Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Tuesday Overnight Open Thread - June 17, 2025 [scampydog]Good evening and thank you for checking in on the Tuesday, ONT. Some random, a few parts science, and 100% why not. Comment section won't bite - probably.
I know you will assure me that I am foolish and that you want me to have full happiness and don't want to be in my way. I'll bet you are surprised that I don't even have a girlfriend (except you, sweetheart) after two years. But you can't help it, darling, nor can I - I don't understand it, for I have met many girls and very nice ones and I don't want to remain alone - but in two or three meetings they all seem ashes. You only are left to me. You are real. From publius: "Feynman did remarry, twice. Second ended in divorce, and the third lasted until his death. Here's a picture of him dancing with his third wife at the Nobel Ceremony in 1965. He was clowning a bit there, of course. There's some other pictures of him at the Nobel Ceremony. She died about a year after he did." Perfect sphere found by astronomers. Riddle was bugging me, so I did what any self respecting Moron would do. I emailed publius. In data collected by a powerful radio telescope, astronomers have found what appears to be a perfectly spherical bubble. We know more or less what it is - it's the ball of expanding material ejected by an exploding star, a supernova remnant - but how it came to be is more of a puzzle.Next up we have some (no longer) mystery radio signals. The source of mystery radio signals in space has finally been identified after almost a decade. For the past ten years, astronomers have been detecting strange radio signals emitting from space every two hours. Unfortunately, scientists have already ruled out aliens in this one.NASA skywatching for the Month of June. All Month - Planet Visibility: Venus: Rises about 2 hours before the Sun in June, and shines very brightly, low in the eastern sky, in the morning all month. Mars: Visible in the west for a couple of hours after sunset all month. Drops lower in the sky as June continues, and passes very close to Regulus in the constellation Leo on June 16 and 17. (They will be about half a degree apart, or the width of the full moon.) Jupiter: Visible quite low in the west after sunset for the first week of June, then lost in the Sun's glare after. Will re-appear in July in the morning sky. Mercury: Becomes visible low in the west about 30 to 45 minutes after sunset in the last week and a half of June. Saturn: Rises around 3 a.m. in early June, and around 1 a.m. by the end of the month. Begins the month near Venus in the dawn sky, but rapidly pulls away, rising higher as June goes on.More from publius "Venus and Earth's orbital periods have a ratio that is very close to 13:8, meaning Venus completes 13 orbits per 8 earth orbits almost exactly. Venus thus has 5 inferior conjunctions occurring very close to the same point in the sky every 8 years. That works out to a cycle of about 9 months between conjunctions. Since Venus is an inferior planet, we can never see it overhead during the middle of the night, only on the eastern morning or western evening side of the sky close before sunrise or close after sunset. The window around these inferior conjunctions are when Venus gets close and bright. During a window of several months around the inferior conjunction, Venus first appears bright in the western sky right after sunset when it's on the eastern side of the sun, then disappears into the sun at inferior conjunction. It then quickly whips to the western side of the sun to appear in the early morning, still close and bright. It then continues in its orbit, getting dimmer and father away and closer to the sun in the sky, until it repeats the cycle 9 months later. So Venus flips between "Evening Star" and "Morning Star" modes. Believe it or not, when Venus is near maximum brightness during the Evening and Morning Star modes, they get a lot of UFO reports from those not familiar with what's in the sky above them. You can plot this from a geocentric reference plane, and see the relative position of Venus and the Sun over this 8 year cycle. Venus' path makes a nice 5-sided pattern centered around the earth, sometimes poetically dubbed the Five-petal Rose of Venus, seen here on this Earthsky page." Big AoS thank to you publius! *** That's one way to learn.
Oh yes! Spaceballs! Mel Brooks with the teaser.
First day of summer is June 20th. Unless you live in Phoenix, where it's know as "just another day of 110+ heat." Let's roll through some decades of summer songs. Which songs left a dent in your summer brain? Make your case in the comments. (and if linking in comments, please use tinyurl or another link shortening tool). 1950's: Thought about Lollipop, but we are going with Eddie Cochran. Summertime Blues, 1958. 1960's: Tommy James and the Shondells. Mony Mony, 1968. Billy Idol version was pretty good too. 1970's: It is Pride Month. The Kinks. Lola, 1970. 1980's: Damn, this decade is tough as a Gen X'er. The Clash. Should I Stay or Should I Go, 1981. 1990's: All the 'cool kids' spent a summer mocking the video. Yet they danced and sang along. Rob Van Winkle. Vanilla Ice. Ice, Ice, Baby, 1990. 2000's: Flame away in the comments. This came down to: Nelly/Country Grammar, Ride Wit Me or.... Buckcherry. Crazy B*tch, 2006. NSFW. 2010's: Lost musical decade. Kids won a lot of the radio car battles. Meghan Trainor. All About that Bass, 2014. Will close the summer song - musical section with this all-timer. This ONT brought to you by: Seen around town. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

