Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - June 25, 2025 [TRex]

20250625-20241226-IMG_20241226_160759408.jpg

Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety.

This is the Wednesday night ONT. Pull up a chair and sit a spell. Be nice to your fellow commenters.

The passing of Fred Smith, founder of FedEx, seems like it got lost amid all the news of the weekend. The Wednesday night ONT will pause for a moment in honor or Mr. Smith.

20250624-NASM-SI-2004-18883-000002.jpg

The Dassault Cargo Falcon 20 is a French jet aircraft that, on April 17, 1973, became the first to carry a Federal Express air package. This was a new milestone in the history of air transport in the United States and created a new category of airline, the exclusive air express carrier. Within a decade, no less than thirty-three were flying on the spokes of the Federal Express network. The service was so successful that, by the early 1980s, its front-line aircraft were expanded to the McDonnell Douglas DC-10Cs, whose cargo holds were big enough to carry several Falcons each. NASM site

Did the FedEx concept come from a college paper that earned a "C" grade? Not really.

In 1965, while he was earning a Bachelor's degree in economics at Yale University, Frederick Smith penned a term paper for Professor Challis A. Hall's Economics 43A class which contained an outline for a delivery service that would use a "hub and spokes" concept to handle the routing of parcels. (This plan entails first directing packages through a central sorting facility before dispatching them onwards to their intended destinations.)

A number of sources assert the term paper earned a C from the instructor who marked it. However, while that aspect of the tale has been widely touted as fact, it does not appear to be verifiable. Smith himself fed the acceptance of this element of the story by once stating in an offhand comment about the term paper "I guess I got my usual gentlemanly C," but in a 2002 interview Smith acknowledged "I don't really remember what grade I got. I probably didn't get a very good one, though, because it wasn't a well-thought-out paper." (Questioning Professor Hall, the man who bestowed the grade, is out of the question because he died in 1968.) Snopes

At age 29, Smith launched Federal Express with his own money. He first tested the initial 25-city network, flying empty boxes across the country, and then went live on April 17, 1973. To keep the network of cities growing, he raised $90 million in venture capital from investors like Allstate and Newport Securities. The company endured twenty-six months running at a loss before it broke even. Over the next couple of decades, Smith committed to ensuring detailed transport information such as estimated arrival times and prompt deliveries. PBS website

Random TV Trivia: in its original run, The Jetsons only aired 24 episodes across a span of six months from 1962-1963. It was cancelled due to low ratings. Reruns got such high viewership over the years that in 1985, 51 more episodes were produced.

Best wishes to anyone in Los Angeles driving on the 405. Lane closures started last night for a road refresh.

The project will overhaul the Sepulveda Pass. It will cover a 10 mile stretch between the 101 Freeway and Sunset Blvd.

It is being led by Caltrans, and includes ramp expansions, bridge retrofitting, drainage and safety upgrades. It is projected to cost $144 million and last 4 years. In California terms, double both and you're probably closer to how it will play out.

There will be overnight lane closures from about 9am to 6am. Some weekends will see full closures. All construction activities will be suspended for 3 months in summer 2028 for the Olympics.

Good luck!

If the words "construction on the 405" do not mean anything to you, count your blessings.

PS. With $6 gas, maybe nobody can afford to drive anyway.

Today I learned that Boeing once converted a B-17 for TWA. TWA then sold it to the Shah of Iran.

20250624-B17TWA.jpg

TWA's B-17G was delivered too late to see combat. In 1946 and 1947, Boeing converted the military model B-17G to become the civilian Model 299AB. With basic TWA markings and the tail number NL1B, the airline's B-17 was used to scout prospective routes.

It was later sold to the Shah of Iran. The Shah used it a personal plane to make frequent airborne inspection surveys of his country. It was fitted with ten seats, a three-quarter bed and a galley complete with stove. The Shah was checked out as pilot of the B-17 after 14 hours flying at the controls.

Serial number 44-85728 was scrapped in 1970.

World's largest cheese tasting held in Colombia

Guinness World Records confirmed Alpina Productos Alimenticios S.A.S BIC earned the record for the world's largest cheese tasting event when 1,185 people sampled dairy delicacies in Sopo, Cundinamarca, Colombia.

The company took the record from Australia's Kangaroo Valley Agricultural and Horticultural Association, which gathered 1,000 people for a cheese tasting in 2019.

Guinness World Records rules required all participants to sample three varieties of cheese. The cheeses chosen for the event were Gruyere, Sopo and Argovia.

I got interested in the history of Iran and the Shah and all that. Sordid business of CIA and MI6 meddling after WWII.

