmmm. When the second burr grinder shit the bed, I tossed the whole lot in the trash, bought ground coffee to begin with (Black Rifle Blackbeard's Delight. Yum!!) started using the percolator every day and never looked back. Thanks Mom!!!

93 Plot twist: the patent for Nespresso original line (what's pictured) has expired. Those Lor capsules may or may not be made on Nespresso factory lines. Same with all the other new players in the original line market.

I use the Lavazza pod system because they use more coffee per pod and I feel it tastes closer to real espresso. And they stand up better in milk drinks. But they can be harder to find.

186 Yeah, I use a cheapie Kureig (SP?) and refillable 'cups'. Had it for years and it's satisfactory. Every evening I brew a couple of cups into a insulated, sealed carafe. That way, in the a.m. I only have to decant a cup and nuke it. The coffee might not meet coffee snob standards, but I can't do a damn thing until I've had a cup in the morning, and this the easiest/fastest route. If I can stagger to the kitchen and pour off a cup, then in 30 sec. or so the will to live will return.

I've noticed a dramatic quality collapse in such things.

The designs are often excellent. I've enjoyed their convenience for years and years. Last few years, depending on brand and other things, suddenly, what?

As noted by others - tear strips don't tear, or tear wrongly/ruining the whole set-up, or resealing lines don't reseal unless you take them to work bench and put on your magnifying headset and use tools to reseal them. Weird. I mention this and get the usual "what's wrong with you?" looks from some. But it's real, and it's spectacular. I don't even bother trying many times now, just cut open with scissors, move to a plastic container.

At places I volunteer the Keurig thing is great, works for the setting and patterns of use.

At home next possible coffee move is to get a good Italian espresso machine. Price, footprint, reliability. Have come close but not pulled the trigger. Wholelottelove.com a great resource. Some day, hopefully soon.

Had a very good Starbucks branded machine back in DC, gift from then gf (she crazy, but I bet she's loaded now, likely became the US tax lawyer for one of the wealthiest people on the planet). Lost in my big move, along with tons of other things.

As I understand it, freeze-dried coffee has already been “burned”, so it is fragile. Don’t use boiling water to reconstitute and it will taste better. Use a small amount of room temperature water, creamer, or even hooch to make a syrup first. Then add sweetener before the hot water.

In the US, Hampton Inn always has free coffee in the lobby.

Depends on where you live. Here in Orange County gas is as cheap as 3.93 for off-brand up to 4.70 for the likes of Chevron or Mobil.

And..yes it is frustrating to think we're gonna be paying close to double what the rest of the country (except the west coast) pays for gas.

When they say the 'average price' in the US is in the low 3's, I wonder what the average would be with Ca, Or, and Wa excludeded.

It's already absurdly high - over $500/year for a newish vehicle....

I was in Arizona on bizness two years ago, one of the guys told me if you're over 65 it only costs $5/year for car registration.

So, they raise the taxes significantly on gasoline....THEN start charging EV drivers by the mile to make up those taxes they are already slamming on ICE drivers.

Same thing with farm gasoline, at least in some states. As I recall they put different color dye in the farm gas than in the road gas, so they can (in theory) catch you.

I'm sure that there's an awful lot of farm gas that's been burned on the highway, though.

We have to report odometer reading when we renew the insurance or else we pay more.

I just don't think raising gas taxes is effective - people will just find ways to use less - just like back in the 70's when it went from 35 cents to over a dollar a gallon.

I can actually understand charging the EV drivers for the lost gas tax revenue - they are heavier.

346 My current FWP is mole eradication. We have one mole that is residing somewhere just outside of the my AO. I've set a good metal dart trap and it has sprung twice but, the dirty little vermin still lives. I've reconn'd the battle field and I now think I have the enemy on the run. The new trap placement should do the trick on an active main tunnel. This is all out war at this point.

Don't try. Take a cup cone, fold it in half. (now you have a flat line and a semi circle) Grab the middle of one half at the top of the semi-circle and fold it to the edge. Press the crease/fold and open the filter. You now have a cone filter.

Of the various models, what worked best for us were BARLAS tunneled traps ... The critters usually journeyed the same path, and having two tunnels got them either coming or going ... Peppermint oil drizzled on woolen dryer balls (set inside small ceramic dishes) also works as a good repellant.

361 The pub I've been frequenting of late has smoked meats on the menu. I've been resisting because of cost but today I broke down and had a sausage and smoked potato salad--all delicious.
The sausage was cheese and jalapeno--nice and spicy.