So, I was thinking about the Iran tweet (two threads back), and it occurs to me that the Manhattan project delivered two (or three if you count the test) devices that could be dropped by a bomber, because we had lots of bombers and that's how we planned to deploy them.
Iran does not have many bombers, so they probably did not assemble devices appropriate to that method, they would presumably beeline a design that was suitable to delivery systems they're familiar with. And I don't mean vests. Posted by: Methos at June 17, 2025 10:09 PM (Dnobf) 36

I recall that the Iranians had close ties with the Norks; they might have a design from their buddies. The fly in the ointment is that the North Koreans use plutonium while the Iranians are apparently planning on enriched uranium. Different materials, different solutions... but then again, a lot of the fusing and other crap that goes into it could be borrowed?
And supposedly there were implosion tests detected (non-nuclear, obviously). So it's not entirely implausible that some desperate flop-sweat machining of whatever they have on hand has been going on, or something. I dunno. If they're planning on throwing it, though, I think they'd need to use one of their older, bigger rockets to do it - Shahab or Shelob or whatever the fuck it's called. Those are conspicuous and, as a bonus, liquid fueled - probably not a great combo when there's a bunch of Israeli planes flying around your airspace with impunity. Ironically, one of our nuclear bunker busters (10 kt, tactical level range) would be the ideal thing to take out Fordow. It would do it nice and slick. Clever little device that burrows underground a bit, and is designed for maximum coupling of the shockwave to rock. It would produce a 10 - 30 atm overpressure shock wave in undergrounds up to 200 m deep that would just, first kill everybody inside, and be like smashing a hammer into all the equipment. It wouldn't "blow it up", but it would kill everybody and destroy the equipment. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at June 17, 2025 11:31 PM (w6EFb) 284

1. Kiev got hit hard with drones and missiles last night. They may have lost another Patriot air defense battery, which probably won't be replaced. 2. North Korea will be sending 5000 engineering troops to the Kursk region, supposedly to clear landmines and repair infrastructure. Speculation is they will actually be kept busy getting up anti-drone netting over a supply roads. 3. It really pisses me off when "celebrities" voice their opinions about how our country is run.
------- I recently heard Adam Carolla interview some Asian karate man who was promoting the movie he was in. This guy was the diametric opposite of that ugly Snow White girl who ruined her company's take by running her mouth during PR hits. Carolla does long form interviews, and the usual project plugs can't carry a conversation for too long, so he always gets in the plugs, asks about the project, and then tries to steer the interview into more interesting territory for the audience. This guy wasn't having it. No matter what Carolla asked him, he just went back to the project. If Carolla had asked "what's your favorite fruit," he'd have answered "I can't really say, Adam. Craft Services on Mission: Impossible 5 provided the best of every fruit, and they were all equally delicious. That was the level of professionalism everywhere on this set." A screwball comedy that I found out about, and watched, last week is Under the Rainbow with Carrie Fischer and Chevy Chase. What I admired about everyone's performances was that every single named character was played absolutely straight. I didn't find it uproarious, but that was mostly because I have a bad habit of meta-watching (wondering if Chase was a jerk on set and thinking how sad it was that Fischer's life went so badly).

From this nuclear bunker buster shock wave, we get a 10-30 atm overpressure shock wave, and that is even with very piss poor coupling between surrounding rock and the cavity of an underground room filled with air. So, standing in there when such a shock hit, the thing would come off the walls, traveling at Mach 3 through the air. Wavelength would be around a couple inches. That thing would rip through you, hitting you like a plane hammer that travelled through your body, smashing your innards as it passed through you in microseconds. Your innards would be mush, and your body would just collapse on the floor like a sack of mush. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at June 17, 2025 11:50 PM (w6EFb) 334