Reza Shah, the last Shah's father took over after the coup of 1921. Before that, a lot of British and Soviet wrangling over Iranian territory after the Communists took over Russia.

He was made Shah and it was a kinda sort of constitutional monarchy. Then came WWII, and Reza got sort of friendly with the Germans, hoping to play them against Brits and Russians to his benefit. Result was an invasion of Iran by Britain and Soviets in 1941, and he was taken out of power.

After WWII, his son, the "Shah of Iran" we're familiar with, was made Shah. But he had limited power. They elected a prime minister who got all sort of uppity and nationalized the oil industry and got sort of communisty.

CIA and MI6 engineered a coup against him, and put the Shah in absolute monarchy control. And thus it was until '79. The Shah got really tyrannical starting in the late '60s to early '70s, with the infamous SAVAK secret police.

His role was to keep the communists at bay and police the Persian Gulf oil control. To do that, we let him be a brutal dictator.

Grandson said "ewww, we don't get food from Pizza Hut, those people are nasty and the food is awful." lmao. Little ears hear lots of things. In 1963, the Shah launched the "White Revolution", which was intended to modernize and industrialize Iran, and take power away from what was essentially feudal landlords in the country. That pissed off the landlords and the Islamic nutjobs. Allowing women to vote and secularizing the local authority really pissed them off.

Khomeini was the most vocal of the nutjobs, and that got him exiled (Shah should've take a more permanent "exile" to him....)

We have watched her blossom into a remarkably mature young lady, and we try to do nice things for her and her mom whenever we can. So to reward her for her art accomplishment, we took her and her mom to the Cheesecake Factory in downtown Fort Worth for lunch today. (Cont)

279 Franpsycho, thanks. Leningrad wasn't quite mobbed up yet in '78, but we had little trouble finding lizards (yashceritzi), black market guys, to do the basics (sell jeans, get the Soviet uniforms or hats we were looking for). What amazed us was how little interest the goons had in us. Program started with detente in '73, and we'd heard stories about the early years (like being at the embassy in Sofia or Baghdad back under the previous managements). But they properly assessed us as useless young idiots, and ignored us.

Some people took it a bit far, traveling internally outside their visa limits. They were scorched by the group leaders and the rest of us for endangering the whole show.

We had a great train trip at the end, what we called the "anti-Soviet tour", since it went through the Baltics, then western Ukraine (Lvov, where the vibe was very distinctly tense).

281 "Best wishes to anyone in Los Angeles driving on the 405. Lane closures started last night for a road refresh."

For 5 years (2015 - 2020) the 405 in Orange County was being reconstructed. They dropped and rebuilt 16 bridges so they could widen the freeway to add two 'Fast Trak' lanes and one regular lane.

The only real problem was the frequent lane re-striping made life a little sporty if you weren't paying attention when traffic was moving......

About 15 years ago they dropped the Mulholland bridge at the top of Sepulveda pass onto the 405 over a weekend.

All the OC bridges were done at night on weekends with some closures during the weekend.

A key incident that led to the '79 Revolution was something called the Cinema Rex fire in August of '78. Some idiots locked the doors to a theater in Abadan, doused with gasoline and lit it off, killing over 400 people.

It was Islamic nutjobs who started it (and they had done similar things before, protesting against Western decadence and women doing things), but the nutjobs claimed it was the Shah's SAVAK doing a false flag to justify a crackdown.

Most of the people believed the false flag claim, and that tipped the balance in favor of the revolutionaries. Stupid, just stupid.

And Jimmuh just fucked everything up.

One guy on the program who probably spoke 30 words of Russian brought almost literally nothing but trade goods - jeans, nylons, cosmetics, Beatles records. He sold it all to the first black market guy he came across (very risky, really), netted a fortune in rubles, and we rarely saw him at the cafeteria again. He always ate in Intourist hotel restaurants.

Funny guy. As we walked from our plane to the terminal at Sheremetyevo on arrival, some young uniformed (ill-fitting) KGB guys lined the painted lane for us to walk in. They didn't look happy. Terminal looked shabby even from the outside.

This guy turns to me and in a classic line I'll never forget, says "we're afraid of THESE guys???".

Plausible. Of course there are things left out, and one hopes even those numbers are "approximate". There had to be search/rescue capability staged somewhere. This I did not know: the Shah himself claimed that JFK wanted him out, at least at first, and that it was JFK's CIA that engineered or encouraged the Khomeini protests in '63.

Khomeini denounced the Shah (and Israel) after the White Revolution reforms were enacted. They arrested him, and that sparked a big protest.

They were leaning toward just executing him (which they should've done), but there were fears that would make him a bigger martyr and do more harm than good. So off to exile.

