In recent times, however, the version replacing beer with an energy drink has far surpassed its progenitor in popularity. Either way, this easy-to-prepare-and infamous-combination has managed to maintain its reputation for getting the party started.- Pour one can of Red Bull into a pint glass - Fill a shot glass with Jägermeister - Drop shot glass into pint glass - Consume immediately [Doggo says: Please, no dancing on the bar with your pants off. Bar dancing with pants on may be acceptable. No, you cannot keep the shot glass.] ![]() After 40 years of delivering the tragic news of a PC crash to Windows users, Microsoft's infamous "blue screen of death" will be going away. But not to worry - a black screen of death will be replacing it, albeit without the sad emoticon face. The infamous "blue screen of death" has been around since the very first version of Windows in 1985.1985 - smack dab in the middle of the 80s. What an awesome time! Two insects - a fly and a juvenile ant - preserved in 99-million-year-old amber from Myanmar have revealed what scientists are calling some of the oldest examples of parasitic "zombie" fungi ever discovered. The fossils, found in Myanmar's amber markets, are a rare opportunity for scientists "to visualise the ancient ecological relationships preserved in fossils," said Yuhui Zhuang, lead author and doctoral researcher at Yunnan University. One of the fossils, a grotesquely well-preserved one, shows the fruiting bodies of the ancient fungi bursting through the hosts' heads, frozen mid-invasion. Looking less like a vase and more like a complicated relationship with the wheel and clay. Club ONT Music The request line was open. It then failed to boot a second time (I mailed it back for repairs again and it came back with a new motherboard). And finally, the 2nd repaired box crashed after I got it set up and then refused to boot (at this point I made it clear I wanted a new box). This only took 2 months to resolve. What a headache. On the other hand Dell never wavered in trying to resolve all this. Other than time involved and the failed repairs their warranty support is still the best have ever used. This is true provided you accept that things need bake a bit on occasion before they are done.

Probably the riskiest thing I did (although really not that risk) was one day on an extended visit to Guadalajara, I spent the entire day walking around the city by myself, with no lifeline, nobody knowing where I was. Incredible city, walked all through the magnifent cathedral built in 1525 (take that Plymouth, founded 100 years later).
The reason it actually wasn’t risky is that people there are out a whole lot more than we are, and whenever I was out walking on a sidewalk, there was never a time when there weren’t at least 500 people out on that road or sidewalk with me. And of course you’ve got to take precautions against pick pockets, but nobody’s going to do some great crime in the middle of some throbbing crowd. Mexico - at least before the cartels - could be scary and comfortable at the same time. Posted by: Tom Servo at June 28, 2025 11:47 PM (HEGiN) 260

You guys were talking about parallel parking the other day - mentioning something something about manual transmission, and how tough that would be.
I’m here to tell you, that isn’t the half of it. Until power steering came along, forget it. Manual steering aka “armstrong steering” is actually kind of nice in some ways. One, it’s a lot less noisy. No parts to break. It steers OK mostly, very easy - as long as you’re moving. Turning the wheels at a dead stop would be impossible for many, especially girls. One other nasty feature of manual steering. When 4 wheeling on rough trails, it is possible to hit a boulder or whatever “just so” and the direct steering column linkup will send the steering wheel spinning so fast it will hum. Popular way to break a wrist or thumb back in the day if they are in the spokes. Posted by: Common Tater at June 29, 2025 12:11 AM (wNEJY) 305

Which rights were the southern states fighting for?
Posted by: JackStraw at June 28, 2025 11:56 PM (viF8m) They were fighting for the right to tell the government to fuck off. The Southern states were doing their own 'experiment in democracy', as all states then were considered. Also, today most cannot understand the love and affection people felt for their home states, a truly alien concept today. Most then never travelled beyond 20 miles from home. It's why Bobby Lee went with Virginia and not the U.S. Army. Also, only about 1.6% of the Southern population owned slaves. So not everybody was fighting for slavery but, as I said, the right to tell the government to fuck off. Not saying it's right. But there were a lot of slaves in the North, too, and not just those passing through on the Underground Railroad. The Emancipation Proclamation only freed the slaves in territory still held by The Rebellion. Only after Lincoln's death were the 14th, 15th and 16th Amendments passed clearing that up. Well, I drove a ‘64 Ford for quite a while. And you’re right, it does have a better feedback if you want to look at it that way. Modern cars are quiet and people are insulated from what’s going on around them. Airbags, power brakes, seatbelts, power steering and smooth suspension make people less attentive. They are far safer to be sure, but they drive that much faster, so a lot of it is cancelled out.
My Ford did not have seat belts. They were an extra cost option at the time, and were not required until 1966 at the federal level iirc. I can assure you one will naturally drive safely when no seatbelts are present and a nice solid vanadium steel straight steering column shaft is pointing at your chest. Sort of related to one theme tonight. There's an audio interview of Mel Brooks (99 today) which - of course - is very funny.
He's describing not his war experiences, but his pre-war experiences. There was a program sponsored by the military to educate lots of engineers for the war - ASTP. Basically paid for college. Forget the actual expansion of that acronym, but Brooks says at the time many called it "All Safe Til Peace" - people figured they could hide out in college and not be sent overseas. Didn't work out that way for many, of course, including him. But the funny part is him describing what it was like for a Jewish kid from Brooklyn to be marching in formation, in uniform, at dawn, around statues of Lee and Stonewall Jackson. He went to the Citadel. It's sort of like a Mel Brooks comedy set up, but it was real life. Posted by: rhomboid at June 29, 2025 12:23 AM (1m82a) 328