304 A screwball comedy that I found out about, and watched, last week is Under the Rainbow with Carrie Fischer and Chevy Chase. What I admired about everyone's performances was that every single named character was played absolutely straight. I didn't find it uproarious, but that was mostly because I have a bad habit of meta-watching (wondering if Chase was a jerk on set and thinking how sad it was that Fischer's life went so badly).
Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at June 17, 2025 11:36 PM (lFFaq) Carrie Fischer was a genuinely funny lady. Postcards from the Edge and Wishful Drinking were brutally honest assessments of her life but her wry sense of humor throughout makes it clear that she never saw herself as a victim. A story in the "nobody can do anything right any more" category:
Broke down and bought a new 6' rotary cutter for my little tractor. Old one, dating to the mid-70s had given up the ghost. Gearbox was worn out and noisy. Maybe repairable, but finding parts.... So, new one it was. I get it. As Daddy used to say, PTO driveline had the "Ralph Nadar" safety shit all over it. They just cheaped out, putting some plastic cover on that would meet the requirements, but there was absolutely no way to get to the zerk on the U-joint at the gearbox. No way. So, well, I'm going to have to take that off. But first, I'm going to give it a little test run. Greased everything else, and the front U-joint seemed to be full, so I figure I can run it a little to see how it does before taking the plastic crap off. It was going to be a bitch to do that. And then, problem solved itself, turned out..... but, in a non-optimum fashion.... Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at June 18, 2025 12:03 AM (w6EFb) 372

For explosions above ground, if you were close enough for the shock wave to be that strong, you'd been in the total incineration zone anyway, with the heat pulse. Many different ways you'd be dead. Here, it's a small nuke optimized to generate a shock wave in rock, which transmits to undeground bunker type facilities. So, I get the new bush hog out, and engage the PTO. Luckily, I start it slow at idle, to make sure everything is turning properly, and nothing is out of whack. And then "pow", and the PTO drive line just comes loose, bounces a bit in the plastic shield, and flops down. Plastic shield is damaged. Drive line is not. What the actual fuck? Well, some idiot, some blithering idiot, putting that thing together, overtightened that bolt to the point of the nearly wringing it off, but backed off just at the point of complete wringing off. So, that solved me the trouble of taking that shaft loose to take the stupid plastic shield off so I could regularly get to the grease fitting. These PTO shield are ridiculous. There's a way to do it right, where you can still get to it to grease it. It's possible, but a bitch. Everyone generally ends up taking them off because of it. But in this case, no attempt was made to make it possible. Oh, there was a "grease hole" in that plastic shield, but no way in hell to get a grease gun nozzle into. Some specialized nozzle might could be made just for that, but it would've been some odd shaped thing designed just to fit that particular shield and shaft geometry. We came closer to nuclear war in 1983, in all likelihood. The Politburo of the time was crazy, senile, and basically living in a hallucinatory hall of mirrors regarding foreign policy. They were sending the KGB out to find evidence of the impending US first strike and were, ahh, not happy with anyone who came back with "they aren't planning one".

But the Rooskies might Posted by: Tales of Miklosian youth at June 18, 2025 12:43 AM (K6h4I) I remember maybe fifteen or twenty years back, the Poles and Russians got into one of their periodic squabbles. I forget about what, exactly. But the Poles released a bunch of Soviet/Warsaw Pact strategic plans, to embarrass the Russians. They said that the Soviets ruled out invasion of the US and nuclear first strikes, because they knew neither could work... Instead they planned to break through the Fulda Gap, trigger REFORGER, then feign defeat/retreat, draw the American forces to a pursuit into their own burdensome Warsaw Pact territories, tactically nuke them all, and pick up the pieces. I have to admire the cynicism. It may even have worked. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at June 18, 2025 12:53 AM (BI5O2) 475

Duck and cover is not completely useless. Close enough to the center, of course, you're dead anyway, but there's a distance range far enough away, where it would increase immediate survivability. There are stories from Hiroshima that confirm this. One was girl with some of her friends. She saw the flash, and immediately hit the ground, face down and prone. She survived (to a living hell). All her friends who remained standing were killed. You've got a blast wave and thermal pulse, the latter of which just ignites everything. Some survivors had their clothes incinerated around them where they stood. Anything that can provide shadow can protect against that thermal pulse. Going flat on the ground minimizes your surface area to the oncoming wave front. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at June 18, 2025 12:55 AM (w6EFb) 477

I doubt Israel or the US would use any sort of nuke in Iran. There's going to be a giant stigma on whoever uses the first one since 1945 for whatever purpose or however carefully. Maybe the mullahs would have used one on Israel, depending on whether or not whoever calls the shots actually believes in the destruction-leads-to-hidden-Imam bit. Maybe they just really really wanted one as insurance that Israel wouldn't do what it just did. I am sure that's why North Korea wanted one.