334 I'm not sure if many young people understand who truly ghastly and evil Lenin was ( probably not, since they have
been indoctrinated by the left wing school system ) but I think that Curtis Sliwa coined one of the most brilliant monikers in political history about Mamdani in calling him Osama Bin Lenin and I congratulate him on coming up with that and I- who have no ability to influence anything in NY politics except for sending in some little money to Sliwa and writing letters to the editor which the NY Post occasionally publishes- will use that moniker regularly.

"According to the assessment of senior Intelligence Directorate officials, the damage to the nuclear program is not surgical but systemic - the cumulative achievement allows us to state that the Iranian nuclear project has suffered severe, wide-ranging, and deep damage, setting it back by years. We will not allow Iran to produce weapons of mass destruction.”

Of course he was referring to the results of Israel's attack on the entire nuclear sector, from personnel to related manufacturing to actual enrichment, design, and weaponization infrastructure. The idiotic kerfuffle over first-glance unfinished intel here in the US concerns one particular strike. And on that, tomorrow at 8AM EDT Hegseth will have a briefing at the Pentagon.

Hangin' in there! Chemo drugs are working so far, but I am losing my hair one strand at a time, and my nails are starting to lift up/trying to fall off. Haven't been nauseous, though 🎉🎉🎉

Our 45th anniversary party is less than 2 months away. Sending out most of the invitations tomorrow (I had to order more, so some won't go out until next week). I just booked a DJ and finalized floral arrangements; the venue and catering were already taken care of, although I do have to finalize the menu; the "bride" and "groom" cakes have been decided on; and now I am working on the table settings/"stationery" and guest favors.

Things are starting to get hectic, but it's been fun planning everything! We didn't get to have a big wedding when we got married, but now we have more money than we did back then, so I am getting the reception of my girlhood dreams - no mints, nuts, and ice cream punch in the fellowship hall for this gal! 😂😂😂

One thing I would really like to know the truth of, is how much footsie Jimmuh played with Khomeini. You know how much Jimmuh loved anti-American dictators and hated Israel and pro-American dictators.

It is alleged the military was going to stage a coup there at the last to keep the "civilian reform" govt from taking over. Whether that would've kept the Shah in power, or something else, don't know. But Jimmuh stopped that.

Supposedly Khomeini assured Jimmuh that American interests would be fine in Iran, don't you worry, I'm your friend. And Jimmuh believe him.

I can believe that.

it is not so much the residents it is the fact that it is supposed to be a suburb but it is not a suburb in the sense of those everywhere else, Westchester is a suburb crammed into a bunch of tiny towns. Theres no decent road transit, you cannot get anywhere easily, it is hyper inefficient.

It is there mostly because residents from the city wanted suburbs for raiding children that were near enough to commute to the city daily.

Now, for a prototypical example of the moderate, middle of the road squish type: Shapour Baktiar, who was the last prime minister of Iran before Khomeini took over.

He was against the Shah, and very pro-human rights and democracy and all that good stuff. He was agin' communists and Islamists, but they needed their rights and all that.

There at the last, the Shah appointed him Prime Minister. He was gonna set up a nice, democractic human rights government. He released all the political prisoners, abolished the SAVAK, brought Khomeini back to be nice and all that.

He was then going to hold elections for an assembly to decide the govt of the Iran, new constitution and all that good stuff...

Now, Khomeini then denounced Bakhtiar as a traitor and loyalist to the Shah (no mind the Shah had arrested him many times before). Bakhtiar then had to flee to Paris. That's what being a middle of the road squish gets you. In the end, he pissed off everybody, including his most loyal Nationalist Front supporters, his friend in the anti-Shah opposition for all the years before.

From Paris, he did try to lead some anti-Islamic opposition. For that, Khomeini ordered him killed. They succeeded, killing him in 1991 in Paris. With kitchen knives.

That's the fate of a squish like Bakhtiar indeed.

And where are they supposed to get the floor space for these stores? You can't just declare any old space a grocery store, especially if you're selling produce and meat and perishables. So they have to ID all the sites assuming they're available, do all the plumbing and pest control, install flooring that cleans up easily, and secure the places somehow. How long will it take in New York to even prep a space?

Just saw a segment on the Hannity rerun about Autopen-gate. Some official named Neera Tanden, whose title was Director of the president's Domestic Policy Council, was the one who actually "ran" the autopen.

She would get orders to sign stuff, but had no real idea who actually authorized it. Based on the (tenuous) theory of autopen signatures for official POTUS acts, it should have been Biden himself, who ordered her to do it.