The Las Cruces Sam's Club's main entrance runs right past the store entrance which means the people coming and going bring incoming traffic to a dead stop a lot. Yeah it is a mess. Over what issue? Sorry, this dodge doesn't work. Southerners don't get to constantly blame all of their problems on yankee cockroaches and then pretend the Civil War started because of, as KJB would say, legaleese. Southerners have an assload of problems caused by Southerners and it has nothing to do with yankees. It started because the south wanted to preserve slavery which was key to the southern economy. Yes, the north also had a bad history with slavery and was reforming. The south did not want to. Sure, states rights was used as the justification but the reality is the south wanted to keep slavery.
Posted by: JackStraw at June 29, 2025 12:35 AM (viF8m) Government overreach. Again, each state was their own experiment in democracy. In The Federalist Papers, it was made plain that if people did not like what their state was doing, move to another one. Seriously. Back then, it was the United States, not the United States. The accent stress makes a big difference in meaning and the reason why the Civil War was so important. Posted by: RickZ at June 29, 2025 12:48 AM (gKDq2) 356

We, are the yankee cockroaches we get called here every single day. You, are the people who call us yankee cockroaches. You'd be surprised how tiresome that gets. Popular election of the Senate was indeed the biggest fuckup to the original federal architecture of all of them, and just ruined everything. The Senate was to represent the states, as states, state governments. The House represented the population directly. To get anything passed, those two very different groups had to agree. The 17th Amendment took the state governments out of the control loop completely, which was the main obstacle to the expansion of federal power against the state powers. I got caught in a South Dakota speed trap on leave one time,
Posted by: Common Tater at June 29, 2025 12:38 AM (J+7DF) My Mom was with him so this was not a 'My Dad exaggerates a bit in his stories' tale. This was back in the late '40s (way before my time!), Dad on leave with Mom in the car driving through podunk GA on those two-lane roads. Dad was stationed at the time in Colo Colo, Canal Zone, Panama. Mom was driving and went through a speed trap. My Mom didn't have a license but my Dad pulled out his Spanish license from Panama and said, 'See, right here, it says in Spanish if the husband is in the car, the wife can drive.' The cop had no idea so off to the local magistrate they went. Dad explained the same thing to the judge about the license, in Spanish, allowing the wife to drive if the husband was with her. Judge asked if anybody in Court read Spanish. No one did. Case dismissed. I honestly thought he was bullshitting me with that story but my Mom backed him up. And she did not do that too often so I know it's true. Couldn't happen today, obviously. Posted by: RickZ at June 29, 2025 01:00 AM (gKDq2) 368

Debby Doberman Schultz,
When I first heard that Georgia story, I really thought it was complete bullshit. Happened early in the morning, typical speed trap time. It was a corrupt little podunk town making their revenue off of out-of-state speeders. My Dad was a real bullshit artist, about as bad a Obama, always telling tales and making himself the hero. But he sold that bluff. My Mom probably looked real innocent, too, helping the case, what with little kids (siblings) in the car. But some of those little towns in the South back then were nightmares. Hollywood made hay out of it. Posted by: RickZ at June 29, 2025 02:15 AM (gKDq2) 460

Wishbone Ash still tours. They came through Las Cruces a couple years ago. IIRC the only original member was the lead guitarist. It was a fun show. I saw them at a rock festival in WA St., as they say, back in the day. The highlight of the rock festival for me was when some hippie's monkey got loose and took a dump on the seat of a patched biker's Harley. Hilarity ensued. It is a miracle nobody got shot. Posted by: Alteria Pilgram - My President has convicitions at June 29, 2025 02:27 AM (NXz8h) Back when I entered college in the fall of '74, the guys from NoVa were all into Wishbone Ash. They weren't very big down in Norfolk as I never heard of them until college. Maybe I heard some songs on the progressive rock station but if I did, the song wasn't memorable. Unlike one song I taped from the radio onto a little cassette tape machine. I had no idea who did the song as I didn't catch the DJ say that. But I loved the song. A couple of years later, I was getting high in a dorm room that same fall and that song came on the turntable. I jumped, practically knocking the bong over, and excitedly asked, 'Who is this?' The guy handed me the album cover. Blodwyn Pig, 'Ahead Rings Out'. The song was 'See My Way'. Bought the album and eventually the cd. Just for that song. We had a good week with the Supremes this week with the added bonus of Ketanji's 'Martian from another planet' idiocy. Perhaps she doesn't know Mars IS a planet. Wasn't she the most reversed district court judge ? Perhaps Biden's keeper misread 'most reversed' as 'most revered' - just one letter off...? And...didn't she also have the added distinction of being reversed 9-0 by the Supremes? Or am I misremembering that one? Here's hoping for another good week with Trump's BBB getting final passage.