A great re-alignment is taking place from the Mediterranean east (even alliances between Italy and eastern states - but later).
@GordonGChang 12h The risk of war—perhaps nuclear war—between India and Pakistan remains high, especially as New Delhi has lost all patience for Pakistani terrorism and is now weaponizing water. See: https://tinyurl.com/yc2xcydw - Maura Moynihan - India, China, and Pakistan: The Big War is Coming. I don't think it's going to be war war because the Israel/Iran thing preceded by Pakistan's whipping will cause them to rethink their bravado. At the same time, just as we are hemispherically doing here, there will be an alignment of the sane; Russia, Israel, India (there is also the Three Seas Group)- all different, all sane, all invested in moving to the first world. Our 30,000 lb big boy busters are indeed conventional. We do have a dial-a-yield specific nuclear bunker buster weapon. These are not as capable. Sealing off using these would be the plan, not trying to take it out directly. The nuke versions would be capable of taking out Fordow via impressive shockwave production. That's its purpose. That shockwave I was talking about comes from the nuclear bunker buster. The details are classified, but the designation is B61-11, EPW (earth penetrating weapon). It's variable yield. For a bunker busting shockwave job, 10 kt would suffice. That will get that lethal shockwave 200m through solid rock. The conventional ones can't do that. Sealing off, by collapsing the entrance tunnels, ventilation, and all that is all you can hope for. How deep Fordow is is not publicly certain, but 100m to 200m is what you see. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon It's definitely cruel. I don't hate predators. They're a necessary part of any ecosystem. The government "management " Fs up the natural balance. They don't seem to understand the concept of carrying capacity. There is plenty of good science out there. Idaho has corrected some of their mismanagement by allowing wolf hunting. They allowed wolfs to decimate the elk population but they're taking steps to correct that. Washington is purely political. Good science is beyond their comprehension. I don't hate predators. Slovak PM Fico Questions NATO Membership, Sparks Backlash Over Call For Neutrality Authored by Thomas Brooke via Remix News, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has sparked a political debate after publicly suggesting that Slovakia might benefit from adopting a neutral stance in foreign policy — an idea that would mean withdrawal from the NATO alliance. Speaking during a visit to the Ministry of Economy, Fico asked, “Wouldn’t Slovakia’s neutrality be good in this crazy period? I put this question very officially, very clearly.” “What are we all dragged into? What kind of war are you talking about? Who on earth wants to fight with whom? I still don’t know.” As reported by Denník Postoj, the Slovak premier also denounced plans by the European Union to increase defense spending, criticizing what he called the “senseless times of armaments” and comparing weapons manufacturers to pharmaceutical firms profiting during the COVID-19 pandemic. “How do you want to spend the €80..... _zerohedge Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at June 18, 2025 02:54 AM (Ffc+8) 594

Posted by: Sock Monkey * sporting my Andrew Breitbart attitude at June 18, 2025 02:44 AM (0EU0W) I'm just as happy the grizzly bears stay in Fish Creek, a good two miles away. I'd rather they not visit my farm or my dogs. Black bears are not so reliable; they have been known to pass by, but the moose keep them at bay, for the most part. Now, the moose. So far, the older lady moose run this place, and they decide which of the "men" can come calling, or be successful. It's kinda fun in the fall watching the parade. But I'd be just as happy they didn't jump the fence. They are hell on dogs, and my dogs... well... not so good at confrontation avoidance. I do have the AR, just in case. I do have the AR, just in case. So far, no problem, but there's a reason we don't put out bird feeders. Posted by: tcn in AK I was hunting on the nearby timber property one morning and had started walking into a stand right before daybreak. I was walking through a clear cut area when I caught some movement so I hunkered down. I started hearing movement behind me. As it got light I realized I had about five moose surrounding me. Three cows and a couple of juvenile bulls. About the time I was deciding which way to make an exit, Bullwinkle came out of a clump of trees about 40 yards in front of me and put his head down and charged. I jumped into a clump of scraggly little trees . They wouldn't have kept him out but for whatever reason he stopped. He didn't leave for about ten minutes. I thought about shooting him but didn't.
